THE DAY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

John’s Gospel tells us that when Jesus “breathed” on the disciples, the Holy Spirit came into them, empowering them to forgive sins and to gather all people into union with one another. The book of Genesis had explained the divisions among nations with the story of the Tower of Babel. In rebellious pride, human beings had struggled to become equal to God. The result was chaos, strife, the inability even to speak the same language among themselves. Today’s reading from Acts tells how the Spirit has just the opposite effect. Strangers from many nations hear and understand one another, each in his or her own tongue. This message of unity in the Spirit is repeated in the reading from Corinthians. There are many gifts, many ways to serve. One way is not “higher,” nor one person “better” than another. There is but one Spirit, who accomplishes all the different works we do, acting through us. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Today we are at the fiftieth day of the Easter celebration: seven weeks of seven days, a week of weeks, now culminating in a festival fiftieth day. While the liturgical color of the Easter season is gold, on this last day we have red. For the first thousand years of the church, there were no firm rules for using colors. Only wealthy churches could afford a full array of colors, and most places used the best vestments, no matter the color, for the greatest feasts. The Church spelled out an exact plan for color, including red for Pentecost, only in 1570, but local differences held on until the 1800s. Color experts tell us that red is a hot color, best used for fast-paced, upbeat, active experiences. It is hard to be neutral before red, as any matador will tell you. It invites commitment, draws you in. It is a stimulating color, engaging the eye, stirring hunger. It is the most fitting color for this day when we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit into our lives, a dynamic presence overturning neutrality in favor of passion and commitment.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. DO YOU WANT TO READ THE BIBLE, BUT DON’T KNOW HOW TO BEGIN? - If you have ever wanted to read the Bible, but did not know where or how to begin, then The Bible Timeline Parish Study is for you. The Bible Timeline makes reading the Bible not only easy, but exciting. In this study, you will learn the major people, places, events and themes of the Bible—getting the “big picture” of salvation history. Perhaps for the first time in your life, you will understand the overview of the Bible story. This then makes your Bible reading and even the Sun-day Mass readings come alive like never before. The Bible Timeline will be offered at Madonna del Sasso Parish in the Student Activity Center every Thursday. Beginning at 6:30 pm, there will be a study/

workbook session. The video will begin at 7:00 pm and from 8:00 to 8:30 pm there will be a short pres-entation and an opportunity for questions. This series will be pre-sented by Fr. Greg Sandman, Fr. Joey Buena and Fr. Joshua Clifton. To learn more, visit www.mdschurch.org or call the Madonna del Sasso Parish office at 422-5323.

CREATING HOPE—Sandra is struggling to get by on her low paying job – she has three small children and the oldest, Peter, has developed serious childhood asthma. He panics when he can’t breathe and she has to be sure he always has his inhaler with him. His medications are expensive and he has lost his inhaler at school twice. Sandra had to leave work and go back to the pharmacy for new ones. The two little boys are twins and started school this year. She recently received notice that her utilities would be shut off and she is afraid her boss will let her go if she misses any more work to meet with the utility company. She is always afraid she will run out of money for food and rent. If only she could get a little financial help the stress would be less in her life.

A Catholic Charities resource specialist listened carefully to her story and assisted with the utility bills. They also helped Sandra create a new family budget and qualify for CalFresh to buy nutritious food for her family to ease her financial anxiety.

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Monterey serves 20,000 individuals and families every year and, with your support, could give direct assistance to more families like Sandra’s. Please remember the Catholic Charities Annual Appeal this weekend.

Faith Formation...

Reflecting on God’s Word In the Middle Ages, when science seemed to be stepsister to the arts, people thought that phlogiston was what made something burnable. The more phlogiston, the more readily flammable was the way they understood physics’ inner workings. It explained why rocks did not burn and why straw readily did. Though phlogiston has long been shelved, its theory is not so far removed from how the Spirit of God burns in our lives, nor is it far from the gifts that God’s Spirit sets aflame in us. If some effort of ours glows with light and heat, it may be a sign of much Spirit, sort of like phlogiston. On the other hand, if in our effort to shine there’s not even a spark, it’s quite likely that that is not where the Spirit has settled into us. It might be better to pay attention then to some other aspect of life. The struggle is to make sure that our imagined passion and where the Spirit of God wants us to be are one and the same so that the former does not cause us to stray from the latter. How does anyone know if they are where they should be? St. Paul says that the Spirit gives each of us our own dose of divine gifted-ness, our own spark with which to shine, but it’s not given to us for our own glory or fun or feel-good self-image but for the good of others, for the com-munity, for building up life. John’s Gospel suggests one other such test—whether or not we’re at peace. That, too, is the Spirit’s gift. —Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis Copyright © 2012,

THANK YOU – 2013 AMA (ANNUAL MINISTRIES APPEAL) DONORS! We can do a lot when we work together. We can do a lot when we put our hands, our minds, and our hearts together. We can do a lot as a parish and as a diocese when we put our resources together to support programs that benefit us all. Our on-going practice of Stewardship is a wonderful thanksgiving to God’s many blessings. The AMA funds go toward such worthwhile programs in our diocese as Catholic Schools, Hispanic Ministries, Respect Life, training of seminarians, and numerous other vital ministries. “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be,” was the theme Bishop Garcia chose for this year’s appeal. And as in the past, our good-hearted community has always sup-ported the Bishop’s campaign with great generosity --- over $50,875.08 was pledged in the 2013 appeal! Our diocesan goal was $40,300. All monies received over our responsibility to the diocese are returned to the parish. Sacred Heart is blessed to have parishioners who prayerfully give to this mission.

We apologize if there are any omissions to this list. Please contact Arlala in the parish office (424-1959 or [email protected]) and we’ll make a correction in the next bulletin.

Trabajando juntos podemos hacer mucho.

SACRED HEART INTENTION CALENDAR—The Sacred Heart calendar has room to make your special intentions for June & July Masses. Please contact the Parish office for more info

As the weather gets warmer and our guests need fewer blankets, I have to pause to thank God that we've survived another winter, and that's because of your generosity! Thank you for a wonderful holiday season and for supporting us as we gain in capacity to serve the poor here at Dorothy's Place. Today I see one of our House of Peace residents happily tending her many neighborhood cats, a far cry from how I knew her five years ago, strung out on cocaine and heroin. I see two more residents working so hard to clean up the street-scape in preparation for the Asian Festival this weekend. But I also see one of our very troubled Women Alive guests, slumped over on the curb, unable to move and with no friends to help her. I paused to bring out a bench for her to sit on and a cup of hot chocolate, but it's not enough. I write today to ask you once again to support the poor and homeless through Dorothy's Place. Springtime brings good weather and less desperation, but it's also the time of year that we run low on dollars - waiting for our grant funding to kick in. We're running very lean right now and would sure appreciate it if you could send some dollars our way. We promise to spend it wisely, knowing that we are simply stewards of your intentions to serve the most disenfranchised people in our community. We're happy to receive your check, or if you prefer to donate online with a credit card (or PayPal), please go to http://dorothysplace.org/donate. For more info, please contact Jill at (831) 578-4198.
