That’s the aim of the South African Na- tional Biodiversity Institute’s (Sanbi) team heading for the 2012 Chelsea Flower Show, in the UK. Counting the days are designers Ray Hud- son and David Davidson, who set out a four- part display showcasing the diversity of South African flora. Davidson says, “Many people who display at the show go there to sell flowers, but we go there with the intension of showing off our country.” Themed Gateways – A Botanical Journey, it will showcase locations from different parts of South Africa, along with vegetation unique to those areas. “We’ve created a ‘pop-up story book’ for the display, in that there are four water paintings as backdrops and the vegetation blends in with it,” explains Davidson. “The exhibit resembles the diary of a trav- eller who visits places like the Southern Cape to see a fisherman’s cottage or a Cape Dutch manor house.” Some members of the team are considered “part of the furniture”, but for others, like Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden event coor- dinator Alison Pekeur, this year’s show is a first. Pekeur, who has taken over from event manager Sarah Struys, says that even though it is a massive undertaking, she is overwhelmed with excitement. “I am nervously excited,” Pekeur says. “We have a brilliant team and many of them have done this for years.” She says the request to accompany the team was “the cherry on top. I’ve been work- ing at the garden for eight years and as much as this will be extremely challenging, given that it is an international event, I am ready for it.” Transporting the vegetation from South Africa to Chelsea is a gruelling task and has to be done in one day. Annette McCarthy, a representative from a forwarding company, handles all the ad- ministration for the Sanbi team and the plants. McCarthy says: “We have to make sure all the paper work is done correctly and that the arrangements to transport the plants are done with no hiccups. “Customs at airports can be rather sticky with the plants because they are protected species and they have to be checked before being allowed out of the airport.” Martin Upton, a South African Airways freight representative, says the boxes are loaded onto a direct flight to London. “Because we have to work on a tight time- line, within 24 hours, we avoid delays at all cost because we have to maintain the plants till the last day of the show,” says Upton. The team will leave for Chelsea early in May to set up for the show which takes place from 22 to 26 May. This is the second year the South African Gold Coin Exchange is sponsoring the team. Chairman Alan Demby says last year they won gold, this year they need to do it again. “Last year we made a medallion for Davidson and Hudson as an incentive for winning gold. This year we are going to do the same, so I hope you will bring home the gold, team Sanbi.” SCALED DOWN: Designers Ray Hudson and David Davidson created a downsized model of their display for this year’s Chelsea Flower show. The exhibit will be arranged exactly the same way as it is seen on the model. Photos: Stefni Herbert BY THE SEASHORE: Part of the display will include scenes typical of the Southern Cape coast where fishermen’s cottages are very close to the beach. Dear reader,

I’ve received interesting, challenging andvaried responses to my last column, withmany applauding my running and a fewquestioning whether I was “seriously doingthis”.

Those who know me well enough, willknow that I don’t commit lightly, neither doI conjure up stories. In fact, I’m known forbeing – often to my detriment – too honest.

To those of little faith: I know I’ve mas-tered the art of looking chilled, but I have witnesses who canback me, in the form of my run-ningmates. They seemepuffingand panting alongside themevery Tuesday and Thursday, occasionally yielding for a fewbrief seconds to remove my or-thotics, tie my laces and pitymyself for having painful an-kles. I’ve lived with this pain –and many others – all my lifeand it hasn’t stopped me fromtaking part in any sport or ac-tivity.

All the more reason I feel agreat sense of achievement onfinishing my run, with my sights firmly seton running 10km in about five weeks’ time,God willing.

On a more ambitious level, I’ve heardwhispers from coach Farouk about runninga half marathon in November. Eish!

This comment from a reader reads: “I en-joyed your ‘No guts, no glory’ piece... showedthat editors are people too, who once experi-enced hardships...”

Touche, Clint! Often, people judge us bythe image and persona we project, or meas-ure our worth in terms of the positions wehold, or our status or wealth. They forget tolook past the outer at the real person, whohas had both good and bad life experiences. If you are generally a positive person withcoping skills, most people assume that yourlife was a breeze, that you’ve been privilegedand have never had any hardships.

In my profession, for example, I am chal-lenged nearly every day, on a range of issues;

from diversity and transformation to why Ielected to print a photo last week of ouraward winning advertising colleagues. I amfair game and controversial enough, by vir-tue of my being an editor of colour on edi-tions as diverse as the 10 that People’s Postpublishes each week. I’ve been asked wheth-er my editorial decisions are influenced bymy being Coloured. A fair question, to whichI responded by citing the media’s role as oneof reporting news and informing, educatingand entertaining our readers; but more im-

portantly, one of using thepowerful platform of ournewspapers to reflect ourcountry’s diverse landscapeand sensitively play our rolein transformation throughthe stories we tell and how wetell them.

Behind the scenes, story de-velopment in our newsroomis intricate’ from conceptual-ising to final editing andprint. We brief our journal-ists extensively on story an-gles, the multiple voices theirstories should contain andthe pictures to complement

text. Most importantly, we respect that eachof our 10 zoned papers have their own identi-ty, community and heartbeat and that eachpaper should reflect that.

I welcome your feedback, good and bad, asit opens the door to honest engagement. Ifour country is to achieve true democracy, upfront conversations such as the ones Ihave with my readers must take place, notonly in our business interactions but in so-cial circles too. Themoreweexpress our con-cerns, fears, insecurities, and the countlesspositives South Africans can be proud of, thecloser we will move to true reconciliation atgrassroots level – where it truly counts.

Behind thepublic persona

TONY ROBINSON

THEY don’t say how they will do it, but asmall group of Noordhoek environmentalactivists wants to get rid of the cute littlegrey squirrels on the Common.

Their crime? They “spread oak seeds andeat tree bark”.

That is exactly what squir-rels have always done but, suddenly, the bunny-huggersfind it offensive.

They see oak trees andsquirrels as unwelcome al-iens.

For those who don’t know it,the Noordhoek Common, atthe foot of Chapman’s PeakDrive, is a wonderful commu-nity asset used for equestrianevents, community fairs, pic-nics, informal ball games anddog walking. It is graced by some wonderfulold oaks and the beauty of the common hasmade it a popular location for film shoots.

But the greenies want to take away thiscommunity playground and turn it into anindigenous nature reserve complete withindigenous mole rats and snakes so theoaks, planes and squirrels have to go.

Now oak trees are as much a part of theCape as grape vines, Cape Dutch architec-ture and milk tart. They are part of our cul-tural heritage. You will find them in everyBoland town and, for the most part, eachtree is treasured. Stellenbosch, a town ofknowledge and learning, takes great pridein its oaks and delights in being called Eike-stad – Oak City.

It is the oak trees that make the WesternCape different (and better) than other parts

of South Africa. And they are not invaders. They were brought here on purpose to doa job. They have served us well, providingwonderful shade in the towns and on theboundaries of our famous cricket grounds.

Oaks grow slowly and with difficulty. They are battered by winds and storms andthis gives them great character. They

record the history of winterspast and their struggle for aplace in the sun should be a mor-al lesson to us all.

So one must ask what kind ofcultural louts would want to killthe squirrels and chop down theoaks? And how will they kill thesquirrels? It’s a question thebunny-huggers don’t answer inthe unsolicited document theyhave prepared on the futuremanagement of the common.

Will they try to do it quietly sothat their children don’t know about theslaughter? Or will they have the courage oftheir convictions and do it in the open. Per-haps they could invite the Mayor along toperform the first squirrel execution. Itwould make a striking change from cuttingribbons. TV coverage would be guaranteed.I’m afraid we are dealing with humourlesspeople afflicted with tunnel vision. Whatthey don’t understand is that the oaks arethere because we love them and becausethey are a part of our heritage. In fact, oaktrees have been around for a lot longer thansome of the self-appointed guardians of eve-rything indigenous.

So, in the end, there should be a choice. Are the unwanted aliens oak trees andsquirrels or those who would axe andbutcher them?

Now the bunny-huggerswant to kill the squirrels

BED BUSTERS has just moved from CapeTown to Salt River because they needed big-ger premises.

“Weneeded to expand, being theonly genu-ine Bed Factory shop in the Western Cape.We are proud to say that besides guarantee-ing to beat anybody’s price on any product, some of our bed prices are slashed by morethan 50%,” says owner, Dallas.

As their logo states, these guys are trulysmashing bed prices. “This makes other bedsuppliers sit up and notice. People are wisethese days and they know when they are pay-ing too much. Why should someone pay morethan R8 000 for a top class bed, when they canget the best for under R5 000? We even havea queen sized orthopaedic bed for underR3 000.

“We have been in business for eight yearsand we are going from strength to strength. Most people in business are downsizing, butwe are expanding because the customerknows value for money.

“These days people battle to make endsmeet. Everything is going crazy from petrolto a loaf of bread.

“Everybody needs to eat and everybodyneeds to sleep, and this is why we guarantee

to beat anybody’s price on a bed in some cas-es by as much as R3 000 for the exact samebed. And we only do genuine brands, no dirt, scratch or damage of any sort, just brand newbeds at factory prices.

“The reason why we are able to smash bedprices is that we know how to buy in bulk,we also know how to negotiate low rentalrates and mostly how to keep costs down. With all these savings, our system allows allthe money to be passed back to the customer, because we know without our customers wedo not have a business.

We have a very well trained team, as serv-ice is important to us because every custom-er deserves great service. There is nothingmore important than our customer – theypay our salaries – and we will go out of ourway to give them the service they deserve.

“We offer a fast and efficient delivery serv-ice and like our beds, delivery costs are alsothe lowest around. We even have a lay-buysystem which offers the bed at 3 months in-terest free. We have arranged loans with atopbankat 0%interest for employedcustom-ers. All in all, you can see that you do nothave to go into huge debt to own a top classbed!” Dallas concluded.

Bigger shop means bigger savings

gusted at the behaviour of thesuspects because it gives taxiowners and drivers a horriblename.

“If I had a say in what happensto the suspects, I would not givethem bail and they can rot in jail. The taxi industry has been try-ing and working hard to im-prove their image and peoplelike this, who tarnish it by harm-ing others, do not deserve to befree.

“Commuters use taxis on adaily basis because they trusttaxis, but when something ofthis nature takes place, the jus-tice system should have no mer-cy and simply keep them in jail.”

The suspects appeared inWynberg Magistrate’s Court onThursday 19 April, on armedrobbery charges.

World’s largest garden draws blossoming crowdJUST outside the little town ofLisse in the southern part of theNetherlands, spring is celebrat-ed in a unique and splendid way.

InSeptember last year, a sizea-ble army of gardeners set towork to hand-plant more thanseven million flower bulbs in apublic park in Keukenhof.

Sixty-three years ago the may-or of Lisse invited thirty bulbgrowers to participate in a flow-er show.

In the closing years of the warpeople fought off starvation bybaking with flour ground from

tulip bulbs – what better way toshrug off the horrors of the occu-pation, heart-breaking personalloss, the cold of winter and theheaviness of economic strugglethan a celebration of springtimebeauty?

Within a few years Keukenhof(in the 1400s it was literally a“kitchen garden”) was attract-ing significant numbers of inter-national visitors, among themroyalty from all over Europe. Now, 91 Royal Warrant holderssupply the plant material thatcovers 32 hectares. More than 51

million visitors havedropped by. It’s one ofEurope’s premiere at-tractions.

Oxygen is the single most important nutrient for the bodyOxygen is the single most important nutrient for the body

As a lack of sufficient cellular oxygen is a major cause of poor health, leading to conditions such as arthritis, low immunity, constanttiredness, regular cold and flues , migraine and so on, when the bodyis flooded with an activated form of oxygen, namely ozone, peopleconstantly report that these conditions as well as their general healthand energy levels dramatically improve.

R200 000 shot inarm for Red CrossA SPECIALIST ward at Red Cross Hospi-tal is set to receive a R200 000 cash injec-tion.

The boost for the B2 general medical wardcomes from the Sea Harvest Kids for Kidscampaign.

The ward is one of the busiest at the hospi-tal and specialises in the treatment of chil-dren with infectious and chronic illnesses, including HIV/Aids and TB.

Built in 1956, the ward is in urgent needof modernisation.

Professor Brian Eley, Head of the hospi-tal’s Paediatric Infectious Diseases Unit, says the funds are a step forward in a long-term project to upgrade B2.

Says Eley, “HIV, TB, diarrhoea and pneu-monia are collectively responsible for morethan60%ofunder-fivemortality inSouthAf-rica. The proposed upgrade will significant-ly improve the care of many children withthese poverty-related diseases.

“The redesigned ward should also lowerthe risk for hospital-acquired infections, andimprove the care of children with drug-re-sistant TB, a serious and growing healthchallenge.”

Sea Harvest financial director Cindy Hesssays the special relationship between Kidsfor Kids and Red Cross hospital makes per-fect sense.

“We are delighted to be able to play a smallpart in helping an institution that dedicatesitself to helping millions of youngsters fromacross the country, and even the rest of Afri-ca.”

The funds were raised when the company

pledged 10c for every box of seafood productssold nationwide.

A seafood banquet, held in conjunctionwith St Joseph’s Marist College, was hostedonNationalChildren’sDay last year, to raisemore funds.

After the handover, the company took 60children of St Joseph’s Home, in Montana,on an outing to see a movie. St Josephs ishome to chronicallyill children, for manytheir first time at the movies.

CEO of the Children’s Hospital Trust, Lou-ise Driver, says the partnership is a “greatfit”.

“It encourages children to eat the healthyfish meals they love, while, at the same time, they are donating money to ensure sick chil-dren at the hospital keep getting the verybest medical care. We hope these funds willgo some way to making a difference to thenurses and other healthcare professionalswho do such excellent work here.”

After collectively raising nearly R500 000in twoyears throughKids forKids,Hess saysthe company is “100%” committed to nextyear’s campaign. “What could be more re-warding than knowing you are helping thou-sands of sick children get better? We are100% committed to being on board for a thirdyear and hope to raise even more funds tobenefit the hospital.”

Patients who were unable to go to the mov-ies received activity sets. “Sometimes asmall gesture can make a big difference tosomeone’s day,” says Hess.

STEFNI HERBERT

TRYING different ways to soothe achesand pains can be a tedious task especiallywhen there are so many methods availa-ble.

A colleague recently told me about a differ-ent treatment she had come across, it couldbe good for me to try and it is typical of meto want to try something new.

By the time I arrived at the spa, I had notdiscovered that it was something that I nev-er, in my wildest experiences, thought Iwould ever be trying.

I went inside and filled out the necessarypaperwork, which is a similar to a recordcard you would have at your general practi-tioner.

Spa assistant, Candice Davies escorted meto a treatment room and started explainingthe procedure, but one step over the thresh-old and I had visions of looking like LadyGaga at the Grammy Awards last year, sit-ting in this contraption.

Davies first question to me, after I gaspedat the sight of the machine, was “are youclaustrophobic?!” Luckily, my claustropho-bia is mild and has more to do with other hu-mans being in my “personal-space bubble”than machines encapsulating me.

I was asked to strip to my birthday suit andwrap a white towel around me.

Davies says, “We use a white towel to seeif you have detoxed because toxins are darkin colour.” Ready to receive my fair share ofOzone, I carefully step into the machine see-ing that the element where steam is releasedis situated between my feet and place a heart-rate monitor over my middle finger.

After Davies closes the machine and fidg-ets with the dials on the top of the casing, sheplaces a bib over my head and tightens itaround my neck so that the steam does notescape and puts an air supply around myneck. One session lasts 25 minutes and whileI was steaming at 39 degrees, Davies toldabout other regular clients.

“One of our clients has cancer and whilewe’re not trying to cure her of it, it helps im-

prove her health, as she is yet to go for medi-cal treatment,” says Davies.

I asked about the highest temperaturesomeone received their treatment on and shesays 45 degrees was the highest so far, but theheart-rate monitor, which isn’t always com-pulsory, has to be worn and someone has tosit with the person.

Davies briefly explained Ozone is created“when oxygen atoms are hit by electricity, itseparates and latches on to another oxygenatom which in turn creates Ozone.”

She also warned that “inhaling too muchsteam after the procedure is complete couldleave you feeling like your chest is tight be-cause Ozone irritates your mucous lining.”

When the procedure was complete, Daviesopened the bib to let steam escape slowly, re-moved the bib and opened the cabinet.

I inspected the towel to see traces of my tox-ins, but alas, none were found and preparedmyself to leave.

Once I left the room, my chest did exactlywhat Davies warned about - it pulled tight.

In the reception area Davies handed me aglass of water and reassured me that it willwear off in a short period of time and it did.

While the first time doesn’t work miracles,it is an experience I would consider tryingagain.Ozone Health is located in DixonStreet, Greenpoint. For more informationcontact Candice on (021) 418 3040.

Exhibition focuses on environmental changesERDMANN Contemporary andthe Photographers gallery ZAat number 63 ShortmarketStreet in Cape Town is thrilledto announce that it will hostBarbara Wildenboer’s sixth so-lo exhibition, “Canaries in thecoalmine” on Wednesday 2 Mayuntil Saturday 2 June.

Birds have long been seen as in-

dicators of environmental changeand can essentially be seen as the“canaries in the coalmine” whenit comes to climate change.

The premise for this exhibitionis the concept “solastalgia”. Theterm was coined by environmen-tal philosopher Glenn Albrecht in2004 by combining the Latin wordsolacium (comfort) and the Greekword algae (pain). Solastalgia is

emplaced change, a loss of solace, and involves a sense of melancho-lia. It is used to describe the emo-tional distress experienced whenone realizes that one’s home envi-ronment is under threat; a form ofhomesickness one gets while stillat home.

The exhibition will consist of aseries of paper sculpture, alteredbooks, photographs, digital and

paper installation. Entry is free. For more information or imagescontact Naomi Menyoko at Erd-mann Contemporary.

Math whizzes break recordsIT WAS enough to warm thecockles of any math whizz’sheart when two record entrieswere made at a number-crunch-er event.

A record entry of 8 312 partici-pants from 153 Western Capeschools converged at the UCTMaths Competition at the univer-sity’s Upper Campus on Monday16 April.

A warning of heavy traffic con-gestion was unfounded and UCTspokesperson Pat Lucas says the

event “ran like clockwork”.“There were many people on

campus, but not all of the entrantsare competing for the first time, somany knew their way around,”says Lucas.

More than 280 participants from13 schools in Khayelitsha werebused in.

After registration, candidatesmoved into 63 venues across thecampus to write the contest pa-pers. More than 200 maths teach-ers assisted in the running of thecompetition.

Separate papers forgrades eight to 12were set by a com-mittee of mathteachers andUCT lecturers.Each paperconsisted of 30questions; 10easy ones, fol-lowed by 10which requiredsome head-scratching, and end-ed with 10 brain-strain-

ers.The problems aredesigned to test in-sight and creativethinking, unlikeschool exams, which consist ofstandard exer-cises requiringstereotypical so-lutions.Professor John

Webb, of the UCTMathematics Depart-

ment, says while full

marks in the competition is a“rare event”, the competition is“an excellent way of uncoveringmathematical potential amongour high schools”.

While the best pupils will viewith each other for top honours asindividuals, those who feel twoheads are better than one maycompete as pairs. Pairs and indi-viduals write the same paper, butare ranked separately.

The results will be announced ata prize-giving on Thursday 7 Junein the Baxter Concert Hall.

Free, at last?DEMOCRACY in South Africa has come ofage. Eighteen years ago, all South Africansvoted in the country’s first democratic elec-tions.

Like a pregnant mother expecting her firstchild, it was the hope of a new dawn.

Today, this country has been labelled a de-veloping nation. In itself, this is not a badthing. It simply means South Africa, like Bra-zil, straddles two worlds. It is not quite a firstworld, because it is hampered by so manythird world problems.

It is an indictment of the slow march oftime, however, as 18 years seems simply notenough time to fix all apartheid’s wrongs.

Millions of South Africans face a dailygrind of abject poverty, humiliation by hun-ger, a job market that is unable to providework for a people hamstrung by poor or noeducation, and a nation often blamed for anunwillingness to join the labour force.

Thousands throng to urban centres in thehope of obtaining that brighter future, as alast gasp of rhetorical promises of politicians.

Is there light at the end of this tunnel? DAleader Helen Zille has called Eastern Capelearners flocking to this province for a bettereducation ‘refugees’.

Her apology notwithstanding, the tradi-tional weapon of politicians – the blame game– helps no-one.

Our nation is peopled by inventive and in-telligent citizens with a ‘can-do’ attitude. It isthis reality that continues to make South Af-ricans ever popular with the overseas corpo-rate environment.

The unashamed siphoning of our country’sintelligentsia – across all spheres of qualifica-tions – is a shameful display of this govern-ment’s failure to stem the brain drain.

When whichever government is in powereventually wakes up to this reality, who thenwill there be to switch off the lights? Thiscountry cannot wait another 18 years to re-build a nation from the empty reserves leftby the apartheid regime.

Be responsible on the roadsI CAN’T believe what I just read in your lat-est issue. Someone sent in a text messagestating that because our government is notimplementing what he or she deems to bethe right measures to curb road deaths, itis therefore responsible for the high deathtoll in this country.

What kind of warped logic results in suchan opinion? When are SA citizens ever go-ing to take responsibility for their own ac-tions?

Government can and does help with vari-ous campaigns but the hand-holding has tostop somewhere.

It is drivers themselves who are respon-sible for road deaths - if we think we areadult enough to get a driver’s licence anda car then we should also be adult enoughto know what the dangers are when drink-ing, speeding and all the other bad driving

habits we have.Blaming the government for everything

is just passing the buck and handing thepower over our everyday actions to some-one else.

There is a slightly corny little sloganwhich goes, “Be the change you want tosee” and I think it should be applied by allthose who constantly expect the govern-ment to think for them.

Next time you reach a stop sign - cometo a complete stop, behind the line.

Next time you see a speed limit sign, check your own speed.

Next time you drive along the construc-tion area near the Koeberg interchange, slow right down to the limit currently im-posed.FAPlumstead

A letter to say thanksWITH this letter I would like tothank the staff and pupils at Wyn-berg Boys High and also the teach-ers and staff at Timour Hall prima-ry in Plumstead.

Also Mrs Anne Enrich of Fair-ways and her team for their mostwonderful Easter treat they gave tothe children of Lavender Hill andsurrounding areas and informalsettlements.

The outreach program, whichwas a one day holiday program or-ganized by the Lavender YouthCommunity Outreach and Develop-ment Project, is a non-profit organi-zation based in Lavender Hill.

As the Chief executive Officer Iwould like to express our thanksfrom all at the organization and theparents that helped and supportedus in making this event a huge suc-

cess.With all the negatives happening

within Lavender Hill we surelystand our ground by making thisday a sunshine day for our childrenat risk.

The five hundred kids that madethere way to the venue was assistedby parents and community workersfrom various entities.

I also want to thank Allen Pak-kies and her foundation for bring-ing the kids to the event, LucindaEvans and her team for their kind

and helping support as well as MissAnneliese Thomas of Images ForChangewhobrought the childrenofthe adjacent flats along. Thanks toall of you.

Abig thanks toourWardCouncil-lor Marieta Petersen of ward 68.Thanks for your contribution, yourattendance and support.

Wynberg Junior edge out Primrose in tense matchA TENSE encounter on Saturdayresulted in Wynberg Boys Jun-ior School edging out local rivalsPrimrose Rugby Club at the startof the junior rugby season.

The weather conditions on matchday were overcast but that didn’tkeep supporters from witnessingthis titanic battle between two well-drilled, young teams.

Wynberg, who just returned from

a successful tour to Johannesburg, had a lot to prove to their support-ers and coaches, as well as them-selves, after years of being labelled“an under achieving team.”

The game started brightly for theboys in blue and white stripes, withMaxwell Jewell crossing the line af-ter just five minutes of play. Thesubsequent conversion was missedby Wynberg captain Taine Hackett.

Primrose replied with a penalty,

making the score 5-3, but thisseemed to provide the hosts with ex-tra motivation and they scoredtheir second try through powerfullock, Inga Halu. This time the con-version was successful and Wyn-berg moved into a 12-3 lead. Anumber of penalties conceded byWynberg just before half-time gavePrimrose a chance to claw theirway back through the boot of theiroutside centre. It was a first half of

massive hits and all out rugby, withneither team holding back at thepoint of contact.Primrose startedthe second half the better of the twosides and crossed over for a try aftersome poor defence by the hosts. Theconversion which followed nar-rowed the deficit to just one pointwith the score at 13-12 to Wynberg.

The game was on a knife’s edge, yet both sides were still playingtheir normal expansive games.

Wynberg worked their way up fieldand were ultimately rewarded witha try through prop Justin Pringle.

Taine slotted his second conver-sion and Wynberg were back infront, leading 19-13. As the gameneared the end, Wynberg surprisedeveryone with a tighthead scrum. The ball was kicked out by scrum-half Uzair Saban, and Wynberg re-corded their first victoryoverPrim-rose in three years.

Hamiltons on a highLIAM MOSES

HAMILTONS rugby club willhead into their clash againstStellenbosch tomorrow nightflush with confidence, afterbrushing aside Villager andFalse Bay in consecutivematches.

The Sea Point-based side havemade an impressive statementwith their results over the pasttwo weekends, first crushingtheir traditional rivals Villager53-11 in their opening game andthen beating False Bay 49-3 on Sat-urday in Constantia.

The most recent result will bethe most significant for Hamil-tons, not only because of the man-ner of the victory but also becausethey had lost the same fixture in2010 and 2011.

A committed defensive per-formance by the home side in thefirst half meant that the scoreswere tied at 3-3 in the 39th minute, giving the vocal home crowd hope

that their team would be able tosnatch victory yet again.

However, Hamiltons managedto breach the defence in the finalminute of the first half and scoredwhat would be the first of severaltries when substitute loose for-ward Bennie Adams toucheddown after a powerful drive.

Anton Moolman, Hamiltons’head coach, says he expected acommitted performance by thehome side in the first half.

“I think False Bay came outwith a hell of a lot of heart. Theyare an immensely passionateteam and we knew the first 40minutes were going to be tough.

“But we knew that if we carriedon applying the pressure andwearing them down, the dam wallwould start to crack. This is thefirst time we have beaten themhere in three years. We look for-ward to the season ahead.”

Hamiltons went on to score sixmore tries through Dugal Robert-son, Francois Prinsloo (2), Janovan Zyl, Jandre du Plessis and JG

Giliomee, while False Bay couldnot add to the solitary penaltythey scored in the 15th minute.

False Bay coach Chris Hewet-son attributed the flood of pointsin the second half to the qualityof players on Hamiltons’ substi-tutes bench.

“Clearly in the second half, with the depth that Hamiltonshave, and the budget that theyclearly have, they came and beatus off the bench,” said Hewetson.

“We couldn’t keep up with theplayers we brought on and that’sclearly a problem for us. Our line-outs and set pieces were abysmal. It’s obviouslyadepartmentwherewe lack in at the moment becauseof the players that have left.”

Hewetson added that althoughhis side had lost several “stars”since last season, they were amore passionate team.

Hamiltons face Stellenbosch at21:00 at Danie Craven Stadium, and False Bay will play their nextgame on Saturday 5 May againstVictorians at the same venue.
