El pasado jueves, 15 de septiembre se llevó a cabo la ceremonia de premiación de la exhibición anual Celebrando los Artistas y el Arte de la Cultura Hispana en el Centro para las Artes de Osceola. En la foto aparece los ganadores junto al Sr. Guillermo Hansen, Miembro de la Junta del Centro y los Comisionados de la Ciudad de Kissimmee Wanda Rentas y el Vice - Alcalde Art Otero.

La recepción de apertura y ceremonia de premiación tuvo lugar el jueves, 15 de septiembre de 2011.La exhibición estará disponible hasta el 26 de

septiembre y presenta el trabajo de 18 artistas del área de la Florida Central llegando tan lejos como Miami. El evento presentará artistas hispanos/latinos al igual que cualquier artista que sometió un trabajo describiendo la cultura hispana. Los ganadores son: 1er Lugar y $100 – Felipe

Kissimmee, FL - The Osceola Center for the Arts announced the winners for the 3rd Annual Celebrating Hispanic Artists and Culture art show. The opening reception and awards ceremony took place on Thursday, September 15, 2011.

The exhibit will be on display through September 26, 2011 and showcases the work of 18 artists from around Central Florida and as far away as Miami. This event displays Hispanic/Latino artists and any artist who submitted artwork depicting Hispanic culture.

Kissimmee, FL – The Osceola Center for the Arts is now taking registrations for their Center Youth String Orchestra program which begins this October.Students must be in at least the 3rd grade to

apply, must have their own string instrument and will be required to audition. Instruction will take place on select Saturdays from 9am-11am and tuition for one season is $250. The Youth String Orchestra will perform in 3 concerts at the Osceola Center for the Arts as well as at various Osceola community events throughout the year.

along with him. His performance was electric and powerful showing that he

is still one of the best singers in the world.

After the show Goya Foods donated 10,000 pounds of

food to the Coalition for the Homeless on behalf of Marc Anthony. This donation was part of the 75,000 pounds that Goya Food will

be donating to local selected charities by the

performing artist. Part of their

Osceola County, FL -September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month. The Osceola School District is making serious efforts to combat childhood obesity. The district’s Wellness Program outlines specific goals and standards for food sold on campus and physical activity. The School Meals Program follows the USDA nutrition guidelines for lower fat, sugar, calories, and nutrients. Schools offer low-fat or fat free milk; fresh fruit and vegetables daily; whole grain breads; and water is available for all students. In addition, foods are baked not fried, and snacks are single serving which are lower in fat and sugar. All schools are in partnership with the Alliance

for a Healthier Generation and the USDA Team Nutrition Education Program, which promotes a healthy eating and activity. All elementary schools are required to have 150 minutes and middle schools are required to have 225 minutes of physical education per week. Individual schools are also planning a variety of upcoming wellness activities, such as “jump-a-thon” at Parkway Middle, a poetry contest on the importance of fitness at Koa Elementary, and healthy cooking classes for the students at Sunrise Elementary to name a few. A blind young man who transmits his feelings through his majestic voice that reaches deep into the soul. With them, the colossal conduction of the director Dirk Meyer of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Orlando; together with his talented musicians, and its violins, violas, Chellos, flutes, oboes, clarinets, trumpets and many other musical instruments, gave a touch of distinction to each interpretation. St. Cloud, FL - Ruth Tavarez was employed with the City of St. Cloud as a police officer for four (4) years. On 09-18-2011, St. Cloud Police officers responded to Ruth Tavarez’s residence within the city limits of St. Cloud in reference to a disturbance call. When officers arrived it was determined during the investigation that Tavarez had committed battery her live-in boyfriend. He received minor injuries. As a result of the investigation, it was determined that Tavarez would be placed under arrest for Battery/ Domestic violence. During the arrest Tavarez resisted and kicked one of the officers in the upper thigh. Tavarez was placed in custody and transported to the Osceola County Jail for the Charges of Battery/ Domestic violence, resisting an Officer with Violence and Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer.Tavarez was released from her

employment with the City of St. Cloud on Monday, 09-19-11, for previous administrative reasons.

en Lakeland el 24 de Julio en el estadio Henley Field, donde FL Cardinals vence por 8-2 a los Rays convirtiéndose en tetracampeones. Durante este emocionante

This team is the current two-time world champions of the amateur major leagues and has won the USSSA Adult Baseball League championship (wood bat) for the fourth consecutive time. In the most recent years, during these four tournaments, the Cardinals have defeated the best teams from Miami, Orlando, Palm Beach, Pinellas, Daytona, Kissimmee, SW Florida, Lakeland, and Tampa.The Cardinals are not only a Latino team with passion

for baseball, they represent countries where this sport is a culture, for example Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Cuba; nations where parents purchase a glove, ball and bat as soon as kids are born. These kids are today’s Florida Cardinals.This most recent tournament started in Jupiter, Fl. during

the 4th of July weekend. Five games were played within a 3 days span, including the semifinals where the Cardinals eliminated the Miami Red Sox and the Orlando Rays won against Team USA of Miami. Both the Cardinals and the Rays were to play for the championship but the game was postponed due to severe thunderstorms.The championship game took place in Lakeland, Fl. at

Henley Field Stadium on July 24. This is the 4th. tournament in a row that the Florida Cardinals have won, defeating the Rays 8-2 and becoming tournament champs. about stem cells but I still don’t understand what they are.Can you explain? This is the most complicated topic I’ve covered in this column, so I can understand why you have questions about it. The subject is so vast that I’m going to present it in two parts. Here goes: In your body, you have specialized cells

that make up your brain, blood, bones and other anatomical parts. Stem cells are not specialized; they are master cells. Stem cells divide to form specialized

cells or new stem cells. There are two basic forms of stem cells—embryonic and adult.Embryonic stem cells come from embryos that are a few days old. These cells can divide into more stem cells or any type of body cell. Embryonic stem cells have the greatest capacity to regenerate or repair diseased tissue in people. The extraction of embryonic stem cells destroys embryos. There’s been controversy about embryonic stem cells because some people believe that scientists are taking human lives during extraction. “Adult stem cells” is a misnomer used to describe stem cells found in adult tissues, children, placentas and umbilical cords. Some scientists now use the term somatic (body) stem cell. Adult stem cells are often present in only small quantities. The primary functions of adult stem

cells are to maintain and repair tissue.

The conventional wisdom has been that adult stem cells create only one kind of specialized cell, but a new theory suggests that these cells may have the potential to do more. For example, bone-marrow stem cells responsible for producing blood might be able to make nerve tissue. Recently, researchers reported creating stem cells by altering the genes in adult skin cells. These new cells acted like embryonic stem cells, according to these scientists. The research in converting adult cells into embryonic stem cells is in its very early stages.There are three classes of stem cells:

totipotent, multipotent, and pluripotent. A fertilized egg is totipotent; it has total potential. It can lead to all the different types of cells in the body. Stem cells that can lead to a small number of different cell types are multipotent. Pluripotent stem cells can give rise to any type of cell in the body except those required to develop a fetus. Stem cells can be used to create “lines,”

which are cell cultures that can be grown indefinitely in the laboratory and then

frozen for storage. Studying stem cells will help us understand how they transform into specialized cells. The causes of cancer and birth defects could be found somewhere in this process. Once scientists understand cell development, they may be able to correct the errors that cause these medical conditions. Donated organs and tissues are often used to replace those that are diseased or destroyed. Unfortunately, the number of people needing a transplant far exceeds the number of organs available for transplantation. Another potential application of stem

cells is making cells and tissues for medical therapies. Stem cells offer the possibility of a renewable source of replacement cells and tissues to treat many medical problems including Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s diseases, spinal cord injury, stroke, burns, heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Detectives, in conjunction with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) obtained a search warrant for the residence and located bomb making materials. All six occupants of the residence were taken into custody and interviewed by detectives. Based on the information, detectives discovered Nelson was responsible for the detonation of a pipe bomb at the Citgo gas station located at 3297 S. John Young Parkway in Kissimmee earlier this year. No one was injured in the incident. Detectives arrested Nelson and he was booked into the Osceola County Jail on a $10,500 bond. The investigation is on-going with additional charges pending.
