Health:

Silly Kitchen:

"If there's a way to manipulate the human diet to let us

live longer, we haven't figuredit out yet and it may not ex-ist," said biologist StevenAustad from the University ofTexas Health Science Centre, who conducted the analysis.

Since 1934, research hasshown that lab rats, mice, yeast, fruit flies and roundworms fed 10% to 40% fewercalories than their free-eatingpeers lived some 30 percentlonger. In some studies, theylived twice as long, the journalNature reported.

Such findings havespawned a growing commu-nity of believers who seek bet-ter health and longer life in calo-rie-restricted (CR) diets, aspromised in the 2005 bookThe Longevity Diet, including5,000 members of the CR So-ciety International, accordingto the Daily Mail.

The research has alsoprompted companies likeProcter & Gamble and NuSkin Enterprises to developdrugs to mimic the effects ofcalorie restriction.

The new study, from theNational Institute on Aging(NIA), part of the US NationalInstitutes of Health, suggests

Low calorie diet doesn't addto longevity

The use of “smoky coal”for household cooking and

heating was found to be asso-ciated with a substantial in-crease in the lifetime risk ofdeveloping lung cancer, accord-ing to a study from China.

Exposure to certain typesof solid fuel smoke is associ-ated with several diseases, in-cluding chronic obstructivepulmonary disease, acute res-piratory infections, and lungcancer. However, the relation-ship between smoky coal useand lung cancer is not fully un-derstood.

So an international team ofresearchers compared deathsfrom lung cancer between life-long users of “smoky coal” and“smokeless coal” for house-hold cooking and heating inXuanwei County, YunnanProvine, China, where lungcancer rates are particularlyelevated.

In total, over 37,000 indi-viduals were followed over a20-year period (1976-96) dur-ing which time more than2,000 deaths from lung cancerwere recorded.

After taking account ofother possible risk factors in-cluding tobacco use, lung can-cer cases and deaths were sub-stantially higher among users

Women suffer high rates ofsleep apnoea: Study

this link doesn't hold true forall species.

It found that most of the57 calorie-restricted monkeysdid have healthier hearts andimmune systems and lowerrates of diabetes, cancer orother ills than the 64 controlmonkeys.

However, there was nolongevity pay-off.

"You can argue that thecalorie-restricted animals arehealthier," said Austad.

"They have better choles-terol profiles, less muscle loss, less disease. But it didn't trans-late into greater longevity. What we learn from this is youcan un-link health and longev-ity," added Austad.

The NIA study, launchedin 1987, is one of two investi-gating whether eating just 70percent of the calories in a stan-dard lab diet extends life in along-lived primate.

The Wisconsin NationalPrimate Research Centre'sstudy, begun in 1989, also usesrhesus monkeys, whosephysiology, genetics and me-dian lifespan (27 years) arecloser to humans than are therodents in earlier calorie-re-striction research.

of smoky (i.e. bituminous) coalfor home cooking and heatingthan users of smokeless (i.e.anthracitic) coal.

In absolute terms, the riskof lung cancer death before 70years of age for men andwomen using smoky coal was18% and 20% respectively, compared with less than 0.5%among smokeless coal users ofboth sexes. These risks are al-most as high as those reportedfor heavy smokers in Westerncountries, ranging between20% and 26%.

Lung cancer deaths werealso associated with the aver-age number of hours that asmoky coal user spent at homeand the age at which partici-pants started cooking.

The researchers say thattheir findings have importantimplications for public healthin this region of China and sug-gest that the use of less carci-nogenic types of coal or otherfuels can translate into a sub-stantial reduction of lung can-cer risk.

As this chemical andphysical composition of coaldiffers widely in different geo-graphical locations, additionalresearch is needed on the car-cinogenicity of various typesof coal, they added.
