From the Chair
The PEN is the newsletter of the Ponders EndCommunity Development Trust (PECDT) and is titled"Ponders End Newsletter" hence PEN. We have recentlyheard people express questions about the content andpurpose of the PEN so I am taking this opportunity torespond to some of them. We hope this helps.
The PEN's primary purpose is to convey news from thePonders End Community Development Trust to peoplewho live, work and/or study in Ponders End, to ourpartners and funders. We also strive to provideinformation on plans from the local statutory sector (localcouncil, health, police, etc.).
With the previously mentioned primary purpose the firstpoint of information relayed in the PEN is the PECDTitself, hence the coverage of the two PECDT Workersand their projects - this is work we are funded to do andas an accountable body we feel it is important to sharethis information with our audience. People in PondersEnd. This piece from me as chair also comes within thatcategory. We hope too, to be able to include a youthpiece and were pleased to present a piece from Jordan inthe last issue. It would be good to see this aspect grow.
We also take seriously the need to provide informationfrom local community groups - these can be voluntarysector (charity/not for profit) groups who serve a range ofcommunities, ages, faiths, etc., which is why there arepieces about various projects, training, fun, fitness andother activities available to our readers.
As Ponders End is in the midst of a frenzy of public plansto 'enhance' the area we have negotiated with the localauthority, Enfield Council, that they pay for two 'extra'pages, within which they give information of their plans, activities etc. These two pages are over and above thatwhich we would be able to afford to provide and theinformation therein is, as previously stated, from thecouncil and may not necessarily always reflect the viewsof the PECDT.
We also try to include items of local interest such as;local history, fun events, readers' observations, etc. Thismeans the newsletter carries a variety of different piecesof information which we hope you will find of interest.
We need you to help us to get this information out there:we have a very small team of volunteers who arestruggling to ensure copies reach all the homes in thearea and on time. What we are looking for is peopleliving in different streets, roads, to offer to distribute thePEN to your own street or very local area. We are alsoasking for local organisations, groups, faith houses etc. tooffer to be a drop-off and pick up point for copies.
If you are interested in doing this or just want to find outmore about it, do please contact the office to have a chatwith us.

Ponders End Artist, Samantha Anne Hutchinson, will be
exhibiting her latest collection of Oil Paintings in July at the
Gallery Fore in Edmonton. She has taken part in the Urban
Futures Pop up Gallery in Ponders End recently, and some of
her paintings will be published in a museum quality book in
New York City in May of this year featuring contemporary
artists from around the world.
Samantha has been invited to exhibit her work in New York
and Italy. She has built up an extensive and wonderfully
diverse portfolio consisting of oil paintings, drawings, wax
works, and sculptures, some of which are housed
permanently at the Gallery Fore in Edmonton.
Samantha writes:
“I am a single mother of two, my son has Autism and this hashad a great impact on my life and subsequently on theartwork I create. Being a full time Mom leaves little sparetime for anything, but the spare time I do have is dedicated tomy craft. Expression through Art has been my greatesttherapy. And I hope to inspire and encourage others to do thesame. One of my long term creative projects involves artworkspecific to disabilities like Autism; I hope to bring moreawareness about Autism through the Art I create and work

with people who have disabilities. I am also painting a seriesof London Scenes to celebrate the diversity and beauty of allthings local to coincide with the Olympic Games later thisyear.
I am passionate in my desire to encourage people (especiallythose without a voice) to express their emotions, hopes andstruggles through the medium of art.
I hope the regeneration of Ponders End will allow for a placeto facilitate Art and Creative pursuits within the community, for all creative people to get involved in.I am a self-taught Artist, I work in all mediums, and my new
work is about people, places, faces and abstraction and arepaintings in Oils. I think Art plays an important role in society:there are social, health, economic and environmental benefitsin arts and cultural activities. I hope to demonstrate thisthrough my teachings and Art.”

New cafe for Vincent House
Vinnie's, the new drop-in cafe at Vincent House, opens itsdoors on Monday, 14th May 2012.
Christian Action Housing Association has given a lease to
PECDT to use the cafe at the front of Vincent House. We
plan to run the cafe as a community centre and meeting
place, a refuge, drop-in information point, soup kitchen and
for youth activities. And many thanks to Enfield CouncilResidents Priority Fund for a grant of £5,433.00 to help buy
the equipment.
We are hiring out the cafe to local groups to provide services
for their own clients. It can also be booked for private
functions. We will show opening times on the door and
bookings on the noticeboard inside the cafe.
COOK FOOD catering courses
It will of course be tremendously helpful having access to our
own kitchen and catering facilities. We will be running the
COOK FOOD catering courses in there funded by the FairShare Trust, starting in May.
Please phone 020 8443 3858 to find out the dates and timesof the courses starting in May.
If you would like to join any of our three kinds of courses,
GROW FOOD, COOK FOOD and LIVE WELL, please do
call me on 020 8443 3858. If I'm not there when you phone,
please leave me a message saying which course you would
like to join.
Already this Spring we have held a LIVE WELL course,
thanks to our trainer and facilitator, Stephen Fox. We will be
starting another in the Summer once the cafe space has
settled down.
Gardening ActivitiesAs the weather improves, the days get longer and plantsspring up all around us, interest is also growing in ourgardening activities. On Sunday 22nd April we started thenext GROW FOOD gardening course in raised beds at theEVERYTHING GARDENS growing space. And from 12thJune to 17th July in the evenings from 1830 to 2030, we areplanning a CONTAINER GARDENING course in VincentHouse.
This Summer, we will be organising in-house courses inconjunction with housing associations and community groupsin Ponders End.
If your group would like a course, do get in touch - but bequick, we have to do them all this year, 2012.
And the lucky people who completed the first gardeningcourse last year have been eating their successes regularly.Everyone was surprised by the healthy growth and theluscious taste of what they helped to plant. Yum! Yum!
As a result of the good work started with PECDT's Fair ShareGrant, we have been able to secure extra help with the cafe,a Capital Growth Grant, a Residents Priority Fund Grant fromEnfield Council and more to look forward to in the form of theCommunity First programme just starting this year andrunning to 2015.
Call us to find out more and watch this space for more details next time.

Community Activities
Spring is here! And along with Spring comes planting…lots
of it! As I’m sure you’re all aware, Ponders End Park was
recently replanted. I was privileged to be a part of that. A
good number of volunteers turned up to help turn the Park
into a beautiful attraction for Ponders End.
I would especially like to thank the children (and staff) of
Oasis Hadley, who, on a DAY OFF, still came to do some
planting. They were very efficient and their conduct on the
live site was impeccable! Thanks kids!
I would also like to thank the Millenium Café for feeding the
hordes of hungry volunteers over the week! The food was
amazing! Thank you!
I have been helping to set up some very new groups this
quarter and hopefully, we will be hearing more from them in
the future. This is great news for the area as it will mean
more services available for the residents of Ponders End.
New Funding Streams
April is also the start of the new funding streams coming out
– there is quite a lot of money available for Ponders End, so
if you have any ideas on how you think it should be spent,
please call me or visit me in the office in Vincent House. You
do not have to be a group, or part of a group, to have a say.
Any Ponders End resident is welcome.

The entrance of the Library is improving, after the lighting of
the trees and the new Library signage, the new Library
garden has been installed by Enfield Council funded by the
GLA Outer London Fund.
Planting beds have been installed at the front of the Library,
creating a welcoming entrance but also making the existing
patch of green safer for young children to play. Inspired by
the long-standing tradition of farming and gardening in
Enfield, the garden is a mix of farm crops and wild flowers.
The planting scheme, developed in partnership with Forty
Hall Farm and the PECDT, includes crops currently
cultivated at the farm: vines, heritage wheat, fruit bushes
and meadow planting. This garden will be an opportunity to
learn more about urban farming but also bring local
residents together to do some gardening.
In the run up to the summer a series of gardening
workshops will be organised at the garden by the PECDT
and Forty Hall Farm. Workshops themes will include:
meadow planting, companion planting, wheat planting and
wine making.

Joseph Swan and Thomas Edison (an American Inventor)
joined forces and in 1883 the Edison & Swan United
Electric Light Company was established. It was commonly
known as “Ediswan”.
In 1886 Ediswan moved production to a former Jute Mill at
Ponders End, Enfield. In 1916 Ediswan set up Britain's first
radio thermionic valve factory at Ponders End. Sir John
Ambrose Fleming’s innovative work was also attributed to the
development of the electric light bulb.

The Elms and stood in Ponders End High St. It was
purchased by Ediswan Lighting Co and demolished in the
early part of the 20th Century to build a Technical College
which still stands today and we know as Swan House.
Ediswans Factory in Ponders End
Ediswans generated a lot of employment for the Ponders End
and Enfield area. Joseph Swan was good friends with
Andrew Carnegie – who championed the setting up of free
libraries.
As a result of this friendship public libraries were one of the
first municipal buildings to have electricity installed.

Because of this history and the location of the Ediswan
Factory – Ponders End Library had the sign LIBRARY
installed and emblazoned in electric lamps on its roof as part
of the Festival of Light in December 2011 – and is becoming
affectionately known as POLLYWOOD.
If anyone has more information about the area and itshistory, please contact The PEN.

The Creative Market will provide a boost to local businesses andenable people who want to set up a shop to test the water
It wasn't just the children who enjoyed the fountain
On Monday 9th April Ponders End Park opened for the first
time after its makeover this winter with a day of free Easter
activities for families. Children from local schools (including
St Mathews and Oasis Hadley) helped plant 4500 plants
during Ponders End Gardening Week the week before.
Alma school were invited to take part in Gardening Week but
because they were participating in a foreign exchange
programme were not able to take part.
We believe the new-look park will be a fantastic facility for all
of Ponders End to enjoy and is part of the multi-million-pound
regeneration of the area. Enfield is one of the greenest
boroughs in London and the work carried out in Ponders End
Park will build on and further enhance the superb facilities we

We are very excited about the Park and market and will
provide a boost to local businesses in the area and enable
people who want to set up a shop to test the water. We’re
determined to support new businesses in Enfield and the
creation of an occasional market inside the park will give
Ponders End a timely boost during a period of economic
uncertainty.
On 25th April 2012 Enfield Council Cabinet will make a
decision regarding the redevelopment of 188-216 High
Street, Ponders End. Once approved, this scheme will deliver
100 new homes and shops with community facilities on the
High Street, as well as unlocking additional new homes on
the former Middlesex University site. Residents we have
spoken to understand that the regeneration of Ponders End
may cause some disruption. But we will continue to work with
local people and businesses to minimise disruption through
this time of change.
Dear Residents,
The 2012 Olympic Games are nearly upon us and don’t thinkthat just because we live a little way from the main action thatall the fun will pass us by. Far from it! Thanks to our locationin the Lee Valley and supported by funding from the OuterLondon Fund, Ponders End will host a range of outdoorevents to bring the Olympics to our doorstep. The events thisyear will include a Waterway festival at Enfield Lock, aBandstand Marathon marking the end of the Games, as wellas N E Enfield Diamond Jubilee celebrations and aChristmas Festival. These events are an important part ofEnfield Council’s regeneration of Ponders End because theynot only provide things for local people to do, but they alsoattract people from other areas to spend money in our localshops and in our High Street.

January January 2013: Oasis Hadley Academy opens
Construction of the Academy is rapidlyprogressing …
Construction of the new build Oasis Academy Hadley
is progressing rapidly on site in South Street, with the
distinctive framed shape of the Academy’s ‘agora’
clearly visible. To the right of the agora, which will be
the heart of the Academy, is the beginning of the
primary school. The Falcon Road Spur is now almost
complete and due to be opened for use in mid April.
We would like to thank residents who have worked
with us to get this off the ground.
Alma Estate and South Street…
We have listened and have heard your concerns
about quality of life on the Alma Estate. That is why
we have asked officers to carry out an in-depth
consultation with residents about the future of their
homes. Residents have been able to access
independent advice from Independent Tenants and
Leaseholders Advisors StUF (Strategic Urban
Futures), and a final test of opinion will be held to
establish whether there is support for radical
transformation of the estate. The outcome of the
consultation will be put into the South Street Planning
Brief in the summer and will be made available to the
wider community for comment. A decision will be
made by Enfield Council Cabinet in July as to the
future of this estate.
The plan overleaf shows the proposals to improve
South Street above and beyond the ‘essential’ works
required for the Oasis Hadley Academy. This public
realm project, known as South Street East, has been
designed taking into account the future regeneration
of the Alma Estate and will seek to improve Ponders
End Station square and bridge; connect the new
Academy piazza to the rest of South Street; green the
area and make it more attractive to cyclists and
pedestrians; and connect the newly improved
Ponders End Park to the Lee Valley Regional Park,
which would be great for all residents, children and
families. If approved on 30th April (Key Decision
reference 3505), works will start in autumn 2012.
We look forward to working with you over the coming
months to continue to regenerate Ponders End and
make the most of all the Olympics has to offer.
