Calling All Green Thumbs!!

We are hoping to divide and conquer the landscaping

job of the parish grounds. This will give lots of oppor-

tunity for organizations, families, friends, classes, etc. to

take care of a smaller area and keep it beautiful through

out the growing season. We have divided the grounds

into sections:

1. Front of church, pieta shrine, east side of rectory and

the front left of the rectory (could be split more)

2. Front right and side of rectory, St. Isadore shrine

3. Behind school by the Quilting room *TAKEN*

4. In front of the Parish Center *TAKEN*

This would include weeding, planting, watering, mulch-

ing and fall clean-up of your area. To sign up for one of

these spots call the rectory 636-583-2488.

Only 2 spots left!!

SICK IN THE PARISH: Vernon Br inker , Debbie O’Malley,

Andy Tobben, Bob Hayden Sr., Willie Kessler, Rosie Spaunhorst,

Allen Gephardt, Rich Skiljan. We ask the Lord to bless all those

who are sick or injured in our community, those who are in a nurs-

ing home, and those homebound.

HOMEBOUND/SHUT-IN: Please keep in mind if you or some-

one you know is convalescing or returning from the hospital and

would like Communion at home, please call the rectory.

PRAYER CHAIN: Don’t forget to get help from our Prayer

Chain. It’s been around for a while now, so it’s easy to take it for

granted and overlook the POWER of united prayer. When you

have a pressing need, please don’t forget to make use of this re-

source of people who care and want to be there in prayer with you.

Call Laverne Schwoeppe at 636-742-5754 or 636-288-6382. She

will get the Prayer Chain members to pray with you. You do not

have to be a member of this Prayer Chain to make a prayer request.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Happy Pentecost! Today our one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church is 1,988 years old! Happy Birthday to you, me, and all of

us. Our parish will be able to celebrate Pentecost for the 181st time, and although we have yet to officially break ground on the church ad-

dition project, it will be a blessing to celebrate this great day in the tradition of our forebears.

Congratulations are in order for our kindergartners and 8th graders! May your future be joyful and fueled by the wisdom of Christ

and your teachers from St. John’s! We also thank and wish the best to our departing teachers and cook. Thank you to Mrs. Brueggemann

(8th grade), Mrs. Casey (7th grade), and Ms. Hanratty (6th grade), and Mrs. Dowil (kitchen)….your attitude of joy and enthusiasm have set a

high standard!!

There is quite a lot going on…..in order of appearance…The Legion of Mary is organizing a pilgrimage today (5/23) to the Black

Madonna Shrine in Eureka. The group will leave the church parking lot at 12 pm and caravan there. This site features artistic stonework

from locally quarried stone done by a Polish Franciscan monk over a period of decades beginning in 1938. The original Black Madonna

resides in Poland and is the most famous and recognizable Polish treasure. According to legend, St. Luke the Evangelist painted the image

upon cedar wood taken from a table built by either St. Joseph or Christ that the Holy Family had used in its home. St. Helena reportedly

found it in the fourth century and brought it back to her son, Constantine. It has survived countless wars and intrigues, and a couple of dif-

ferent copies of it are kept at this shrine.

We pray for the souls of all the faithful departed, but Memorial Day calls to our attention all of the souls of the men and women

who have died serving our country in the armed forces. Please pray for all of these souls and the families of all those who have passed in

living memory. Such an occasion is a unique opportunity for our whole country to reflect on what their sacrifice has meant. They have

preserved our freedom and heritage for all of our nation’s citizens on both sides of the aisle. May we all remember to love and pray for our

country in its entirety even when divisions are at such a fever pitch. The question of how do we pray for those who do not honor our flag,

our veterans, our history, etc. is understandable. I look at it in family terms – if some member of the family wants to do harm to themselves

or to the family in general – we certainly do everything within reason to prevent this, but they are still our family. God, help us all to unite

in the Name of Your Son, indivisible, with justice for all.

Memorial Day happens to fall on another great feast of the church: the Visitation—Mary’s trip to assist her cousin, Elizabeth

(pregnant with John the Baptist, our namesake). The Legion of Mary is sponsoring a 3.8 mile walk on the Katy Trail in honor of this feast

and in keeping with the pope’s desire that we pray and visit shrines for the global end to the pandemic. We will meet at the Dutzow trail-

head at 9:30 am on May 31st. While the virus has subsided greatly here, it is still raging out of control in India where they have lost over

4,000 people a day….160 catholic priests to COVID in the last 5 weeks alone. God, if it be Your Will, heal us entirely.

On a lighter note, the German Games are going to be held June 11 and 12th. To view the games it is recommended to bring a lawn

chair, an alpine horn (which may be purchased on site if unavailable to you presently), and a few dollars to enjoy the greatest sausages and

brats that Williams Brothers can shovel our direction. Beverages will of course greatly assist in the digestive aspect to our celebration!

Come and cheer on our area’s boldest men and women in the numerous spectacles of grit and determination…..or form a team and match

your own vigor and brawn in our sporting fun! Visit Germangames.org for more on how to get involved.

Also on the upcoming calendar at our parish is a first ever St. John’s Event: Vacation Bible School! Children from kindergarten

through fifth grade will learn “The Marvelous Mystery” at the Parish Center from June 21 – June 25 (5:45 pm – 8:15 pm). Registration for

the youth and for volunteers is at sjg-parish.org.

Happy 1,988th Birthday to all of us and may God bless you and be your Strength,

Father Foy
