PERFORMING ARTS @ ANGLO-CHINESE SCHOOL (INDEPENDENT)
ABOUT US The school campus of ACS (Independent) is always bustling with activity; a casual walk after curriculum hours around the school grounds will almost always provide glimpses into the wide array of interests that our students have, one of which is in the performing arts. ACS (Independent) boasts a diverse range of Performing Arts Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs) to suit the various needs and hone the artistic talents of our Year 1-4 Secondary and Year 5-6 International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme students. The CCAs include:
1. Choir (Sec) and Vocal ACcord (IB) 2. Cultural Performing Arts Club (Sec and IB) 3. Drama Club (Sec) and Independent Stage (IB) 4. Dance Venia (Year 3-4 and IB) 5. Guitar Orchestra (Sec and IB) 6. Philharmonic Orchestra (Sec and IB) 7. Symphonic Band (Sec) and Wind Ensemble (IB)
All Performing Arts CCAs are actively involved in major school events including but not limited to Founder’s Day, Open House and Honours’ Day. They have also made their mark at a national level through their participation in various public performances, community outreach events and competitions such as the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation (SYF AP).
PERFORMING ARTS NIGHT FESTIVAL Tonight, ACS (Independent) proudly presents its third Performing Arts Night Festival. Launched in 2015, this biennial event is held in alternation with the Festival of Art (a series of concerts by each CCA across the year). Both festivals serve as platforms for our students to put up quality performances that provide arts exposure to the ACS community and beyond. More importantly, these festivals celebrate our school’s Performing Arts as an integrated community that stands together for the cause of ACS forever.

CHOIR (SECONDARY) &
VOCAL ACCORD (IB)
ACS (Independent) Choir and Vocal ACcord have always been an integral part of the ACSian experience, exposing people to the beauty of singing. Be it choral music or contemporary pop, they will sing their hearts out and their aim is simple: to inspire others with their voices. Other than coming together to perform for school events such as
Founder’s Day Service and National Day Celebrations, they also have their individual performances and events.
The Choir participates regularly in Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation and Festival of Arts. In 2018, they collaborated with the Drama Club to put together The Prince of Egypt musical. For the past 3 years, the Choir had hosted choral exchange where choristers from participating schools learn, sing, and perform together, with friendships forged and memories treasured. The Choir also takes part in choral events out of school, for instance performing with the Vienna Boys Choir in 2018 and Singapore Symphony Orchestra in SSO-Pops in 2019.
Vocal ACcord , on the other hand, put on a concert titled “ A C FM ” in 2018 and is currently zealously preparing for a concert titled “ The Time of My Life ” in May. Outreach to the community beyond the school ground with carolling singing is another key area, and Vocal ACcord members have been working with St. Luke’s Hospital annually to bring songs and joy to their patients during the festive season.
Be it learning from our experienced conductors or just chillaxing with friends in the CCA, the Choir and Vocal ACcord will always be a great place for music, laughter, friends and family.

CULTURAL PERFORMING ARTS CLUB The Cultural Performing Arts Club aims to provide excellently-crafted and meticulously fine-tuned performances that exhibit values in Chinese, Malay and Indian arts and cultures.
The Chinese arts and cultures are promoted through both a Festive Drum group and a Chinese Drama team. The former often opens major school events such as Founder’s Day, National Day and Honours Day celebrations, while the latter puts up their own productions annually during concerts such as the Festival of Arts. ACS (Independent) has also been increasingly exposed to Malay arts and culture in recent years through regular performances by the Malay section of CPAC. These performances range from poetry recital to drama skits, and from Dikir Barat (Choral Singing) to Kompang performances at various events and celebrations throughout the school year. CPAC members also have the opportunity to be exposed to Indian arts; this is predominantly achieved through music, with students learning and performing on Indian drums such as the Mridangam and Doh. The various cultural sections at times come together for a Combined Drums team as well, and perform an uplifting prologue at major school events or at community celebrations upon invitation. The Cultural Performing Arts Club aims to bring joy and cultural diversity to the school and each of their performances never fail to engage and amaze the audience. DANCE VENIA Dance Venia was formed in ACS (Independent) in 2005. ‘Venia’ is a Latin word which means ‘In God’s Grace’. Dance Venia does not specialize in an individual form of dance. Instead, it cross-trains and exposes members and the wider school community to various genres. To date, they have endeavoured various forms of dance such as Hip-Hop, Jazz, Contemporary, Modern, Cha-Cha, Jive, Samba, Salsa,
Ballet and even Water Ballet. Past accolades include public performances at Ngee Ann City, and winning the Open Category at Danceworks! They regularly perform at official school events such as the annual Lunar New Year concert and unofficially at events such as ACSemble and the annual Teacher’s Day concert. Their performances often garner rave reviews and tickets for their biennial Festival of Arts showcase sell very well. Membership in Dance Venia is open for students from Years 3 onwards. DRAMA CLUB (SECONDARY) &
INDEPENDENT STAGE (IB) The drama scene in ACS (Independent) is spread across two separate divisions. The ACS (Independent) Drama Club allows Secondary 1-4 students who have an interest in theatre and drama to practise and showcase
their talents to the school. Members are not only trained to explore acting as a form of art, but also provided with an all-round learning experience and appreciation for the theatre. Besides acting, club members perform a diverse range of tasks; from working on sets for performances to creation and design of costumes, as well as lighting and sound design. This has allowed students to specialise and hone their skills in specific aspects of theatre, while having a fully rounded theatre experience. ACS (Independent) Stage is the senior division and is made up of Year 5 and 6 students. The club was formed in 2006 by a group of students who were deeply passionate about drama and wanted to continue pursuing this interest in their IBDP years. The inaugural performance of ACS (Independent) Stage in 2007, featuring Peter Shaffer’s Black Comedy, was a great success and proved to be just the first of many outstanding productions – the most recent being the club’s revival of Black Comedy in a completely new version in July 2018. ACS (Independent) Stage also makes a habit of putting on more informal free performances every year, known generically as Assortments , often in collaboration with the Drama Club. Both groups have always been and will continue to be a source of entertainment for the ACS (Independent) student body, adding colour and flavour to the school life of each individual through the artistic talent of all their enthusiastic members. PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA Founded in 1926, the Philharmonic Orchestra has a rich and illustrious history and has distinguished itself as one of the leading school orchestras in the nation. The orchestra’s calendar year is always filled with a diverse range of meaningful events; members have plenty of opportunities to explore
different repertoire and the orchestra puts up performances of consistently high standards at school events and celebrations, the biennial SYF (AP), as well as outreach events to engage the wider-community. There are also exchange programmes with other school orchestras and even with the Orchestra of Music Makers (OMM) and their esteemed Music Director Prof. Chan Tze Law. Apart from preparing for performances and competitions, the orchestra also prides itself in being a group that has plenty of fun and fellowship through all sorts of activities. Be it friendly inter-section or chamber competitions, sports and games, catching a concert or going for a movie together, the orchestra is one that brings like-minded students together, allows them to forge friendships that last a lifetime, and provides a strong sense of belonging and community.
