Michael Jacobs, the Mitchell’s Plain Community Police Forum cluster chairperson, says that the Illegal Gatherings Act dictates that for any legal protest action to take place “the police has an obli- gation to ensure that participants and the commu- nity are protected”. “The CPF respects the right of any organisation who wants to hold peaceful protests,” Jacobs says. Shahib says the organisation was contacted by representatives from a local church which ap- pealed to the movement to assist in ending the local drug trade. “It took a year to get permission to hold a legal march across the greater Cape Town area. Each time we applied we were denied. If the police can show us what they did in the area for the last year and the reason we were denied, we would be sat- isfied. “However, things in the community has gone from bad to worse. Eastridge is plagued with drugs and gangs and its sad that our young girls are sell- ing their bodies for a fix of tik,” he claims. He asserts that politicians’ promises of remov- ing drug dealers from council homes have also not materialised. Ward councillor Solomon Philander, who was also at the march, declined to comment on how many of the City of Cape Town’s tenants were un- der investigation for using council rental units for illegal activities. They sell drugs and when the police vans are around they discard it. Something needs to be done about the situation as it’s getting out of hand. “The community is desperate to get rid of the drug dealers and feel that Pagad would be able to make a difference,” she says. Excelling in the sales arena in to-day’s highly challenging economictimes is a tall order. A double-dip reces-sion has seen many businesses foldand crippled others to within a whiskerof extinction.
Millions of over-indebted South Afri-cans have had to place themselves un-der debt review. Retaining clients versus establishedcompetition can only be as a result ofdelivering consistent quality serviceand applying innovative sales strate-gies. On the topic of business, I attend-ed Islamic Relief South Africa’s inaugu-ral business breakfast last week andwas heartened by the strong entrepre-neurial spirit that exists in our communi-ties. I was inspired by the determinationand honesty with which small business-men and women keep going and howthey are not dependent on formal em-ployment. I had a taste of entrepre-neurship during my freelance and self-employed years between journalism. Isold everything from clothing and food
to loo paper and a transport service. Iknow how difficult it is to bring home afew rands, let alone hundreds and thou-sands. One of my clients, who had notpaid several of his suppliers, eventuallyhad to face the music for his unethicaldealings. I was one of a few whom hehad owed zero because I stood up tohim and demanded cash every time myvehicle transported his supplies.
You have to be tough in business, es-pecially when you’re self-employedand have no protection other than yourinstinct. You bag the profits; so too therisk. You cannot undersell yourself.Factor in your labour, time, petrol costs,electricity, phone bill and every otherrunning expense before setting a pricethat’s too low. It must be worth yourwhile; you’re in it for the money!
On a lighter note, I’ve started run-ning. After 17 years, I’ve overcome my
fear of running, all thanks to the Lionof Africa/Itheko Sport Athletic Club’shead coach Farouk Meyer.
Coach extraordinaire, Farouk tookme, my colleague Edwin Scott andabout a dozen other novicerunners on the road and upthe hill last week – literally.None of us would have be-lieved at the outset of ourrun that we could finish a5km run complete with asteep hill. I made somefriends along the way. Likeme, some of the other wom-en were anxious about run-ning. I had images of collapsing alongthe road and having to be embarrass-ingly carried back to base camp. I’ve al-ways been a runner, until I was told bythe coach of a walk/run programme thatI’m a walker. And that’s what I believed,
but no longer. It’s early days yet, butmy challenge is clear: train for the nextsix weeks to complete a 10km run inthe Jive Slave Route Challenge on 27May. The club caters for beginners to
elite runners and trains twicea week at Rhodes HighSchool in Mowbray, meetingat 18:00 on Tuesday or Thurs-days.
I’m bracing myself for mynext run tomorrow. Wish meluck.

THE man accused of murdering his two-year-old niece in Heinz Park will spendthe next week behind bars.
The 38-year-old was arrested on Saturday afterthe child’s body was found wrapped in a blanketunder the suspect’s bed in his shack in Lilly Street.
Warrant Officer November Filander, thespokesperson for the provincial police, says theman apparently sent the toddler’s 12-year-old sis-ter to the shop while the baby was asleep.
“The mother went to a funeral and when shereturned, the uncle and the girl were missing. Theythen launched a search for them,” says Filander.
The officers forced open the door of the uncle’sshack, situated on the same property.
“A blood-stained knife was found next to thebody of the toddler.
“Shortly thereafter the police arrested the unclefor the murder. Preliminary investigation indicatesthat the girl was not raped and that the cause ofdeath was due to stabbing,” he says.
The suspect appeared in the Athlone Magis-trates’ Court yesterday (Monday) and the casewas postponed to Monday 23 April for a formalbail application.
Weekend confiscations:Over the weekend 50 people were arrested in
the Mitchell’s Plain cluster. During these opera-tions 40 units of heroin, 49 packets of tik, 13,57litres of liquor, 40 dagga stoppe, six-and-a-halfmandrax tablets and a live 357 Magnum roundwere found.
On Friday officers responded to a tip-off in Al-pha Street, Beacon Valley, which led to the arrestof a 29-year-old man.
The suspect was in possession of 24 units ofheroin.
“A 35-year-old man was arrested in 4th Avenue,Eastridge, for selling liquor without a licence,”says Captain Mugelaine Van der Vendt, spokes-person for Mitchell’s Plain police.
On Saturday at 14:30 the police spotted a suspi-cious-looking man in Olive Street, Eastridge. Hewas searched and officers confiscated eight dag-ga stoppe.
Weeky operationsDuring a weekly crime prevention operation this
week 45 suspects were arrested in the Mitchell’sPlain cluster for various crimes.
Van der Vendt says on Tuesday afternoon a tip-off led to the arrest of a 43-year-old woman fordrug possession.
“The woman was stopped and searched in Con-stantia Road, Westridge, after police found fivestraws of tik in her possession,” says Van derVendt.
On Wednesday morning police on patrol inKorhaan Street, Rocklands, spotted a suspicious-looking man. He was searched and officers confis-
cated 12 units of heroin, half a mandrax tablet,14 packets of tik and two dagga stoppe.
“Later the same day, officers doing routine vehi-cle patrols in Dorper Street, Westridge, searcheda 29-year-old woman and officers found fourpackets of tik on her,” she says.
On Thursday the police followed up on informa-tion which led to the arrest of a 47-year-old womanin Megan Street, Tafelsig.
The woman was arrested with 18 dagga plants,16 dagga stoppe, a jar containing loose daggaand a white container, also with loose dagga.

WITH diabetes on the increase in Mitchell’sPlain, a local support group has spread its re-sources by starting another group in NewWoodlands.
The Colwood Chronic Diseases SupportGroup, started by Colorado Park resident and dia-betic Sandra Lewis, recently launched the groupat Northwood Community Hall.
They meet every second Thursday of themonth from 10:00 to 12:00. They offer support tosufferers of all chronic diseases, with the main fo-cus on diabetes.
Lewis says the second group was created aftervarious requests from locals were received.
“Residents could not attend the support groupin Colorado Park and because so many peopleare being diagnosed with diabetes in the area,I felt that it was essential to provide newly-diag-nosed diabetics with the support they need.
“In order to manage diabetes, one needs to beeducated about all facets of the condition, withspecial emphasis on diet, medication and exer-cise,” she says.
The support group works closely with DiabetesSouth Africa, which has a national network ofbranches and support groups.
“We aim to inform, educate, empower and en-courage people with diabetes and their familiesto take control of their condition,” Lewis explains.
The group has various guest speakers at theirmeetings who offer advice and promote aware-ness of the symptoms and dangers of all chronicillnesses. For details about the club contact Lewison 083 584 8416.
At Northwood Community hall, residents canalso participate in a range of activities, which in-
clude:• Arts and craft classes every Monday and
Wednesday from 11:00 to 14:00.• Aerobics classes every Tuesday and Thurs-

10:00 to 12:30.The centre offers various activities for scholars,
with volunteers assisting with homework afterschool.

A HELPLINE has been set up and will be staffedby a pharmacist to assist patients in need ofurgent medication.
This is in response to some areas experiencinga delay in the issuing of chronic medication.
The helpline has been set up by the Departmentof Health. This comes after UTi Pharma, the newservice provider responsible for the delivery ofmedicine parcels to public health facilities, experi-enced teething problems while an improved dis-pensing system was introduced.
Patients were forced to queue for hours at gov-ernment health facilities in recent weeks after thedata transfer of 200 000 patient files to the newcontractor caused the delay.
New business processes and the use of newequipment also impacted on the delivery service.Medicines have meanwhile been dispensed manu-
ally.A government spokesperson reports that the de-
livery of pre-packed prescriptions has now been re-sumed at many facilities.
Provincial health minister, Theuns Botha, saysthe Western Cape is “pushing new boundaries” interms of medicine dispensing.
“The new contract with UTi outlined expansionto new outlets and posed new challenges for theprovider. What we are now experiencing are teeth-ing problems, but they are in the process of beingresolved.”
Those experiencing difficulty in collecting theirmedication can phone the helpline on 083 4729300, where a pharmacist can help by guiding pa-tients to the nearest 24-hour facility where prescrip-tions can be obtained.

THREE schools in Mitchell’s Plain havebeen adopted by Taurus School Solutions– an NGO which will assist the schools toprosper and create a safe and friendly en-vironment for its students.
The pilot project was run at Westridge Sec-ondary School last year and is currently beingimplemented at Portlands Secondary, Mead-owridge Primary and Beacon View Primary.
The organisation will spend two terms ateach school, working with the principal, teach-ers and governing body. For the duration ofthe programme the team will ensure that allgovernance policies and procedures are notonly in place but running effectively.
The schools will benefit from intensiveplanning training which includes financialplanning, resource planning and general plan-ning to solve performance problems.
The organisation’s founder, Athol Williams,says if the school itself is not functioning prop-erly in terms of governance, management andorganisational performance, it is unrealistic toexpect teachers and learners to perform.
“Because education can level the playingfield, we have to ensure that our schools pro-vide learners with the right foundation. Thisinvolves more than repainting classrooms andproviding teaching aids and student bursa-ries,” he says.
With the Department of Education alreadyadopting a “whole school” approach throughits Whole School Evaluation system, Williamsadds that public and private partners need tofind effective means of supporting these holis-tic efforts.
“Our approach at Taurus School Solutionshas been to develop very practical, custom-ised interventions, partnering with the school
to support leadership, teachers and learnerswhile building on existing strengths.
“Because our methodology has beenaligned to the education department’s meas-ures, recommendations and progress cantranslate into departmental expectations be-ing met,” he says, adding that the organisa-tion’s approach is to promote job-embeddedlearning that builds capacity.
Williams argues that no organisation canoperate effectively and achieve its desired ob-jectives without effective governance, moni-toring and planning.
“To address the fundamental performancechallenges we see at specific schools, weneed to look at them as holistic organisations– and treat them accordingly. In disadvan-taged schools, we find instances where alarge proportion of teachers lack adequatesubject knowledge and basic pedagogicalability, especially in subjects such as languag-es, science and maths. Poor support from anadministration and planning perspective ex-acerbates the additional challenges theyface.”
Portlands Secondary principal WinstonFilies welcomed the initiative.
“We were approached by the organisationto have the research done and we found thatthere are areas in our school which could dowith some improvements. We are currently inthe initial phase and meet constantly with theteam to ensure that all the problem areas aredealt with. It’s a noble idea and it is set to bene-fit all.”

The Food for Life, Messen-gers of Peace gardeningprojects forms part of ScoutsSouth Africa’s range of com-munity projects. The scoutsaddress various issues, rang-ing from feeding the hungry tocreating solutions to environ-mental issues, through theservice projects they do. Everyweek the scouts and local resi-dents take turns to look afterthe garden.

This event was coordinated on behalf of the fo-rum by Fred Arendse, the acting general secretaryof the forum.
Frank and honest discussions concerning theupliftment and development of the Mitchell’s Plaincommunity followed in the offices of the People’sForum.
The minister was accompanied by the appropri-ate department officials who committed them-selves to listen, absorb and positively influence thechange to a better life for the people of Mitchell’sPlain.
Matters deliberated on included relationship
building between the forum, ward councillors andcouncil officials.
The community’s urban renewal programme aswell as current and planned projects were dis-cussed.
The forum’s Community Workers Programme,comprising of volunteers, were shown to be capa-ble of creating something from nothing as they arewell-motivated and uses innovative methods tobeautify their respective areas.
After a very successful sites visit, the forum’s del-egation went to the Cape Town Stadium for aplanned meeting with all the political leaders ofMitchell’s Plain.
This day was concluded by engaging with sever-al other civil society organizations on the CapeFlats.

The game has grown into somewhat ofa grudge match in recent seasons and itwas clear that both sets of players weredesperate to claim bragging rights until thenext time the teams met.
