Performing Arts 2017

Jesuit schools were among the first to recognise the importance of the Arts in educating the whole person. Dramatic performances, orchestral music, opera and ballet were all performed in Jesuit schools in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The cultivation of our aesthetic sense, to nurture our sense of wonder, to develop the imagination and to encourage the creative life, fosters a greater awareness of God in all things. Enshrined in the principle of cura personalis – concern for the individual – is the development of his or her own special talents.

Our ideal of the vir eloquens – the eloquent person – ensures that these talents can be gracefully and confidently expressed.

The Performing Arts at Saint Ignatius' College Riverview are vibrant and extensive, with students presenting a diverse range of activities and repertoire. Performances are of the highest order and this is a credit to the wonderful Music and Drama staff, and the boys involved.

Enjoy with us the performances of 2017 detailed in this booklet.

“The Wiz” Senior School MusicalSENIOR SCHOOL MUSICAL | RAMSAY HALL

WEDNESDAY 8 TO SATURDAY 11 MARCH 7.30PM

Our 2017 musical is the The Wiz, which is based on the The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This musical won seven Tony Awards including Best Musical in 1975. The original was with an Afro-American cast and theme and this is the reason that this musical is not often performed outside the US. The film adaptation starred Michael Jackson and Dianna Ross with the score re-orchestrated by the music genius, Quincy Jones. We have based our version on the NBC Live version of this musical performed in December 2016. This is a not-to-be missed event as our senior school musicals at Riverview are always nothing short of spectacular.

YEAR 8 STUDENTS | O ’KELLY THEATRE

WEDNESDAY 29 AND THURSDAY 30 MARCH 6 .30PM

Monty Python presents – Live at Riverview Written by John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam and

Terry Jones. compiled by Louise Arnott

And now for something completely different… Monty Python's Flying Circus is one of the most influential comedy programmes produced on television. Five Englishmen led by John Cleese and Graham Chapman, gathered together with an expatriate American in the spring of 1969 to break the rules. The result first aired on the BBC October 1969 and has influenced countless future comedians.

Our Year 8 Riverview production of these hilarious sketches will be a series of short comic scenes from the famous Flying Circus. The wonderful skills of Year 8 Riverview comic actors will bring to life all the best elements of Monty Python’s famous farce: the surreal, the risqué, the intellectual wit, the silly and most importantly leave our audience laughing at the mayhem and madness of our everyday lives.

Shuddersome: Tales of Poe Written by Edgar Allen Poe and adapted by Lindsay Price

“Once upon a midnight dreary, While I pondered, weak and weary, Over many a quaint and curious Volume of forgotten lore...”

The thumping of a heartbeat. The creek of a door. The howl of a bitter wind. The gong of a clock tower. The clang of alarm bells. The sound of beating wings getting closer and closer…

Spectres, ghosts and ghouls come alive in this vivid theatrical adaptation of some of Edgar Allen Poe’s best-known works. Included are The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven, and The Masque of the Red Death.

Poe’s words rise from the page like corpses from the grave. Be careful. Do you hear that tap, tap, tapping?
