Tempers flared last Monday night when residents said they did not want the liquor outlet in the neighbourhood, saying that crime in the area would be “exacerbated”. Philip Bam, spokesperson of the Grassy Park community police forum, implored Da- vidson to consider the ramifications of his application. “We have heard that the applicant has the interests of the community at heart. But are you aware of the drug dealings that occur on the stoep of the store that is there at the mo- ment? If you claim you have the communi- ty’s interests at heart and that you come from this community, then surely you will understand the frustration,” Bam said. Davidson owns the shop where the liquor store would be. Bam asked Davidson to reconsider the ap- plication. “Do not disrespect this community by ig- noring their wishes. You have heard them tonight saying they do not want the estab- lishment in the area. The law demands that you respect the wishes of the community,” Bam said. Perivale Primary principal Denzil van Graan said he felt insulted that Davidson had promised in the People’s Post article that he would sponsor two of the school’s pupils. “Davidson hasn’t once come over to visit the school. My main concern with regard to this application is the effect it will have on pupils in this school. It won’t be a positive contribution to the community,” Van Graan said. Drug dealing concerns Van Graan also referred to concern about drug trades in front of the shop. “I have sat in one of my classrooms and just observed what was happening on the stoep at the shop and it’s concerning. And adding a liquor outlet at the premises will not bring anything positive to the communi- ty,” he said. Residents who were given the opportunity to speak reiterated throughout the meeting that they did not want the liquor outlet in the area. They suggested that a more posi- tive establishment be put up. “We will support wholeheartedly if the ap- plicant would rather use the space more pos- itively. We could use an internet cafe or even a place for our elderly to gather. Anything positive and we will give our blessing,” a res- ident said. Davidson’s lawyer, Wayne Hufkie, said the residents’ concerns and opinions were being noted at the meeting. The liquor li- cence application had not yet appeared be- fore the local subcouncil, but “the public meeting was to come get the opinions and feelings of residents”, he said. “I will now go back with my client and we will meet to discuss tonight’s meeting. This does not yet mean that we will proceed with or drop the application. This will be dis- cussed with my client,” Hufkie said. Ward councillor Leslie Isaacs, who also at- tended the meeting, said they would await the application at subcouncil level. “There a decision will be made. This year’s Slave Route Challenge on Sun-day 8 May will see participants run the
usual scenic route through the city while al-so giving honour to individual slaves of theCape’s past.Each runner will carry one of the 8000
names of slaves who appear on a “columnof memory” at the Iziko Slave Lodge in thecity centre.This was announced at the launch of this
year’s edition of the race at the museum lastweek.Farouk Meyer of Itheko Sport Athletic
Club and organiser for the Slave Route Chal-lenge explains runners will have a specificpurpose and a special honour in this year’srace, referring to the “column of memory”onwhich the names of 8000men, women andchildren are inscribed.“This year, every person who registers
will run on behalf of one of these names onthe column, allowing each runner to honoura specific personwhowas an important partof our country’s past.”
More than a raceOrganisers say the Slave Route Challenge
is more than just a race: it is a tribute to thetrials of dispossessed people who contribut-ed to the early development of Cape Townand, as a result, South Africa.The race route takes runners past several
historically significant landmarks, such asthe Castle of Good Hope, Grand Parade, theWhipping Post, Old Slave Church, the IzikoSlave Lodge and the Slave Tree Plaque.“Today the Iziko Slave Lodge is a site of
memory – a place of reconciliation andhope.The SlaveRouteChallenge provides the run-
ners the opportunity to actively engagewiththis history and to, beyond the race, explore,discover, reflect and reconnect with theirroots,” says Paul Tichmann, curator of theIziko Slave Lodge.Meyer says this year’s raceaims tohonour

A new office where abused women andchildren can get help was opened at the
end of February.The new office of Philisa Abafazi Bethu
will also provide services such as a seniors’club and support to the residents of GrassyPark,“It also includes a law clinic and legal ad-
vice, emergency safe house for survivors ofviolence, child protection services, courtsupport for domestic violence survivors andcounselling services,” says centre ownerand manager Lucinda Evans.Evans explains that Cafda, where she has
also been running a programme, is differentfrom the new centre as Cafda is a designatedchild protection agency andworkswith chil-dren and families.“[At Philisa Abafazi Bethu] we work with
women’s development and the challengeswomen face. Especially women experienc-ing violence, women who need to be up-skilled, women who need support, womenstrugglingwith substance abuse,womennotmanaging with parenting and need parent-ing support and also women who would liketo change their lives and develop them-selves,” she explains.The new centre will “offer support for
women and children, including an income-generating bakery which we need to raisefunds for”.“Also in our plans are to support women
to become entrepreneurs. The new centreis looking differently at victim empower-ment programmes,” she says.Evans encourages men who might need
support to also use the centre.Albert Fritz, provincial Minister of So-
cial Development, who opened the centrealongside Evans, says Philisa Abafazi Be-thu was established in 2008 in support ofwomen and children.“The centrewill also support and educate
women and children about their rights andfreedoms, and provide support for womenand children who are affected both directlyand indirectly with HIV/Aids,” Fritz says.In his short address at the opening, Fritz

Two with drugs at EngenA total of 612 suspects were arrested in the
Mitchell’s Plain policing cluster the pastweek.
Of these, more than a third (231 people)were arrested on charges of the possessionof drugs or dealing in drugs.
Philippi police spokesperson LieutenantLance Goliath says these drugs found by po-lice include tik, heroin, mandrax and daggaand have an estimated street value ofR45 000.
A total of 118 houses were searched fordrugs.
“On Friday at about 17:20 police in GrassyPark arrested a 38-year-old and 26-year-oldman for possession of drugs at the Engen ga-rage on Klip Road, Lotus River. The arrestscame as a result of a Ford Bantam bakkiewhich was searched. 350 units of tik werefound inside the bakkie,” Goliath explains.
The two suspects are due to appear in theWynberg Magistrate’s Court on a charge ofpossession of drugs.
Police also clampeddownon illegal liquoroutlets and arrested two suspects on liquor-related charges. A hundred litres of alcoholwas confiscated, Goliath says.
Through integrated policing, roadblockswere held throughout the Mitchell’s Plainpolicing cluster. Eleven fines, to the amountof R5500, were issued.
Twenty-nine people were arrested forcrimes against women and children.
Goliath says five firearms and ammuni-tionwere confiscatedand five suspectswerearrested for the illegal possession of fire-arms and ammunition.
“The suspects subsequently appeared andsome suspects are due to appear in a magis-trate’s xourt on charges relating to the ille-gal possession of firearms and ammuni-tion,” Goliath says.
OnSaturday at about 16:30 police arrestedtwo men, aged 25 and 30 years, for the pos-session of an unlicenced firearm, ammuni-tion and drugs.
“The arrest came about as police receiveda tip-off from the public and proceeded to awell-known drug den in Billiard Street, Bea-con Valley in Mitchell’s Plain. Upon search-ing the premises police confiscated a 7.65Astra pistol, ammunition, a magazine, dag-ga, mandrax, heroin and tik. The suspectswill appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magis-trate’s Court on charges of possession of anunlicenced firearm and ammunition and il-legal possession of drugs,” Goliath says.
Four suspects, aged between 20 and 51years, will also appear in the Mitchell’s
Plain Magistrate’s Court on charges of pos-session of an imitation firearm (also com-monly known as a zip gun), Goliath says.
“The arrest came about as the vehiclethat the suspects were driving in wasstopped and searched in Kunene Way, Port-lands and the zip gun and live ammunitionwere found and seized,” he says.
Major-General Gregory Goss, the polic-ing cluster commander, says police willcontinue clamping down on crime and theperpetrators thereof. “If you break into a home in sector two,then it will be worth it.”
These were the words of Colonel Shawnvan Wyk, Grassy Park police station’s com-mander, at a police imbizo at Sid G Rule Pri-mary School on Thursday evening.
Van Wyk was referring to the number ofproperty-related crimes that happen in theGrassy Park and Zeekoevlei areas.
“There are not much contact-relatedcrimes in this sector. However, propertycrimes are a huge concern,” Van Wyk said.
Van Wyk explained that house burgla-ries, car theft and theft out of cars were in-cluded in “property-related crime”.
He urged residents to stow away valuableitems in their homes.
“Residents should especially be vigilantwhen their cars are parked outside theirhomes. If you have a garage, rather parkyour car inside and put all valuables out ofsight. If these goods are on display in yourcar it almost serves as an invitation.”
Van Wyk added that flatscreen TVs wereespecially popular with burglars.
“These perpetrators are mostly drug ad-dicts who are out to get their next fix. To
prevent crimes from happening and escalat-ing in this sector we are encouraging resi-dents to become neighbourly and to look outfor one another’s properties. I urge resi-dents to take each others’ contact details,”he said.
Other crime issues in this area werewheelie bin theft and burglaries at schools,where criminals remove electronic equip-ment, copper pipes and taps.
Fuad Titus, chairperson of the communi-ty police forum, added that neighbourhoodwatches in the area were doing good jobs bybeing the eyes and ears of the police.
“Our police can’t be everywhere at onceand this is where the neighbourhood watch-es come in and they really do help a lot whengoing out on joint operations with police.Two operations have been done in this areain the past few months and it has provensuccessful where people were found withdrugs and sharp objects,” Titus said.
Constable Cader Farao, manager for sec-tor two in Grassy Park, relayed good newsduring the meeting, which was receivedwith much jubilation.
“We have arrested the guy known as Toss-ie. This criminal is known in the area espe-cially, with house break-ins. He was arrest-ed and is now in Pollsmoor,” Farao said.

Two robbers will both be serving 15-yearprison sentences, of which five years are
suspended, after they were convicted.The two were arrested in March last year
after armed robberies in Rylands and Lans-downe (“Toy guns used in robberies”, Peo-ple’s Post, 24 March 2015). They faced char-ges of committing robberies elsewhere aswell.
Sergeant Nkululeko Mnyaka, Lansdownepolice spokesperson, says 18-year-old Shu-roo Hoosein and 20-year-old Fadiel Dirksefrom Mitchell’s Plain were convicted inFebruary.
“The two were arrested after committingtwo armed robberies using a Toyota Yaris,robbing people at Gamsa Street in Rylandsand High Grove Road in Lansdowne. Thesuspects were spotted at Belmore AvenuebyaChubbsecurity guardwhochased themand caught them in Flamingo informal set-tlement,” Mnyaka explains.
They faced charges of aggravated rob-bery, of which two were committed in Lans-
downe, one in Grassy Park and one in Muiz-enberg.
The investigating officer, Constable So-lethu Gunya, collected the evidence to en-sure the two were found guilty, Mnyakasays.
Gunya says closing the case with a posi-tive conviction was a relief for him.
“The case in itself was not that tough todeal with. I am just glad that working on thecase for almost a year bore some fruit. It isgood to know your investigation did not goto waste,” Gunya says.
Lansdowne Captain Mvuseleli Kalipa en-courages residents to keep coming forwardwith information about crime.
“The community is urged to help in casesso we can have many more successful con-victions. People should be prepared for theprocess of giving statements and witness-ing to these events in court. with children on the autism spectrumwhen their children finish school, as there

are willing to hire adults with autism. Au-tism Western Cape is thus in the processof creating a programme for adults on thespectrum to help them obtain and main-tainplaces in theworkingarena,” she says.The programme will support and give
training to adults with autism to improvetheir job readiness and give them mentor-ship and support in the workplace. Theprogrammewill also provide education fororganisations to sustain the mentorshipprogramme.“As one of the greatest challenges of au-
tism is social interaction, the programmewould entail one-on-one training until can-didates have learnt coping mechanisms
and strategies on how to deal with socialsituations. Once the adult with autism isable to secure employment, a mentor with-in his department or store would be identi-fied. This mentor’s role would be to giveguidance and support,” she says.Organisationswould receive training on
employment and inclusion of adults withautism in the workplace. These businessescan thenbe registered as an inclusive placeof employment Bassett says.“We are appealing for help of any kind

A 30-year-old man has been ar-rested in connection with a
road accident on Jakes GerwelDrive last Tuesday.The man confessed to being in-
volved in a hit-and-run accidentthat led to the death of 35-year-oldCity of Cape Town traffic officerMogamat Faried Galant.A total of six vehicles were in-
volved in the collision.The City last week offered a
R50 000 reward for informationthat would lead to the arrest of aminibus taxi driver responsible forthe fatal collision.“The taxi was travelling in the
direction of Mitchell’s Plain atabout 07:30 when the driver lostcontrol and crossed the centre me-dian into oncoming traffic. He col-lided head-on with the car of Ga-lant,whowas driving towardsHill-star Traffic Department. Fourother cars were involved in a sec-ondary collision,” said JP Smith,Maycomember for safety and secu-rity, in a statement.Galant was declared dead on the
scene by paramedics.
Jakes Gerwel blocked“ER24 paramedics, along with
rescue services, arrived on thescene and found several wreckedvehicles, including the taxi, block-ing Jakes Gerwel Drive,” saysER24 spokesperson Russel Meir-ing.“When paramedics inspected
one of the cars, they found the life-less body of aman lying trapped in-side. On assessment, paramedicsfound that the man had already
succumbed to his multiple fatal in-juries. Nothingmore could be donefor the patient and he was declareddead on the scene.”Rescue services had to use jaws
of life equipment to free the de-ceased from the car.Fortunately, no other injuries
were reported among the othermo-torists on the accident scene. Thetaxi driver fled the scene and amanhunt ensued.Smith tells People’s Post: “[The
taxi driver] was arrested at hishome in Mfuleni at about 01:00 [onThursday] 10 March. The suspectmade a full confession at the timeof his arrest and was in possessionof the clothing worn at the time ofthe collision as well as a shoe thatmatched another left behind at thescene.”The accused appeared in court
yesterday on charges of culpablehomicide, reckless and negligentdriving and leaving the accidentscene without ascertaining inju-ries.“He is currently in custody at
Nyanga police station. He also hasnumerouswarrants of arrest pend-ing for other traffic transgressionsand has had a number of caseswithdrawn in the past,” Smithadds.“We will be paying a reward for
information received; however,wecannot reveal more details at thisstage.”The incident has seen Philippi
police station commander ColonelDennis Abels urging all road usersto be more vigilant and patientwhen using the roads and to al-ways be tolerant toward fellowroad users as well as pedestrians.Abels also offered his condolen-
ces to the traffic officer’s family.“We are shocked and saddened
by the death of yet another one ofour members. Our thoughts andprayers are with officer Galant’swife and his three children, as wellas the extended family, and theCity will provide them with coun-selling and other support duringthis difficult time.”Galant started his career with

Emergency number saves the dayTwo weeks ago I was reading TygerBur-ger*, which highlighted the point of theN1 and N2 emergency assistance number(021 946 1646).On Sunday (13 March) I was on the N2
coming from Jan Smuts Drive in Athlo-ne. Driving just past the airport I noticedmy car smoking and the heat gauge goingup. I slowed down just about 500m beforethe R300 turnoff.
Not a safe area to stop at all, I calledthe emergency number and gave themthe logistics of where I was and toldthem I was all alone (the scariest fiveminutes ever).
Within five minutes a police van pulledup behind me with two officers whowaited with me. Then a traffic servicescar arrived with a female and maleofficer. A white patrol van then broughtwater and assisted me. They were kind,helpful and patient and I am utterlygrateful for this service, so a big thankyou to everybody who assisted me. Thankyou to the best run city in South Africa.

Use the law to help victimsDomestic violence is an ever-increasingproblem. And it is not uncommon for do-mestic violence to escalate into even moreserious crimes like murder.It is for this reason that helping mecha-
nisms, like “restraining order”,” protec-tion order” and “domestic violence inter-dict”, have been introduced. It is availablefor free and should be used to protect thevictim.There are many categories of victims
who may apply for such legal help. It ismost often used in domestic relationships.But domestic relationships are not just re-stricted to people who are married. Theyinclude people who live or have lived to-gether, who are family members (a siblingor uncle may also be abusive), who have achild together, are in-laws or are dating.The court order tells anabuser to stop the
abuse and sets certain conditions prevent-ing the abuser from harassing or abusingthe victim again.Applying is free, unless an attorney is
used. When an attorney is involved, eachparty usually bears his own costs.The victim can apply at a court, but for
after-hour applications they must go to apolice station. However, not all courtswork the sameway – some only handle pro-tection order applications on certain daysand at certain times. It is best to find outat the police station.Once a protection order is granted, it is
valid until the victim withdraws it.Victims also have the right to bring a
criminal charge against their abusers inaddition if thedomestic abuse containedanelement of violence.The magistrate will first grant an inter-
im (temporary) protection order to stop theabuser from:. Committing domestic violence.. Asking another person’s help to commit
domestic violence.. Entering a shared residence or a speci-fied part thereof.. Abusing the victim financially.. Entering the victim’s residence (whichthe order may also keep secret).To ensure the victim has a strong case,
take note of the following.
Gather information and documentation. Keep written notes of all the dates, timesand types of domestic violence committed.. Get all the personal details of the abuser,including his home and work addresses,telephone numbers and identity number.. Ensure you have your identity docu-ment.
You don’t have to, but it will help if youalso have. Photos of the physical abuse.. A photo of the abuser.. Photos of the violence if any goods orproperty were damaged.. Papers showing who bought the items ifyour goods or property were damaged.. Letters confirming the fact that you havebeenabused.Youcanget letters fromsocialworkers, doctors, etc.. Statements from people who witnessedthe abuse.. A J88 form completed by a doctor of inju-ries (bruises, wounds, etc.).
Get helpAny member of the police must help the
victim in every way necessary.Remember abuse is not just physical but

Outcry over comparisonWhile I am outraged and saddened at thebrutal killings of two teenagers, 19-year-old Sinoxolo Mafevuka from Khayelitshaand 16-year-old Franziska Blöchliger fromKalk Bay, I am left bewildered by theinsensitivity of some sectors of ourcommunities highlighting the inequalityof police investigations and resources.
Both families have suffered equal lossand both communities and the nation areunderstandably devastated.
But I question and am saddened by theintention of illustrating the differences inresources afforded to each of the ghastlyincidents.
When our nation should be questioningthe national government in respect of
resourcing provinces equitably in polic-ing, education and human settlements,then wherein lies the blame for thedisparity?Crime and justice is colour blind and
so too is the bereavement after the loss ofa loved one. There is no cure or quick-fixfor sorrow or healing.Let us, for the sake of nation-building,
work on the symptomatic effects of crimeand the prevention thereof, by addressingthe issue of economic disproportion toeffect healing and reconciliation.Let us proactively tackle economic and

The public has been urged to report theirconcerns relating to health to the City of
Cape Town’s health directorate when itcomes to services and goods bought frombusinesses and retailers, including spazashops.
Siyabulela Mamkeli, Mayco member forhealth, visited a number of spaza shops inManenberg last week to ensure complianceand to raise awareness about the regula-tions and legislation that shop owners haveto abide by. The City’s health departmenthas received reports of unhygienic condi-tions and concerns have been raised aboutthe sale of expired goods in the past.
Check sell-by datesAccording to a statement released by the
City, in terms ofNational FoodRegulations,the expiry date on food product labels isthere to ensure that the product is still safeand has retained all its nutritional proper-ties. Perishables and goods kept in fridgesor freezers shouldnot be soldpast the sell-bydates. With regard to shelf goods, the itemcould still be safe to use, but the nutritional
value may diminish after the sell-by date.All businesses, including spaza shops, are
bound by the Health Act and food regula-tions aswell as theBusinessAct (for the saleof prepared foods and take-aways), zoningscheme, building regulations, fire safetylegislation and the Tobacco Control Act.
Environmental health practitioners aremandated to conduct visits to businesses atleast twice a year. But if problems are iden-tified or complaints are received then moreregular inspections are carried out until theproblem is resolved.
Clean shops“Spaza shops are a crucial part of our in-
formal economy and a lifeline to many ofour poorer communities in terms of accessto goods and services. It is therefore impor-tant that we ensure they are compliant andare aware of the pitfalls of selling goods thatare expired,” said Mamkeli.Storekeepers are bound by law to keep
their premises in an acceptable conditionand take measures to prevent pests, such asrodents.

The City’s Safety and Security Director-ate has finalised an agreement with theSheriffs of the Court to help execute war-rants of arrest for outstanding traffic fines.
Fourteen of the 17 sheriffs operating inthe city have signed up for the job.
“It has taken some time to get everyoneon the samepage, but now thatwehave, thisputs us in a position to drive up the trafficfine payment rate which is the only viablehope for improving road safety. More andmore traffic officers are meaningless if thefines they issue can just be ignored due toa frail criminal justice system,” says JPSmith,Maycomember for safety and securi-ty.
“Cape Townhas the lowest road death toll
of all the metros and the highest fine repay-ment rate. These two things are no coinci-dence. Ensuring that more people are heldaccountable ensures higher levels of com-pliance with road traffic legislation, whichreduces the road death toll. The advent ofthe sheriffs executing warrants will furtherhelp to make our roads safer and reducedeaths and injuries.”
Sheriffs will be paid for eachwarrant suc-cessfully executed by the receipt of all mon-ey owed, including the original fine and theadmission of guilt fine. The remunerationwill be calculated on a sliding scale and ona “no success, no pay” basis.
In the City’s 2013/14 financial year morethan 2m fines totalling more than R140mwere issued. For 2014/15 this amount in-creased to more than R220m after fineamounts were raised in 2014.
In the last quarter of last year, OperationReclaim, netted 17 648 motorists for out-standing warrants compared with 15 059during the same period in 2014.“The introduction of the sheriffs is an
added bonus. It is early days yet, but I amconfident that this arrangement will be afruitful one. I would advise motorists to set-tle their outstanding fines if they don’t wantthe sheriff to come knocking,” says Smith.
“I would also like to remind critics whobelieve that traffic enforcement is done inpursuit of revenue that none of the moneyfrom fines comes back to the directorate,but goes into the overall City budget. No bo-nuses are paid as a result of extra traffic fineincome and there are no financial incen-tives for our staff. Instead, everythingwe dois in pursuit of reducing thenumber of fatal-ities on our roads.”

held at the Strandfontein Civic Centre lastWednesday.The 32 teams participating were divided
into eight groups of four teams each.With major sponsors such as Coolag,
Strandfontein AFC has been able to not onlyhost the annual tournament, but improve onthe quality on offer for the young soccerplayers and their administrators.With other sponsors like Umbro and Jive,
the organisers believe this year’s tourna-ment will be the best and most exciting onestaged throughout its history.Previous winners have been academies
like Fish Hoek (2013), Ajax Cape Town (2014)and Old Mutual last year.The teams will be competing for R2000 in
the winners’ section.The championship team will also receive
a floating trophy, keepsake trophy and 20 in-dividual medals.
The runner-up team will receive R750 anda trophy. The losing semi-finalists will bothpocket R400 in prize money.In the plate section the crownwinnerswill
receive R500 and keepsake trophy while thelosing finalist will pocket R400.The shield section champions will be
awarded R350 and a keepsake trophy, withthe runners-up smiling to the bank withR300.Amongst the individual awards up for
grabs, the player of tournament will winR250 and receive a medal and trophy.Likewise the goalkeeper, top goal scorer,
manager of the tournament as well as teamof the fair play award will also win R250, amedal and trophy.The tournament kicks off on Saturday at
09:00 and ends at 18:00 each day, except forthe Sunday at about 16:00 with the prize giv-ing.

The Eagles schools u.11 boys and u.13 girlssoccer competition will be taking place atthe Heideveld Sports Complex on Thursdayfrom 10:00 to 15:00.The competition is organised by Crystal
Palace Football Club and Active Communi-ties Network South Africa.Each side can enter a squad of up to seven
players, with five playing at any one time.The team must be named before the tour-
nament.The competition will be in the form of a
league, followed by a semi-final to be playedby the two highest placed teams in each
league. The finals will be played at the Bar-clays Premier LeagueLive fan park event onSunday. The finalists will be given bus trav-el to the event in Camps Bay.Every player will receive a Crystal Palace

Falcons stop A’s double dreamJOSEPH PILLAY
Glenthorn A’s have missed theleague and knockout cup dou-ble as they were beaten 2-1 by
Falcons at Turfhall Stadium onSunday.
Steven Rodkin, Glenthorn headcoach, did get silverware on Satur-day when his side beat Falcons 8-1in the final game of the Cape TownSoftball Association’s superleague.
It was the fifth consecutive sea-son that A’s walked away with thesuper league honours.
In what must go down as one ofthe most exciting showdowns everwitnessed and much to the delightof the ballpark fans on Sunday, An-dre Alexander’s inspired Falconsside rose to the occasion to defendtheir knockout cup title in a tensefinal.
It was quite a remarkable gamein more ways than one with thematch-winning double play takingplace in the bottom of the sixthframe.
The play saw Falcons stoppingand preventing their opponentsfrom scoring the equalising run
and potentially set up the winningruns that would change the match.
The grandstand finish was set upby Carla Swanepoel, who broughtthe A’s back to being one down inthe fourth frame.
Scoreless fiveThen, following a scoreless fifth
frame from either side, A’s securedthree safe base hits by CourtneyStevens, Cindy Davids and DeidreSasman in the sixth inning.
With the bases loaded, A’sthreatened to score the much-need-ed runs to win the contest. Butnext-up batter Jean Bell fly foundWaseema Scott in the deep. Bell’sdeadly peg to shot stop fielder Ni-cole Alexander set up a furtherplay with catcher Samantha Jones.This led to a match-winning doubleplay in which Stevens was stoppedin her tracks just short of the homeplate.
Alexander’s three bagger in thesecond frame contributed to twoRBIs that enabled Kelly Julie andScott to cross the home plate safely.
They were able to hold onto their2-0 lead until Glenthorn reducedthe deficit to one – scoring Swane-
poel from the bat of Sasman’s two-base hit.
Lauren Mulder led the pitchingduel for Glenthorn. In her six in-nings spell she faced 26 batters,claimed six scalps and allowed twobase-on-balls while she gave up sixhits to Bettina Philips (2-3), Scott(1-2), Alexander, Jones and Julie(each 1-3).
Meanwhile, Falcons pitcherJones, in her six innings contest,conceded nine hits to the 26 Glen-thorn batters she faced.
She earned two strike-out vic-tims, allowed one base-on-ball andconceded hits to Alex Fortune, Sas-man (each 2-3), Cindy Davids (1-2),Lisa Erasmus, Astrid van Krester-en, Swanepoel and Stevens (each1-3).
“We were beaten and credit mustgo to Falcons who once again re-corded a victory in a breathtakingfinal,” said a disappointed Rodkin
after the match.Falcons coach Alexander had a
broad smile on his face.“It may have been sweet revenge
as to our league defeat on Saturdayand though I would have loved towon the league title, I’m extremelyhappy and proud of the team thatthey put up a brave and good fightthat was exceptionally excellentand good enough for us to defendour coveted knockout title,” hesaid.
