Pastor’s Pen by Rev Mark & Wendy Olson
2020 How did that happen? It’s a mystery, but here we are!
Like a crisp, clean sheet of paper, the year lays before us, waiting to record the story of what is to come. There
is much we do not know about 2020, but a few things we do know….
We will see continued work on replacing the siding to protect the building, new ways to communicate the
wonderful story of God’s work through Community Presbyterian Church, The Session will work on some
long term plans for the future.
Something happening soon in 2020 is that the Olson’s are taking three weeks of Study Leave beginning after
worship on Sunday, Jan. 19th. We’ll fly out of PDX, stopping in SFO, Hong Kong and Singapore, before land-
ing in Dhaka, Bangladesh. We will return to PDX on Feb. 13th.
Between those two very long plane rides, we will immerse ourselves in learning from and working with mis-
sion partners at Basha. Chapel by the Sea developed a relationship with Basha in 2018 and we have learned of
their extraordinary ministry to offer dignified work that provides a sustainable livelihood for women at risk
and survivors of trafficking. This includes:
- An outreach program to women trapped in the sex trade.
- A training program for women entering the mainstream workforce.
- A home for young girls who were previously fending for themselves.
- Counselling, mentoring and psychiatric care as needed.
- School and tutoring for all children of Basha employees (120+ children), including two meals a day, at four
of Basha’s five Production Centers.
- Training Rohingya refugee women to sew.
Basha has grown from 13 women in one small Dhaka flat to more than 150 full-time production workers in
five production centers throughout Bangladesh. You can learn more about Basha here https://
friendsofbasha.org/ and here http://bashaboutique.com/
We will travel with a team of gifted people (brothers Peter and Ilan, who are puppeteers and niece, Angela,
who is a professional photographer). During the trip, we will bring greetings and funds from the churches.
We will provide training for staff (both those that work with artisans and with children), share skills in puppet-
ry and photography, and Bible studies and spiritual care. Mark will also likely do some carpentry.
We also will be learning from the people of Basha and of Bangladesh. We will learn how to care for the most
vulnerable, how to extend God’s love in society-changing ways, how to see Jesus in those we meet and how to
love him by loving those who are shunned, abused and denigrated.
As comfortable, privileged, white, Americans who are trying to follow Jesus, we pray to learn of the profound
ways that we are connected to every other person on this planet and how our lives impact others. We are deep-
ly grateful for this opportunity and look forward to what Jesus will do in us along the way.
There are several ways we will “take you with us”. You can make a special donation and we’ll take that with
us. You can check the church website for a link to our travel blog. Depending on internet access, we may
even make an “appearance” in worship one of the Sundays.
We invite you to join us in prayer; for this trip and for the beautiful work of Basha – a house of hope.
Blessings, Pastors Wendy and Mark

“Per Capita 2020”
Each January we as a church pay to the Presbyterian Church USA, an amount based on the number of members we declare. These funds support leadership education in the church. It supports the General Assembly-- a biannual meeting of the national church which was held in Portland in 2016.
These funds helped our efforts to find Wendy and Mark. It helps to maintain the data base that matches potential pastors with potential churches.
We ask that you contribute $36.50 per individual or if there are two of you, $73.00. Write “per capita” on the Memo line of your checks.
Thank you.

“BIBLE STUDY”
The Book of James
Growing happens naturally. Growing up takes work. We don’t wake up wise, and faith is not a reflex. Both take practice. James, a pastor, confronts the confidence we place in our own capacity for
wisdom and faith. He challenges us to instead receive God’s wisdom—freely given and available to all—to fill in what we lack. Discover the practices of faith and wisdom to help you grow in Christian
character.
Kick off potluck: January 8, 2020 at the home of Barbara Chase at 11:00am.
The study begins January 15th at 10:00am at the church.
