From the Principals... Book Week is one of the favourite weeks of the school year for students and staff. Once again classes have chosen a Book Week book to engage with. Today was our Book Week assembly and it was great to see students dressed up in their costumes and hearing about the wonderful work students have been doing on their focus book. Book Week lunch time activities have kept numerous students very busy this week. The level of creativity and engagement has been remarkable. A big thank you to the SSOs who have organised and run these activities. At our open day parents will have the opportunity to see all the wonderful creations. Wednesday 5 th September is our school Open Day. Parents/caregivers and members of the community will have the opportunity to wander through classrooms and chat to students about what we do at Penola Primary. The day will start at 9am with a Principal’s tour for new and prospecve parents. From 10:00am-12:00pm the school will be open for everyone to explore. You are welcome to stay for the two hours or pop in for 10 minutes. Morning tea will be provided in the library. Environment Group On the 7th August our Environment Group headed to the Naracoorte Caves to aend the third forum this year..... yes Ozzy it was at the caves and we did go the right way! Aſter revising our magic spots that we discovered at the Earthkeepers’ Camp last term we learned about environmental weeds. One of these is Boneseed, a South African plant that establishes itself in bushland and outcompetes nave species. Each plant can produce more than 50,000 seeds and in the space of 20 minutes the 5 of us prevented over 75 million seeds from going into the environment. Great work guys! Aſter lunch Shelley, Pip, Dylan and Todd received another key which they earned because of things they have done to reduce their impact on the environment. Over the next 3 months we will be working hard to introduce more posive changes to the school and to share our knowledge with others. On Friday, 10th August our environment group was invited to aend the annual Waste and Recycling Reducon Challenge Awards ceremony at The Barn. The compeon is sponsored by the Limestone Coast Local Government Associaon (LCLGA) and the awards were presented by the Shadow Minister for Planning and Local Government, Tony Piccolo, and the President of LCLGA, Erika Vickery. Environment Group

On the 7th August our Environment Group headed to the Naracoorte Caves to attend the third forum this year..... yes Ozzy it was at the caves and we did go the right way! After revisiting our magic spots that we discovered at the Earthkeepers’

Camp last term we learned about environmental weeds. One of these is Boneseed, a South African plant that establishes itself in bushland and outcompetes native species. Each plant can produce more than 50,000 seeds and in the space of 20 minutes the 5 of us prevented over 75 million seeds from going into the environment. Great work guys! Afterwards we visited the Caroline Landfill Site to see where all of the waste in the region ends up and then headed to the Mt Gambier Waste Transfer Station to see how they manage the waste and recycling. We also got a sneak peek at the new Mt Gambier Re-use Centre which is opening in October. Anything that can be reused can be taken here for someone else to buy so keep an eye out for their ads.

It was an eye opener to see the mountains of rubbish (especially the soft plastics) that humans produce, but inspirational to see the positive steps our region is taking to reduce the waste that ends up in landfill. Stay tuned for more from our wonderful environment group members.

Father’s Day Stall

The annual Father’s Day stall will be held on Friday the 31st August in the gym immediately following the assembly. All gifts are expertly wrapped by very talented parent helpers and cost $5 each. Students will have the opportunity to select a gift from the huge range of items.

School Football The school football season finished last Sunday with the annual carnival in Naracoorte. Following the carnival, players and their families enjoyed a barbecue and drinks back at McCorquindale Park. A huge thankyou goes to the Wooding family, Windara Bakery and the IGA for their generous donations. Another big vote of thanks goes to coach, Ben Henry, who worked tirelessly with the team throughout the season and I know that he was particularly pleased with the boys’ attitude and skill development over the past few months. Thanks also to those who helped with umpiring, timing, transport...

Hot Shots Tennis This week all classes enjoyed their first taste of the Hot Shots Tennis Program which is being delivered by coach, Dave Boyce, through the Sporting

Schools initiative. The 40-minute lessons are conducted on Mondays and Tuesdays and will continue for the next two weeks. On Tuesday, September 11th our Years 3 and 4 students have been invited to McCorquindale Park to participate in a Hot Shots carnival conducted by TennisSA. A note concerning this will be sent home to relevant families in the near future.

The Library Needs Your Help!

We have just received a HUGE number of new, levelled texts to be used in Junior Primary. The library is in need of help covering

them, so they can go into the classrooms as soon as possible. There is going to be a morning tea/ covering ses-sion in the library on the next two Thursday morn-ings (August 30th and September 6th) from 9 until 11am. Please come along if you are able. There will be tea, coffee and home baking, as well as good com-pany. This is a great way to spend a morning with friends and meet other parents. Don’t worry if you have never covered books be-fore, SSOs will be there to help out. We would also welcome anyone who wants to take books home to cover. Just drop into the library and we will give you the books, contact and the magic covering tool. Please give Janet a ring in the library if you have any questions.

BOOK WEEK LUNCHTIME ACTIVITIES

Every lunchtime this week in the library, there are Book Week activities taking place. Book Week’s theme this year is ‘Find Your Treasure’ We think imagination is our treasure, and the activities reflect this. Each session starts with a mystery guest reading their favourite book. Mrs Heyn, dressed and talking like a pirate was defi-nitely a hit! Students have been painting gorgeous water colours of native flowers, creating imaginative treasure maps and recycling toilet rolls into any creation their imagina-tions comes up with. We are loving watching students using the treasure of their imagination!
