Fr. Rich Jakubik

What words would you use to describe your current experience of God? Growing? Frustrated? Disappointing? Fulfi lled? For-given? Stuck? Struggling? Joyful? Defeated? Exciting? Up and down? Empty? Discour-aged? Dutiful? Intimate? Mediocre? Painful? Dynamic? Guilty? Vital? So-so? When have you had moments where you sensed the divine presence – that God was near, or in your heart? Have you prayed for guidance and felt you received it? Or have you had spiritual experiences of a diff erent kind? Sometimes it’s hard to recognize whether or not we are “expe-riencing” God or simply enjoying the music in a liturgy, or that the scenery in church is beauti-ful, or that we are surrounded by the community of faith at Holy Family Parish. Perhaps it is just a joy and appreciation of living that we are experiencing. I expect that each of us, in our own unique and mysterious way, will not be able the express or understand fully an experience of God. This weekend we are celebrating the Feast of Pentecost. Pentecost is a celebration of God’s love and presence, given to all humanity, that ushers in a new beginning, a new day, a new creation, a new life. Pentecost is the fulfi llment of God’s love with and for all humanity. The breath of God is not simply a thing or an event. It is the abiding and transforming presence of God’s life with us and in us. Wherever life is being created, renewed, put back together, or in-spired, the Holy Spirit is present. God is breath-ing into each one of us a life of love and self-giv-ing, forgiveness and reconciliation, generosityand compassion, healing and wholeness, prayer and holiness. The experience of Pente-cost is that God breathes and fi lls hearts, souls, minds, and bodies with his own spirit and life. God breathes and his extraordinary power fi lls and works in common ordinary people, like you and me, in common ordinary ways, transforming us. God breathes and we have newness of life. This weekend’s scriptures recall the story of the disciples gathered in the upper room. The dis-ciples hear a sound like the rush of violent wind fi lling the room. They see divided tongues, as of fi re, appearing and resting on each of them. The disciples speak, hear and understand strange

new languages. I suspect many, if not most, of us wish for such an experience of God like that every once in a while. We need a tangible sign, a sound, a vision, that reveals God’s pres-ence, that guides us in our life, that reassuresus. Today’s feast means that we are all “spirited”by the wind, the breath and the life of God. This “spiriting” is what sustains and renews our lives and our world. God breathes out and we breathe in. We breathe out and God breathes in. Back and forth it fl ows. God and humanity share the di-vine fl ow, the breath of life. Take a deep breath; it is Pentecost. Let the breath out; it is Pentecost. Now do it again. It is Pentecost! Pentecost is a real thing. The outpouring of the Holy Spirit wasn’t just for the Apostles. We are all meant to receive the Holy Spirit. We are all meant to know God, walk with God and receive the graces we need for our daily lives from Him. The divine presence can be experienced while observing a tree as its leaves are touched by the wind. It may be seen in the eyes of some-one in need; in any anonymous action of self-less love and generosity; or in the joy of a dog wagging its tail as a way of expressing friendly feelings. It is also in the brightness of stars in the sky. It enables each us to love and awakensin us a natural need to have respect for truth and justice. The divine presence is the center of peace in our hearts. It constitutes the source of inspiration for us to build a community of love and fellowship. May the silence and Presence of God bring us all newness of life. Imagine, right now, that you are standing be-fore a divine presence. What would you think, if you knew that a great spiritual intelligence, of infi nite wisdom, is at your side? What would your attitude be if you perceived that a holy and wise being, a teacher of mankind, observes in this exact moment your emotions and thoughts? Would you feel ashamed? Would you be proud, or overwhelmed by emotion? Calm or anxious? May each of us remember that we are always in the presence of the divine love. Our spiritual journey is then about the central challenge to consciously perceive and live in presence of the divine love at each moment of our lives.

What Is Your Experience of God?

Preparing for Next Week...We invite you to read the scripture readings for June 7 (The Most Holy Trinity)

and then refl ect on these questions:1. How has God been merciful to you when you were stiff -necked?

2. Paul tells us that how we interact with others determines how the Saints will greet us. How can we improve our daily interactions with others?

3. Which seems the hardest for you to do; ● Mend your ways, ● Encourage one another, ● Agree with one another, ● Live in peace, or… __________?

4. One of the most signifi cant passages in Scripture is: “God so loved the world that he gave his only Son.” Does this passage help you grasp the enormity of God’s love? In what way?

5. The concept of the Trinity is at the core of our faith. How do you explain it to yourself or to someone who may be struggling with the concept?

SOCIAL JUSTICEThe Trinity is an expression of God as community, living in peace with one another. How do you respond to social sin such as materialism, consumerism, etc. that is self-seeking versus unifying?

Holy Spirit and Seat of WisdomA Prayer by John Paul II

Holy Spirit and Seat of Wisdom, help us in the great en-deavor that we are carrying out to meet on a more and more mature way our brothers and sisters in the faith.

Through all the means of knowledge, of mutual respect, of love, may we be able to rediscover gradually the divine plan. Teach us constantly the ways that lead to unity. Help us all to proclaim Christ and reveal the power of God and the wisdom of God hidden in His Cross. How greatly I de-sire to entrust to You all the diffi cult problems of the societ-ies, systems, and states--problems that cannot be solved with hatred, war, and self-destruction, but only by peace, justice, and respect for the rights of people and nations.

Amen.

Re-Opening Process The last time we were together in church was 10 weeks ago, and we are all anxious to return to our Holy Family home. We have recently received informa-tion regarding Phase 1 and Phase 1A of re-opening the Church. Phase 1 allows for Sacramental events, i.e. Baptisms, Weddings, Funerals and Reconciliation. Phase 1A allows for adoration and private prayer. A certifi cation process is re-quired for the re-opening of these phases. We have reviewed the guidelines, cre-ated the required teams, and are now in the process of creating and establishing the necessary protocols to comply and receive certifi cation for Phase 1 reopening. At this time we do not have a re-opening date, however, we will continue to com-municate our progress and plans. While the church has been closed, our maintenance staff has been not only monitoring our facility, but also cleaning, sanitizing and preparing for our return. The most recent projects completed have been very large in scale. For the fi rst time in many, many years the gym ceiling has been cleaned, and it was no small feat. The fl oor covering the Baptismal Font has been refi nished and they are cur-rently power washing the stone façade of the church. Our truly talented and gifted maintenance staff has found new ways to ap-proach many of their daily routines, organize storage spaces and discard useless items, and will soon be painting curbs. HOORAY for our maintenance staff ! If you happen to see a maintenance person now, or when you return to the campus, please give them a thank you. We couldn’t do it without them!

The Human Concerns Community...off ers assistance with life’s basic needs, spiritual and emotional support as well as additional resources with partners in our community while promoting mercy and justice by putting our faith into action.

Catholic Social TeachingWhy CST needs to be practiced more than ever!

You could say Catholic social teaching (CST) has been the foundation of our faith since the inception of Christianity, as Jesus Christ lived and preached loving your neighbor and concern for the poor and outcast. However, CST began to be articulated when Pope Leo XIII wrote the famous 1891 encyclical, Rerum Novar-um, which advocated for worker’s rights and responsibilities during the Industrial Revolution. The world was very diff erent in Jesus’ time as well as in the 1890’s. But, is it really so diff erent? In the coming weeks, I will refl ect on one of the seven main CST’s in our cur-rent environment. But, fi rst, let’s hear what the United States Catholic Confer-ence of Bishops (USCCB) have to say about CST. We must fully embrace and practice CST now more than ever. The USCCB states: “Catholic social teaching is a central and essential ele-ment of our faith. Its roots are in the Hebrew prophets who announced God's spe-cial love for the poor and called God's people to a covenant of love and justice. It is a teaching founded on the life and words of Jesus Christ, who came "to bring glad tidings to the poor . . . liberty to captives . . . recovery of sight to the blind"(Lk 4:18-19), and who identifi ed himself with "the least of these," the hungry and the stranger (cf. Mt 25:45). Catholic social teaching is built on a commitment to the poor. This commitment arises from our experiences of Christ in the eucharist. Catholic social teaching emerges from the truth of what God has revealed to us about himself. We believe in the triune God whose very nature is communal and social. God the Father sends his only Son Jesus Christ and shares the Holy Spirit as his gift of love. God reveals himself to us as one who is not alone, but rather as one who is relational, one who is Trinity. Therefore, we who are made in God's image share this communal, social nature. We are called to reach out and to build relationships of love and justice. Catholic social teaching is based on and inseparable from our understand-ing of human life and human dignity. Every human being is created in the image of God and redeemed by Jesus Christ, and therefore is invaluable and worthy of respect as a member of the human family. Every person, from the moment of conception to natural death, has inherent dignity and a right to life consistent with that dignity. Human dignity comes from God, not from any human quality or ac-complishment. Our commitment to the Catholic social mission must be rooted in and strengthened by our spiritual lives. In our relationship with God we experience the conversion of heart that is necessary to truly love one another as God has loved us.” Cardinal Cupich recently wrote on the eff ects of the COVID-19 pandemic: “It is not that we are spared all grief, but rather, we approach our losses with a new set of eyes, seeing how even losses can be made holy and take on a new meaning in Christ. Jesus not only accompanies us in our sorrow, he makes something new out of it.” During these trying times, let us remain focused with a new set of eyes, while keeping CST in our hearts. This virus does not discriminate, so as a people of faith, we must keep the common good in mind and consider not only our own wellbeing, but the wellbeing of our neighbor, no matter where they live. We truly are “all in this together”.
