Charmaine Museko lives at Albertus Courts with her husband, James, who suffers from mo- tor neuron disease (MND), and is unable to make use of his limbs. Also living with them is a family friend and her 28-year-old son. James was an assistant mechanic for around 12 years; he played soccer for a local club in Lavender Hill and regularly walked from Re- treat to Simon’s Town for fitness – before his disease struck. Charmaine, who is calling on the City of Cape Town to come to her aid, says she has been wait- ing on the City’s housing list for about 36 years, after being moved from Lavender Hill. People’s Post reported on a similar situation experienced by a Plumstead woman last month (“Chains send a Strong message”, Tuesday 20 September). The woman, who also cared for a sick partner, chained herself to a vacant gov- ernment-owned house in Plumstead. Beverly Strong and her 48-year-old partner, Peter Eilers, even threatened to go on a hunger strike if the Department of Human Settlements and the City in general didn’t give in to their demands to occupy the two-bedroom house. They were eventually moved into the house – apparently because they occupied the next spot on the waiting list. “I was really inspired by that article, because I feel what that woman is going through, and I’m on the verge of doing the exact same thing to show how unhappy I am,” says Charmaine. In 1976, Charmaine moved with her father from Cape Town to Pontac Court in Lavender Hill, but the next year, her father died and the house was transferred to her first husband’s name. In 1981, Charmaine divorced her husband, but she says the Steenberg Rental Office told her she would be placed on the housing waiting list to get a free-standing house in good time. “I phoned them on numerous occasions, and they kept telling me everything was going to be fine, and that I must not worry. “But 36 years later I’m still waiting, and now I need that house more than ever.” In 1995, Charmaine married James, and they moved to the house in Albertus Court after a traumatising event, the details of which Char- maine does not wish to be made public. In June 2009, James started noticing a twitch in his right knee, which became more severe over time. James was misdiagnosed with nerve damage in February 2010. Later that year, James and wife noticed that even the small muscles under his skin had started to twitch, and his doctors started to fear the worst. In November 2010, after a gruelling battery of tests, doctors diagnosed James with MND – a group of neurological conditions that progressively destroy the nerve cells that con- trol many voluntary muscular actions, such as swallowing, breathing, speaking and walking. The City then offered Charmaine accommo- dation in Lavender Hill, but she declined due to fear of intimidation related to her earlier traumatic experience. When People’s Post visited the family’s home last week, James was watching the Springboks in action at the rugby World Cup in the lounge, with his wheelchair by his side. Charmaine says it’s a major struggle to trans- port James to hospital, as they need to carry him up and down a flight of stairs, usually with- out assistance. “I’m not asking for red carpet treatment, but it’s difficult, and we are really struggling. He needs to visit the hospital, but travelling with him has become frustrating.” The frustrated wife is now begging council for a house that can accommodate her hus- band’s condition. Their current home is too small – she is unable to wash James in the bath- room, he is unable to sleep in his bedroom, and is trapped in the flat by unnavigable stairs.. “I just want to live a happy life with James, and not struggle every time he needs to use the toilet or go to the doctor,” says Charmaine. Ward councillor Jan Burger says he knows of the family’s plight, but says, “She is one of the many people who are in the same predica- ment – but the City of Cape Town cannot be blamed for this. “I submitted a written report to the housing department and they indicated that she had al- ready been offered house.” Councillor Ernest Sonnenberg, Mayoral Committee member for Human Settlements, says the City’s hands were tied after the couple declined the ground floor accommodation on offer as they wanted to move to a specific area, and specifically wanted a cottage. “It is very im- portant to note that cottages very seldom be- come vacant, as eligible tenants have the op- tion to buy the cottages they occupy,” says Son- nenberg. He adds that around 380 000 people are currently on the City’s housing waiting list. “The need is, in reality, much larger than this figure, as we know that many people ... are not registered.” PLEASE HELP: Charmaine Museko shows a letter from the mayor, confirming that she is on council’s housing waiting list. Tuck shop outcryLILLIAN AMOS

IT’S COMMON to see children queu-ing at their local tuck shop in many

of Cape Town’s neighbourhoods, butparents are warning their children tostay away from a tuck shop on onestreet corner in Retreat.

Residents want the home-run tuck shopto be closed down as they believe the own-er sells drugs.

After community outcry reached thepolice, Steenberg officers obtained a war-rant and searched the home late lastmonth. Warrant Officer Hermanus vanDyk, Steenberg police spokesperson, saysa 19-year-old man was arrested after offic-ers seized 18 packets of tik. The police can-not confirm whether the suspect caughtduring their raid on the premises was liv-ing there, but officers are still keeping aneye on the tuck shop, and frequentlysearch the premises.

Now, neighbours have drawn up a peti-tion set to be handed over to the City ofCape Town in a bid to have the shop closeddown. One local, whowants to stayanony-mous for fear of victimisation, says thehome has been suspect for years.

“She ran a shebeen here a couple of

years ago, and now she is selling drugs. It’s wrong, and we are sick of her gettingaway with these things.”

Another community member says shedoesn’t allow her children near the shop.

“I have a 14-year-old son and a 10-year-old girl. I forbid them to go to that shopbecause I don’twant themexposed to suchthings. Drugs are everywhere, and it’s be-coming bad in our communities, but I tryto protect my children from it.”

People’s Post approached the owner ofthe house last week, and she vehementlydenied selling drugs. “Why would I be sostupid? The tuck shop is a way of makinga living.

“Why would I jeopardise that?”The road around the tuck shop is al-

ways buzzing with activity, with childrenplaying there, and teenagers sittingaround or kicking a ball about.

Kevin Southgate, Steenberg Communi-ty Policing Forum (CPF) chairperson, says , “Theproblem is that these shopsareunregulated, and they start out innocent-ly then end up selling drugs.

“We need to clamp down on these typesof operations and make it known that we,as a community will not tolerate this.

“I applaud the neighbourhood for tak-ing a stand with this petition.”

Cape life during thelate 17th centuryINITIALLY, the Cape was a half-way station for the Dutch EastIndia Company (DEIC) and not acolony of the Dutch Empire.

Much of the area of present dayDiep River, Heathfield, Retreat andSteenberg was relatively unknownto Europeans at the time.

However, the DEIC rulers at theCape built an almond hedge thatkept the indigenous people off theirtraditional grazing grounds, help-ing free burghers to get land alongthe Liesbeeck River.

Government headquarters wereset up at the fort (present day cas-tle), with little outposts scatteredaround. Two such outposts were“Aan de Steenbergh” (“this side ofSteenberg”) and “Agter de Steen-bergh” (“other side of Steenberg”).

Aan de Steenbergh is of histori-cal significance for present day Re-treat, Heathfield and Diep Riverresidents.

The first Dutch record of Aan deSteenbergh was in January 1672, af-ter Lieutenant Breitenbach andlandmetre Wittebol visited theFalse Bay coastline on 17 December1671.

They had instructions to meas-ure out uncharted territory, whichthey did and reported on.

Their suggestion, however, forthe erection of a signal flag on thepresent day Steenberg mountain

range was shelved. When the Eng-lish signed the Treaty of Dover withthe French against the Dutch on 6April 1672, it threatened the DEICtrade routes, and the Policy Councildecidedon30August to designa flagsignal system.

In January 1673, locally producedflags were sent to Aan de Steen-bergh to warn incoming DEIC shipswhether it was safe to enter Table

Bay.There was also some interesting

activity at Agter de Steenbergh, wherea reportwasmade in theda-gregister on 11 September 1672 ofa lion that had attacked sheep atthe newly established kraal. Thispost therefore served as signal sta-tion and livestock post.

On 5 May 1672, the DEIC rulersat the Cape deceivingly concludeda treaty with indigenous peoplealong the False Bay coast, where-by they surrendered considerabletracts of land. In 1676 the shep-herds living on Aan de Steenberg(present day Westlake and Tokai)said it was “an outstretched wa-ter-rich area, where two soldierswatch over 415 sheep, each with asnaphaan (musket).”

This area Simon Van der Stelused as his private grazinggrounds. In 1680, Matthias (Tijs)Michelsz married Catherina Ras,who owned the farm Zwaanswyk.

Ras married four times beforesettling down with Michalsz. Ac-cording to Dr Helen Robinson’s lat-est work, “The Villages of the Lies-beeck”, only a small number ofslaves worked on these “independ-ent” farms at the time. Between 1676and 1682, there were never morethan five herders, and, between 1684and 1685, five mountain workers inthe employ of the DEIC at Aan deSteenbergh.

IT WAS a tough road to the Co-ca-Cola Cup soccer final, butJunction Rovers of RygateLFA and Central from theNorthern Suburbs securedtheir spots for the first time af-ter hard semifinal play at Vy-gieskraal in Athlone on Satur-day.

Both teams played excitingmatches, with Rovers handingWoodlands Mitchell’s Plain LFAa sound 4-0 defeat. The teamfound their rhythm in the secondhalf, when the goal-scoring runstarted.

“We are very excited and over-whelmed, as it is a major historicachievement for our club,” saysRovers manager Peter Groepies.“The support we received fromspectators helped us pullthrough.”

Groepies says the team’s strate-gy, successful so far, will remainin play for the final.

Central, meanwhile, foughtOriental Gunners of Rygate LFAto a tense penalty shoot-out at fulltime, and aimed their way to a 4-2win after the 3-3 tie.

Central manager AbrahanJantjies says the pressure was ev-ident on everyone’s face.

“I feel like it’s been a blessingfor us, because we were 2-0 down

Newcomers setthe soccer stage

but we fought back and closed thegame 3-3.”

When asked to talk strategy,Jantjies simply says Central willcontinue to take its games on asa team.

“Talk is cheap. The game has tobe played, and we will take it onas we did with previous games.”

Central had been trying toreach the finals for two years be-fore striking it third time lucky.Rovers, meanwhile, sportsWasiem Poggenpoel, who hasplayed in three Coca-Cola finalsbefore.

Abdullah Alexander, in chargeof competitions at the Safa Cape

Town, wishes all finalists well, and says he’s pleased at how thetournament has turned out.

“The competition’s definitelyimproved over the years, andwe’re looking at a bumper final,”he says.

The finals take place on Satur-day at Athlone Stadium, and ahost of top-notch entertainmentwill accompany what Alexandercalls the “showdown of amateurfootball”, including an item ofdance by Limited Edition fromManenberg (known for theirwork on “SA’s Got Talent”), aswell as competitions and music, among others.

Vito fires his way into record booksA SIMPLE South African pastime got a braai-hard local into the record books and nabbedhim the accolade of the longest braai whenhe tamed hot coals for 32 hours straight onHeritage Day.

Vito Polera, a representative of Fruit andVeg City, fired his way into history when hebeat previous record holder Jan Braai’s 28-and-a-half hour stint by almost four hours atthe Food Lover’s Market in Willowbridge.

The record setting attempt was a Fruit andVeg City initiative.

Says Polera: “It was not as hard as I thoughtit would be, because the weather was good, and many locals popped in to spur me on.”

He adds that the victory is more special asit was done on Heritage Day.

“There’s nothing like a good braai to showhow much we have in common as South Afri-cans.” Brian Coppin, CEO and co-founder ofFruit andVegCity, says the ideawas forFruitand Veg City to show support for the one day

in the year when our common heritage asSouth Africans is celebrated around a pieceof meat on coals. “Breaking the record set byJan Braai is about keeping the record inSouth Africa – there have been many con-tenders for the title since last year, but Fruitand Veg City is the first challenger to bringout an adjudicator from Guinness WorldRecords to ensure it’s appropriately verifiedand official.” In the time it took to set therecord – from Friday 23 September at 09:00 toSaturday 24 September at 17:17 – Vito braaied74kg of meat, enough to feed 1 300 peoplethrough Fruit and Veg City’s corporate socialresponsibility partner, Foodbank.

Through Foodbank, Fruit and Veg City wasable to feed 1 300 individuals in need of hotmeals on Heritage Day.

The Food Lover’s Market sold boereworsrolls and Pepsi for R10 – and the proceeds willgo to five primary schools in the area.

During his record-breaker, Polera only

took two rest breaks, totalling just 17 min-utes, in 32 hours.

And this Guinness World Record-setting at-tempt was not without strict regulations.Guinness World Record adjudicator TarikaVara flew in from the UK to ensure the strictcriteria were met.

To meet the specified rules, Polera neededto have five types of meat cooking at all times, and was not allowed any assistance, bar mor-al support from the many onlookers. Twocameras were required to capture every sin-gle minute of the braai, while time keepersand auditors from Deloitte were on hand toaudit every moment of the braai.

Polera reckons his favourite meat for thebraai is “good old Karoo lamb chops”, andthat there’s nothing better than a braai withfriends.

“My favourite place to braai is in my braaikamer. South Africa’s idea of having a braairoom is indicative of our passion for braai –

we’ve devised a way to ensure that we canbraai regardless of the weather, for any occa-sion!”

THE road to the quar-terfinals for Englandnearly ended on Satur-day.

Scotland nearly domi-nated the team, butChris Ashton’s 78th-minute try left the Scotswith a disappointing 16-12 defeat; their onlyhope to remain in thetournament rode on aloss by Argentina, but this provedin vain. SA also had a shaky matchwhen they played the Samoans in afiercely physical clash that sentFrans Steyn, who had been an out-standing replacement inside cen-tre, home with an injury. SA stillmanaged to win their Friday match13-5 through good defensive play.

On Saturday, another major up-set was seen when Tonga beatFrance 19-14, and Australia beatRussia 68-22. On Sunday, mean-while, Argentina crushed Scot-land’s dreams when they beat Geor-gia 25-7, with host team New Zea-landdestroying theCanadians 79-15and Ireland grabbing a 36-6 winfrom the Italians.

This Saturday, the first quarterfi-nal match will be played by Irelandand Wales at 07:00 in Wellington; at09:30, England takes on France inAuckland. South Africa now facesAustralia in the quarterfinal onSunday at 07:00 in Wellington, andNew Zealand will play Argentina at09:30 in Auckland.

SA wasn’t the only team to suffera casualty during the ferociousgames; New Zealand supporters al-so lost fly half Dan Carter to an inju-

ry – he’ll be out for therest of the tournament.

Last week, People’sPost explained the rulesaround penalty kicks, free kicks and the 22mdropout. Now we willfocus on the rugbymark and hand-offs.

Rugby markThis rule is used in-

frequently – when iso-lated – to get out of trou-ble. It’s normally the

fullback or winger who catches aball on the fly, but it could be anyplayer who grabs it after it’s beenkicked ahead by the opposition andhas not yet touched the ground. Ifthe player about to catch the ball isabout to be tackled by oppositionplayers – and is in his team’s own22m or in-goal area – he can call“MARK!” if he makes a clean catch(it’s still okay if the ball has touchedany part of the goal posts). After be-ing takendown, playwill resumeonthe “marked” spot, with the catch-er’s team in possession.

Hand-offsThe stiff-arm fend, known as a

hand-off, is a tactic employed by theball-carrier. Ball-carriers run to-wards defenders, who are attempt-ing to tackle them.

By positioning the ball securelyin one arm, the ball-carrier can ful-ly extend his other arm, palm-out,locking his elbow.

The ball-carrier uses this hand toshove his opponents away at thechest or shoulder. The fend is apush, not a strike.

A stiff-arm fend may cause thetackler to fall to the ground, takinghim out of the play.

Softballers hit the pitch swingingSoftballers hit the pitch swingingLYNN PRINS

A WEEKEND training camp in CapeTown showed just how fearless the

under-19 softball women are.

The squad of 20 are definitely not afraid ofswinging a bat facing decent fast pitching, orthrowing a ball from the outfield to nail a run-ner; as the saying goes, “Dynamite comes insmall packages.”

Getting ready for the upcoming JuniorWomen’s World Championship (JWWC), thegirls took on Falcons super league team in awarm-up match on Saturday, and played dou-ble matches against Westridge Yankees onSunday, showing dynamic character towardboth teams.

However, Lester Smith, coach of the SA un-der-19s, feels that there is still a lot of prepara-tion ahead.

“This weekend was our first match situa-tions, and I am not entirely satisfied with thegirls’ performances – there still needs to bea lot of hard work before we can actually beready to take on the world championship.”

The women train on Wednesdays and Sat-urdays, and hit the gym on Tuesdays at theSports Science Institute.

Leadingup to theJWWC,People’sPostaimsto profile a couple of players every week tointroduce them to the public.

• First up is Western Province player Kath-ryn van Boom (17).

This Grade 11 student at Bergvliet HighSchool plays as catcher for Tanta Sport. Herhobbies include reading and, of course, play-ing sport; she enjoys the music of The Ar-rows, James Morrison, and Alicia Keys, with

her favourite actor being Ben Stiller. The burgeoning sportswoman – whose fa-

vourite foods are lasagne and steak – hassome serious life goals: She wants to study at

UCT’s Health Science Faculty, and to con-tinue representing her country in softball.

Her motivational quote is, “Never be sat-isfied with what you achieve, because it all

pales in comparison with what you are capableof doing in the future.”

• KwaZulu-Natal’s Julia Meaker, also aged 17,plays for Ashleys and takes up outfield andcatcher positions.

Currently in Grade 11 at Durban Girls’ HighSchool, her hobbies include mountain biking, touch rugby and hockey.

She enjoys a variety of old and new music, and her favourite actor is Ryan Reynolds.

Her power foods are pasta and pizza, and herlife goal is “to be the best me I can be”.

She’s driven by two motivational quotes:“The harder you fall, the higher you bounce,”and,

“Adversity can either break you or make youbreak records.”
