As we start the new year, I am excited to lead the district as the Superintendent of Schools. Since the opening of schools this past September, the district has undergone numerous initiatives including a 1:1 pilot currently underway at Pequannock Township High School. Teachers participating in the pilot received a Google Chromebook and committed to several days of professional development on how to use the device and then incorporate the technology into daily instruction. These teachers, along with several students, also visited area schools that have a history of 1:1 programs in order to gain insight into methodology, best practices for transitioning, and developing a program for ongoing training for students, staff, and parents. I am pleased to announce that the success of the 1:1 program has led to the creation of an additional two cohorts of teachers. The addition of the aforementioned staff participating in 1:1 increases the total number of teachers involved to nearly 50% of staff. Furthermore, given the success of the pilot, all staff have been given a Chromebook to begin exploring and implementing 1:1 lessons. I urge parents and students to visit the link below for more information on the 1:1 timeline, goals, FAQ?s, handbook, and policy. https://sites.google.com/a/pequannock.org/1-1-chromebook/ This is just one of many exciting programs that we hope to bring to students in all grade levels. As Superintendent, I plan to work with stakeholders to build consensus and implement exciting programs such as a wellness initiative and school sustainability. Both promise to increase health and well-being of staff, students, and community while lowering the district's carbon footprint. We will continue to provide our staff with professional development that will enhance the opportunities they can share with our students. The Google Summit that we hosted in January was an exciting day for our faculty and staff. Finally, I am thankful for the overwhelming participation of community members in Strategic Planning. Strategic Planning is paramount as it helps set the goals and direction of the school district for the next five years, and the committee will make recommendations in several areas including finance, facility, technology, safety, and student achievement. Having been part of the Pequannock Township School District for these past 18 months, I have seen a remarkable sense of community and school pride. It is an honor to serve as Superintendent and I look forward to working with the Board of Education, students, parents, staff, administration, and community members as we continue to ensure our students receive the best possible education. We will be relentless in this endeavor. Thank you and go Panthers! Sincerely, Brett Charleston Brett Charleston Superintendent of Schools

As we usher in the New Year, we also are usher ing in a new Super intendent to lead the Pequannock Tow nship School Distr ict. Just a shor t 18 months ago, I came to Pequannock to ser ve as the Inter im Super intendent in the wake of the r esignation of Dr. Hayek.

The time that I have spent in the distr ict has been ver y enjoyable and rewarding. The Distr ict has an outstanding staff and a pretty amazing group of students that i t ser ves. Ever yone has been ver y welcoming and there was always a w i l l ingness to work together to do what is best for the chi ldren of Pequannock Tow nship.

However, ever y distr ict needs permanent and stable leadership and the appointment of Mr. Brett Char leston w i l l accomplish both of those goals. Mr. Char leston knows the distr ict and has easi ly tr ansi tioned into his new posi tion. I know that the

distr ict is in excellent stead under the leadership of Mr. Char leston.

Thank you for providing me w ith this wonder ful oppor tuni ty and thank you for al l of your suppor t over the last 18 months. I would l ike to especial ly acknow ledge the Board of Education under the leadership of Mrs. Kim Quigley. They are a ver y dedicated group of individuals whose only focus is the chi ldren in this community.

Dur ing the next 6 months, I w i l l be addressing some special projects and assisting the distr ict in the areas of Str ategic Planning, human resources, budgeting, negotiations and ensur ing a seamless tr ansi tion. I t is w i th a sense of nostalgia that I move on; however, I am absolutely cer tain that I leave the distr ict w i th excellent leadership, suppor tive parents and board members and amazing students and staff !

On Tuesday Januar y 19, al l staff from Pequannock Tow nship School Distr ict par ticipated in a Google Summit held at Pequannock Tow nship High School. Instr ucted pr imar i ly by their peers,  teachers along w ith suppor t staff , and teaching aides were able to select f ive di f ferent workshops that highl ighted Google Apps for Education (GAFE) and how to integrate these apps and other programs into the classrooms at al l levels and for al l students.  Examples of the workshops included Google Classroom, Google Dr ive, Google Apps for Elementar y & Middle School, and Google Si tes.

In addition to the in-house presenter s, there were several other teaching professionals who came speci f ical ly to showcase additional applications that are useful in the classroom. Presenter s came from Roxbur y, Chester Tow nship, and as far as Hi l lsborough to par ticipate in the Summit.

The day began w ith a keynote address by Mr. Wi l l Richardson who shared his insights r egarding the need to tr ansform education. His words sparked interest and discussion, as well as inspir ation for many in attendance.  Mr. Richardson?s message encouraged teachers to r ethink the long-held beliefs about schools.  He stated, ?schools were bui l t upon the fundamental premise that teachers and know ledge and information was scarce.  That is no longer the case.?    This message resonated

among those l istening and provided the oppor tuni ties for al l to question their existing beliefs r egarding teaching and learning.

The Google Summit precedes the implementation of a 1:1 Chromebook program that w i l l go into effect at the High School beginning September, 2016 where each student w i l l be given a Chromebook to use in ever y class. In anticipation of that rol lout, the Pequannock teachers and administr ator s r ecognized the need for professional development using the device.  The Google Summit was an oppor tuni ty for teachers to explore potential of this tool in their classrooms.

Overal l , the day was a success thanks to the enthusiastic par ticipation of al l involved. Here is some of the feedback from those who par ticipated:

?I alr eady applied this to my Math lesson this morning - to let the kids discover, r ather than tel l them. I put up a question that I would have used as an exi t question and asked them i f they could take a minute to look at i t and f igure out the answer and tel l me why they thought that. They then talked i t out w ith a par tner and we regrouped and put those ideas on the board.?

?I w i l l be able to uti l ize the Google classrooms app as a way to organize student assignments, announcements, r esources and

documents. I think this is a great r esource to uti l ize in a classroom as ei ther an alternative or a supplement to tr adi tional means.?

?Our students are evolving much faster than education is. The system w i l l take a whi le to catch up so we must do our best to keep ahead of the system in our classrooms. -Technology is more than just making a digi tal ver sion of ever ything.?

Pequannock Reaches t he Google Summit

Will Richardson, a public educator for 22 years and an outspoken advocate for change in schools and classrooms in the context of the diverse new learning opportunities that the Web and other technologies now offer spoke to the faculty and staff to kick off the Google Summit.

Outstanding senior leadership al lowed for another w inning season for the gir ls soccer team, f inishing w ith a 9-8 overal l r ecord including extr emely impressive victor ies over two of the top teams in Mor r is County in Vi l la Walsh and Kinnelon. At the Mor r is County Championships, the gir ls were for tunate enough to place thir d overal l w i thin the NJAC, and the boys per formed in the top thir d of numerous meets throughout the season.  I t should also be noted that six members of the team were r ecognized as All-NJAC recipients.    Gir ls Tennis

The gir ls tennis team had their best season in r ecent memor y w inning 3 conference matches on the year, including impressive w ins over Boonton and Hopatcong. The team was also r epresented well at the Mor r is County Tournament, advancing two team members, (Evangeline Witzak, Kamila Mager ia) into the thir d round of play.  The team was also for tunate enough to compete in the Nor th 1 Group 1 state playoffs at Cresski l l last week.

PV Soccer

The Pequannock Valley boys and gir ls soccer teams both had amazing seasons. The boys team coached by Mr. Gregg Slaff f inished w ith a 10-3 overal l r ecord, which al lowed them to r eceive the number 1 seed the in the Mor r is County Group 3 tournament.  The gir ls team, coached by Mr. Jon McBurney, f inished w ith a 10-3-3 overal l r ecord and a number 1 seed in the Mor r is County Group 3 tournament.  After upsetting a Denvi l le team ranked number 2 in the county, the gir ls captured the Mor r is County Co-Championship w ith a tie against top seeded Chester.

On December 16th, 2015 @ 7:00, the PTHS Auditor ium was packed w ith parents, students, teachers and members of the community to suppor t our f lour ishing music program. The audience was tr eated to four di f ferent ensembles. The Concer t Choir and Chamber Choir, dir ected by Judy Sayad, and the Jazz Band and Concer t Band, dir ected by Anthony Strei fer. After months of hard work and preparation the students put together a diver se musical assor tment of hol iday and secular selections.

The concer t star ted off w i th a humorous selection by the Concer t Choir enti tled "The Twelve Days After Chr istmas." I t was fol lowed by a number of hol iday selections featur ing both classical and jazz ar rangements of both fami l iar and modern tunes. The Choir por tion of the concer t was closed w ith the Pequannock Tow nship tr adi tion of "O Holy Night." POLAR EXPRESS CONTINUES TO RAISE FUN & FUNDS AT NBEver y year the students, staff , parents and community members of Nor th Boulevard come together to r aise funds for fami l ies or organizations in need. Each year, the event var ies sl ightly from the previous years as we look to have more and more involvement from our students. This year we achieved a whole new level of student engagement. Our 5th grade students, w i th suppor t from their teachers, took over the or chestr ation of this community out r each. They planned, organized, and actively r an most aspects of the ini tiative. In turn, we had the greatest r esponse we have yet to have by those w i l l ing to give to and suppor t this program.

Students and staff used our Google platform to faci l i tate communication as we gathered input and ideas along the way. This technology increased the eff iciency and effectiveness of the preparation leading up to the Holiday Sweet Shoppe activi ties and as par t of our fol low -up for the event. Students also learned impor tant math ski l ls, how to manage money and safe Internet shopping practices as they purchased the i tems online for the famil ies. We used remaining funds to make monthly contr ibutions to our local food pantr y.

They have di f ferent needs each month and because of the amount of money we raised we w i l l be continuing to contr ibute throughout the year.

In addition to the students? tr emendous work, we had many parents who helped step up to ensure that the students had what they needed to make this event r un smoothly so that i t was enjoyable for ever yone. Hundreds of baked goods were made, decorated, and packaged by our students whose parents suppor ted this program.

On behalf of the Nor th Boulevard Community, we wanted to thank ever yone for their suppor t and generosi ty to our Polar Express Community Outreach. We raised over $2500 at the Holiday Sweet Shoppe and Santa Photo shoot. Your chi ldren surpassed our expectations w ith how devoted they became and reaching a new level. We had additional fami l ies sending in donations fol low ing the event. I r eceived more family donations and two individual student donations br inging our total money raised to over $3,300. This total exceeded the previous year by over $1300. We are so grateful for the kindness and good ci tizenship exhibi ted by our chi ldren.

PEQUANNOCK IS READY TO HIT IT OUT OF THE PARCC

In November and December, r esults were r eleased from last year?s Par tner ship for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) test. Last year, the test was administered to students in grades 3 through 11 in the areas of Mathematics and English/Language Ar ts (ELA).  Parents r eceived their chi ld?s r esults in the form of a comprehensive scor ing r epor t for both subjects tested.  For ELA, score r epor ts showed how students did w ith Reading in the areas of Li terar y Text, Informational Text, and Vocabular y, whi le Wr i ting indicated how students per formed w ith Wr i ting Expression and Know ledge and Use of Language Conventions.  Mathematics score r epor ts were broken into four subcategor ies:  Major Content, Additional & Suppor ting Content, Expressing Mathematical Reasoning, and Modeling & Application.

PARCC results for distr ict students show that the percentage of Pequannock students meeting or exceeding standards in ELA and Mathematics is higher than New Jersey and other states in near ly ever y grade

and subject. These results w i l l be analyzed by teachers and administr ation and used to improve cur r iculum and instr uction, whi le also offer ing another data source for identi fying students who need additional help. Last summer, PARCC announced changes for the administr ation of this year?s test. Instead of two testing w indows, students w i l l only take the test in one w indow in Apr i l or May.  This w i l l r educe overal l testing time and number of uni ts.  Pequannock Tow nship School Distr ict has announced the fol low ing dates for this year?s PARCC and science testing:

This is the four th year that our Creative Sculpture students are par ticipating in the Empty Bow ls Project. Students created handcrafted ceramic bow ls which were then decorated by community members at the high school on Saturday, Januar y 9th. The bow ls are made in preparation for the Empty Bow ls Dinner. This event is sponsored by WHIM-Women?s hands in Mission, along w ith the PTHS and 5th Grade SJG Ar t Students.

The Empty Bow ls Project is an international grassroots effor t to f ight hunger. The basic premise is simple: potter s, educator s, students, and others work w ith the community to create handcrafted bow ls. Guests are invi ted to a simple meal of soup and bread. In

exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bow l as a r eminder of al l the empty bow ls in the wor ld. The money raised is donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecur i ty.

Al l are invi ted to attend the Empty Bow ls Dinner on Tuesday, Februar y 23rd, from 5:30-7:00 pm in the PTHS cafeter ia. Adults $10, chi ldren (10 & under ) $5.

OPERATION THANK YOU SPREADS CHEER OVERSEASStudents from Hi l lview School and Pequannock Valley School par tnered w ith the West Mi lford School Distr ict to par ticipate in Operation Thank You pr ior to the holidays. Ear ly in November Mr. Por tas and Mr. Hayzler met w ith Mr. Dygos, a business teacher in West Mi lford and a parent of chi ldren in the Pequannock Schools. Mr. Dygos star ted a program called "Operation Thank You" in which care packages and letter s are sent overseas to soldier s who are away from their fami l ies for the holidays.

At Hi l lview School, Mrs. Munro, the Hi l lview Media Special ist organized a student program in which she simulated "George Washington's Crossing." Students par ticipated in a var iety of activi ties that included letter w r i ting to the soldier s and a r ed, white and blue station. I tems for care packages were col lected. Enough i tems were col lected to send six large care packages to soldier s in Afghanistan.

On October 20th, Pequannock Valley School welcomed Mr. Keith Hawkins to come speak to al l 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. Kei th Hawkins is an international speaker who presents and conducts programs to over 400,000 students, parents, educator s, and leaders annually.

Kei th?s message that day was a simple yet power ful one ?Str ive to be ?Better Than Good.?  He conducted two hour long sessions for the enti r e PV student body in which he talked about his ow n l i fe exper iences and how they have helped to mold him into the individual he is today.  Throughout the course of each session, he brought his message back to the students seated in front of him and always r eminded them that, when they are asked how they are doing, the answer should not just be ?good? but ?better than good? because they are par t of such a wonder ful community.

After the two sessions, Keith gave a special workshop to 50 7th and 8th graders. The workshop focused on col laborating w ith other people, leading yourself and others, and being a good role model. The interactive workshop w i l l be essential as the 8th graders continue to ser ve as leaders of the school. The 8th grade Peer Leaders also had the oppor tuni ty to meet w ith him in small groups throughout the day in which he provided them w ith advice on how to help their classmates. PV would l ike to thank the Pequannock Valley Home and School Association and the Pequannock Municipal Al l iance for sponsor ing the presentation.

PV STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT LEADERSHIP

PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAM THRIVES AT NORTH BOULEVARDThe Pequannock Tow nship Pre-School program provides an interactive learning environment. Guided by the Tools of the Mind Cur r iculum, students learn self- r egulation, social ization and foundational academic ski l ls. Mrs. Rubino?s class is busy learning and playing in their Medical themed center s.  They are having fun being doctor s, nur ses, EMTs, pharmacists, and patients.  Additionally, they have been singing lots of songs and per forming f ingerplays about doctor s. To suppor t this theme, they have been  r eading books that r elate to i t.  Some of their favor i tes are Dr. DeSoto, Franklin Goes to the Hospital and Cordoroy Goes to the Doctor.
