CHAIR COMPETITION
An essay in English or Welsh.
£10 prize will be awarded for the winner plus 50 house points. All completed entries
to any member of the Welsh or English Departments.
The Chair will be awarded to the person who, in the opinion of the judges produces
the best piece of creative writing on any subject in Welsh or English.
Prose pieces should be approximately 1000 words long and poetry should comprise a
short anthology of about 6-12 poems.
MRS REES PERPETUAL TROPHY
This cup was donated by Mrs. E Rees and is presented to the pupil who enters the
greatest number of competitions in the Eisteddfod. So you must keep a close count
on the number of competitions you enter. Remember there are 50 house points for
the winner!

Art & Design
Eisteddfod Competitions Years 7 & 8
Using the paper plate you will be given by your art teacher design and produce a
Welsh meal e.g. a cooked breakfast, slices of bara brith, Welsh rarebit and so on.
Include welsh symbols (dragon, daffodils, leeks), colours (welsh and celtic flag) and
your House colours (Branwen, Gwenllian, Llywelyn and Owain).
Use paper, card, magazines, paint, felt pens, fabric and so on to create an impact.
Please write your name, house and description of the meal on the reverse.
Years 9 & 10
Using a photograph of a local landscape or local seascape produce a drawing, painting
or mixed media picture to A4 size.
Please write your name, house and the name of the view on the reverse.

Business Studies Competition
YEARS 10/11
Produce a leaflet for new Year 7 pupils explaining to them the business software
available to them and what it could be used for. Extra marks will be given for eye
catching design and the use of words/phrases.
YEARS 12/13
Produce a detailed report of business plan on a local medium or large size business
that’s considering inward investment into the area.

Dance Competitions
You must prepare a dance of your choice no longer than 3 minutes long. The dance can be performed as a
group, pair or solo and can be of varying style.
Dances must be choreographed beforehand and not improvised on audition day.
The winning dances will be put through to the stage competitions and performed during the Eisteddfod
Please bring your music on a CD so that it can be put onto a playlist if you are successful in reaching the
stage competition.

DRAMA Eisteddfod Competitions
There will be a LOWER school competition and an UPPER school competition. ALL years to complete the same task.
In groups of 4 or 5 FROM THE SAME HOUSE IF POSSIBLE, you must imagine you are a group of advertising executives preparing a short performance aimed at promoting wales as an exciting tourist destination. (Watch the advert campaign starring Rhod Gilbert for ‘Visit
Wales’ as inspiration). When rehearsing your piece consider the following elements:
Interesting places to visit
What is it that makes Wales unique?
Keeping the exaggerated advertising style
Use of humour
Use of welsh vocabulary
Any DRAMA techniques (synchronisation/slow motion/direct address/choral speaking/song/physical theatre etc)

Write a monologue. Invent a character. Your monologue should be no longer than five
minutes.
The students who produce the best writing (Monologue or some other aspect of
writing) will be entered for the Chair Competition.

Produce a poster about your home area (village, town, street, part of town).
What makes your place special? Include both natural and human features.
You can include photographs, sketches, stories, poems etc.

Produce a poster entitled “Climate change”. Use knowledge from lessons and the
internet to research climate change in Wales. Use images and text to demonstrate
the range of weather experienced in Wales.
YEAR 9
Create a poster entitled “The End of Sweat Shops”. Think of as many ideas as you
can to help people in LEDC’S live a better life and receive a fairer wage and more
humane working conditions
YEARS 10 & 11
Produce an A3 revision guide for a topic you are studying;
Year 10 = Climate Change, Tectonics, Population.
Year 11 = Coasts.

Year 7
Design a poster advertising a local Welsh castle. Include information about the
history of the castle and its significance.
Year 8-10
Who is your Welsh hero and why? This can be produced as either:
A written response
A poster
Using ICT e.g. Powerpoint or Movie Maker presentation.
Year 11-13
“Everyday when I wake up, I thank the Lord I’m Welsh” – what makes you proud to be
Welsh? History, culture, sport? Produce a persuasive response.
This can be produced as a written response or for those of you who enjoy ICT, you
may want to produce a Powerpoint or Movie Maker presentation.

The Welsh have made a considerable contribution to mathematics. Research the life
and work of a Welsh mathematician and illustrate your findings on a poster. Extra
points will be given for the use of Welsh.

Welsh name for it.

Design a Welsh themed pizza. Be creative and think about Welsh ingredients that
could be used, colours and shapes that represent Wales.

Design a t-shirt that could be used to promote Wales at any sporting events or
concerts. Aim to sell the great things about Wales through the images you use.

YEARS 10 & 11
Produce a leaflet that can be given to new parents to inform them of the benefits of
a healthy diet for their children. Include relevant information about the foods they
should avoid giving to them and those that are better for their children.
Presentation is important, as it the quality of the information included.
Health & Social Care
YEARS 10 & 11
Produce a poster that could be used in a local library or leisure centre to inform the
local community about the different health, social care and children’s services that
are available to them in the local area.
YEARS 12 & 13
Produce a leaflet that could inform teenagers of the dangers of either smoking,
underage drinking, illegal substances or unprotected sex. Make it appropriate for the
age group but it must point out the serious risks to health and well being of the
chosen topic.

Design and Technology Competition
Design Brief: Many schools in Bridgend have had new buildings built recently. Imagine
that the council want your school to be re-built to make it more modern. Design a new
comprehensive school for Pencoed. You can enter with a hand sketched and labelled
idea, a CAD drawing (Google Sketch up, Pro Desktop or 2D Design) or even a small
model.
Specification:
• The school must incorporate the feel of WALES.
• The school must have suitable rooms to teach all lessons in.
• The school must be an eco-school (i.e. sustainably run such as solar panels).
• The design/model must be labelled with materials and manufacturing processes
suggested.
• The design/model must include measurements or be to scale.
