By continually developing our own

technologies, selecting the most

appropriate of those already available,

and working with a wide range of parts

suppliers, we create engines which provide

fresh solutions – and deliver a breath of

fresh air for our customers.

Perkins leads the way in diesel engine development. That is why many Perkins engines already comply with Tier 4 Interim / Stage IIIB / MLIT Step 4 requirements. And on our continuing journey of product improvement, we’re already well on the way to Tier 4 Final and beyond.

Perkins believe in building engines which help you to succeed. Whether that means applying the latest technology, or developing new technology to meet a specific need, you can be sure we lead the way.

We already have over 1,000 standard

configuration options, with the potential for

millions of specifications. We also have a

dedicated team of applications engineers

working on developing tailored solutions

for specific customer applications – even

thinking beyond the hardware to optimise

the entire system if required.

Our customers tell us a two-day TIW can reduce their production lead time by six months.

In advance of the TIW, applications

engineers use a Computer Aided Design

model of the application to create an engine

design specification. The TIW itself gives

our customer the opportunity to further

discuss the technologies used to optimise

the engine’s performance and enable the

creation of a virtual installation.

Beyond the Workshop Where appropriate, we are also able to build

a prototype for installation in the customer’s

application. If necessary, our applications

team will then make a site visit to resolve

any issues arising after installation.

So before a single full production

part has been assembled, the

customer has the proven

optimum engine solution

for their needs.

Perkins’ Technology Integration Workshops (TIWs) are a fresh and unique approach to developing engines for specific customer applications. By bringing together a customer and our comprehensive expertise, in one place and at one time, we realise quicker, more effective results.

Techno logy I n teg ra t i on Workshops – a Un ique approach t o deve lop ing eng ines .

Achieving world-class integration of engine

and application requires total collaboration

between customer and engine manufacturer:

the basis of our ‘design once’ philosophy.

By working together from the earliest stages

of design and development, we aim to build

an engine which successfully meets our

customers’ criteria from the outset, with no

need for time-consuming, costly redesign.

And no matter how compact the installation,

we have used our wide choice of options,

to find the right solution for our customers.

How our TIWs work Our TIWs take place either at our own

Collaboration Centre or a distributor’s

premises, and they are created specifically

for each customer. A typical agenda would

include legislation, a product overview,

emissions technology, aftertreament,

engine architecture and performance,

and a virtual installation.

Among those attending a TIW will be our

legislative experts, applications engineers,

design architects and marketing specialists,

to ensure the customer gets the right

engine for their application.

Page 4: Perkins Tier 4 engines brochure

Our continual product improvement and

development means that we have a wide

range of options available to meet our

customers’ needs. The flexibility this

provides means that however new, unusual

or challenging the application, we will

have the technology to handle it.

A lifetime of low costThere is a range of options for reducing

emission levels to comply with legislation.

Perkins applies the relevant solution

depending on the requirements of

the application.

Our Diesel Particulate Filters, for example,

all meet the required standards for

emissions reduction, but in a number of

different ways with different benefits.

Our continual regeneration version is

completely – and uniquely – service-free,

whilst the aftertreatment technology in our

1206E-E70TTA six-cylinder engine has its

own regeneration heat source, so it can be

positioned at a distance from the engine

for greater design flexibility. Additionally,

when quieter running is a consideration,

a DPF eliminates the need for a muffler.

Our Hydraulic Lash Adjustment

eliminates another end-user servicing

task, and also provides greater flexibility

in packaging.

Common rail fuel injection is utilised

throughout the Perkins engine family.

By injecting fuel at high pressure, it creates

smaller fuel droplets which burn more

efficiently – producing less ash and

improving fuel economy.

Dependable powerOur enhanced electronics, together with

improved diagnostic capability through an

increased number of sensors, ensure our

engines’ reliability, and quicker and easier

repairs should they ever be required. Our

focus on integration also helps us to create

a power train and machine control system

which truly work together for greater

efficiency, dependability and durability.

Reduced NOxWe have achieved our aim of reducing NOx

emissions without the need for an additional

fluid. Our NOx Reduction System

recirculates exhaust gases and reduces

emissions at source.

Despite the reduction in engine package size, our latest models have increased power by up to 40% over previous versions, with a corresponding torque increase of up to 60%.

What keeps technology fresh is its application to real problems in the real world – and particularly to creating an improved environment. We establish what our customers want, then develop the new technologies required to meet their demands, equip their applications and overcome their challenges.

The state-of-the-art technology to be found in Perkins engines is built on a heritage stretching back more than 70 years.

As well as dependable and cost-effective engines, our customers have the peace of mind that comes from the support of our global network of experienced distributors, and our range of support options.

Our global network has to meet our

exceptionally high standards of training,

and maintain the equipment and stock

levels we specify. Regular auditing ensures

that it does. Our distributors are also

working to help you achieve legislative

compliance with minimum disruption

and cost.

Extended The dependability and reliability of our

engines enable us to offer a choice of

Extended Service Contracts, so customers

can accurately predict the cost of

ownership of their machines.

Quicker Perkins’ information systems make it

quicker and easier for our distributors to

diagnose engine faults and identify

replacement parts. Our parts logistics

operation can dispatch more than 45,000

different parts from stock, often reaching

customers within 24 hours.

SaferOnly Perkins’ genuine parts can maintain

an engine in its just-off-the-production-line

state, and ensure safe and

efficient operation in line with

the original specification.

Quality Of the 18 million and more Perkins

engines shipped since the 1930s, more

than half are still in operation. That says a

great deal about the quality of their design,

engineering and manufacture.

The technology in our latest models is

already proven and robust. Working with

our partners, we will have completed

nearly one million hours of testing in real,

working machines by the end of 2010.
