Lawrence suffered a fatal heart attack whilst training his under-9 Queens Park soc- cer team at the Queens Park Soccer Field on Friday 1 July. Lawrence was not only well known for per- formance on the field, but also played a major role in the upliftment of the local soccer club. The determined former coach was carried to his final resting place from his Upper Woodstock home on Saturday 2 July, with hundreds of people, including former coach- es, players and residents, attending the funeral. Lawrence’s wife, Fouzia, could not believe so many people knew her husband, and was shocked when she heard that between 700 and 800 people attended the fu- neral. “He was a wonderful hus- band, a great man and his whole life revolved around soccer. “I never attended any of his games, but could not be- lieve that many of the peo- ple at the funeral he met through soccer,” says the soft spoken Fouzia. Lawrence trained a number of high-profile players such as Vasco Da Gama player, Brad- ley August, former Porto and Bafana Bafana striker, Benny McCarthy, current Maritz- burg United captain, Fadlu Davids, former Orlando Pirates and now Golden Arrows star, Katlegho Mashego and Maccabi Haifa in Isra- el star, Bevan Fransman. Lawrence’s son, Ezzat, boasted about his fa- ther’s achievements, saying everything about his life revolved around soccer, whether training players one-on-one or ensuring that the senior and junior teams had training grids. “It’s very hard to describe my father, but he was very community-orientated and al- ways cared about developing soccer in the community,” says Ezzat. According to Ezzat, Lawrence was also heavily involved in coaching street children from The Haven Night Shelter in Woodstock. “He always made time for people who really needed it, and he was simple and straight for- ward, but believed in practising what you preached,” says Ezzat. Lawrence started his playing career for Pretoria Sundowns, now known as Mamelodi Sundowns, at the age of 17. He then moved to Orlando Pirates, where he played amongst the likes of Scara Sono, Kaizer Motaung and many other greats from that era. He also played a major role in assisting his friend, Motaung, in forming the Kaizer 11, known today as Kaizer Chiefs. Later in his career, Law- rence moved to Cape Town Spurs, known now as Ajax Cape Town. Amongst his list of achievements, Lawrence coached the “dominant” Hellenic junior teams from the mid 90s to win five Bay- hill Metropolitan Premier Cup titles. “In one day he would do so many things – in the morning a coach, the after- noon an administrator and most importantly in the evening, my dad,” says Ezzat. Rashaad Marinos, former coach and “arch rival” to Lawrence, was saddened by the news, and still couldn’t believe his “old pal” was gone. “We had a great relationship off the field, always phoning each other for advice and stuff, but on the field, there was a great rival- ry, which we both took very seriously,” says Marinos. He described Lawrence as being “hard- working, discipline crazy and a fitness freak who carried a big heart and always cared about others”. Speaking to People’s Post, Marinos strug- gled to hold back the tears. “He was very dedicated to his sport, and that is how many people will remember him. “He tried to change the face of that soccer club singlehandedly, and I really think he suc- ceeded in making these boys believe they can be stars on and off the field.” Former ward councillor and local resident, Cedric Thomas, said about Lawrence’s pass- ing: “That community has lost a sporting icon and soccer legend, who has done so much for the community and will be remembered for that.” Thomas said Lawrence played a major role in youth development in the area, and also as- sisted in changing the image of the local soc- cer club. “We have lost an important person, especially where communication between the club and council is concerned. We are all deeply saddened by this,” says Thomas. Queens Park Soccer Club president, Adam Al- exander, explained that when the news ar- rived, youngsters cried “continuously”. “It was a great honour to have a man like Mr Lawrence at the club. “Everything he did was just brilliant,” says Alexander. The Queen’s Park soccer club hopes to continue the legacy left by Lawrence, with the establishment of the Yazeed Football Academy for the youth. A race tothe deathTAURIQ HASSEN

PETER LANDMAN, from Ottery, livesbehind Ottery Road, a street notori-ous for drag racing.

Every weekend he has to endure thesound of “hundreds of roaring engineswith underage drivers” performing“doughnuts”, “stand stills”, and “soundoffs” while racing from one robot to thenext.

“I don’t think these youngsters knowhow dangerous illegal drag racing canbe. If only they focused all that energy onsomething positive, it could do wondersfor their lives,” says Landman.

Landman says he would be delightedif the racers were taken to a formal dragstrip.

There is, in fact, an alternative to ille-gal street racing in Cape Town: theStreet2Strip events at theKillarneyRace-track.

An initiative by the Western ProvinceMotor Club first launched in 1998, theseare becoming increasingly popular withstreet racing enthusiasts attracted by thesound of roaring engines and souped-upcars.

Event manager, Paul Simon, says theevent is aimed entirely at street racers, and a competition licence is not requiredto participate.

As is the case in a traditional race, tim-ing lights are activated, butno results areposted and prizes are not handed out atthe end of every event.

He says all racers are required to signan indemnity form before their cars arechecked for safety.

“Only once their cars are deemed to besafe will they be allowed to enter thetrack and take part in the race,” says Si-mon.

All drivers are required to wear a hel-met during the race, and without “essen-tial safety requirements”, they are not al-lowed to take part.

“We provide a safe environment forracing to take place, and all our races aredone formally, not forgetting the safetyaspects of the race,” Simon says.

Merle Lourens, chief inspector forcommunication, education and trainingat the City of Cape Town’s Traffic Servic-es, doesnot believe theStreet2Strip eventwill take the focus off illegal drag racing.

“I can’t agree, because people maywant to take part in an off-street race butstill prefer the adrenaline high of doingthe same thing on the street.”

Traffic services are depending heavily

on the Ghost Squad, which deals specifi-cally deals with drag racing complaints.

Yaasien Franks is paralysed from theneck down after losing control of his caron the M3 three years ago

Franks was in an illegal drag racewhen his car swerved suddenly andsmashed into a tree on the side of theroad.

“I must just be thankful to be alive, butI am now paying the price for my stupidi-ty. If only I had used the brain God gaveme at that time I could have been walk-ing, but now I am frustrated and stuckto this wheelchair,” says Franks.

A former drag racer known to People’sPost as Waleed from Salt River, lost his19-year-old baby brother when he wasflung from a car during in an illegal racein Strandfontein last year.

Waleed used the M3 Highway and Ot-tery Road for his racing needs: “That wasdangerous and I feel sorry that I only re-alised that now. It was all about racingfor me, and I didn’t care what you driveor how fast you were going, to me it wasall about the thrill of being behind thatwheel,” says Waleed.

After losing his brother, Waleedpacked up his illegal street racing gameand headed for the formal track, “to hon-our my baby brother”.

“My brother was more interested incars than I was, and he loved fast cars, but the day he died really made me real-ise that I’m living dangerously andputting many other innocent people indanger,” says Waleed.

Franks has a message for drivers “cur-rently abusing” the road rules and regu-lations: “If you are reading this, you areprobably saying how stupid I am and thatI maybe could not drive, which is true, because if I called myself a real driver Iwould never have raced that evening, be-cause it’s not my own life I am playingwith, but many other road users’ aswell.”

He regularly visits the racetrack, espe-cially Street2Strip events, where he isnow confined to the stands, which he be-lieves is the “safest seat in the house”.

For further information on theStreet2Strip events, visit the websitewww.street2strip.co.za or contact Killar-ney Racetrack on (021) 557-1639.

A record of every pupilANDRE BAKKES

WYNBERG POLICE and anon-governmental organi-

sation (NGO) called the Pink La-dies want to implement a systemof getting photos, fingerprintsand a strand of hair from everyprimary school pupil in a data-base.

They say this record will assistthem with vital information, suchas DNA, if a child goes missing.

The question, however, is whowill pay for and be in charge of thedatabase.

Some schools in the WesternCape have nonetheless gone aheadand acquired the data of pupilswhere parents have given permis-sion.

But, according to Dessie Rechner, the founder and director of the PinkLadies, these schools have jumpedthe gun.

“If you do one school then youmust do all the schools,” she rea-sons. This NGO comprises an inde-pendent group of volunteers whoreunite missing and endangeredchildren and loved ones with theirfamilies.

The group consists mostly ofwomen – full-time workers andhousewives – all united by empathyand compassion.

They assist the police at ground-level to findmissing children, asRe-chner explains: “I’m a crime fight-er. We jack up the flyers and revisethe police docket.”

The group has been very involvedwith various cases, one of them be-ing the abduction of a six-year-oldboy from a school in Wynberg in

May, and his subsequent rescuefrom his kidnappers in PlettenbergBay. It was only when one of Rechn-er’s flyers about the missing childended up on a desk in George thata breakthrough was made. “Ourmotivation is speed,” says Rechner

When asked about the possiblefingerprinting of primary schoolchildren, she responds: “We arestill ironing out some of the details, like who will be in charge of safe-keeping.” According to her it wouldbe best if the police themselvesmaintain the database, but appar-ently they are “not legally allowed”.

“If the schools keep the informa-tion, then the departments of Edu-cation and Social Developmentwould have to come on board.”

A southern suburbs school and

another in Brackenfell has goneahead and fingerprinted the pupils, with the parents themselves keep-ing the information gathered.

A strand of hair would be sealedin a plastic bag, and if DNA is everneeded of the child they would beable to supply it to law-enforcers.

Wynberg police spokesperson,Captain Andre Venter, says it is agreat idea, and they have alreadyapproached a few schools in theirprecinct. “We are still waiting forthe schools’ and parents’ approval, though,” adds Venter.

He concludes by saying that theyare very curious about whether thepublic would accept such a propos-al. People’s Post spoke to readers, and they all said that the systemshould be implemented.

Education is key to prevent more sufferingTERESA FISCHER

THE Cape of Good Hope (CoGH)SPCA is still trying to trace aMitchell’s Plain family whose pitbulls recently gave birth to a lit-ter of 10 puppies, and who do notwant to sell the dogs.

The Abrahams family was fea-tured in a daily newspaper article, with photographs of them togetherwith the puppies (“Threats afterfamily refuse to sell pit bull pups”,Cape Times, Wednesday 29 June.)

According to the article, theyhave been threatened by membersof the community for refusing tosell the puppies. The family saysthey fear the dogs will be used indog fights if they sell them.

CoGH SPCA spokesperson,Lamees Martin, says the organisa-tion is still awaiting contact detailsof the family

Martin says: “We would also liketo discuss and educate the familyabout sterilisation to prevent anyfurther litters of puppies beingborn.”

She says animals would not beconfiscated unless they are neglect-ed or abused in terms of the AnimalProtection Act.

“The key is education and infor-mation,” says Martin, who addsthat with the new animal bylawsthat are being finalised, it will be-come unlawful for people who arenot registered breeders to continueto allow litters to be born.

“There are so many dogs outthere, in shelters, just waiting pa-tiently for loving homes,” she says, adding that it is irresponsible to al-low animals to breed indiscrimi-

nately. She also appeals to membersof the public to come forward andadvise them of any dog fighting ac-tivities “so that we may investigateand take action wherever neces-sary”.

Meanwhile, emotions ran highlast week in Sweet Home Farm, aninformal settlement near Philippi, after a three-year-oldboy,wasalleg-edly pulled from his home andkilled by a pack of dogs.

Angry residents retaliated bystoning and beating to death twodogs thought to be involved in theattack – although the CoGH SPCAsays post mortems carried out thedogs revealed only traces of rice, chicken and beetroot in the dogs’stomach contents.

According to the CoGH SPCA thedogs choked to death on their ownblood following the beatings andkickings.

Together with the Animal RescueOrganisation (ARO) and AnimalWelfare Philippi, the SPCA has sofar removed 156 dogs, which weresurrendered by their owners.

Efforts to humanely remove un-wanted animals and encourageowners to admit their dogs for steri-lisation will continue.

The CoGH SPCA says the commu-nity’s support would be greatly ap-preciated.

It says: “Not only to help keep itsinspectors in the field, but if a con-tribution pays for a dog to be steri-lised, you’ll be playing a very realpart in turning this tragic situationaround.”

According to the organisation, despite extreme poverty, manyhouseholds in the community haveup to 10 dogs, which are undernour-

ished, unsterilised and lack humanaffection and care.

Many of the dogs lead a feral ex-istence, roaming the township scav-enging for food.

“We think that neglect and star-vation may be the reason the dogsattacked, although we are stillawaiting the results of the police in-vestigation,” said SPCA inspector,Moyo Ndukwana.

At a community meeting on Sat-urday, the SPCA and the City ofCape Town’s Law Enforcement de-partment managed to convince res-idents to restrict the number ofdogs per household to two; to collarand identify each owned animal;and to allow their animals to besterilised by the animal welfaregroups involved in the crisis.

Allround applausefor neighbourhoodwatchesMELISSA LE ROUX

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCHES, inconjunction with the SAPS, play a

crucial role in reducing the crime rate incommunities.

This is according to Phillip Bam, chairper-son of the Lotus River, Ottery, Grassy ParkResidents’ Association (Logra), who saysthat the crime rate in these areas has de-creased over the past few months due to thevisibility of neighbourhood watches in thecommunities.

There are 13 neighbourhood watcheswithin the Grassy Park precinct, compris-ing about 200 members.

“Neighbourhood watches in the differentcommunities definitely play a significantrole in bringing down crime in the areas.

“Members of the neighbourhood watchesare the eyes and ears of the police, and havebrought down crime as a result of neigh-bourhood patrols,” says Bam, who is also amember of the Grassy Park Community Po-licing Forum (CPF).

Members of the various neighbourhoodwatches in the Grassy Park precinct will beundergoing a training course on Saturday 6August. Organised by the City of Cape Townand initiated by Fairways NeighbourhoodWatch, members will be taught skills to fur-ther help them reduce the crime rate.

The neighbourhood watch members willbe taught how to deal with citizens’ arrests, and skilled to deal with security and protec-tion.

At a mass neighbourhood watch meetingin March, members expressed their concernabout not getting enough support from the

police, which People’s Post reported on –(“Neighbourhood watches ask for supportand training”, 15 March).

The members all agreed that they neededmore help and support from police officersin order for the neighbourhood watches todo a satisfactory job.

Acting station commander at Grassy ParkPolice Station, Colonel Christian Esau, saysneighbourhood watches are doing a “greatjob”.

“The members of the neighbourhoodwatches are very active in the community, and it shows when looking at the statisticsof the housebreakings – which have comedown in the various area,” he says.

Fuad Titus, chairperson of the CentralPark Neighbourhood Watch, which coversareas from Strandfontein, Klip and De Wetroads, says the 27-member team has hadquite a few successes.

“Drug arrests and the closing down of twoshebeens in the area fall within the success-es of the neighbourhood watch,” he says.

The neighbourhood watch, made up most-ly of women, generally patrol on weekends. However, members are now also venturingout on patrol during the week.

“(They are) women and mothers spendingtheir evenings safe-guarding their commu-nity (and) are doing a fantastic job – it’s greatto see that sort of encouragement,” saysBam. The chairperson of the Grassy ParkCPF, Yaseen Meyer, agrees with Bam aboutthe “fantastic job” the neighbourhoodwatches are doing.

He also feels that the women of the CentralPark Neighbourhood Watch deserve recog-nition for becoming involved in keepingtheir community safe.

Online extra maths for matricsSCHOOL learners spend their entireschool careers working up to one finalgoal: passing their matric exams and en-suring a better chance at tertiary educa-tion and work in future.

In recent years the matric maths passrate has been frightening, with only 30%of the candidates achieving pass markshigh enough for university entrance.

Cape Town maths and science teacher,Paul Carter, who has taught at prestigiousschools such as Bishops and RondeboschBoys’ High, has teamed up with Cam-bridge University Press and online educa-tion company, GetSmarter, to create theCambridge University Press Grade 12Maths Course, which prepares learnersfor their final exams. The 12-week, fully-supported online extra maths course giveslearners the opportunity to revise thecomplete matric maths syllabus in timefor the final exams, and learn the practicalskills to pass exams and achieve highergrades. It also allows for parents to be kept

up to date on children’s progress by email-ing parents detailed weekly reports.

The course is clearly structured, moni-tored and highly supported by both Carterand an administrator. Learners can testtheir knowledge and get prompt answersto their questions on the discussion fo-rums. As the course is presented entirelyonline through GetSmarter’s user-friend-ly online learning platform, learners canstudy whenever they can and whereverthey are, fitting revision into a dailyschedule without the disruption and hid-den costs associated with tutors, after-school classes and travelling.

Achieving an excellent mark in matricmaths is no easy feat, but learning to workhard in school will build a strong workethic that will be invaluable in universityor working life. EXCLUDING MATTRESS

Centre will sharpen surgeons’ skillsWESTERN CAPE MEC for Health,

Theuns Botha, says the training ofsurgeons at Karl Storz Surgical SkillsTraining Centre will have far-reaching ef-fects.

Botha spoke at the opening of the centre at

the Red Cross War Memorial Children’sHospital on Wednesday 22 June.

Eighteen months ago, the Children’sHospital Trust embarked on a campaign toraise almost R14 million for the centre.

African and local surgeons and physi-cians will be able to train in endoscopic

surgery and other clinically important skills.Botha says endoscopy and laparoscopy are min-imally invasive surgical techniques, makingfor much greater patient comfort and swifter re-covery. The risk of infection is considerablyless.

He adds that shorter hospital stays as a resultof endoscopic procedures will greatly enhancethe Health Department’s capacity.

The cost of specialised training in highly en-doscopic skills will be substantially reduced be-cause local surgeons will not have to travel andstudy overseas, and surgeons currently work-ing in other hospitals all over the world will beable to access the equipment offered by this hos-pital. Before this there were no dedicated endo-scopic training centres in the whole of sub-Sa-haran Africa.

High-quality video and digital communica-tion systems will enable surgeons to displayall aspects of a procedure to students, allow-ing for live viewing, teaching and training.

The training centre will be used for thosetraining in specialities other than surgery. There will be workshops for urologists andanaesthetists, and physicians will learn lum-bar punctures and venous access techniques.

Donations came from more than 25 donorcompanies and donors, who are acknowl-edged on the plaques in the seminar room andboardroom.

Equipment worth R10 million was pledgedby Karl Storz, the German manufacturer ofendoscopic equipment, and with that thiscompany also obtained the naming rights tothe centre.

HIGH TECH: Professor Alp Numanoglu on the right (paediatric surgeon at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital), demonstrates how the endoscopic instrument with camera and light attached will be inserted into a small incision in the patient, while the image is reflected ona highdefinition monitor for the surgeon to view. Onlookers from left are Western Cape HealthMEC, Theuns Botha (left), with Kenneth Marcus of Karl Storz Endoscopy (major donor of equipment) behind him, Dr Lungi Linda (CEO of the Hospital) and Louise Driver (CEO of the Children’sHospital Trust). Feel like naming your own hood?TAURIQ HASSEN

A “NAME YOUR HOOD” initiative waslaunched at the Freeworld Design

Centre inCapeTownlastweek, whichwillsee Cape Town being “reclaimed” by itsresidents.

Through the project, members of the publicwill be given the opportunity to suggestnames for their respective areas, which couldmake navigating around Cape Town muchless complicated.

People’sPost attended the launchonThurs-day 30 June, where a few high profile namesincluding television presenter, Colin Mossand Just Jinger’s lead singer, Ard Matthews, were among the crowd.

Bruce Good, managing director for “NameYour Hood”, was excited to seethe project finally being un-veiled to the public.

“This is an opportunity forCapetonians to reclaim theirCity, and through the project, make moving through CapeTown so much easier.”

He says names such as CityBowl, Woodstock, Observato-ry and Oranjezicht will not beremoved, but the suggestednames will basically become a“trend amongst the communi-ty”.

“People will be able to say that their socialclub or hangout spots are in these neighbour-hoods and it will make them proud, becauseit works in many other countries across theglobe,” says Good.

Good recently returned from New York, where he did some research on the projectand felt that a “legible city” needs to be creat-ed.

The project drew inspiration from coun-tries such as New York which has neighbour-hood’s such as “Tribeca”, “Soho” and “TheBronx”. London has “Mayfair” and Sydney

has “Bondi”.Mokena Makeka, managing director for

Makeka Design Lab, was placed in charge ofdividing the map of the Cape Town area into “distinctive neighbourhoods”.

“This is an opportunity for the public tocreate a space of their own, something theycan refer to as their neighbourhood or hoodlike in America,” says Makeka.

The process was rolled out through theCentral Business District yesterday (Monday4 July) when “Name Your Hood” handed outflyers to shops, pedestrians, train and bus sta-tions.

According to Good, this is an attempt togenerate as much interest in the project, butstressed that areas names will stay the same. The project basically allows the communityto provide their own personal names that per-

fectly identify their areas.“The original names will re-

main, but with the names pro-vided by the public, it will givethe public the opportunity tocreate their own spaces, whichis really exciting,” says Good.

Mariette du Toit-Helmbold,CEO of Cape Town Tourism, wasproud to be a part of this “excit-ing” project, saying: “This issomething new for Cape Town, and we must take full advantageof this opportunity, because itreshapes our communities and

gives it a sense of personal ownership, some-thing the public can say they are proudly apart of.”

A project like “Name Your Hood” also haseconomic benefits in the long run, with busi-nesses clearly being identified in these specif-ics “hoods”, she says.

“This is a chance for Cape Town to get in-volved in creating a space they can truly en-joy, so we would encouraged people to jumpon board and enjoy this project,” says Helm-bold.

The “Name Your Hood” campaign aims to

roll out into all the “hoods” within the sightofTableMountainover time, butwill be start-ing with only three “hoods” at a time.

After a three-week naming period via Inter-net registrations, manual application formson the street and also SMSes, all hood namesuggestions will be put before a panel of ar-chitects, planners, musicians, local celebri-ties and historians.

Good explained that the panel will then cre-ate a short-list of the best names chosen foreach hood, which will then be advertised tothe public, who will be allowed to “NameYour Hood” through a public voting system.

“We cannot really say this project willwork, and we don’t know whether or not the

names will die out or fade away, but what wedo know is that we are taking this opportuni-ty with both hands and dedicated ourselvesto creating a better City to live in,” Good con-cluded.

To find out more about the “Name YourHood” campaign, visit www.nameyour-hood.co.za, or look out for entry forms on thestreet.

Lavender Hill goes through a purple patchANDRE BAKKES

A GROUP of passionate and motivated in-dividuals are aiming to turn Lavender

Hill into a lavender wonderland.

Their effort to populate the suburb with purple, white and blue lavender plants is known simplyas the Lavender Hill Project, but they are morethan just glorified gardeners – they are the mes-sengers of goodwill, hope and pride.

Project manager, Marcelle van Zyl, sums it upwhen she says that the idea is to transform thearea and turn it into something beautiful, some-thing that can uplift the community and instilpride in them.

The flowers bloom for four months a year, andVan Zyl hopes that tourists will come from afarto marvel at the colourful spectacle.

The project’s aim is to create an “urban farm”and eventually sell lavender-related productssuch as tea and confetti, with a large chunk of theprofit going back into the community.

The true value of the project doesn’t lie in thedestination, however, but in the journey.

It has only been two months and already theidea has left an imprint of benevolence in manyhearts.

Van Zyl elaborates: “In the beginning it wasquite a struggle, since people didn’t like it whenothers come and change the place.

“Now they come into the nursery to see forthemselves what’s going on in there. They wantto learn more about the cuttings, and some takeplants home with them.”

The project’s first nursery was set up at ZerildaPark Primary School in May, and already con-tains about 12 000 tiny lavender shrubs – all des-tined for great things.

People from all walks of life have donated cut-tings – leafy twigs – of these plants.

These alone can propagate new lavender plants.Van Zyl continues fervently: “Now more

schools are getting excited about the project andthey all want nurseries!

“Soon the whole of Lavender Hill will becomean art piece. If one looks from above then therewill be patches of purple everywhere.”

Her conviction is already shared by thenursery manager and master gardener, Vuye-sile Dyolotana, cuttings collector Daniel Sher-wood, and the man with all the local contacts, assistant manager Baden Philander.

The project was the brainchild of RaymondAckerman School of Entrepreneurship lectur-er, Charles Maisel.

He once asked a student from Lavender Hillwhether there was any lavender in the area, and the student didn’t even know what laven-der was.

As a result, Maisel envisioned an urbanfarm containing one million lavender bushes, and Van Zyl decided to turn this into a reality.

They have since received coverage on tworadio stations – Cape Talk and KFM 94.5 – andCNN Worldwide is also following up on theirprogress.

One of the only challenges her team has hadto overcome was the recent vandalism of theirnursery, which resulted in the loss of over2 000 plants.

Sad though it was, it has also opened manydoors for the project, since more people be-came aware of their mission.

The group, and everyone who wanted tohelp, have been painting lavender plants onwalls adjacent to major routes for the past twoweeks.

One was painted for each of the little plantsthat died as a result of the vandalism.

Van Zyl concludes: “I would like to thankeveryone who has been so supportive thus far.It is only through your support that we canmake this project happen.

“To everyone who I have not yet been ableto collect donations and cuttings from, pleasedo not forget about us.”

Anyone who wants to help can contact Jack-ie on 084 995 5426.

Planning to study further is one of the most important choices you can make. To assist you in making

the right decision, here are some things we think you need to know about the Tertiary School in

Business Administration (TSiBA):

· TSiBA means ‘to leap’ in isiXhosa and that’s exactly what we aim to do. Obtaining a university degree is

the best way to jump ahead in life. Through our excellent relationships with our corporate partners and

sponsors, we can help you do just that.

· TSiBA is focused only on business, with a strong emphasis on entrepreneurship and leadership. So if

you want to start (or are already running) your own business or be a CEO one day, TSiBA is for you.

· At our Cape Town campus we offer a one year Foundation Certificate in Business Adminstration and an

accredited full time Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree in Entrepreneurial Leadership.

· We opened our doors in 2005 and our first students graduated in 2008. They are now working in blue

chip companies that have international presence such as JP Morgan, Old Mutual, Oceana Group Ltd,

Novartis and British American Tobacco.

To find out more about how TSiBA can help you to jump ahead come visit our campus on our Open Day.

Nou as dit klaar so gaan, waar los dit diekleurlinge?

Mampane as possible CEOWHY is the SABC and government overlook-ing Charlotte Mampane as possible GroupCEO of the SABC?

The SABC’s decision not to extend formeracting Group CEO, Robin Nicolson’s con-tract, should be welcomed and commended.

However, the SABC and government’s de-cision to continue to overlook or ignore thecontribution that women have made at thepublic broadcaster, even during the corpo-ration’s darkest hours when it was facedwith insolvency, is a real disgrace.

The SABC has always had strong and ca-pable women in its ranks, such as MsMpumelelo Nzimande, former head of hu-man resources, Ms Pinky Maholi, currentgroup CEO at Telkom, Ms Judy Nokwedi, former head of SABC Public BroadcastingServices and Ms Charlotte Mampane, whoserved the SABC in various executive posi-tions, including Group Executive Radio,Head of Regions, acting Chief Operating Of-ficer and currently as Head of SpecialProjects.

Charlotte Mampane is the only female re-maining in the SABC’s top management

structure, and she has been there longerthan anyone else I can remember!

The SABC board, the ministry of commu-nications, the parliamentary committee oncommunications and all other stakeholdersshould be honest and tell the public why itis refusing to elevate dynamic women likeCharlotte into leadership positions at theSABC.

She is probably the best person to run thecorporation, because of her wealth of experi-ence. Here you have a woman with all thequalities needed to take our public broad-caster forward – qualification, experienceand an absolute fighter in the fight againstnepotism and corruption.

If government is serious about returningthe SABC to its former glory as a leader inits field on the continent and elsewhere, itshould do the right thing and give womentheir rightful place in every sector of society, including broadcasting.

We should stop paying lip service to wom-an empowerment.ROZARIO BROWNMitchell’s Plain

Street crime preventionAS we all are aware, the police have divid-ed the areas of each police precinct intosectors, with dedicated police patrol staffand vehicles.

If you do an assessment, you find thatfew vehicles have to police many peopleand properties, and you come to realisethat you have to put measures in place tomake you and your property safe as bestyou can, so that you do not become a sta-tistic or a victim of crime.

We decided that in our road we were go-ing to establishaStreetCrimePreventionCommittee, to see how we in our streetcanassist eachother in crimeprevention.

I went onto the Internet and discov-ered that street committees are not new,and I discovered a simple concept titled“How to set up your own street commit-tee”, by Richard Noyce, of Berea, Johan-nesburg.

All the neighbours in our street re-ceived a written invitation to attend ameeting at my home, and 15 responded, with two apologies – but stating thatwhatever was decided they were 100% be-hind us.

I also invited the sector manager of ourarea, and on the day of our meeting hewas there.

At the meeting our sector manager,Warrant Officer Gray, gave us very truth-ful information on our policing strengthand crimes affecting our area.

He also expressed his gratitude to-wards so many people from our street inattendance and the eagerness to becomecrime preventers in our street.

After his departure, we discussed ouroperational plan for our street.

Our operational plan is very simple, and has the phone numbers of most of theneighbours, and has dedicated telephonenumbers of neighbours who are at home

and who could be contacted in the eventback-up is needed while waiting for thepolice.

The document has our police station’sdirect number, as well as the cellphonenumber of our dedicated sector patrol ve-hicle, radio control emergency numbers, and for extreme back-up, the nearestneighbouring police station with the cellnumber of that station sector vehicle clos-est to our sector.

In the event of a neighbour being awayfrom his/her home, they can decidewhich neighbours to inform to keep aneye on their premises.

In the event of a suspicious noise in aneighbour’s property or when a dog isbarking excessively, they will phone aneighbour on the list who will informothers to go and investigate.

Advantages: Back-up until SAPS ar-rives, looking out for each other and eachother’s property, being informed of thelatest crime trends and current alerts af-fecting our area.

As a street committee, we can try todrastically decrease the incidence ofcrime in our street and increase personalsafety.

We have the name and telephonenumber of our ward councillor on theplan, so that he can be contacted for is-sues that can be environmentallychanged for our safety, such as a requestfor speed humps, or have trees cut downthat give cover to criminals.

We have elected a chair and vice chair, and we intend meeting once a month; westress the fact that in our operational con-cept we are not vigilantes and we oper-ate within the ambit and borders of thelaw.KEITH AA BLAKEOttery

Countdown to youth showpieceTASMIN CUPIDO

IT’S that time of the year again – thelaunch and draw of the 2011 Engen

Knockout Challenge will be held at Ath-lone Stadium tomorrow.

This year’s tournament, organised by En-gen Santos FC and presented by Engen, willbe the eighth of its kind, and is scheduledto be played at the Stephen Reagon SportsComplex in Westridge the weekend of 29 –31 July. Sixteen of Cape Town’s top under-17teams will compete to win the champion-ship, of which People’s Post is the mediasponsor.

Gilbert Kruger, the coordinator of theevent, says they are excited for the tourna-ment to finally kick-off after several monthsof planning and preparations. “We are tre-mendously excited to get everything going– so much hard work and planning went intothis year’s tournament,” he says.

“With the assistance of Engen Santos FCand Engen we have managed to get every-thing in place, and we are certain that, come

the end of the month, everyone will enjoy aweekend of fun-filled, exhilarating football. We also know that we will find new, up-and-coming stars who may eventually move onto becoming the best.”

Kruger also disclosed the teams are in con-tention for a R10 000 cash prize at the annualevent, which was won by Cape United AFClast year.

Engen Santos FC (2005 and 2006) and AjaxCapeTown (2008 and2009) have eachwon thetitle twice. Provincial Academy also tri-umphed on debut in 2007.

“This year sees several teams makingtheir debut in the tournament and we knowthat they will bring a different blend and di-mension to it all,” Kruger says.

After 100 teams played-off to compete inthe converted tournament, the followingteams have cemented their place: Ajax CapeTown; African Soccer Development (CapeUnited AFC); Bayhill United; Blue Downs;Bothasig;Edgemead;EngenSantosFC;CapeTown FC; Invincible Cravenby; Juventus;Kensington; Masidlale; Old Mutual; OriganSpurs; Trinatarians and Vasco Da Gama.
