Industrial Trip: VOLKSWAGEN – Wolfsburg When you think of Wolfsburg, you immediately think of cars. The Beetle, the symbol of the German economic miracle. The Golf, the epitome of the classless automobile. Volkswagen, the largest car manufacturer in Europe. Production location Around 46,000 employees work at the Wolfsburg location. At the Volkswagen plant, which lies on the banks of the Mittelland canal and occupies an area of more than six square kilometres, our employees build the Golf, Golf Plus, Tiguan and Touran models. In addition to vehicle production, the plant also makes vehicle components such as cockpit parts and propeller shafts - an important mainstay of production at the Wolfsburg site. History Construction of the Volkswagen plant began near Fallersleben in early 1938, as a facility for building the Volkswagen designed by Ferdinand Porsche. Only after 1945, under the direction of the British military authorities, did the armaments factory on the Mittelland canal become a commercial enterprise. To this day, the Golf retains its position as market leader in the compact class. On 25th June 2002, it overtook the Beetle when the 21,517,415th vehicle, a Golf V5 Highline in Reflex Silver Metallic, broke the previous record at the Wolfsburg plant. A special GTI adidas Edition model represents the latest milestone: in September 2010, the fifteen millionth Golf to be built at the Wolfsburg site left the assembly line.

Hannover
Hanover was founded in medieval times on the south bank of the
River Leine. Its original name Honovere may mean "high
(river)bank", though this is debated (cf. das Hohe Ufer). Hanover
was a small village of ferrymen and fishermen that became a
comparatively large town in the 13th century due to its position
at a natural crossroads. As overland travel was relatively difficult,
its position on the upper navigable reaches of the river helped it
to grow by increasing trade. It was connected to the Hanseatic
League city of Bremen by the Leine, and was situated near the
southern edge of the wide North German Plain and north-west of
the Harz mountains, so that east-west traffic such as mule trains
passed through it. Hanover was thus a gateway to
the Rhine, Ruhr and Saar river valleys, their industrial areas
which grew up to the southwest and the plains regions to the east
and north, for overland traffic skirting the Harz between the Low
Countries and Saxonyor Thuringia.
