Stressisdefinedasastateofmentaloremotionalstrainortensionthatresultsfromadverseordemandingcircumstances.(Dictionary,2017)Stresscausesaseriesofusefulphysiologicalandpsychologicalreactionsthatallowsourbodytoperformatpeaklevelsinordertosurvivetheperceivedthreat.Thisisthefight-flightresponsethathasallowedhumanstosurviveallofthethingsthathavetriedtokillusduringourevolutionaryprocess.
Thestress-performancecurveshownbelowdemonstrateshowhumansfunctionmosteffectivelywhenfacedwithamoderatedegreeofchallenge.

Differentindividualscanperceiveasingledifficultordemandingeventindifferentways.Itmaybeperceivedaseitherathreatorachallenge.Peoplefeelthatsomethingisachallengewhentheyfeelthattheyhaveadequateresourcestomeetthedemands.Incontrast,whentheindividualfeelsoverwhelmedbywhatisaskedofthem,orfeelsthatthereisactualpersonaldangerinvolved,thentheeventisperceivedasathreat.

No-oneissuggestingthatwejustacceptthesecondshiftastherealityofourjob.Ofcourse,itwouldbewonderfulifwecouldfixthesystem,butbydevelopingstrategiestooptimiseourabilitytoworkinthechallengedstate,webetterprepareourselvestoperformeffectivelyattimesofheightenedstress.Thisallowsustoperformtemporarilyintheheightenedstate,thenrecoverandreturntothechallengedstatewhenthethreathaspassed.
