Perennials for Northern ArizonaAbove 6,000 Foot Elevations
Cooperative Extension
Perennials are a favorite for many gardeners butparticularly for those gardeners in northern areas where theselection of shrubs is limited. Literally hundreds of differentspecies and cultivars of perennials can be grown above 6000feet. Perennials provide a wide range of shapes and forms, flower color, bloom time, foliage type, and cultural andenvironmental requirements. Some perennials bloom formore than a month in a blaze of color, others may flower foronly a week or two. Still others are grown more for theirattractive foliage than for their colorful flowers.
Perennials are those plants that persist in the garden fortwo years or more. They differ from shrubs in that they areusually nonwoody. Most are herbaceous meaning that theydie back to the ground in the fall. Some may retain a woodybase from which growth will emerge in the spring. Almostall perennials at the high elevations of northern Arizona willhave the above ground part of the plant die back during thewinter. Unlike annuals, the root system of perennials willlive through the cold winter months. It is from this survivingroot system that new growth will arise each spring.
Perennials can be used in various garden settings. The mostcommon way to use perennials is in the herbaceous border.Perennials can also be successfully used in island flowerbeds, with or without annuals, in rock gardens, in cottage gardens, mixed with bulbs, in mixed borders with shrubs, as a groundcover and even as a specimen plant. The uses for perennialare endless, with only your imagination limiting your design.
Matching the perennial to the environmental conditions ofthe garden is one important ingredient to success. With thesometimes harsh conditions of northern Arizona, manygardeners achieve success by carefully evaluating their siteand then selecting those perennials best suited to thoseconditions. Planting a long-blooming, sun-loving plant inthe shade will only give disappointing results.
General planting instructionsSoil Preparation — Proper soil preparation is essential for
successful perennial flower gardening. Many perennialsrequire a good garden soil or one that is porous, drains wellyet retains moisture. Organic matter improves the qualityand fertility of soil. The addition of organic matter also helpsto break up heavy clay soils. Unfortunately, most westernsoils are low in organic matter. And since the establishmentof a new perennial bed is only done once, unlike an annualbed or a vegetable garden, soil preparation is fundamental. You will never again have the opportunity to add significantamounts of organic matter to the entire bed.
The best addition for improving soil is homemade compost, but many similar products such as commercially preparedcompost, manure and wood products can be purchased.
Work 4 to 6 inches of compost or other additive into the soilto a depth of 8 to 12 inches. The addition of phosphatefertilizer when working in the organic matter can also bebeneficial. Add two pounds of bone meal or superphosphate(0-18-0) per 100 square feet at this time.
Some plants take exception to a good garden soil. Manyxeric plants such as penstemons and succulents dislike theaddition of compost. Too much organic material may causethese plants to rot in the winter. The addition of superphosphate, however, is still beneficial.
Care of established plantingsPlant division — Perennials may be long-lived but division
is essential to maintain this longevity. Basically plant divisionis nothing more than digging up an established plant andcutting or pulling them appear to make new plants. Each ofthese sections can then be replanted to create a new plant. The amount of time between division really depends on theperennial and the site. In general, many perennials in a bedor border should be lifted and divided every three to fiveyears. Signs that a perennial requires division include dieback in the center, smaller flowers or fewer flowers than theprevious year, and excessive crowding.
The time to divide perennials is when they are growingvegetatively but not yet flowering. Most perennials followthis general rule: divide summer and fall blooming perennialsin early spring and divide spring bloomers in late summer.Keys to successful transplanting include preparing the newsite for divisions before dividing takes place, digging plantsfrom the ground before dividing them, removing 1/2 thefoliage before replanting and replanting as soon as possible.Provide new transplants with a thick mulch in the fall to helpthem survive their first winter.
2 The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension
Deadheading — Deadheading is just a morbid term for anecessary horticultural technique that involves removingspent flowers. Deadheading extends the bloom season, keepsplants looking attractive, prevents invasive perennials fromself-sowing, and diverts energy from seed production toflower, shoot and root growth.
Irrigation — The amount of watering required by perennialsreally depends on the individual species, the site, and soilpreparation (see table 1 for water requirements for individualplant species). In general, new plantings, even thosecontaining low water users, need to be watered daily for abouttwo weeks. After the first two weeks, the time betweenwatering should be increased slowly so that within 4 to 6weeks moderate water users are being watered weekly. Astime between watering is increased so should the amount ofwater applied increase. In other words, water deeper but lessoften as the plants root system grows.
Most established perennials respond well to deep infrequentwatering. Group plants with like water requirements so thatwater needs can be precisely met. Drip irrigation is ideal forperennials because it can easily be added without disturbingexisting plants. Perennials will benefit from allowing thefoliage to remain dry during watering, therefore eliminatingpotential disease, problems and ensuring that water goes rightwhere it is needed most, to the root zone.
Mulching — After good soil, the annual addition of organicmulch provides the greatest benefit for perennials. Mulchesconserve soil moisture, improve soil structure, suppress weedgrowth, help to limit runoff, and protect plant roots fromtemperature extremes. Good mulches include compost, shredded leaves, newspaper, pine needles, straw, and woodor bark chips. Avoid using sawdust or peat moss. Inorganicmulches such as rocks or pebbles can be used for plants thatrequire a hotter, drier environment.
Winter mulching is critical to the winter survival of manyperennials, particularly in the first few years of establishment.Deep snow is the best winter mulch but can not be planned
on every winter. A protective layer of lightweight non-packing mulch, such as straw, pine needles or shreddedleaves, placed on the plants in the fall will protect the crownsand roots from freeze-thaw damage during the winter. Pullwinter mulch away from plants in the spring so that the soilcan warm up. After the plants have begun their springgrowth, it can be pushed back in place.
Fertilizers — Some gardeners like to add fertilizer to theirperennials on an annual basis. Others rely on a well-prepared garden soil and the annual application of compostor other organic fertilizer. Some perennials are very heavyfeeders, and even when grown in an improved soil, requirethe addition of nutrients. The best strategy is to see whatyour plants require whether it be organic or inorganic andthen give it to them.
In general, the time to fertilize is during the period ofgreatest nutrient need, the beginning of growth in the springto just before flowering. Choose a fertilizer formula thathas 5 to10 percent of each of the major nutrients such as 5-10-5 or 10-10-10. If you were able to apply bone meal orsuperphosphate when establishing the bed annualapplications of ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) or ammoniumnitrate (33-0-0) may suffice. Whether you use a granular ora liquid formula is a matter of personal preference and cost.Follow the label carefully and do not over fertilize. Excessnitrogen causes rapid leggy growth and fewer flowers.
Cutting back perennials – In general perennials shouldnot be cut back until the foliage has died. This is also truefor bulb type perennials such as tulip, iris, crocus, etc.
Selecting the right perennials –There are many perennialssuited to high elevations. Finding the plant at a local nurseryis sometimes the biggest challenge. The following tabledescribes over 80 of the common perennial plants thatperform well at the high elevations in Arizona and can bereadily found in local nurseries. It includes a key to helpyou make the best plant choice for your sites and culturalrequirements.
