A Note from the Director

I have long been a huge fan of Woody Allen’s comedies. Maybe it’s our shared hometown and culture, maybe it’s his brilliant, award-winning way with words, story and character, but whatever it is, his funny is my funny.

When the 1994 film of Bullets Over Broadway came out, I thought a new pinnacle of comic mastery had been reached. So I couldn’t be more thrilled to be directing the 2014 Tony Award nominated show, Bullets Over Broadway: The Musical, for the WVLO community.

The musical is based on the screenplay, and resounds with popular standards and jazz songs from around the 1920s, selected by Allen, and amended by Glen Kelly to fit the show’s story. It’s set in the wild and daring Roaring Twenties and the Golden Age of Broadway, when gangsters reigned supreme, celebrities strode the stage, and showgirls glittered like the lights of the marquees. In the story, the gangster world and theatre world become enmeshed in a tangle of artistry, ambition, deceit and violence. Such serious subjects, true, but due to the inexplicable, magical alchemy of comic writing, serious subjects become unexplainably funny! Bullets Over Broadway: The Musical embodies this paradox. The title says it all. Woody Allen found a deep vein of comedy at the intersection of bullets and Broadway, and struck gold.

I’m grateful for comedy, for laughter, for having had the chance to work on this fabulous show with the wonderful people I’ve met here at WVLO. Many heartfelt thanks to the producers, cast, artistic and production teams, crew and absolutely everyone who devoted their time and talent, and to you, dear audience, for coming to our show.

Sincerely, —Robin Aronson, Ph.D.

And for “A Chorus Line”, she was the recipient of our presti-gious Orchestra Award. You can find her in this pit playing woodwind instruments for “Bullets Over Broadway”. While Sarah is usually a pit musician, she helps backstage and with crew when she’s not playing and later this season she will take her baton and serve in a new role as Assistant Music

Director for our Spring show, “Sister Act”. When she’s not playing for WVLO, Sarah can be found playing with the SF Wind Ensemble and the Santa Clara Big Band. She is also the Director of Bands and Orchestras at Ravenswood Middle School and Cesar Chavez Academy in East Palo Alto.

WHO’S WHO IN OUR CASTMichael Brothers (Rocco) Michael returns for his fourth show with WVLO,

in the role of Rocco, one of the mob bosses henchmen. He says that it’s great to be back at WVLO, because everyone here is like a second family and it’s always a joy to be part of one of their productions. In fact, some of his closest friends are people he’s met here and he’s grateful for those friendships. He is also a performing musician and WVLO patrons may recall him playing the upright bass in “Crazy For You”, the banjo in “Oklahoma!” or the guitar in “Footloose, the Musical”. Michael would also like to thank his son, Will, for his encouragement and support. “He’s my biggest fan” says Mike, “well the tallest at least!!” (his son is 7' tall!)

Christopher Crosby Cruz (Flender/Gangster/Charleston Dancer/Dancing Frank #2) Christopher returns for his fifth show at WVLO, having previously appeared in last season’s production of “A Chorus Line” and in the ensembles of “Dames At Sea”, “Irene” & “Jesus Christ, Superstar”. Christopher was also recently seen in Tabard Theatre Company’s “Edith Stein” and “The Little Mermaid” at PA Players.

Noelle Dea (Annie, Josette) Noelle is excited to be back for her second production with WVLO, having most recently appearing as Betty in “Catch Me If You Can”. Her other favorite roles include Miss Minchin in “The Little Princess” at LAYT and a tap-dancing peppermint in CMTSJ’s “A Christmas Carol”. She was a competitive hula dancer for 8 years and currently studies tap and jazz. She is part of Starfire youth choir at LAUMC and takes private voice lessons. When she is not singing and dancing, Noelle enjoys drawing, painting, signing ASL and taking care of her two rescued poodles. Enjoy the show!

Tony Gonzales (Warner Purcell) Tony is always excited to return to the WVLO stage, especially in this 1920’s madcap romp. He was last seen as Greg in last season’s “A Chorus Line” and you may have seen his previous “work” in one of our past productions; namely, “42nd Street”, “Funny Thing..Forum”, “Guys & Dolls” and his very first show on our stage, “Gypsy”, when he played Yonkers. More recently you may have seen him in other Bay Area productions such as SCP’s “A Chorus Line”, PAP’s “Young Frankenstein” or “Miss Saigon”; BBB’s “Crazy For You”, “Millie” or “Miss Saigon”. In his spare time he works as a Sales & Accounting Operations Manager for a Cloud Financial Management Software Company in downtown SJ. When not playing on stage he enjoys spending time with his Godson Riley and his 2 pups, “Tessie Chicken” & “Waffles” (Mr. Woofles).

Sandra Henschke (Olive Neal) Sandra returns for her fourth production with WVLO having previously appeared as Paula Abagnale in “Catch Me If You Can” , as Duchess Estonia Dulworth in “Nice Work If you Can Get it” and Polly Brown in “The Boy Friend”. She also performed in BBB’s “My Fair Lady”. Offstage she enjoys pursuing her career in Human Resources, and in her spare time playing music with her church worship band, staying active and spending time with family and friends.

Sharon Henshke (Daisy, Atta Girl, Gangsterette, Erte) Sharon is thrilled to be in her second WVLO performance! She started acting in Church plays and then at California Theater Center in their children’s program and eventually in a couple of their main stage shows. She loves to tap dance and enjoyed having that opportunity previously as part of the ensemble in “Nice Work If You Can Get It” at WVLO. The opportunity to tap dance again in this production has been an enormous highlight for her! She is so grateful to everyone who has supported her in this show and encouraged her in what she loves to do!”

Kristen Ivers-Williams (Rose, Richie, Erte) Kristen is back for her fourth production with WVLO, having previously appeared in “Nice Work If You Can Get it”, “The Boy Friend” and “Oklahoma!”. A Forensic LCSW and co-owner of Williams Forensic Mental Health Services, Kristen feels grateful and blessed that musical theatre continues to be a mainstay in her life. She is thankful to all those at WVLO who continue to give her the opportunity to sing, dance and perform. She dedicates this performance to her family back in Boston and to her three beautiful daughters, Sophia, Emma & Lilly, who keep the song in her heart and the dance in her step…and who keep her “Runnin’ Wild”!

Dawn Johnson (Ensemble) This will be Dawn’s 34th show with WVLO and to her amusement, the first where she has ever been recruited to be a dancer! She has been SM for nine shows, most recently, last year’s “In The Heights” and has appeared on stage in ten of our productions. The rest of the time she can be found backstage in our tech crew, and was recently the recipient of our Technical Award for the third time! She is a past Captain’s Cape winner and was honored with the Jean Hutchins Award in 2013. In her “real” life, Dawn is the Operations Manager for a radiology practice in San Jose and works part time as a flight attendant for Delta Air Lines. She sends special thanks to her daughter, Stephanie, who is an amazing dancer, for her love and support and to Devin, for taking a chance on her!

Daria Keider (Jeannie, Gansterette, Erte) Daria is back for her fourth production with WVLO, having previously been seen in “A Chorus Line”, and for a short time in “Catch Me If You Can” before she fractured a bone in her foot and as a crew member for “Footloose”. She’s been dancing since the age of 3 and her favorite roles have been Annabel in “Lucky Stiff” and Miranda in‘The Tempest”. A native Californian, Daria is a student at Prospect HS and has danced competitively for three years. Her goal is to study musical theatre on the East Coast.

Shannon Kelly (Eden Brent, Flapper) Shannon makes her debut with WVLO in this production and is very excited to be here. She recently graduated from SJSU with a degree in Musical Theatre. Her theatrical credits include 25 shows, her favorite roles were Joanne Jefferson in “Rent” and Fantine in “Les Miserables”. She hopes you enjoy the show!

Samantha Kinley (Lorna, Atta Girl, Flapper, Erte Girl) Samantha returns for her second show with WVLO, having just performed in “Catch Me If You Can”. She has been performing since she was 12 years old and is a veteran of 24

productions. Her previous roles include Mimi in “Guys & Dolls” and Mrs. Clackett in “Noises Off”. Samantha currently attends WVC with hopes of transferring into a conservatory program next Spring.

Andrew Kracht (David Shayne) Andrew is “sitting on top of the world,” getting to bring to life this leading man in the South Bay premiere of this hilarious musical! Favorite credits include: a tap dancing usher & Russian coachman in “A Day in Hollywood / A Night in the Ukraine” (Constantine) at PAP, your neighborhood shaved ice man in “In the Heights” (Piragua Guy) at WVLO, a tap dancing sinner-sailor in “Anything Goes” (Sailor) at BBBay, a priest & a vampire in “Young Frankenstein” (Transylvania Quartet, Count) at PAP, and the “King of the World” in “Songs for a New World” (Man 1) at SCU. A proud SCU double degree graduate and TBA Adjudicator, Andrew is by day the Box Office, Operations, and Social Media Manager at Palo Alto Players. As always, much love and thanks to his friends and family, and a special thank you to his voice teacher, Pierce Peter Brandt, for always keeping him in vocal shape!

George Mauro (Julian Marx) George finally returns to WVLO for his third production, the other two were back in 2002 (Kiss Me Kate”) and 2008 “Damn Yankees”. His impressive list of theatrical credits during his 40 years of performances include playing Tevye in “Fiddler On The Roof” twice in one year, Kemp in “Young Frankenstein”, Greg in “Sylvia”, Henry Drummond in “Inherit The Wind”, Major General in “Pirates of Penzance”, Felix Unger in “The Odd Couple” and others too numerous to mention. His most unique role was that of a 104 year old Italian great-grandmother at TeatroVision in SJ. His wife, Lennon, has directed him in “Moonlight & Magnolias”, “Fuddy Meers” and “Middle Aged White Guys” so theater is a family affair.

Leslie Newport (Hilda Marx, Hot Dog Man, Gangsterette, Conductor ) Leslie is very pleased to be back with WVLO for her fourth production with WVLO, having recently appeared in “The Boyfriend”, “Fiddler..Roof” and “9 to 5”. She has performed with acapella jazz groups Mission Control and Syncronicity, first place winners in the Reno Jazz Festival and in the Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival. The group also received the award for Downbeat Magazine’s Best Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Grace was the lead singer with a rock band and has performed as a sololist with several Bay Area Big Band orchestras. Her show credits include “Hair”, “Pirates of Penzance” and “Grease”. A UC Berkeley graduate with a degree in Marketing and Finance, she is a Zumba instructor and loves knitting and cooking. She sends much love to Stony, Lucas,

Miles, Chloe, Ollie and the Fan tribe for all their love and support! Big thanks to ST and SD for getting me back to the place I love!!

Ken Powell (Mitch, Gangster) Ken is excited to appear for the second time for WVLO. He was last seen as Agent Branton in “Catch Me If You Can.” He has done lots of shows over the years and considers the stage his second home. You may have seen him as Lazar Wolfe in “Fiddler on the Roof”, or Halloran in “Miracle on 34th Street” at SVCT. You may have also caught some of the shows he has directed, including: “Next to Normal “(SVCT), and “Shrek” (SVCT, SCP). Normally you can find him at Apple trying to make sure your phone doesn’t break. Lastly, he would like to extend a HUGE thanks to Melinda, his wife, who continually makes the dumb choice to say ˜Yes you can do another show.” Thanks Melinda!

Jery Rosas (Cheech) Jery is this former chorus dancer turned FBI agent who for his 19th production with WVLO has joined the dark side as gangster and bully. But fear not, he only pays a visit when it is ABSOLUTELY necessary. He doesn’t mind “getting his hands dirty” since it is just part of the job, but he does have dreams of one day opening his own literary-themed café featuring the NYC’s best opera singers on special occasions. And ONLY the best ones. Don’t want a repear of Palermo. Maybe something overlooking the Gowanus Canal. Thanks for being here and supporting live theatre. I repeat, “THANKS FOR BEING HERE!!”

Robert Summers (Tulio, Frank #3) Robert returns for his 20th production with WVLO. His most memorable was in the role of Jim in “Big River” which earned him the ERMA Award for Best Supporting Actor. Other credits on our stage include roles in “A Chorus Line”, “In The Heights”, “Dames At Sea”, “Jesus Christ, Superstar”, “Cats”, “Aida”, “Damn Yankees”, “Will Rogers Follies”, “42nd Street”, “South Pacific”, “How To Succeed…” “Camelot”, “King & I”, and “Man of La Mancha”. He appeared in SCP’s “Into The Woods” and in “Evita” and “Les Miserables” with the Monterey Peninsula College. He also performed in “A Change Of Heart” with 8Tens and 8 in Santa Cruz and with the San Benito Stage Company in “Les Miserables”, “Spamalot” and “Big River”. He enjoys magic, guitar, soccer and aikido. By day, Robert is a Software Developer for Unicorn Systems. He sends his love to his family for their support.

Molly Thornton (Helen Sinclair) Molly is thrilled to return to West Valley Light Opera after a 10-year hiatus. She has still managed to keep quite busy on Bay Area stages, having just completed a run as Morticia in “The Addams Family” at Coast Rep. Previous West Valley roles include Lowbutt in “Honk!”, Nellie Cohan in “George M!”, Hope in “Anything Goes”, Betty Blake in “The Will Rogers Follies”, as well as ERMA Award-winning performances as Gooch in “Mame!” and Kate in “Kiss Me, Kate.” Other memorable Bay Area roles include the iconic Mama Rose (“Gypsy”, SBMT), Velma Von Tussle (“Hairspray”, SBMT), Raffaela (“Grand Hotel”, SCP), Pennywise (“Urinetown”, SCP), Mrs. Walker (“The Who’s Tommy”, CLTC) and Aldonza (“Man of La Mancha”, SBMT). Other theatrical credits include SBMT’s productions of “The Bridges Of Madison County”, “Fiorello”, “The Music Man”, “Guys & Dolls”, “Promises, Promises”, “Funny Girl”, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels”, “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” and “Kiss Me, Kate”. Bob Visini (Nick Valenti) Bob brings over 40 years of professional and community theatre experience to the stage. He is honored to appear again with WVLO where he was last featured in “Bells Are Ringing”. Bob’s more recent theatrical roles include “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” (Lawrence Jameson), “Promises, Promises” (Dr. Dreyfuss), “The Producers” (Roger DeBris), “The Music Man”(Harold Hill), “Beauty and the Beast” (Lumiere), “Bye, Bye, Birdie” (Mr. MacAfee), “La Cage aux Folles” (Georges), “The Pajama Game” (Prof. Hines) and “Annie”(Daddy Warbucks). Bob is a semi-retired marketing executive and lives in Sunnyvale.

Waffles (Mr. Woofles) Waffles is over the moon to be debuting on the WVLO stage. She was rescued from a terrible puppy mill situation and fostered by her “Mama” Leandra in 2014 along with her 3 puppies (Tessie, Elektra and Mazzepa) before finding her forever home with her “Daddy”, Tony Gonzales (Warner). Today she can be seen at various intermissions at local theaters with her daughter (and understudy) Tessie-Chicken or making new friends during rehearsals. Woof! Woof!

Jen Wheatonfox (Ellen) Jen’s thrilled to be back again for her second show at WVLO! For the last few years Jen’s been busy; conspiring with the Devil (Lola, “Damn Yankees”, FMT), wallowing (then triumphing) in a quagmire of self-inflicted incarceration in a Florida “double-wide” (Jeannie, “The Great American Trailer Park Musical”, LASC), and giving birth to a half-human, half-bat baby (Meredith, “Bat Boy”, LASC). Her most recent adventure revolved around a mysteriously violent Midwestern pastry concoction (Kitty,“The Drowsy Chaperone”, SCP). Always jazzed to add another great roaring 20’s tale (with Gangsters!) to her growing list: (Roxie in “Chicago”, Stage 1 Theatre) and (Dora in “Fiorello”, SBMT), She thanks her amazing family (Steve, Zo, and Jack) for tolerating her theatre habit! www.jenwheatonfox.com

Patti Workover (Kay, Betty, Johnny, Gangsterette, Erte) Patti is proud to be in the cast of Bullets Over Broadway. This is her first performance with WVLO and she’s excited to tap dance for the first time since HS. Her past performances include “City of Angels” with SBMT and “A Christmas Carol” with Northside Theatre Company. She works as a field site supervisor for the SJ Conservation Corps where she teaches students how to maintain trails. Patti would also like to thank her husband for his support during the busy rehearsal schedule.

WHO’S WHO ON OUR STAFFElizabeth Dale (Producer) Elizabeth has been with this Association for 30 years and has served in almost every staff position in addition to assisting most of the other positions. She produced the first show of our last season, “In The Heights” and assisted on the other two productions. She has served on the Board of Directors for several years and receives continuous support from her husband, Lester, and daughter, Julie. Liz is one of our most valued volunteers!Earl Masuda (Assistant Producer) This show marks Earl’s 25th WVLO production since 2008! He’s been in the Cast or Crew or on the Staff. Earl’s favorite role was being in the quartet in “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do” in 2010. He thanks his wife, Pat, for putting up with her husband’s crazy schedule, and his sons, Matt and Chris, for putting up with their dad’s always saying, “I have something to do at the theater!” Lastly, Earl thanks his family

and friends for their continued support. Nancy Kwong (Associate Producer) Nancy returns for her 18th assignment in her 38 years of involvement with WVLO. She just served as Producer for our final show of the season, “Catch Me If You Can” which was the recipient of our annual ERMA Award for Best Show!! She has performed, choreographed and served as a Board Member throughout her involvement with this Association. She earned her BA Degree from CSU and her Masters in Speech

Pathology from SJSU. She applies those teaching skills in the OGSD and in her spare time, keeps in touch with her 2 busy boys, Cameron and Riley.

Robin Aronson (Director) Robin has a M.A. and Ph.D. in Theatre Arts. She teaches theatre and acting at Cabrillo College and has directed for Cabrillo TheatreArts, Santa Cruz Actors’ Theatre, Mountain Community Theater, Friends of Gus, Kids on Broadway, and others. Directing credits include: “Beauty and the Beast”, “Fiddler on the Roof”, “Singin’ in the Rain”, “Crazy for You”, “The Pajama Game”, “A Funny Thing… Forum”, “Cinderella”,

“Quilters”, “Noises Off”, and many others, too numerous to mention. As an actor, Robin toured for 9 years with Theatre of All Possibilities, performing “Worlds of Wisdom”, “Spirit of America” and “Herstory”, with and for kids, throughout the Bay Area. She recently played Masha in MCT’s “Tanya, Sonia, Masha and Spike”, and will play Portia in “Julius Caesar” in the spring. Thank you, WVLO!!!

Amanda Ku (Music & Vocal Director) Amanda is excited to return to WVLO this season as a music director, having played keyboard 1 last season for “In the Heights” and “Catch Me If You Can”. Past MD credits include: “Sweeney Todd”, “Gypsy”, “Songs For a New World”, and “Disenchanted!” (San Diego tryout). Amanda regularly plays piano for musicals around the South Bay and Peninsula, most recently “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”

(CMTSJ, Hillbarn). She is currently a staff accompanist for Cantabile Youth Singers of Silicon Valley. Many thanks to Jesse and Liz for this opportunity, and everyone who has supported her musical endeavors along the way.

Devin Adler (Choreographer/Ensemble) Devin is thrilled to be back at WVLO! Recent choreography credits include “Peter Pan”, “Madagascar”, “Wizard Of Oz” & “Mary Poppins” (PRT), “Big” (Forest Theatre Guild) and “Spamalot” (Carmel HS). Recent show credits include his first show with WVLO, “Nice Work If You Can Get It”, then “A Chorus Line” and “Catch Me If You Can”. He also performed in “Wizard Of Oz”, “Anything Goes”, “West Side

Story”, and “White Christmas”. A major highlight was performing in a TED Talk alongside Andrew Nemr (TED Fellows Retreat 2016). Devin has had thorough training in tap, jazz, ballet, and partner dancing and teaches and coaches dance and musical theatre throughout the Monterey Peninsula and Northern California.

Stephen C . Wathen (Production Set Designer) Stephen brings his set designs to our stage for his 77th production with WVLO! His most recent work was last season’s opening production of “In The Heights”. His stunning, realistic and beautiful scenic drops have been part of our most memorable musicals, namely, “White Christmas”, “Sound Of Music”, “Desert Song” & “Seven Brides… Brothers” and many more, too numerous to mention. His

extensive list of credits covers more than 400 stage production, 25 movies and over 100 TV series, an animator for the Gumby TV series and a special effects designer for George Lucas films. He wrote the scripts and designed the sets for his original productions of “Dracula” and “The Three Musketeers” presented at Ohlone College. We’re always delighted when Stephen brings his talents to our musicals.

Michael Glenn Munoz (Lighting Designer) Michael marks his 56th production with WVLO, having created the lighting design for “In The Heights” last season. His most recent design was seen on the stage for SBMT’s “The Bridges Of Madison County”, but he also has design credits with CCMT, SCPL, SCP, Teatro Vision, LTSJ, Woodminster Amphitheater and dozens of other musicals for SBMT. He earned his BA in Fine Arts from SJSU

with a Minor in Dance.

Brian Foley (Sound Designer) Brian has worked in various technical staff positions with South Bay theater companies in the last several years. He just finished Sound Designing SBMT’s “The Bridges of Madison County” and recently made his debut as stage manager for their production of “My Fair Lady”. Other recent shows include, “1776”, “City of Angels”, and “Forever Plaid” at SBMT; “Shrek” and “Rent” at SCP; and “Next to Normal” at

SVCT. He is incredibly thankful for the support and the friends he has made, and is looking forward to more theatrical adventures. Brian is a copier technician by trade, who enjoys snowboarding and roller coasters, but what he really enjoys most is when someone finds him after the show and buys him a beer (hint hint).

Mike MacKenzie (Co-Stage Manager) This will mark Mike’s 44th production with WVLO, having most recently co-stage managing “A Chorus Line” and “Catch Me If You Can”. The majority of his time on the crew is spent choreographing the set moves , but he often dons a character costume to appear onstage (whch he did in the last show). He’s a retired electronics tech and his hobbies are photography and his lovely wife, Cay, not necessarily in that

order. He also loves to travel, but he especially enjoys ‘manipulating’ the sets and his crew!

Dave Raiman (Co-Stage Manager) Dave has been with our WVLO family since 1991 and has been involved in many productions ever since. He most recently served as Sound Designer for “In The Heights” and Co-Stage Manager for both “A Chorus Line” and “Catch Me If You Can”. He was the recipient of the prestigious Jean Hutchins Award for the 2009–2010 season and like Mike, has been coerced to don a tuxedo and dance in our ballroom

scenes. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois in Computer Engineering and serves as our Web Master so we’re very happy to have his expert internet services maintaining our web site.

Lisa Armenta (Costume Team) Lisa has enjoyed being a part of the costume team for “Bullets Over Broadway”, and she would like to thank Sue and Judy for showing her the ropes. Lisa learned to sew in her Grandma’s kitchen during summer visits and feels fortunate for the opportunity to share her love of sewing with WVLO and the Westmont Technical Theater students who she has mentored over the past 4 years. When she is not sewing, Lisa works as an

Occupational Therapist at a local elementary school.

Christine Ormseth (Hair & Make-up Design) Christine is happy to be back designing hair and makeup for WVLO! She was previously in “A Chorus Line” in the ensemble but designing is where her passion lies.
