Your local Peoples Pharmacist focuses solelyon dispensing medications and expert healthadvice, right? This is true, but it is not the fullanswer. Your Peoples Pharmacist is also awealth of knowledge about home health careitems and aids for daily living. Perhaps theseare pharmacy items you are not familiar with. These products can help make your daily lifeeasier and your home safer. Lets take a look atsome of the most popular home health careitems. The most common home health care itemsthat your local Peoples Pharmacist stocks arecanes and walkers. Canes and walkers can bevery helpful if you have issues with balance orhave an injury. A cane can provide a third pointof contact with the ground to help stabilizeyour footing. Why do you think hikers usewalking poles? The style, shape, colour andextra features of canes are endless. Check withyour Peoples Pharmacist to see which style isright for you and to ensure it is the right size. Also you should make sure the cane tip is notbroken or damaged. A damaged cane tip canmake the end slippery or dangerous. One ofmy favourite cane accessories is the caneholder. This little attachment ensures thatwhen you rest your cane against a wall orcountertop, it does not slide down to theground. I also like the ice pick attachment forslippery sidewalks.

The next step up in mobility and balanceassistance from a cane, is the walker. The mostcommon type have four wheels and a basket.Newer models, of the four wheeled walker, foldup to fit in a car trunk and are surprisingly light. The best feature is that they have a seat! If youhave difficulty walking long distances, you cantake a break whenever you want. As with canes, check with your Peoples Pharmacist to ensurea proper size and fit of your walker. If you dohave a walker, make sure the hand brake worksproperly. If it is a bit loose or the cable isstretched, take it into a bicycle repair shop tobe fixed. One word about canes and walkers. Peoplemight be hesitant to use them for a few reasons. The first is the thought that they are only for oldpeople. No, they are for smart people who un-derstand that sometimes you need a bit of helpgetting around. People stare at seniors withcanes and walkers for one reason only; curiosityabout the fascinating engineering used to design these ingenious mobility aids. Anotherreason not to own a walker or cane is that theymight appear to be expensive. While this mightbe true, lets look at this another way. Supposeyou lose your balance on the way to the theatreand injure yourself. The ambulance call is be-tween $50-80. You and your guests will mostlikely have to forfeit your theatre tickets, $100+.You might also be in the emergency room for

Colorectal cancer is the third-most-common can-cer and the second-most-common cause of cancerdeaths in Canada. However, it is one of the mostpreventable forms of cancer with scheduled andthorough testing. Colorectal cancer means that cells that aren't nor-mal are growing in your colon or rectum. Thesecells grow together and form polyps. Over time, some polyps can turn into cancer. This cancer is alsocalled colon cancer or rectal cancer, depending onwhere the cancer is. If it is detected early, it is highly treatable. Thereare several lifestyle choices and regular screeningtests that can significantly reduce your risk of thisdisease. Here is some important information on riskfactors - and on tests that can help screen for col-orectal cancer.Risk factors Age: Everyone who is older than 50 has a risk ofgetting colorectal cancer. As you age, your risk forcolorectal cancer increases. In fact, more than 90%of those afflicted with the condition are over theage of 50, and the majority are 70 or older. Diet: The number one cancer that one can prevent through diet is colorectal cancer. Studieshave revealed that a healthy balanced diet that in-cludes a variety of fruits and vegetables, wholegrains, lean protein, lower fat milk products andhealthy fats hasbeen linked to a decreased risk ofcolorectalcancer. Conversely, a diet high in fat andcalories, low in fibre, vegetables and fruits and eat-

ing too much red meat and processed meats, hasbeen linked to an increased risk of the disease. Fibre is a substance found in all edible plants –fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, etc. – that is notdigested in the body. Fibre adds bulk to the stoolas it absorbs water; a soft, bulky stool stimulates thewalls of the colon to move feces through quicklyand easily. Fibre also absorbs carcinogens in thebowel, and combined with fast movement of stool, toxic substances come in less contact with the lin-ing of the colon and rectum. If feces are kept in thecolon for a longer than average period of time, there is a chance that toxins may build up. For ex-ample, colonic bacteria produce toxic waste andcolon cancer may be linked to prolonged exposureto these toxins. Hence, the timely and regular elim-ination of waste is always recommended. For thatreason, according to researchers, insoluble fibremight display the most protective effects againstcolorectal cancer. A sedentary lifestyle. If you're inactive, you're more likely to developcolon cancer. Studies have shown that those whoengage in regular, moderate exercise such as briskwalking, dancing, and skating are at a lower risk ofdeveloping colorectal cancer than those who are. Those with higher levels of activity, i.e. more in-tense/vigorous exercise for a longer duration, canreduce risk even further. Vigorous exercise includesrunning, cycling, and aerobics. Exercise is thoughtto lower colorectal cancer risk in part by prevent-

ing/reducing excess body weight, another risk factorfor colorectal cancer, and regulating hormones. Thecolon acts as a sewage plant. It recycles the materialsyour body can use and stores the waste for disposal. The longer waste sits in the colon or rectum, thelonger toxic materials have to leach out of the solid-ifying stool and back into your tissues. Exercise getsyour body moving, which helps move the waste inyour body. This is because exercise stimulates peri-stalsis, a wave-like muscular contraction that helpspush waste through the colon. Family history: You're more likely to developcolon cancer if you have a parent, sibling with thedisease. If more than one family member has coloncancer or rectal cancer, your risk is even greater. While this may be in part to genetic factors, it mayalso result from living in a similar environment oradopting a similar lifestyle. Polyps: A colon polyp is a small clump of cells thatforms on the lining of the colon. Most colon polyps

are harmless. But over time, some colon polyps candevelop into coloncancer. It has been shown that re-moving polyps that have been discovered by rectalexams and colonoscopies can reduce your risks ofdeveloping colorectal cancer. Inflammatory bowel disease: Crohn's diseaseand Ulcerative colitis have been associated with anincreased risk of colorectal cancer. TestsSome tests can prevent colorectal cancer. Screeningtests look for a certain disease or condition beforeany symptoms appear. Catching colon cancer earlywith screening can greatly increase your survival.Doctors are able to make such a diagnosis by ad-ministering a variety of tests that analyze the rectumand rectal tissue as well as the blood. Common testsinclude: Rectal exam: A doctor or nurse examines the rec-tum with a gloved finger to feel for any irregularitiesin the rectum or detect the presence of any polyps.

The town of Port McNeill, the famed "Gate-way to the Broughton Archipelago" – sits onthe northeast side of Vancouver Island. It liessurrounded by the staggering grandeur ofmountains, rainforest and the islands of thearchipelago - an area that is part of the largerGreat Bear Rainforest. This small, thriving community offers big, exciting things to do: hiking, whale watching, sea kayaking, fishing, diving, bird watching, walking, caving and photography. Port Mc-Neill is a vital, friendly place. Though thetown radiates out from the harbour, seem-ingly with no centre, its sense of communityruns large and deep.

Framed by the picturesque North ShoreMountains, North Vancouver offers unprece-dented access to nature along with urbancomforts. Colorectal Cancer....Continued From Page 8

Fecal occult blood test (FOBT): This is a test look-ing for hidden blood in the feces, that can't be seenwith the eye. Blood in the stool can be a sign of col-orectal cancer. Regular FOBT testing is recom-mended in people aged 50-74 years, since earlydetection can improve treatment and survival. Un-fortunately it does have a high false positive rate forconditionsother than cancer, such as: inflammationof the colon, peptic ulcer and hemorrhoids, there-fore, a colonoscopy will usually be performed if youhave a positive result. Colonoscopy: Colonoscopy uses a long, flexibleand slender tube attached to a video camera andmonitor to view your entire colon and rectum. Thedoctors can also take out tissues or polyps (growthsof tissue) so that they can be analyzed for a morecomplete diagnosis.

Sigmoidoscopy: A sigmoidoscope (a thin, lightedtube) is used to look inside a person's rectum andlower colon, also called the sigmoid. The sigmoido-scope checks for any abnormalities, including polypsand cancer. Colorectal cancer does not discriminate, and eventhe healthiest individual can develop the disease. However, diet, lifestyle and regular testing can helpin preventing this ailment.

a while; I'm assuming your leisure time is valuable.I think you can see where I'm going with thisargument. Don't let misplaced pride cause youto make a bad health care decision. I'm sure that you have heard that the bath-room is the most dangerous room in the home. This makes sense. It is small, has many slipperysurfaces, lots of pointed edges and we are oftenstanding on one foot. Your local Peoples Phar-macist has many items to help make this roomsafer. From no-slip floor and bath mats to grabbars to bathtub seats to raised toilet seats, oddsare your local Pharmacist has them in stock orcan order them in for the next day. To makegetting in and out of the bathtub safer youdon't need to install grab handles bolted oneach wall. If you want to install them, it is agreat idea. But all you might need to make thebathroom safer is a grab bar that clamps on tothe side of the tub. It installs in minutes andprovides a firm hold to help you maintain yourbalance when you step in or out of the bath-tub. Again if you might think a bath rail is em-barrassing or impractical. If you fall in thebathroom and need assistance, chances areyou might be naked. I rest my case. This next home health care item I have per-sonal experience with. Yes, I wear compressionleg stockings during work. No one can seethem as the look like regular socks, but at theend of the day my legs do not feel tired norsore. I have several pairs and highly recom-mend them to anyone who stands on their feeta lot. When you stand all day, there is a ten-dency for fluid to pool at your ankles, causingthem to swell. This can be very uncomfortable.Wearing compression socks will help to preventthis swelling. Many brands are reasonablypriced and come in a vast array of colours, styles and sizes. The best part is that some ex-tended medical plans might pay for them.Check with your insurance plan for coverage.Wearing compression socks during a long

Focus On ASA 81mgMay Help During A Heart Attack

If you think you are having a heart attack, calling911 for medical attention and chewing 2 ASA 81mgtablets may save your life.

ASA 81mg slows the blood's clotting action by re-ducing the clumping of platelets. Platelets are cells thatclump together and help to form blood clots. ASA81mg keeps platelets from clumping together, thushelping to prevent or reduce blood clots.

During a heart attack, blood clots form in an al-ready-narrowed artery and block the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle (or to part of the brain,in the case of stroke). When taken during a heart at-tack, ASA 81mg slows clotting and decreases the sizeof the forming blood clot.

Talk to your doctor or a Peoples Pharmacist aboutASA 81mg.

Peoples Drug Mart Walks For ALS Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a rapidly progressive, neuromusculardisease. It attacks the motor neurons that transmit electrical impulses fromthe brain to the voluntary muscles in the body. When they fail to receivemessages, the muscles lose strength, atrophy and die. Since the disease fre-quently takes its toll before being positively diagnosed, many patients are de-bilitated before learning they have ALS. The disease wreaks a devastating effecton patients as well as their families. Peoples Drug Mart is pleased to support the The ALS Society of BC bybeing title sponsor for the BC & Yukon Walks For ALS. Peoples Drug Martand The ALS Society of BC have partnered together for the BC Walks for ALSsince 2005. Since then, the Walks for ALS in BC & Yukon has raised over$4,371,921. The ALS Society of BC raises funds for both research and to provide directservices and support to those currently living with ALS. Until a cure is found, the Society provides patient services to improve the quality of life of thosediagnosed with this disease by offering an extensive equipment loan pro-gram, support groups, and educational materials. airplane flight will also help prevent fluid frompooling at your feet. Why do you think they sellthem at airports or give them away in first class? Another group of products that your local Peoples Pharmacist carries are collectively calledaids for daily living. For most of us, an aid fordaily living is coffee. But seriously, aids for dailyliving are products that make life's little tasks eas-ier. They are especially helpful for people witharthritis or other mobility issues. The list ofhandy gadgets is endless. There are grippers tohelp open jars, adapters to make turning housekeys easier, shirt button threaders, uniquelyshaped knives for kitchen cutting and more. Askyour Peoples Pharmacist for a catalogue of theseproducts. I personally like the reacher wand, itwould make picking up little branches in theyard easier on my back. Less bending over topick up every little branch. Lastly, let us not forget about braces and jointstabilizers. Do you have a sore knee or wrist?More than likely there is a brace or joint stabilizerto make you more comfortable while healing.Wrist, knee, ankle or thumb, odds are yourPeoples Pharmacist has one in stock or can orderit to arrive the next day. I still wear my anklebrace from time to time. Not out in public, justwhile at home or sleeping. If you have a bracethat you don't wear, because it is unsightly orbulky, why not just wear it at home? It is usuallybest to wear a brace as often as possible, or asrecommended by your doctor or physiothera-pist, but if this is not possible then just wear itat home. It is better than not at all. Your local Peoples Pharmacist is a greatsource of information for more than just med-ications and supplements. Aids for daily living, mobility aids and compression socks are just afew of the products your community Pharma-cist has information about. If you have anyquestions or concerns about your health, justask your Peoples Pharmacist. You will be sur-prised how they can help you live better. Darlene BoothR.H.N., B.S.W.

Preventative living is and has been my ideology ever sincemy teenage years. While the practice has not always been perfect, some thread has been constant and a recent medical checkupconfirmed that prevention can payoff over the long run. Havingreached the twilight of my middle ages with a modicum ofgrace, a blood test showed slightly elevated cholesterol levels. This concerned my doctor enough to do a heart disease riskassessment based mainly on lifestyle practices coupled withsome genetic factors. We were both happy with the outcome.A 3% risk factor is not so bad, but this was an indicator tothrow some more love into nurturing my cardiovascular system.Heart disease is a leading cause of death among Canadiansand this is one area where I don’t want my wake up call to bethe final curtain. Heart healthy living is as much about letting go as it is aboutpaying attention to what you are bringing in. Throwing hearthealthy foods and supplements into a system that is taxed tothe max is not going to be an efficient strategy. Hearth healthantagonists include stress, sedentary living, smoking, drugs, excess alcohol, obesity and a predisposition toward eating toomany “fun” foods. “Fun” foods are those that are generallyfried, frosted or free of any nutritional benefit whatsoever.Cleaning up these factors alone will give your heart a boost inthe right direction. As with all lifestyle choices, it is best not totake on too much change all at once. Once the wheels ofchange are chugging without too much effort, begin to grad-ually add foods and supplements to support the system. Always consult your health professional before makingchanges to your usual routine. The following are some of my favourite heart happy nutri-tional supports:1. Fibre from fruits, vegetables, grains and legumes has manybenefits including helping to manage cholesterol levels. Aim forabout 25-30 grams daily and add a supplement if needed.2. Coenzyme Q10 is a powerful antioxidant which is also involvedin energy production and maintenance of cellular integrity.CoQ10 iswidely available in a balanced diet but supplementationcan be very beneficial for heart health.3. Essential fatty acids are found in raw nuts and seeds as well

as cold water fish oils. EFAs help to support normalization ofblood pressure by promoting healthy blood vessel dilation aswell as having a positive effect on cholesterol and triglyceridelevels. 4. Turmeric has powerful anti inflammatory properties andstudies are finding it beneficial in keeping arteries clear ofplaque which can reduce the risk of heart attack. It is availablein supplemental form or you can use it liberally in cooking. Ithas gained recent popularity as a tea as well.5. Magnesium is a mineral that has been making the nutri-tional news in many areas of health; some studies are linkingmagnesium deficiency to heart disease. This important mineralplays a role in energy production, nerve function and musclerelaxation. The best dietary sources for magnesium are darkgreen vegetables, nuts, fish, whole grains and legumes. 6. L-Carnitine is an amino acid found in red meat that supportscardiovascular health at a cellular level. This nutrient aids inenergy production and cellular waste management. It is availablein supplemental form for those who don't eat red meat.7. Green tea or green tea extract has been reported to promotehealthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Studies suggest that3-5 cups per day seems to be of benefit in reducing risk factorsfor heart attack and stroke.8. Garlic does more than just keep vampires at bay. It is a pow-erful antioxidant and it has also been shown to lower bloodpressure and keep cholesterol levels in check.9. Plant sterols are natural fatty compounds found in plantfoods. They benefit the heart by blocking absorption of cholesterol in the digestive process. Just another great reasonto eat your veggies! Lastly, don't forget the benefit of relaxation and a positivemindset. There are studies that have linked negative emotionsto a greater risk of heart disease. While it is unclear at this timewhether this is because a positive attitude correlates to betterself care, or if constant stress takes its toll on physiology, thereis no harm to come from a healthy dose of optimism. Take abreak, breathe deeply, rest your mind and cultivate gratitudefor the amazing job your heart does every minute of every day. Good Health to You!
