Come and have a cup of tea!
We could use this February newsletter, a month that is often known as “Black His-
tory Month”, to discuss the accomplishments of African-American men and women
throughout our nation’s history. We could write about well-known people such as
Frederick Douglass, Shirley Chisholm, Marcus Garvey or Oprah Winfrey, to name
just a few. We could even quote the United States Department of Defense who
stated: “African-Americans have a long and
distinguished history in the United States mili-
tary and have defended our nation with loy-
alty, honor, and patriotism, during peacetime
and in every war fought by or within the
United States”. We could do all that and
more, and still not really make a dent in de-
scribing all the contributions made by African-
American citizens in this nation daily. So, we
decided instead to use this space to highlight
a special cultural event planned here at the
senior center in honor and recognition of Afri-
can Americans and introduce you to the one
who inspired the idea.
The Penn Hills Senior Center will be hosting a special Black History cultural event.
As Phyllis described in last month’s newsletter, the event will be held on Tuesday,
February 25, 2020. It will begin with breakfast, followed by a film titled “Wylie Ave-
nue Days”. The regularly scheduled lunch will be served followed by specialty tea
and cookies. In addition, we will have door prizes, trivia games, dancers and a
singer for your entertainment. Tickets are on sale in the Center office through Fri-
day, February 7th. The cost is $3.00 per person. Janice Brookins, pictured above,
headed up the committee and is the inspiration behind the event. She has been
coming to the senior center for about nine years and participates in Tai Chi, knitting
class, and serves as a member of the Advisory Board here.
It is important to Janice to not only help others learn more about her culture but to
debunk any misconceptions that they may have. We need to move away from racial
stereotypes, half truths, and myths that cause division. Events such as the one
planned on February 25th give us the opportunity to simply sit down with one an-
other and come to realize that we are much more than just our exterior. “Just come
and have a cup of tea and let’s get to know each other a little better”. Perhaps then,
as Tree of Life Rabbi Jeffery Myers recently stated, we would find that “we are all far
more alike than different.” Similarly, Janice believes that “if we could just love one
another with the same love we have for ourselves and let our differences serve to
be an opportunity to learn from one another, we could make this world a brighter
place. Let’s do it!

Center Security Surveillance: The cameras record 24/7, 365 days a year and the recordings are held for a very limited length of time. This action was taken to provide the best safety for our seniors and staff. This includes the ’new’ computer lab, and I check it often. And remember to smile!!!
Veteran’s Meeting: Reminder: Thursday February 20, 2020, is the date we are planning —notices will be sent out—if the weather is extremely cold or if there is a lot of snow, this may change. Again, if you would like to receive the meeting notice via e-mail , I need your e-mail address—if you would prefer to have your name removed from the mailing/email list, please call 412-244-3400 or 412-244-3407 and leave a mes-sage.
Co-Pilot Scanning: Remember to scan your Co-Pilot cards when you come into the Center. If you are a VOLUNTEER it is very important that you enter your hours each time you volunteer. Some VOLUNTEERS do no take the time to do this and it is so very important—if you miss signing in on the first floor, please stop in the Lunchroom office and do so. We notice that there are some people who select the “Volunteer” square who are not volunteers, please take the time to read what you have selected. If you ARE a Volunteer and do not record your day and time, we have problems when we make the lists for our Annual Volunteer Luncheon. Please remember to check, select the correct activities and if you are a volunteer, please remember to record your day and hours.
Annual Volunteer Luncheon: We have been reminding our volunteers to make sure they enter their OWN volunteer hours when they come to the Center—95% have done that, but the other 5% have not and it will cause a problem—if you have not entered 50 hours, you may not be able to attend. Remember we will be honoring the volunteers and hours for 2019 (we are always a year behind). If you have questions, please see Lena or Jan and they will discuss this with you.
Upcoming events: We are hoping to have events for St. Patrick’s Day, etc., but there will be only 100 tick-ets available and there will be a charge and remember they are NON-REFUNDABLE with the exception of cancellation by the Center, in that event all monies will be returned. NO tickets will be held and if you want one, and cannot get in to purchase it, then someone will have to pay and pick it up for you—this takes care of any confusion or duplicate tickets. While some regularly scheduled daily activities may be cancelled the day of a special event not all are—if you plan to participate in a regularly scheduled program the day of a special event, BUT do not want to purchase a ticket for the special event, you can do that. However, you will not be able to attend any part of the plans for that day’s celebration, i.e. lunch, entertainment, etc., this is only fair to the people who purchased tickets. We are also asking that attendees be registered Center participants 60 years of age and older. Sometimes tickets are sold to individuals who are not registered and we are not able to “count” them in order to reach our contract numbers.
Addition to Lunchroom: yep, we are or already have purchased a new television to be installed in the Center lunchroom to enable us to show a movie, or something special on television for our participants—maybe we can finally install that darn Wii game we bought a dozen years ago!!!!!

It has been brought to my attention that tickets are not being ‘fairly’ available regarding number of days tickets are sold. The number of available days is based on items that may have to be ordered in ad-vance, i.e. special food items from our food vendor, etc., NOT because we want the event to fail. Valen-tines Day —15 days Black History Month—15 days

…..Bill and Helen Bunn for many years of wonderful devotion and service to the monthly BIG BINGO.
Under your direction money was raised to be used for many events here at the Center and we are so
very grateful for your time and patience. While we know you are ‘retiring’ from the BIG BINGO, we are
glad that you will still be participating here at the Center. You are both fantastic volunteers that have
shared so much of your time planning, ‘advertising’, and introducing your friends to the Center and Big
Bingo. Again, many thanks from the staff, volunteers and the many Bingo players through the years.

Old Mother Hubbard
Went to her cupboard
To get out her morning pills
She looked in dismay
At the colorful array
Supposed to be curing her ills
Purple and blue
Bright yellow ones too
And red ones are not a surprise
For all aches and pains
And whatever remains
Just makes her blood pressure rise
Its tough to get old
And when you are told
You need all the meds to survive
It dampens the mood
When you think of the food
All this pill money could provide
Old Mother Hubbard
Look back in your cupboard
Something else is in there, you see
You may have just missed
That you have been blessed
With a gift card to shop at Aldi

Home Emergency Repair Warranty
Homeowners know how costly un-
expected home repairs can be. This
is especially true for repairs needed
to the exterior water service line.
You may not know that the
“Municipality of Penn Hills has se-
lected Service Line Warranties of
America (SLWA), a premier pro-
vider of home emergency repair
programs to homeowners nation-
wide to offer Exterior Water Service
Line Coverage and Exterior Sewer/
Septic Line Coverage to Penn Hills
homeowners.”
According to a recent letter put out
by the Municipality of Penn Hills,
“Many homeowners are not aware
that they are responsible for certain
systems; for example, many Ameri-
cans don’t know that they are re-
sponsible to pay for repairs to water
service and sewer/septic lines on
private property. Plans from SLWA
give homeowners financial relief
from the cost of covered repairs due
to breakdowns of major systems
inside and outside their homes”.
