NEW EMERGENCY AID BILL AIMS TO CUT MOST BENEFITS TO

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

A May 14 letter to Congress from Michael Schuttloffel, executive director of the Council for Ameri-can Private Education, expressed "extreme disappointment" with the "unworkable" education pro-visions in the Heroes Act.

The USCCB is a member of the council, which is known as CAPE.

"If passed, these provisions would eliminate from eligibility for aid almost all students enrolled by their parents in private schools," Schuttloffel wrote, adding, "To approve such policies would be to send a message that the House of Representatives is only concerned with the safety of some of America's students and teachers, not all."

The letter raised concern that the HEROES Act education provisions reopens the CARES Act "to re-strict which private school students will be eligible for relief voted on by Congress, and signed by the president, over a month ago." Presentation Sister Dale McDonald, director of public policy and educational research at the Na-tional Catholic Educational Association, said the bill as written would harm nonpublic schools across the country because it "reinterprets" what is emergency aid versus what is traditional education aid.

State Catholic conferences across the country have been alerted to the bill's measures. The confer-ences have joined a nationwide effort to make sure the provisions are dropped from any final bill.

The bill includes $1 trillion for state, city and tribal governments to avoid layoffs; $200 billion for "hazard pay" for front-line workers; a new round of cash payments for individuals and households; $175 billion in housing assistance for rent and mortgage payments; $75 billion for medical testing; a 15% increase in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program; subsidies for laid-off workers to pay for health insurance premiums and maintain COBRA; an employee retention tax credit for businesses; and $25 billion for the U.S. Postal Service.

The House of Representatives passed the bill May 15 largely along party lines.

However, the likelihood of the Republican-controlled Senate taking up the measure as written is slim. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, told reporters at the Capitol there was no "urgency" to act and that consideration of any relief measure by the chamber would not hap-pen until after Memorial Day.

The long-standing equitable services policy has existed since 1965 with passage of various civil rights laws under President Lyndon Johnson's Great Society campaign. It allows federal funding to be sent to states, which then funnels money to local school districts. In turn, the local districts provide equitable services such as English language training or special education based on the needs of the private school. - - - Follow Sadowski on Twitter: @DennisSadowski Copyright (c) Catholic News Service www.CatholicNews.com Reprinted with permission of CNS.

PER THE DIRECTION FROM ARCHBISHOP HEBDA

WE HAVE PUT FORTH DIRECTIONS FOR EACH OF YOU TO FOLLOW

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY THE DIRECTIONS BELOW

1. General Principals

a. Our first consideration must continue to be for the spiritual and physical health of our parishioners and those whom they encounter, especially the most vulnerable; the elderly and those with chronic illness. We

continue to rely on medical professionals and governmental standards to inform these directives.

b. All COVID -19 positive persons, those who are symptomatic, and those living with them, must stay home.

c. Person over the age of 65 and those with preexisting health conditions should continue to stay home during Phase II and avoid public gatherings, including church. We will continue to live stream one of the liturgies

for the benefit of the homebound and those otherwise vulnerable and unable to attend.

d. All faithful should continue to follow hygienic practices at home; wash hands often, avoid touching the face, cover any coughs or sneezes, etc. It is also recommended to use the restrooms at home

before coming to the church.

e. All parishioners must register for a spot in the church via the Parish website. There are LIMITED spots available for each mass including Sunday Masses and once all spots are full on the registration you will need to choose a different time. If you do not have access to a computer to sign up, call Mrs. Roering at

651-894-6141 to reserve a spot for you.

f. Once you have registered for a day and time, you will receive an email confirming your reservation. Once

you get that email, please print that off and bring it with you to the mass you registered to attend.

g. Due to the 6 foot social distancing requirements, seating will only be allowed in the designated pew. You will be asked to wait outside the church doors while an usher will direct you to the seat. Due to limited

seating and spacing, the usher will determine where you sit and you cannot choose any seat you desire.

2. Safety and Hygiene in the Worship Spaces

a. Doors will be propped open to minimize touching and to maximize air circulation.

b. Please make sure you arrive earlier than normal for mass as seating will take longer than normal. Upon

reaching the allowed number of people doors will be closed.

c. Ushers will be available outside and inside to direct parishioners where to go and stand.

Please follow the directions of trained ushers.

d. Only the Main Entrance (E9) from the parking lot will be accessible to enter and exit.

e. Please watch for instructive signs and follow them. These must be adhered to or we will not be able to

hold Mass.

f. Ensure you are following the 6 foot distancing rule while waiting to enter the church.

g. You must sanitize your hands as you enter the Church of St Peter. Please bring your own hand sanitizer, however in case you need it the Church of St Peter provides hand sanitizer in the foyer

of the church at all times.

h. Do not use the bathrooms unless it is an emergency. If it is an emergency ask an usher.

i. Do not congregate in groups inside or outside the church. We must adhere always to the 6 foot

distance rule.

j. We strongly recommend that you come with a face mask (but not for those under age two, according to the CDC, since it may put them at risk of suffocation).

k. No hymnals or other items will be available in the pews. Bulletins will be available after mass on a

table while you exit the building.

l. Congregational singing is to be temporarily discontinued, since singing expels many more respiratory particles than speaking does. Instead, we will have soloists or instrumental music ONLY on Sunday

masses.

m. There will be no holy water in the baptismal font or holy water stoups.

3. Social Distancing within the Church

Distribution of Holy Communion is a delicate topic. We must ensure reverence for the Blessed

Sacrament yet retain social distance.

a. The clergy wearing masks will come to the pew and distribute Communion to each of those wishing to

receive the Blessed Sacrament.

b. Communicants remain in their pews after Mass, where ministers (wearing masks) will bring Communion

to them.

c. Ministers, wearing masks, walk through unoccupied pews and distribute to those in the pew behind.

Recipients will receive Communion kneeling.

d. Distribution of Communion will be in the hand only. When receiving in the hand, the communicant will be kneeling down if possible, then should hold out the hands, placing the left on top of the right. The priest will say “The Body of Christ” and the communicant with mask on still will answer “Amen.” As the priest places the Consecrated Host on your left open palm, you will take off your mask using ONLY the right hand and then receive him, taking care that nothing is lost. Replace your mask on your face

using your right hand. Please watch the video on the church website.

e. Communion hosts will not be available to take from the church or available after mass. Do not try to

leave your pew until excused by an usher in an orderly manner.

f. Collections will not occur during mass. There will be baskets located at the entrance of the church

to drop your contribution in to.

ICON OF THE HOLY FAM ILY

This Icon of the holy family has been created in the traditional form of what is called Neil Romanesque or Romanesque revival. This form is in keeping with the imagery already present in the sanctuary and nave of the church as well as the crucifixion icon present in the holy redeemer chapel. The Romanesque form within the tradition of the church was inspired to maintain the balance between the “human and divine” in visual ritual art. The form and composition helped the faithful to understand that God works within the natural structures of the world in order to reveal a supernatural identity and purpose. The inspiration of this icon Comes from various sources. The icon not only reveals the sanctity of the holy family but also echoes the hierarchical nature of the family. Saint Joseph is imaged as the protector, provider and spiritual leader of the holy family. He holds the flowering staff which is a symbol from the church Tradition that he was the acceptable and the “God willed” suitor to the mother of God. Also note, that the affection shown between Saint Joseph and the mother of God and Jesus is one of a spiritual nature. The face of Saint Joseph and the mother of God express a tenderness to the “halo” of one another. This is a subtle compositional character, challenging the viewer to

perceive the relationship between Saint Joseph and the mother of God and Jesus ad primarily a bond of holiness and divinity, that transcends the natural relationship within a family. The colors in the icon reflect the general overall colors associated with Saint Joseph and the mother of God. Saint Joseph is imaged with a blue tunic and golden mantle. The mother of God is imaged in blue which is the predominant mantle color given to the mother of God in the Western tradition. The youthful Christ is imaged in white which symbolizes his purity and light as the incarnate second person of the holy Trinity. Within the order of the holy family, both Saint Joseph and the mother of God “bow” to Jesus as the Lord of the universe and point to him as Lord and Savior. In other words, their existence and role in the plan of salvation is to reveal Jesus, as the Messiah who is the savior of the world. Nicholas Markell Iconographer

Walking with Christ Pentecost Sunday

“To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” 1 CORINTHIANS 12:7

To receive the gift of the Holy Spirit you must open your heart and invite Him in! Ask the Holy Spirit to guide your thoughts, words and actions every day! Be grateful for all the gifts God has given you! Regardless of our individual circumstances, God has given all of us many blessings. What we do with those gifts is our gift back to God! By generously sharing everything we have and everything we are, we become more “God-centered” and less “self-centered” and our lives truly reflect God’s light, love and mercy.
