PRAYER FOR THE HOLY SPIRIT

Holy Spirit, fan into flame the gifts I received in my Baptism and Confirmation. I want to receive the fire of Your love as Your disciples did at Pentecost. Come with wonder and awe, with wisdom, understanding, and counsel, with courage and faith in You. Holy Spirit, may my actions witness to Your presence in my life. Help me to see the ways my strengths can serve others in their weakness. In all my interactions, I want to radiate love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Breathe new life into the world through me. Amen.

Today we celebrate the "birthday of the Church!" Pentecost is described in the first reading from the Acts of the Apostles. But before the great driving wind and tongues of fire empowering the Disciples, the Holy Spirit had already arrived. The Gospel for today's Mass during the day is from John 20. Jesus appears to the fearful disci-ples after his resurrection. He first speaks a message of calm. "Peace be with you." The apostles "rejoiced when they saw the Lord." When the enthusiastic response settles down, Jesus "breathed on them and said to them 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'" This action is Trinitarian, and it has happened before. If you turn your Bible back to the beginning, you'll read: "The Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so many became a living being" (Genesis 2:7). In the Garden of Eden, we see God's first, original covenant with man. The breath of life signifies that original indwelling of grace, the special state of likeness and friendship with God before the Fall. Here now, in this locked room, the Apostles receive the long-awaited promise: the very breath of God, new life, a new covenant. In the pairing of these two readings--the Pentecost experi-ence in Acts and the breath of Jesus in John's Gospel --we see that the coming of the Holy Spirit is not only an empowering, it is an indwelling. We have each received the breath of grace in our baptism. It is confirmed, strength-ened, and deepened in each reception of the sacraments. If we persevere in virtue, the Spirit of God is alive in us, in-spiring our actions of love. This Pentecost Sunday, how is the breath of God alive in you?

We simulcast our 9am and 11am Sunday Masses to the Parish Hall? It is a convenient place for you to bring your child(ren) and give them space to settle and refocus if needed, while at the same time allow-

ing you to continue to be a part of the Mass.

PARENTS, DID YOU KNOW?

“Let us be protectors of creation.” Pope Francis, 2013

The way we have built homes, streets, offices, and shop-ping malls in recent decades has significantly reduced the habitat for native animals and birds. A special concern is the decline of pollinators (birds, bees, butterflies, among others) that ensure that plants are productive and protect our food supply. Here are some steps you can take to help preserve these crucial contributors to God’s creation:

• Use pollinator-friendly plants in your landscape. Shrubs and trees such as dogwood, blueberry, cherry, plum, willow, and poplar provide pollen or nectar, or both, early in spring when food is scarce.

• Choose a mixture of plants for spring, summer, and fall. Different flower colors, shapes, and scents will attract a wide variety of pollinators. If you have limited space, you can plant flowers in containers.

• Reduce or eliminate the use of pesticides in your gar-den. Incorporate plants that attract beneficial insects for pest control.

• Accept some damage on plants that are meant to pro-vide habitat for butterfly or moth larvae.

• Provide clean water for pollinators in a shallow con-tainer or birdbath, with half-submerged stones for perches. Make sure you change the water every few days to avoid mosquitoes.

• Put up bird houses in your yard.

• Support land conservation in your community by help-ing to create and maintain community gardens and green spaces.

The suggestions above are adapted from material prepared by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and distrib-uted by the Archdiocese of Washington. MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER

It is with great joy that we congratulate the St. Peter School Confirmandi whom received the sacrament of Confirmation on May 12! As they continue their journey with Jesus that began at baptism, we pray they live more fully in the Father's love through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

On Friday May 18, St. Peter student families competed against each other at Providence Park for Field Day - the most anticipated day of the year! Each student family is assigned a color and wins points as they rotate through various games and relays such as the obstacle course, con-tinuous kickball, the wacky water plunger relay, storm the castle and a team work relay. The teams enjoyed a barbe-que lunch prepared by SPS parents. After lunch, there was a tug-of-war championship showdown and the day com-menced with the annual Grade 8 vs. teachers competition, which was flag football this year. A grand time was had by all!
