CATHOLIC CAMPUS MINISTRY A T P E N N S T A T E

Eighth Sunday Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Timein Ordinary Time

February 27, 2011February 27, 2011

The mission of the Catholic Campus Ministry at Penn State is to give witness to a Catholic Presence in University Life and to promote and sustain the well being of the whole Catholic Person. We welcome students, faculty, staff , resident community members, and alumni. Grounded in the tradition of the Church, Catholic Campus Ministry provides an environment and fellowship that challenge members to encounter the Living Christ and be transformed by His Spirit. Liturgies, retreats, service proj-ects, Bible studies, prayer groups, programs for Catholic critical thinkers, and other activities nurture our faith and open our hearts to hear God’s message for us today.

Feast of FaithPostures of the Mass

In the Mass, we pray not only with our lips, but with our bodies as well. We stand when the ministers enter. In Western culture, standing is a sign of attention, a mark of respect: all stand when the judge enters the courtroom, for example. Standing is also an ancient posture of prayer, mentioned frequently in the Old Testament. When the readings begin, we sit down: a listening posture. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet to listen to his teaching; the crowds sat on the hillside or the seashore to hear his words. Kneeling is another posture that is full of meaning. It expresses adoration and worship, but it can also express humility and contrition. We bow: a sign of honor and reverence, acknowledging the presence of God, especially when we receive the Eucharist. And there are other ritual gestures as well--striking the breast, genufl ecting, and of course making the sign of the cross. The liturgy invites us to pray with our whole person—with heart and mind, voice and body.

Lenten Fast and Abstinence GuidelinesAsh Wednesday & Good Friday Fasting

All Fridays of Lent Abstinence

Season of Lent

Lenten LunchesCome to Eisenhower Chapel every Wednesday at 12:15pm (starting March 16) for our weekly Lenten Prayer Service, with a simple lunch to follow in the Garden Room.

Stations of the CrossPlease join us each Friday of Lent at 12:15pm (starting March 18) in Eisenhower Chapel for the Stations of the Cross. It will last approx. half an hour, thus allowing for a luncheon of “spiritual” food!

Spring Break Mass Schedule March 7–11Weekend Liturgy Schedule

March 5 • 4p | March 6 • 10:30aMarch 12 • 4p | March 13 • 10:30a & 9p

Starting on Friday, March 4, there will be no Daily Mass, Confessions, Lenten Lunch, or Stations of the Cross. Our normal schedule will resume on March 14.

Fasting: One full meal plus two smaller meals which should not equal the full meal. No eating at other times of the day. Those between the ages of 18-60 are bound to fast. Pregnant/nursing mothers are exempt.Abstinence: No meat; those 14 years old and older are bound to abstain.

Operation Rice Bowl As part of our faith community’s Lenten observance, we will participate in Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten program, Operation Rice Bowl. Since 1975, Operation Rice Bowl has inspired Catholics in the United States to pray, fast, learn and give as we increase our understanding of our global community. We will connect this understanding with the principles of Catholic Social Teaching throughout our Lenten journey. We encourage you to participate in Operation Rice Bowl at home with your family and loved ones.

This weekend we will be passing out cardboard rice bowls at all Masses, which fold into small banks where you can put spare change throughout Lent. At the end of Lent we’ll collect the money and send it on to Catholic Relief Services. Last year we were able to send $2,936 to CRS.
