I am Patricia Woolgar, Chair of Trustees at St Barnabas House. I hope you are reading this guide because you are considering leaving a gift in your Will to St Barnabas House; I know only too well how crucial these gifts are to our hospice service.

St Barnabas House was one of the early pioneers of the hospice movement and has been providing hospice care for local people and their families for over 45 years. Gifts in Wills have played a significant role in funding the hospice even before it first opened. In 1969, we received a £10,000 gift which contributed towards the original build costs.

However, the hospice care provided by St Barnabas House is about far more than just a building. The services we provide both at the hospice and out in the local community reach the lives of thousands of local people and their families each year. The hospice provides unique, compassionate care that enables people to live their lives as fully as possible, even when their illness cannot be cured.

With your support we can ensure patients and their families are

able to access palliative and end of life care that they need at such a vital time.

Since its inception, St Barnabas House has been an independent local charity. Our most important source of income by a considerable way is the support and donations we receive from individuals – and gifts in Wills contribute the most.

In fact, the care costs of 1 in every 4 people we support are completely funded by gifts in Wills.

Thank you for giving careful consideration to what I know is a hugely important choice for you and your family. Please read on and see how a bold, thoughtful decision from you today could secure dedicated, compassionate hospice care for local people and their families for years to come.

With best wishes, Patricia Woolgar Chair of Trustees St Barnabas House

A Will is a really important document, helping ensure your savings and possessions go to the people and causes you care about. If you are preparing your Will for the first time, we recommend you use a solicitor to help with the process. A professional adviser will ensure that your estate is distributed as you would wish. They will also ensure you have minimised your taxable contribution, leaving more for family, friends and good causes.

It is also an opportunity to consider issues such as Power of Attorney. Changes to family circumstances, for example births and deaths, may mean you need to make changes to your Will. Again, a solicitor will be able to advise on this process. If you do wish to consider leaving a gift to St Barnabas House in your Will, no matter how small, it will mean we can continue to help many more patients and their families for years to come.

“My mother died at St Barnabas House. She

had made many donations to the hospice, while alive, and in her Will requested that £2,000 be given to

your charity. I will a lways be grateful for what you were able to do for my mother

and me in her last hours.”

Deciding to leave a gift in your Will to St Barnabas HouseWe fully appreciate that there are many things to think about when deciding to leave a gift in your Will to St Barnabas House. You may feel that once you have made provision for the people you love, there will be nothing left of value. However, by leaving even a small percentage of your remaining estate (a residuary gift) to St Barnabas House after you have made gifts for your loved ones, will go a long way to supporting our work. The value of this kind of gift tends to adjust in line with inflation, so it means we can receive the level of support you intended, regardless of changing financial situations.

“Leaving a gift to the hospice is the best

way to say thank you for the care I’ve had.”

The correct wording to include in your Will if you would like to leave a gift to St Barnabas House is as follows:

• Our correct legal name: St Barnabas Hospices (Sussex) Ltd – St Barnabas House

• Our main address: Titnore Lane, Worthing, BN12 6NZ

• Our registered charity number: 256789

• The type of gift or the amount you wish St Barnabas House to receive.

Other ways you could support St Barnabas House with a gift in your Will is by leaving a specific item to the hospice (for example, jewellery or artwork) or by leaving a specific amount of money (a pecuniary legacy). However you choose to support St Barnabas House, it all adds up to a very special way of helping local people with progressive, life-limiting conditions.

A lasting gift to St Barnabas HouseGifts in Wills come in all sizes but, as you can see, whatever the amount, each gift will allow St Barnabas House to make a real difference to the lives of the people we support.

Miss V left us a gift in her Will of £40,292. Here’s how we used that to support local people with life-limiting conditions.

£6,875covered the cost of 11 days of care on the In-patient Unit for a patient – this is the average length of time patients spend on the In-patient Unit.

£159enabled us to provide five relaxing complementary therapy sessions.

£35allowed a patient to enjoy a bath in one of our fully accessible bathrooms.

£250enabled us to hold a social evening for bereaved relatives, allowing them to gain support from their peers and meet others who have suffered a loss.

£13,140covered the cost of our piped oxygen supply for a full year.

£2,025paid for 24 hours of the Hospice at Home team. If a patient choses to remain in their own home, then our Hospice at Home team will work with other community services to support them by providing palliative care at home.

£40,292

£17,808 paid for one day of all the care services provided by St Barnabas House, both at the hospice and in patients’ own homes.

“Making sure he was pain free was always one of the f irst

questions: trying to make sure that whatever else was going

on he wasn’t in any pain. It was about treating him as an individual and not as a
