Reflecting on our own business, 2016 has brought with it both change and challenge!

To ?Remain? or ?Leave?, that is the question. By the time you read this, you will have or will be about to put your respective ?X?s? in the appropriate box? And the recriminations will be about to start, whatever the outcome. Is it me or is our society, and especially our politicians, losing the plot. As I write this,

the whole political debate seems to have spiralled into bitter and emotional argument and personal finger pointing where us poor members of a democracy have no idea what is right, what is wrong and who to believe. Nobody seems to know what the consequences for the UK and Europe will be one way or another. Best of luck with casting your vote!

The editor and publisher seem to be putting another splendid edition of our Newsletter for your enjoyment and education and I hope you will find plenty of interesting articles and memory teasers! Apart from the usual social events there is also a piece to mark the 40th anniversary of the first MIDANZ installation in 1976.

On the social side, after the success of last year?s event we are hosting another lunch in London on 4 July. As space was

limited at the old venue, we have moved the Turkish TAS restaurant in Borough High Street. I have yet to meet anyone who has not enjoyed the food at the TAS and the excellent value.

You will also see the papers for the forthcoming AGM on 7 September and the Party that will follow. We hope you will be able to come and enjoy good food, wine and above all to meet old friends again.

I am very pleased to report that 3 members have offered to serve on our committee since last year. I mentioned Andy Woska in the last newsletter and, since then, Jeannette Nunn and Denise Murphy have offered to join us as well. The success of our Association is largely dependent the members who are able and willing to give up some of their time to help us run the Association and its activities. Unfortunately, there is an increasing number of vacancies for RLO?s, who also play an important role in helping the Association achieve its aims. Whilst we will review the existing RLO structure and process please let a member of the committee know if you can help or if you have a view on how we can better organise the ?association network?.

In closing, my granddaughter asked me for a pet spider for her birthday, so I went to the pet shop and they were £70. ?Blow this,? I thought, ?I can get them cheaper off the web!? Sorry.

Message from The Chai r m an

It?s encouraging that we have already made so much progress and have a clear strategy not only to correct short-term performance, but to drive our business to outperformance in the coming years. In practice this means we are increasingly selective about the customers we want to work with, placing great importance on the return we get from them. We are continually focusing on our costs and expense management. And we are fully committed to simplification.

Our approach as we move through this period of transition is best summarised by the four strategic priorities that underpin our Group plan:

Create a simpler, better capitalised, better balanced and more agile bank

Focus our efforts on attractive areas where we can carve out a winning position

Drive a ?purpose and values-led? transformation of the bank

Build a superior everyday experience for our people and customers in order to compete in the digital age.

The plan is clear and we are moving quickly to implement it. If you look beyond some of the headline noise in this half?s results, you will start to see some really positive signs, such as our underlying expense numbers coming off, which will carry into the second half and into next year; and the Risk Weighted Asset reductions we have achieved in recent months that are already beginning to positively impact our net margins.

I will leave you with my own view that we?re on a journey to outperformance and have already taken some big steps towards repositioning the business for future success.

Many thanks,

Diana Brightmore-Armour

Welcome to the Summer 2016 edition of our ANZ Pensioners Association Newsletter.

I wrote the first draft of my Editorial on a plane on my way to Stockholm for a long weekend. We were on the plane stuck at Heathrow due to a power failure at Stockholm airport with no idea as to when we would be able to take off, so I decided to use my time wisely

! After nearly 4 hours on board and still stuck on the runway, the Pilot suddenly announced that we were finally able to take off and to cheers from the passengers we were on our way - don?t we love travelling!! We finally made it to Stockholm, forgot all the hassle and had a great time there. It is a city we would highly recommend.

By the time you receive this Newsletter we will all know the answer to the EU referendum - will it be In or Out? I whole heartedly agree with what Peter has said in his Chairman?s Message. The whole electioneering process in my view hasn?t been edifying or produced a sensible debate ? overall a pretty uninspiring experience for what is a very important decision for the country.

The good news is the Queens 90th Birthday celebrations. I hope you have been enjoying some of the celebrations that have been organised for this. What an amazing Queen she is and what a great Monarch who has served the Country so well.

Long may she reign!

And so, with one thing and another, it has been an eventful few months.

As always, it is lovely to receive all your articles, letters and reports on the social events and of course photographs both current and from the past which all add to the stories. As you will see from the list of Diary Dates for 2016, we are continuing to develop our social activities in London and across the Regions. It is great to see a growing number of old friends attending the events and we hope that this will continue.

I?m looking forward to hearing from you and hopefully catching up with you at one or more of the social events during 2016. In addition to the Newsletter, details of all the forthcoming events and activities are also on the website www.anzpauk.co.uk.

I would also like to say a big thank you as always to Tony (Twohey) for all his support and hard work in helping to develop and produce the Newsletter.

Finally, I hope you enjoy the rest of the Summer and that it will be a good one with plenty of sunshine and warmth.

With very best wishes to you all

Lynn (Williams)

It is 40 years since the Midas/ MIDANZ Computer system was installed in ANZ New York on 6 June 1976. It was the first overseas implementation of the system in the world. In the years since, it has continued to be the backbone system for ANZ Treasury Operations and International Operations and has been installed in 25 countries. Whilst some segments of the software have been replaced with modern technology such as Wall Street the core MIDANZ system still operates in 50 ANZ offices across 18 countries, including Australia, the US and the UK.

Many staff have worked on the system over the years both in IT and Operations. The picture shows the ANZ IT syndicate who had a big win on the Littlewoods Pools in 1984! There are various reunions being organised amongst the former staff in Australia, the UK and Bangalore, who worked on the development, maintenance and implementation of the system around the world. The current support team is based out of

Bangalore and a small team of 4 based in Melbourne, including Russell Clark who originally joined the MIDANZ team in the UK. The picture below was taken at a reunion of current and former UK IT staff on the occasion of Russell?s recent visit to the UK.

The original system development team was based out of London from where the initial systems were implemented in New York and Los Angeles. After the acquisition of Grindlays in 1985, MIDANZ replaced the former Grindlays systems (GAS) in the Corporate and Treasury divisions.

Over the years, MIDANZ has continued to be developed and enhanced to meet the changing business and technology environments both globally and regionally. It?s continued use today bears testament to the success of the systems design and development teams that have worked on the system over the years.

Dear Member, 4th April 2016

I append below copy of a letter (duly updated) which has now been received by all 50/50 Club members. The Club year ended at the end of March and has now been closed after transferring the sum of £961.32 to the ESA itself.

Despite our efforts to find a person willing to continue the club we have been unsuccessful and therefore look to other members of the ESA. If you are able or willing to offer your services in this regard would you please contact me as soon as possible.

With kind regards

David Gowers

President

Administrator of 50/50 Club

LETTER SENT TO ALL 50/50 CLUB MEMBERS (UPDATED)

After giving much thought to the matter I have regretfully and reluctantly decided that, due to my deteriorating eyesight (I am now registered as ?Sight impaired?), I am unable to continue to administrate the Club.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you sincerely on behalf of the Bank?s Ex-Services Association for your valuable membership of the 50/50 Club. Over the past 11 years we have raised nearly £12,000, which has been handed over to the ESA itself for donation to ex-services charities. It would be a great pity if this function of the ESA had to stop now!

We have had no success in finding a replacement administrator of the Club but I ask you to consider volunteering yourself. If you would like to know more please do not hesitate to phone me on 020 8668 4300.

(C) ANNUAL REPORT of the Committee for the year 2015

As required by our Constitution, the Association's primary objective is to encourage contact and communication between, and to encourage social activities for its members. This year has been another very

active and successful one for the Association. This success has been largely due to our team of Regional Liaison Officers, on whom we depend to keep us in close touch with our members. Some of them, where they consider it appropriate, also organise social events in their Areas with RLOs of adjoining areas. Lunches were arranged by RLOs in Harare, Scotland, Haywards Heath, Orpington and Hayes, Guildford, and Kent Area and were all well attended and enjoyed by members and their partners. In addition, a lunch was organised in London for the second time and which was open to all members and their partners. We have Regional Liaison Officers around the country and there are currently vacancies in 10 areas, including 5 in East Anglia, 2 in the South, 2 around London, and 1 in the Midlands.

The Association's Autumn Party was held in the Library at Southwark Cathedral attended by over 60 members and and guests. We were pleased that Mary Bacon, Manager of UK Pensions, was able to give an interesting and positive summary of the Bank's business both in Europe and globally. She also took the opportunity to answer members? questions concerning the pension d(A) epartments activities as well as the wider reforms taking place in the pension industry generally. At the last AGM, Denis Armstrong asked to stand down as Deputy Chairman and this role on the committee remains a vacancy. I am pleased to be re-elected as the Chairman. This meant for the year under review the Committee consisted of Peter Smith (Chairman), Sue Waters (Secretary), Mike Turner (Treasurer) and Committee members, Neil Jones, Lynn Williams Ann Twinn and Tony Twohey with David Phibbs as Honorary Auditor. During the year, Andy Woska has offered to become a committee member and will be formally nominated for election at the 2016 AGM.
