Pemberton Fall Picnic: Another Success! On October 25, neighbors

gathered for the annual Pemberton Heights Neighborhood Association Picnic. The Picnic was set to go on “rain or shine,” and many crossed their fingers and hoped that the rain would let up. Thankfully we had wonderful weather for an outside gathering.

Picnic Committee Chair Amanda Cowan commented on the event: “The picnic was a great way to get out of the house after a soggy weekend. We listened to music from Mr. Will Duprey, grabbed some candy from the MoPac Man, chowed on tacos provided by Cabo Bobs, signed up for carriage rides, and browsed the silent auction, which earned $2,000 to pay for the picnic!”

Thanks go to Amanda Cowan and the PicnicCommittee (KimberlyComstock, Anna Trimble, Heather Nelson, and Betty Trent) for their creativity, resourcefulness, and excellent organizational skills, as well as Jean Mueller for graciously hosting the picnic on her property. Of course, we cannot forget to thank all of the generous sponsors that made the picnic possible:

Platinum: Mopac Improvement Project, AT&T, Cabo Bob’s, Anna Trimble

Gold: Westgate Dermatology, Page Home Design, Betty Trent, ABC Pest & Lawn

Silver: Capra & Cavelli, Tommy Thomas, The Bar Method, Annika Franco Photography

Bronze: Deep Eddy, Capital & Wright Beverage, Lacquer, Olive & June, Blast Blowdry, Reid’s Cleaners, Farmhouse Delivery, Hayden Avery

Please contact Amanda Cowan via Nextdoor if you are interested in helping with the Picnic next year!

THINGS TO DOIN AUSTIN

By Erin ShanleyA survey conducted in June 2011 by Harris Interactive reported

that most Americans are more likely to be able to identify their neighbors’ cars than know their neighbors’ first names. The same survey also showed that more Americans were able to identify their neighbors' pets than their neighbors' kids.

In this day and age of social media it’s harder and harder to develop face-to-face relationships with people outside our inner circle. But if you are inspired to get to know your neighbors better, here are some time-tested methods of getting to know more of your neighbors:

1. Organize a block party or pot luck. What better way to get to know your neighbors? One group of neighbors on Northwood is known to have weekly “soup parties” in the fall, with each family bringing a different type of soup. It’s a fun way to get together and share a casual meal at the end of a work week.

2. Coordinate a running, walking, or cycling group. We often see runners, walkers, and cyclists in the neighborhood. Solo exercise is great, but sometimes it’s fun to mix it up and get your workout in with a group. Gather up some like-minded neighbors and go for a run, walk, or ride!

3. Bring them a gift. Have a surplus of veggies or herbs from your yard? Did you get overzealous with the baking, and now think having two trays of chocolate chip cookies in the house is not a good idea for your waistline? Bring those extra goodies to a neighbor—they are sure to be appreciated.

4. Invite a neighbor for drinks. Have a neighbor or two over for a bottle of wine and some light hors d’ouvres. There’s much less pressure and commitment to this than an actual meal, and you are much less likely to put off inviting them over if you keep it casual.

5. Go for a walk. Walking is a great way to meet your neighbors. Take it to the streets and chat with any neighbors you run into. Walking in the neighborhood and maintaining a visible presence outside the house helps promote neighborhood safety and unity.Tryafew(orall)oftheabovesuggestionsoverthenextfewmonths,

and see how many additional neighbors you can get to know!

Did you know that, each year, 58,000 tons of recyclable materials end up in the landfill? This amount of recyclables could fill the UT Tower 29 times. What’s in your trash? What’s in Your Trash? Make a Difference in Your Family

The holiday season is generally a time of family get-togethers, increased community service and an overall joyful experience as we share this wonderful time with family and friends.

But did you know that you can make the spirit of the holiday season last all year? How you ask? By opening your heart and your home to an International Exchange Student!

Host families reap the benefits of opening their home by sharing their America. When they share with their exchange student, they are also able to see America with fresh eyes through the student. Families often learn new things about the U.S. and have different perspectives after hosting. The experiences and memories that are shared during the program last a lifetime and span international borders.

Make a difference in the life of a student and in your family! If your family enjoys exploring new cultures and nurturing youth, please contact us to request more information about this amazing opportunity to share your life with a special young person and to learn how you can make a difference. The application process for the 2016/2017 school year has begun; it is recommended to start now as available schools spots fill up early.

Ayusa is a non-profit organization founded in 1981 to promote global learning and leadership through foreign exchange, study abroad, and leadership programs for high school students from the U.S. and around the world.

For more information about hosting a high school foreign exchange student, please contact your local representative Vicki Odom at 832.455.7881 or [email protected] or Ayusa at 1.888.552.9872 or by visiting the website at www.ayusa.org.
