We are delighted to continue working with our awarding body The University Arts London , a specialist provider for Performing and Production Arts only available for Colleges and Universities.

This is not the same as a school BTEC qualification

    What is this qualification?

The UAL Diploma and Extended Diploma in performing Arts are designed for young people who want to study performance or production for the performing arts full time. They will equip you with the knowledge, skills and understanding to progress to degree level study as well as providing essential skills for employment within the creative arts industries.

    Why this qualification?

UAL Awarding Body is a specialist awarding body for the creative and performing arts and part of the University of the Arts, London. The qualification has been designed in collaboration with leading performing arts specialists and is working at the ‘cutting-edge’ of what is happening today in the creative sector. The qualification demands that the student works as a reflective theatre practitioner.

    Where will it lead?

The qualification will support you to choose specialist areas of study and to progress successfully into Higher Education, employment or self employment as a theatre maker.

The Extended Diploma Distinction has up to 168 UCAS points. That is the equivalent of 3 A* at A level!

    Induction Week — Monday 2nd September 2019

This is a week where you get the run of the campus before any second year students

return and part time classes start.

There is a lot of form filling during this week, which is unavoidable, but means that we

can make sure that we have everything in place for your course to run smoothly.

Don’t forget to bring a pen!

You may be asked to attend talks and be asked to think about the sort of culture you

    want within your group.

You will take part in various activities during induction week. You will meet students in

your year group and also students on other courses at The Arts and Media Campus.

There will be acting, dance and singing workshops to introduce you to your key tutors

and demonstrate the work that you will be following during your programme of study.

You will also meet Maths, English and A Level tutors (if applicable).

We will also be checking that you are on the correct level of course so there may be some

    swapping around.

There will be a timetable specifically for this week to let you know where to go and what

you will be doing. We will also be introducing your first term timetable.

There are a lot of people here to help you so don’t be afraid to ask!

    Work Placement

If you are 16-18 years when you start your course you are required to complete 35 hours of work placement as part of your programme of study.

Your work placement should form a valuable part of your learning programme and provide you with opportunities to develop your skills, which will support you in your future progression.

When do I complete my work placement?

We would recommend that you try to secure, and complete your work placement during the first term. As when you return to college after the Christmas Break in January 2020you will be busy with rehearsals, shows and your blogs.

Your work placement needs to be completed around your college timetable and can be done as a block placement (1 week) or by weekly attendance (1 day a week for 5 weeks). It can also be done on evenings and weekends.

Where can I complete my work placement?

It’s up to you! Where would you like to complete it?

Previously some students have completed their placement in Theatres and dance schools whilst others have decided to increase their transferable skills and confi-dence to support them gaining employment.

Your work placement doesn’t have to be related to your course, but it does need to be relevant and beneficial to you. Where you go all depends on what they want to get from your work placement!

Any employers who offer work placement must be able to provide us with their Em-ployers Liability Insurance details.

    What do to

Have a think about where you would like to gain work experience and if you can, make contact with employers to ask if they could offer you a placement – use any contacts you already have (speak to family & friends to see if they can help) or

    contact employers directly.

    I’ve secured my placement

Fantastic! If you secure your placement, all you need to do is pass the employer’s contact name, telephone number and email address to Beverley so that she can make contact and finalise arrangements.

I need help with finding a placement

If you are struggling to find work experience Beverley, Student Services will support you to source a placement when you start.

Got a question? Please speak to Beverley, Student Services

  • Acting is a talent you have been gifted with, a skill that can grow, mature and progress.

The rewards are immense but the input required from you is also huge and requires great

commitment and self-motivation. You will push the boundaries of your comfort zone, be

embarrassed and get criticized on your ability so you can continually develop yourself.

You will be taught the skills to become a reflective practitioner; you will constantly be asked

to reflect on an activity and work out in detail what you have discovered about the task,

yourself or the wider context of performance and production; you will become avid

researchers using primary and secondary sources— not Wikipedia—to back up, expand and

explore the point you are making.

Through a series of collaborative Industry projects, for example, creating characters for

example performing at Torchlight. You will discover:

Techniques to explore the characters you create with imagination

Improve your vocal range, expression and projection

Improvisation, devising and self & peer directing

    Self– employment & entrepreneurial skills

    As a starting point...

    Acting

    Acting for camera workshop

Don’t forget to bring the following

Named notebook and pen or if you prefer you can bring a smart device if

    you have one

Movement clothes (see Dance section for details)

Packed lunch or money to purchase refreshments and/or lunch

Water bottle— we have water machines around College, so you can refill

    whenever you need to.

Your new course will feel very different to other courses that you have been on.

For some students the early stages can be quite confusing, new building,

new routines, and new people but hang in there -it’s worth it!

If you’re unsure of anything, just ask!

How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying

  • The study of dance at Kendal College is a dynamic journey of self discovery.

The vibrant atmosphere here in college is the starting point for your career within

the dance industry. In all courses, dance will cover a wide range of genres and

    styles.

All students will study: Contemporary, Jazz, Ballet, Street, Tap, Body Maintenance,

    Choreography.

Your flare for dance will be nurtured through fundamental dance techniques. Your

creative potential will be unlocked as you learn the art of choreography. Students

create work collaboratively and independently for public performance.

Your performance skills are developed throughout the course in a wide range of

environments. These are essential tools for a dancer or choreographer to learn.

To support practical skills, students will also learn the theoretical and analytical

aspects of dance. These might range from dance terminology to critical studies,

where students reflect and evaluate their own and others’ dance works.

Beverley is our Student Services Advisor and is based at Reception. She can give

you information, advice and guidance on any aspect of College, e.g. careers &

courses, finance, wellbeing, transport, childcare, Class Reps, Student Ambassadors

    and much more.

Students are encouraged to make the most of college life, by getting involved in

student representation, events and activities. As well as your course, there are

many opportunities for you to meet others, develop skills and enjoy your time at

    College. These can include:

Class Reps Students elect class representatives (reps) in the Autumn Term. Class Reps are responsible for finding out what students in their class think about their course, college services and their experience as a whole. They represent these views at Student Council meetings and at Principal’s Question Time.

Student Ambassadors The College recruits a team of around 20 Student Ambassadors to help promote the College at open days and school events. This is a great opportunity for students to meet others and develop their skills. If you have a question, please just ask!
