Music City Drum Corps Percussion Auditions
2017
2017 Music City Drum Corps Percussion
Warmest Greetings, Welcome to the 2017 Music City Drum and Bugle Corps Percussion Auditions. I am very excited to send you this letter of basic info in helping you prepare for your full audition experience. As you read through this brief letter and develop any questions about MCDC or auditioning in general, please be sure to jot those down and email me at the address listed later in this letter. I look forward to meeting each and every one of you in the upcoming weeks! Auditioning The first thing to remember about auditioning is to stay calm and relaxed. Are we as a staff looking for something in particular? Yes we are. However, that should never stop you from being yourself and doing the absolute best that you can. We don’t expect you to be perfect walking in the door, but do expect you to walk in with an open and receptive mindset, and leave the camp feeling better than you came. If you experience a great amount of nerves when playing in front of someone, then prepare as much as you can so that you can reduce that stress. One of my best teachers always says that preparation is the remedy of nerves. So, always prepare as much as possible, but never cram. Also, play in front of as many people that can fairly and appropriately critique you. Above all, you must have a positive attitude. Believe it or not, your attitude can greatly affect how your audition goes, as well as how much you can learn from it. Communication Anytime you have a question or concern about anything related to MCDC, be sure to email me as soon as possible. A full updated staff list will be published in the weeks to follow. If you know any MCDC veteran members, please feel free to contact them about more section-‐related MCDC items. Lastly, if you are attending the audition camp and are having any issues arriving to the camp on time, please contact me as soon as possible. It is better that you call one of us and let us know that you will be so many hours/minutes/days late than to try and sneak in. This is also for your safety.
Materials and Logistics First of all, please be sure to register online at MusicCityDrumCorps.org. If you do not register, you will not be eligible to attend the camp. Once you have registered, be sure that you have all audition materials downloaded. If you are in question about any missing materials from the audition packet, please email me as soon as you can. You will need to read the appropriate audition letters and learn the included exercises. Also, please check the letter for any items that you will need to bring that are related to the “rehearsal” portion of the camp. If there are any updates to the packet, you will be notified via email and/or the Facebook audition group. If you are not in the Music City 2017 Auditions Facebook group, please be sure to add yourself as soon as possible. This will also help keep every person auditioning up-‐to-‐date. Please find the amounts for the audition fee and membership dues on the MCDC website. Clinic Only In the past, individuals have attended only for the education part of the camp weekend. We are still happy to accommodate those that want to attend just as a clinic. We will still have you participate as an auditionee (you will stay pay the camp fee), but you will not have an individual audition. If you feel that you want to change to audition status, then please let us know. This must be done before we move to individual auditions, however. Please be sure to indicate when you register that you are only attending for the clinic. Be sure to email me as well. Q&A For the 2017 Auditions, I will be holding 3 or 4 Periscope sessions to help answer any questions you may have. You will need to download the Periscope app for your phone, and then search for me as: @LandoSnare or Chris DeBerry. Dates for the Q&A session are TBD, so stay tuned for more information about that. Good luck in preparing for the audition camp. If you should have any questions whatsoever about auditioning for the percussion section, please post to the Music City 2016 Audition group on Facebook, or feel free to contact me at: [email protected] and I will put you in contact with the appropriate person The entire MCDC team looks forward to meeting you in December! Until then . . . practice much, practice well, and have fun. Sincerely,
Chris DeBerry Chris DeBerry Percussion Caption Head, Music City Drum Corps MCDC -‐ [email protected] Home – [email protected]
Music City Drum Corps Battery Audition Packet
2017
2017 Music City Drum Corps Battery
We very much appreciate your interest in auditioning for the 2017 Music City Drum Corps Battery. Please prepare the following materials for the December audition camp:
• Basic 8’s: 1/4 note = 80, 120, 160 • Double Beat Triple Beat: 1/4 note = 90, 120, 150 • Pattern 4.2: 100, 120, 140 • Stick Control: ½ note = 70-‐90 • Transitions: ¼ note = 80, 120, 150 • Triplet Rolls: dotted ¼ note = 120, 140, 160
For the camp, please bring:
• A portable music stand • A music notebook with your music in plastic sheet protectors • A pencil • An instrument with carrier or stand (bringing your own instrument will allow you to
more fully participate in the audition camp) NOTE: If you are flying in, do not bring an instrument or related equipment.
• Sticks and/or mallets Technique The idea behind the technique is to play “organically.” What does this mean? Simply put, only use what you have to use. Many times, you will notice that the wrist, arm, and finger can all work together without either part of the hand or arm being forced. Think of it in terms of playing drumset: use your wrist for the lower to mid-‐range dynamic for up to two surfaces, and at a moderate to quick speed. For faster notes, you add the fingers…or go straight to finger depending on the speed. For the louder, impactful stuff (e.g. crashing the cymbals, playing loud fills), you would add the arm. However, everything you do initiates from the bead of the stick. Also, the wrist will be involved for at least 90% of the things we play because it is our foundation of moving the sticks/mallets. The arm is simply allowed to move, and not forced to move. While you are preparing, remember to play as comfortably as you can. You are not expected to come in having this technique down since this is a general description. However, do aim for this approach, as this is what we will be using throughout the season.
Heights/Dynamics There are, in fact, several management systems for dynamics. Please familiarize yourself with this system, as this is what we will use throughout the season.
• (Vertical w/arm) 15+”: fff • (Vertical) 15”: ff • (about 80°) 12”: f • (About 50°) 9”: mf • (About 20°) 6”: mp • (Parallel) 3”: p
Good luck in preparing for the audition camp. If you should have any questions whatsoever about auditioning for the battery, please feel free to contact me at: [email protected] and I will put you in contact with the appropriate person. I will also be on Periscope occasionally (add me as @LandoSnare) so you can ask me questions live. The dates are not definite, however I plan to be on Periscope weeknights and weekends whenever I can. Set your phone to receive notifications from Periscope so you will know. The entire MCDC team looks forward to meeting you in December. Until then . . . practice much, practice well, and have fun. Sincerely,
Chris DeBerry Chris DeBerry Percussion Caption Head, Music City Drum Corps [email protected]
