They say the easiest part of modifying your vehicle is changing your wheels. However, there is more to just putting new wheels and tires on a car than bolting up a good-looking wheel. One might even say that it is a black art making a wheel and tire package look and fit just right on the vehicle that represents your particular tastes. sensitive to wheel balancing due to the tightness on new vehicles. To stay ahead of the game, Wheel Pro’s have invested in state-of-the-art technology such as their new Hunter Road Force balancer, an extremely precise fully-computerized unit that allows Wheel Pro’s to eliminate any vibration between wheel and tire by optimizing the weight distribution between the two.

The fact is, tires and wheels are not built perfectly; each will have a heavy and light spot that throws off the balance. The new Road Force

balancer can spot these very slight imperfections and allows the Wheel Pro’s to counter-balance the heavy spot on the wheel with the heavy spot on the tire, providing optimal balancing that in some cases requires no weights at all. The 1970s were a wasteland for gearheads trying to buy cool new cars. A few things emerged to take the wind out of car lover’s sails.

High insurance premiums for many muscle cars, a gas embargo and then spike in gas prices, and then the introduction of smaller and less-powerful cars in general. The Mustang II for 1974 was a much smaller Mustang with an available V6 that was vastly underpowered.

Weighing considerably less than the larger earlier models, it should have at least been somewhat peppy...but the V6 did nothing to warm any car guy’s heart. It had just over 100 horsepower, and the re-introduction of the V8 in 1975 with a measly 128 hp was nothing to brag about, either. Many car nuts feel the only thing a Mustang II was good for was its amazing independent front suspension and steering rack.

The styling was very good for a smaller car. Being based on a Pinto chassis for cost savings, the design guys at Ford did an amazing job with the looks of the car. I am sure it helped to have the hottest blonde dream of the era driving a cool Mustang II on a hit TV show, Charlie’s Angels. The Mustang sold well, but did not have the staying power, and by the late ‘80s, they were almost all gone from daily use.

So how does this lowly, most-hated Mustang get to be resurrected? At one time, the local Mustang Clubs did not even want to allow them


in. Tony Hall was not in the market for a car, let alone a project car for his wife, but when their oldest son came home with a modified 1977 Mustang Ghia with HellBoy painted on the sides, he ended up inheriting it.

Convincing the son it was a car to be sold - and sold quickly - a new paint job and interior were needed. One of the repairs needed was a motor mount and a parts car needed to be bought, since no repro-

duction parts were available at that time. Unfortunately, the parts car was in awesome shape...much too good to be parted out, so another parts car was needed. Not knowing there is no 12-step program for this addiction, Tony Hall started looking for another Mustang II.

Hall had always loved cars and had fixed up a few ‘60s Mustangs and even a couple of the Fox-bodied generation. For Hall, much of the enjoyment is in putting together the car, and the puzzle of finding parts to restore the Mustang II was very appealing. Hall was introduced to the Internet, and knowing the value of the parts, started to acquire all sorts of them including various colours of interior parts, and made them available to other Mustang II guys. A new business opportunity opened up with Hall’s wealth of knowledge and parts. One wall of his hobby business’ wall is lined with different-coloured consoles.

Once the collecting started, more great Mustang II’s kept showing up. Hall’s wife Angie wisely decided enough was enough and told

Hall so after 12 Mustang II’s. Knowing it is better to ask forgiveness than permission, Hall bought a yellow King Cobra and immediately phoned his wife to tell her he had bought her a car...and also another black parts car.

This yellow car was originally owned by a couple in Vancouver until the late ‘90s, and then it went to a new owner in Langley. The car was left alone and driven a little until Hall bought it in the summer of 2007. After paying for Angie’s new car, the fellow mentioned he had a black T-roof King Cobra also for sale...and Hall bought it as well.

To further involve Angie, the car was named “Angie’s King” and a new interior was designed using black vinyl with yellow piping and King Cobra logos embroidered into the seat backs. The rust-free car had a small number of dings that were repaired, and a new coat of yellow paint was sprayed and is brighter than the Ford original. An aftermarket Ford-licensed hood decal was applied and the car was ready for local car shows.

The general public was eating the car up, the local Mustang clubs had warmed to Mustang II’s, and more modifications for “Angies King”

were planned. The engine compartment was detailed and Canadian Carburetors provided the Roush 5.0-litre crate motor. Fifteen-inch “Blade Twist” wheels were installed and the car was shown this way during the Summer of 2008. It was also shown at an International Mustang meet in Oakville, Ontario in 2008, winning second place in specialty modified.

Once the 2008 car show season was over, a full dress up package was tackled. The outside received shaved door handles with remote

entry, as well as a new paint job. Full detailing of the underside followed, with chrome frame rail connectors and engine cradle and the installation of “Heidts” stainless steel control arms and a new lower profile rad and dual fans. The engine compartment was painted body colour and fully detailed and signed by Chip Foose, Gene Winfield, Brett Wagner and George Barris here in B.C., while the air cleaner was shipped to be signed by Jack Roush.

Brand new Coddington wheels finished the car, and the 2009 season saw many awards for “Angie’s King.” Seeing as it was finished, Hall heard at a Mustang show from a friend about a 1923 T-Bucket with a Jaguar rearend located on Vancouver Island. The price was right and after seeing the T-Bucket, Hall laughed at the idea of stripping the Jag rear end out of the hot rod and placing it in the Mustang, just to get back at

all the Mustang II’s that had their front ends ripped out and placed in Hot Rods. The more he thought about it, he could not resist the temptation to install the Jag IRS rearend into Angies car. An 8-inch rearend was put in the ‘23 T Hot Rod and sold for almost the same price that was paid for it.

After the 2010 car show season, some more freshening up of “Angie’s King” was needed, so the hopped up 8-inch rearend, the original heavy bumpers as well as the single Holley carb were history. Dual


Edelbrock Enduroshine four-barrels were installed with a matching polished Airgap Edelbrock Manifold. The bumpers were replaced by custom-designed fibreglass tucked bumpers that Hall designed himself. The bumpers were fabricated by Scott Rods in Ohio and are available to other Mustang II owners. Over 120 pounds were saved with the new bumpers.

The installation of the IRS was a little more complicated. The Jag rear-end was modified by a company called Mr. Roadster with the axles, u-joints, and swing arms all beefed up to handle the extra horsepower. The unique design has the centre section permanently mounted, so fabrication and installation of a special cross member between the frame rails was undertaken. Special care was needed to make sure enough room was available for the inboard disc brakes.

The Mustang’s leaf springs were removed as were the shocks, ex-haust pipes, gas tank and the rear leaf spring perch, while the front spring perch was utilized for the forward connecting arms. A round fuel cell was installed in the spare tire well. The custom low-profile aluminum roll pan finishes off the rear end, while allowing for a great view of the polished spinning shafts and rear discs.

The exhaust had to be dumped before the rear wheels, and a custom exhaust system was designed and built by Hall and his crew. After installing the new carbs, the bigger and taller hood scoop was faced forward to feed the new carbs. A new decal needed to be designed as well, to fit around the larger scoop.

After all this work, the three year-old paint showed well, but Hall de-cided to address any slight imperfections and a new deeper yellow was applied along with new decals. The original Ford Decals have a one-piece clear carrying membrane that tends to yellow with age. The new multi-piece decals by Axe Graphics are a work of art on the new “Screamin’ Yellow” paint.

Plans are still in the works for a sweet Gear Vendor overdrive system that will complement the 4.11 gears to make it a true cruising machine. The car has won over 60 awards and the likes of George Barris and

Chip Foose are sure to stop by at car shows to see what else has been added to the King of King Cobras.

Although starting with a stock King Cobra, Angie’s King is so far el-evated above what Ford had originally designed as to be a completely new car. The new tucked bumpers reduce the length by 12 inches, and the larger hood scoop and custom graphics are one-of-a-kind. But the true gem of the car is the polished Jag independent rear end with its flashing gleaming shafts and custom roll pan, and Hall has been heard more than once telling guys to go check out his wife’s rear end.

INDIVIDUAL VEHICLE EXHIBITOR RULES, REGULATIONS, INFO:DISPLAY SIZES: The standard vehicle display sizes are: Cars - 10’ x 20’ and Bikes 10’ x 10’. A larger area (20’x20’) is available for vehicles with more elaborate displays upon approval by show management.

CARPET, STANTIONS & ROPE: Please furnish your own display items to enhance the appearance of your display and increase your chances of receiving an Award for Best Individual Display. If you cannot furnish your own display items, the official show decorator can do so at a nominal cost. Please contact Showtime Event & Display at 604-327-5879 for more information.

ELECTRICAL POWER: Electrical power hook up is available for individual displays for a nominal fee. Please contact Global Convention Services @ 604-851-0224 for more information regarding ordering power.

COMMERCIAL ADVERTISING: Individual Vehicle Exhibitors are permitted to display signage to credit their sponsors and builders provided they are reasonable in size. Individual Vehicle Display area cannot be used for commercial purposes. Business card distribution is not allowed unless the vehicle is part of a Commercial Vendor Display. A small For Sale sign is permitted provided it is no larger than 6”x 9” in size.

MOVE IN: Move In for all vehicles is from 5:00PM until 10:00PM Thursday, April 18. Exhibitors will be allowed back in at 10:00AM Friday morning, April 19 to complete their displays. Please note: Due to WCB regulations children under 16 are not allowed in the building during move-in.

VEHICLE LOCATION: Show management shall determine your vehicle’s location within the show. All vehicles must be in place by 10:00PM Thursday night, April 18 and may not be moved until 5:00PM Sunday, April 21 and/or after the Awards Ceremonies are completed.

FIRE REGULATIONS: Flammable materials are not allowed in vehicle display. Disconnect vehicle battery. Fuel tank should be full.

SHOW PASSES: Each individual vehicle entry will be entitled to 2 complimentary weekend show passes.

JUDGING: Award winners in all classes will be determined by a panel of professional judges. ( Except the People’s Choice Award and Random Draw)

INDIVIDUAL CLASS AWARDS: First to Third place trophies and Cash Awards ($100 for First and $50 for Second place) will be awarded in all 28 classes of Individual Vehicle competition. All entries will receive one event T Shirt, Dash Plaque, Decal along with other goodies.

DISPLAY CASH AWARDS: A $100 Cash Award & Trophy will be presented for Best Individual Vehicle Display. Cash Awards & Trophies will also be presented for Best Club Display - $300 for First, $200 for Second and $100 for Third place

SPECIAL AWARDS: Seven $500 Cash Awards and Trophies will be presented for the Outstanding Street Rod In Show, Outstanding Race Car In Show, Outstanding Classic Car In Show, Outstanding Paint In Show, the George Barris Custom Car Of The Year Award, the Bob Phinney Best Debuting Entry Memorial Award and the Peoples Choice Grand Champion Best Of Show. In addition, one lucky participant will be awarded a $500 cash prize by Random Draw.

I tell you, California has a lot to offer the automotive enthusi-ast. Magnificent roads, beautiful scenery and a high density

of classic cars. There are literally hundreds of fine collections in California, but there is one certain display that has more than just iconic iron on display.

In essence, Far Niente Winery is the perfect place to visit with your significant other. No other place combines two passions quite like this historic site in the Napa Valley. While your wife will be caught up in the scenic beauty of the perfectly manicured estate, historic rock buildings and the rich aroma

Far Niente is a winery even a gearhead shouldn’t miss

of wine aging in oak barrels in underground caves, the last stop on the guided tour is one the gearhead will appreciate, that being the private collection of Gil Nickel. Nickel bought the winery back in 1979, reviving the business, but he also had a huge passion for fine cars as well as wine.

As a car nut, motorcyclist, and vintage racer, Nickel built a massive carriage house next to the winery out of lush red wood with which to house his precious collection. However, what’s brilliant about it is that it is not closed off to the public like so many private collections, but actually a stop on up to six daily tours. Surrounded by memorabilia, a well-rounded collection of American, German, British and more importantly, Italian hardware stand at the ready, waiting for Gil to one day return to his home.

FEATUREGil may no longer oversee his prized collection, but his legacy lives on in the bodies of these spectacular examples of automotive history. On one side of the building you are greeted by nothing less than a pair a Jags, an E-type and XK-120 side by side, followed by a Bentley Continental R, an Alfa Spider and a ’61 Vette. On the other side of the building is a Shelby GT350 replica sporting legitimate motivation, an early ‘50s Chevy panel van that has an equally motivated 454 and the company’s logo attached, which still gets used for company events, along with a London taxi, still Gil’s wife’s vehicle of choice.

Then, in the far corner, is the piece de resistance, a pair of prancing horses, a beautiful red Daytona Coupe flanked by what has to be one of the most beautiful cars I’ve ever laid eyes on, a breathtaking ’66 Ferrari 500 Super Fast. It’s almost enough for one to miss the Formula racer tucked in the corner. However, one special piece is missing, that being the Vignale-bodied ’51 Ferrari 340 America roadster. The ultra-rare Ferrari was Gil’s favourite, but it was sold after his passing.

Winnipeg World of WheelsThe 39th annual running of Piston Ring’s World of Wheels goes April 5th through 7th at the Winnipeg Convention Cen-tre. This year’s show is not lacking in star power with Dennis Gage from Speed Channel’s “My Classic Car” at the show on Friday night, Davis Cleveland who plays Flynn Jones on Disney’s “Shake it Up” stopping by Saturday, Christopher Douglas Reed who is Philip “Filthy Phil” Russell on TV’s Sons of Anarchy also on Saturday, and Wrestling superstar Adam “Edge” Copeland finishing it off on Sunday. The feature exhibit for 2013 is the Dark Rides Batmobile collection that will have three generations of the infamous Batmobiles including the original 1966 George Barris-built Batmobile that recently sold at the Barrett Jackson Scottsdale Auction for a whopping 4.6 million dollars. Also at the show is a Surf City feature display, Goat Farm feature display, trader club challenge, a Cruiser of the Year award and much, much more. Also, this year’s show is in conjunction with the 2013 Cyclerama presented by Lone Star Harley Davidson and will feature over 40 custom and vintage bikes of all kinds.
