Live stock Se cu rity: It Af fects Us AllBy John Salazar

When peo ple go shop -ping for food on their din -ner ta ble, they may con -sider its nu tri tious valueand its cost, but manydon’t con sider the farmerand rancher be hind ev ery piece of food on theirplate. For ev ery bite youtake, the ag ri cul turalcom mu nity strives to pro -vide a healthy, abun dantfood sup ply. But, let’s digeven deeper and on aglobal security level.

In a world that cansome times seem un sta -ble and hos tile, it has be -come even more crit i calthat we look at ar eas thatcould be ex posed to in ten -tional acts of ter ror ismand live stock health rateshigh on that list for theCol o rado De part ment ofAgriculture.

While we fo cus on theday to day health andwell-be ing of live stock, we must also be aware thatagro-ter ror ism is a rea -son able threat. It is vi talthat we pre pare for se ri -ous in ci dents that couldpo ten tially dev as tate ourlive stock in dus try. Thisin cludes an in ten tionalact of ter ror ism or an un -

in ten tional in tro duc tionof a for eign an i mal dis -ease through the spreadof a microbial agent.

Why is this im por tant? The ag ri cul tural com mu -nity plays a tre men dousrole in our way of life in -clud ing our food and oureconomy.

In Col o rado, ag ri cul ture rep re sents an im por tantcom po nent of our state’sover all eco nomic health.Ag ri cul ture gen er atesover $40 bil lion in eco -nomic ac tiv ity, sup portsover 170,000 jobs acrossour state, and con trib utes $2 bil lion in exportsannually.

An i mal ag ri cul ture is akey part of that ef fort. In2013, live stock and live -stock prod ucts ac counted for over 65 per cent of allfarm re ceipts in Col o -rado, with cash re ceiptsfor cat tle and calves ex -pected to reach a re cordhigh of $3.7 bil lion in 2014.Col o rado ranks 10th na -tion ally for cat tle andcalves pro duc tion, 2nd for sheep and lambs, 3rd forwool pro duc tion, and 5thfor cattle that are on feed.

We have cat tle andcalves in vir tu ally ev ery

county of the state. Dairycows are in creas ing innum bers, par tic u larly inthe north ern and east ernparts of Col o rado, withthe dairy in dus try’s eco -nomic im pact grow ingdaily. Hogs and pigs andsheep and lambs all con -trib ute to the health ofCol o rado’s an i mal in dus -try in important ways.

It has been es ti matedthat on any given day inCol o rado there are 50,000head of cat tle “onwheels.” That is the“norm” for an i mal ag ri -cul ture in many otherstates too. The U.S. porkin dus try es ti mates thatthere are over 600,000head of swine be ing trans -ported each and ev eryday in the U.S.

Move ment of live stockin the U.S. not only in -creases our vul ner a bil ityto a for eign an i mal dis -ease but also com pli catesour live stock emer gencyre sponse ef forts yet if thelive stock in dus try has ex -ces sive re stric tionsplaced on its move ment, the re stric tions couldcon trib ute to a very largeeco nomic loss during adisease outbreak.

As you can see, if thereis a break down in Col o -rado’s live stock in dus try,it could cre ate prob lemswithin our food sys tem, econ omy, and trans por ta -tion.

As your ag ri cul turalarm of the State, we fo cusour ef forts on pro tect ingour live stock in dus trythrough plan ning andtrain ing for live stockemer gency incidents.

As a state, we have to bepre pared to re spond tosuch a risk. It is crit i cal

that we un der stand thatre spond ing to an emer -gency, whether it be a ter -ror ism in ci dent or a dis -ease out break, man ag ingit and con trol ling it will re -quire a con certed ef fortacross mul ti ple agen ciesin volv ing many ded i catedpeo ple. It will re quire col -lab o ra tion, com mu ni ca -tion, and team work be -tween the states, fed eralen ti ties, and the live stockin dus try.

Wild Horse Roundup

By Curtis Schrimp

This Week’sI found an old bill to Oslo

Golberg (Leona‘s dad; mywife). It was from the KitCar son Her ald in 1916.

I also found a money or der from Sor ren to in 1910.Kinda old. I did n’t knowwhere I put them and foundthem in an al bum.

LeeAnn and I went out tothe Naugles’ to see him feed the cows and visit. Babycalves are fun to watch run.The Naugles came and took us out south to nearKellers’. The dirt in thefences is the most I haveseen since the old dayswhen the dirt storms werehere and bur ied the fences.

Tony Ham mer stopped inFri day and we had a nicevisit.

LeeAnn has been go ingdown to the ranch do ingsome clean ing and emp ty -ing the mouse traps. Ourdog Rusty loves to go alongand get out and run.

This will be a lone someold man af ter Mon day when LeeAnn heads back to Nor -way.

On Fri day, Nor man andWanda Olsen, Alan andLuanna Naugle, andLeeAnn cleaned the churchof all the dirt that has blown in. We are plan ning on hav -ing church to mor row,Sunday.

Sat ur day eve ning BevMiddle ton came for a visit.

She and LeeAnn had a great visit look ing at fam ily pic -tures and catch ing up onthe past year. Bev al waystakes the time to come for avisit ev ery time LeeAnn co -mes home.

I thought of some thingthat hap pened when I was a kid. I would go across thestreet to walk to school with my friends. When I gotthere, their mother wouldgrab me by the ear and say,“Did you wash be hind yourears?” What a mem ory.

We had church to day andour usual five were there, plus one - LeeAnn. We went to the school house for anice lunch and good vis it -ing.

The card party was verysmall- one ta ble of five.Maybe June will bring niceweather.

Last Week’sSunday - Steve and Deb,

my son and daugh -

The flow ersthat have been there a longtime have n’t blown awayyet. It sure needs some rain. We are look ing at somephoto al bums and they arevery in ter est ing.

Last Tues day LeeAnn took me to Den ver to a hos pi talwhere I got a shot in my hip. It has n’t helped much as itstill hurts. They said itwould take a while but it’sbeen a while.

LeeAnn has sure beenbusy clean ing my floors, wash ing win dows and fix ing a bed for Steve and Debback in the trailer. Steveand Deb also worked hardtoo. They went to the ranchand done a lit tle work.

Allen and Luanna Nauglestopped on their way tochurch in Kit Car son. Theway my leg hurts and I can’t hear, so I stayed home.
