Pennyrile CHURCH OF CHRIST June 16, 2013 On the web: www.pennyrilechurch.com Follow us on twitter: @pennyrilechurch Email us at: [email protected] Imperishable (I Peter 1:22-25) It is unfathomable to me that there will be a day when I no longer exist in this body. It is even more frighten- ing to contemplate even for a moment that my consciousness might end. It is a dark prognosis even for the most opmisc one who believes that all there is to this life is . . . this life. But for the believer the future is bright. The New Testament is full of warnings for us to get our act together, repent, and live for God. There is the judgment scene in Mahew 25:31-46 which ends with the all or nothing verse, “And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” There is the humbling and frightening reminder near the end of the Sermon on the Mount which states, “Not every one who says to me ‘Lord, Lord’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father.” (Mt. 7:21). As Chrisans we believe that we have been created by God for life here and for life aſter we have shed this body. Peter speaks in terms of our being purified by obedience to truth and by “sincere love of the brethren.” We don’t oſten think in terms of purity, but according to Peter that is what we are if we have been born anew. This according to Peter is an imperishable seed which is the abiding Word of God. Peter then says that this word, which is imperishable, is the good news which we have heard and believed. The word of God abides in us and makes us pure and holy before God. The word abides in us because we love and are obedient. Think about it for a moment – imperishable. As people whom God created with the ability to choose, we can choose to be renewed by God. We can choose to obey and love, or not. We have the opportunity to choose our direcon before the day that we leave this life for the next, but once that day comes, our course is set. We are flesh, but we have the word that dwells in us. It is my prayer for this congregaon to live in the truth and in sincere love for each other. We are on a journey toward God together. And we have good news to share with anyone who will listen. Connue to invite your friends and family to be a part of the body of Christ that meets here. We are “God’s own people, [to] declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (I Peter 2:9). May you be challenged and encouraged by Jacob’s lesson today, and pray for the safe return of the group in Honduras.

Imperishable

(I Peter 1:22-25)

It is unfathomable to me that there will be a day when I no longer exist in this body. It is even more frighten-

ing to contemplate even for a moment that my consciousness might end. It is a dark prognosis even for the

most optimistic one who believes that all there is to this life is . . . this life.

But for the believer the future is bright. The New Testament is full of warnings for us to get our act together,

repent, and live for God. There is the judgment scene in Matthew 25:31-46 which ends with the all or

nothing verse, “And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” There is

the humbling and frightening reminder near the end of the Sermon on the Mount which states, “Not every

one who says to me ‘Lord, Lord’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my

Father.” (Mt. 7:21).

As Christians we believe that we have been created by God for life here and for life after we have shed this

body. Peter speaks in terms of our being purified by obedience to truth and by “sincere love of the

brethren.” We don’t often think in terms of purity, but according to Peter that is what we are if we have

been born anew. This according to Peter is an imperishable seed which is the abiding Word of God.

Peter then says that this word, which is imperishable, is the good news which we have heard and believed.

The word of God abides in us and makes us pure and holy before God. The word abides in us because we

love and are obedient. Think about it for a moment – imperishable.

As people whom God created with the ability to choose, we can choose to be renewed by God. We can

choose to obey and love, or not. We have the opportunity to choose our direction before the day that we

leave this life for the next, but once that day comes, our course is set.

We are flesh, but we have the word that dwells in us. It is my prayer for this congregation to live in the truth

and in sincere love for each other. We are on a journey toward God together. And we have good news to

share with anyone who will listen. Continue to invite your friends and family to be a part of the body of

Christ that meets here. We are “God’s own people, [to] declare the wonderful deeds of him who called you

out of darkness into his marvelous light.” (I Peter 2:9).

May you be challenged and encouraged by Jacob’s lesson today, and pray for the safe return of the group in

Honduras.
