Gas delivery switch and basal flow
On/off switch (aka gas delivery switch)
Supplementary gas selector switch: air or nitrous oxide
With the on/off switch in the ‘on’ position, a basal oxygen flow of 100-200ml/min is provided. The flow can only be turned off by turning the switch to ‘off’. The flow cannot be reduced to zero using the flowmeter trim knob.
Oxygen supply indicator (turns red in event of oxygen failure)
3
Oxygen failure warning whistle
• The whistle sounds when the oxygen pressure falls below 200kpa (pipeline pressure is 400kpa). It ceases when oxygen pressure falls below 70kpa.
• Minimum sound duration is 7 seconds, as there is an oxygen reservoir in the system.
• The oxygen supply indicator turns red • All other gases cease in the event of an oxygen
failure • If you hear it, turn on the oxygen cylinder to
restore flow
4
Gas hoses and schraeder valves
Scavenging hose (clear)
The schraeder valves only accept the correct gas or vacuum hose
5
Gas supply gauges
O2 cylinder (137x100kPa)
O2 pipeline (4x100kPa)
N2O cylinder (not essential) (137x100kPa)
N2O pipeline (4x100kPa)
Air pipeline (4x100kPa)
(NOTE: a nitrous oxide cylinder is NOT necessary. These have been removed from most machines)
6
Flowmeters and anti-hypoxic device
A gear linkage between the oxygen control knob and a needle valve in the nitrous oxide flow ensures a minimum of 30% oxygen is delivered at all times (i.e. reducing oxygen flow mechanically restricts nitrous oxide flow)
Either nitrous oxide or air can be selected in addition to oxygen, but not both, using the supplementary gas selector switch
7
Setting gas flow
The oxygen flow control is longer and has a different surface contour to the other controls. This is an ISO standard.
8
Vaporizer
Depress the button at the back of the vaporizer dial to and rotate anticlockwise to switch on.
9
Filling the sevoflurane vaporizer
10
Common gas outlet (CGO) and oxygen flush
• The breathing circuit connects to the common gas outlet. This outlet has a 15mm internal diameter and 22mm external diameter
• The emergency oxygen flush button provides between 30 and 75l/min of vapour free oxygen

• Waste gas scavenging prevents pollution of the theatre • Waste gases are vented to the atmosphere

Appendix 2: APL valve
Valve fully closed to pressurise circuit (clockwise rotation)
1. Adjustable pressure limiting ( APL) valve operation: the valve controls the maximum pressure in the circuit, up to 60cm H2O for a Bain circuit.
Rotate valve clockwise to increase circuit pressure for bag ventilation
