Crypt Crypt Chapel STV St. Vincent de Paul Parish Church SS - 55 Seel St, Missionaries of Charity RLUH - Royal Liverpool University Hospital CLERGY: PRIESTS: Canon Anthony O’Brien Dean Mgr Peter Cookson Fr Gerard Callacher Fr Liam Collister DEACONS: Rev Noel Abbott Rev Paul Mannings We conclude the Season of Easter with the Celebration of the Feast of Pentecost this weekend. Pentecost is not only for us a commemoration of the Descent of the Holy Spirit and a Celebration of the birth of the Church but also the Anniversary of the opening of our Cathedral 48 years ago. Underpinning all the events taking place this weekend we rejoice and give thanks to God for all the blessings we have received through the life of our Cathedral. At the Solemn Mass this Sunday Archbishop Malcolm will confirm young children from both St Vincent’s and St Nicholas’ primary schools along with a number of children from the choir and parish as well as a few adults. The young children will also be making their First Holy Communion at this Mass. It couldn’t be a more appropriate day for us to celebrate these Sacraments and I hope it will be a very memorable occasion for all who receive either one or both Sacraments. On Sunday afternoon most of the Church Leaders on Merseyside will join us for Choral Evening Prayer on the 30 th Anniversary of the signing of the Covenant agreement between the various Christian Denominations within our region. Thirty years ago Archbishop Worlock, Bishop David Sheppard, Trevor Hubbard and others signed to say that ‘they would seek to do everything together, to give expression to the common faith, baptism and devotion of Christians, except that which in conscience must be done separately’. This Sunday afternoon we will give thanks for the years of joint witness, partnership and co-operation between the churches and the current Bishops and Denominational Presidents, most of whom are relatively new in post, and who will renew that covenant commitment. With the passage of time most people wouldn’t appreciate how significant and groundbreaking a moment this was thirty years ago. The Bank Holiday sees the arrival of the three Cunard Liners to the Port of Liverpool. The Queen Mary will sail into the Mersey on Sunday and berth at the Pier Head and then the Queens Elizabeth and Victoria will arrive on Monday. Cunard had their offices and headquarters here in Liverpool for over 120 years until 1967 and the festival of the three ships is an appreciation of the role of the city in the history of the company and development as they mark their 175 th anniversary. I am always amazed at how these liners, that are so high above the water level, manage to float and stay upright – being a landlubber I prefer to admire these great ships for the quayside rather than sail on them. I hope the celebrations on the waterfront over the next few days are a great success. NB Mass on Bank Holiday Monday will be at 10am and the 12.15 masses during the week will be celebrated in the Cathedral Blessed Sacrament Chapel due to exams taking place in the Crypt. Canon Anthony O’Brien Dean ADVANCE NOTICE Please note that from Tuesday 26 May to Friday 29 May and Monday 1 June – Friday 5 June the 12.15pm Mass will take place in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel and not the Crypt. ST VINCENT’S LOTTERY NUMBERS For week commencing 16 May. Winning numbers are 1, 2, 7, 9, 13 and 14. Prize was £350. There were no winners. Next week the prize money will be £400.

ST NICHOLAS’ SCHOOL So another half term comes to an end (the year is whizzing by). Our Year 2s had their SATs this week and the children worked hard to show what they had learnt over the year. Our junior children also had their end of year tests, so school was quiet for most of the week…except for Wednesday! Miss Bell arranged a day full of activities to raise money for Breast Cancer, a disease that has affected many people the staff and children know. There was a ‘pink’ theme to the day that included dancing, cake sales, bunting, guessing the name of Teddy as well as dressing in pink for the day! The final count was still being taken at the time of writing so, hopefully, we should have a total for next week’s news. This weekend, our With You Always children will finally celebrate their Confirmation and First Holy Communion at the 11am Mass on Sunday. It has been an absolute pleasure to support our Parish and school children, and their families, again this year. We have all learnt from each other and I know I speak for Father Ged and Deacon Paul in wishing them all a truly memorable family day and hope the weather is kind too! HOPE+ NEWS During our pantries in Holy Week, Hope+ provided its 15,000 food hamper (as well as toiletries, clothes, advice, and care); at our Ascension Day pantry at St Bride’s, we provided our 16,ooo hamper. At the current rate of need, we will have provided our 20,000 before the end of August. The purpose behind our Pharaoh’s Dream campaign is to fill all the shelves of our new store before the “summer rush”. Unfortunately, the “summer rush” appears to have started early. This week we have provided food for over two hundred people. We were so busy at our St Bride’s Pantry on 21st May, that Scipio the van had to be deployed to collect more food from the new store. So as fast as we fill our shelves, we are emptying them again. We have had some very generous donations already, but we continue to need more. We are very grateful for any donation that you can help us with; at present we are desperately short of tinned fish, pasta & curry sauces, and biscuits. Biscuits are not an essential, but it is good to be able to offer a treat alongside the bare necessities. We are also always in need of basic toiletries such a soap, shampoo, and toothpaste. For further information please contact [email protected] CATHOLIC CONFERENCE The Northern Catholic Conference, the theme is, 'You did not choose I chose you.' This annual Catholic Conference is

taking place at Liverpool Hope University, June 12-14th this year. The weekend is centred on faith, Mass and speakers including, Dana, Fr.Pat Deegan, Fr.Richard Reid CSsR, Frances Hogan and others. Archbishop Malcolm McMahon will celebrate Mass on Saturday 13th June. So why not come and join others celebrating our faith over a wonderful weekend of talks, praise and friendship. More information can be found on our website www.northerncatholic.co.uk
