PERMACULTUREfighting for sustainable living
During 15 days, three associations dedicated to youth and the development of environmental politics (UK Permaculture, Geai and Permacultura Cantabria) will provide a meeting of 30 young people, in Cantabria, Spain.
The main goal of this project is to train future rural entrepreneurs.
There exists the need to go back to the countryside, to the popular and traditional wisdom and healthier ways of life.
Everyday more and more young people try to make a living going back to the countryside.
This project aims to bring tools, training, encouragement and examples to the participants in order to learn to be able to have business initiatives in rural areas.

Training and learning workshops on traditional trade activities in areas where are opportunities of employment and work (permaculture, biobuilding, organic farming, management of natural products, ecological stoves, etc).
The methodology will be non-formal education, with a detailed and varied programme of activities in order to obtain a complete view from different perspectives so as to promote the entrepreneurial spirit. During workshops, classes, debates, etc the young people will have an active and dynamic role.
The aim of this Project is to promote a higher social participation by young people; the self-employment and the coming back to the countryside in a logic, viable and committed way.
This activity will take place from the Friday 29st may to Friday 12st of June in the ecological farm La Garma in Llanos, Cantabria, Spain. This place was chosen because it is a good example of how a group of young people can undertake rural projects.
The creation of this kind of programmers promotes a long-term view and offers the necessary tools in order for young people to become the change and the social movement we need in our societies.
Specialized classes for developing the skills of the entrepreneur (listening and leadership skills).
Visit successful local examples on rural entrepreneurship.
Each participant will have to present his or her own project at the end of the training.

VENUE, FACILITIES AND CONDITIONS
The project will be carried out in the ecological farm La Garma. This farm is located in the Cantabrian Mountains. There is a project of communal living with several people; there are several bio-constructed buildings; organic orchards and vegetable gardens; farm; and a social fabric where many different social projects come together. Some of the actual projects are:
Neighbour teams for community work.
Creativity and development group for adults.
Play and free education area for children.
Consumers cooperative/group: fruits and vegetables, bread, natural cosmetics, soaps
Emotional management groups.
Exchange and alternative economies network.
Native seeds network.
Meditation, yoga, tai chi and dance groups.
Support groups for teenagers and parents.
We have a photovoltaic panel system; biomass heaters and stoves; hydraulic ram; different solar cooker models; hydrogen car prototypes; natural swimming-pool; bio-accommodation; native forest; a yearly flow river; good orientation; four different straw-bale houses using wood, stone, mud and green or living roofs; composting toilets; organic garden for around 30 families; chickens, horses, sheep, goats, pigs, rabbits, beesetc.
The social and physical environment is completely favourable for this training and experience-based project.
Although things might seem ideal and perfect, we do not want people to have a false idea.
Training takes place in a farm prepared for vegetable production and the facilities are quite humble. Normally, we are not used to share room with other people, use latrines, work in teams, etc., etc. All these conditions, in addition to the rural environment might be a shock for the participants.
On the other hand, this situation is suitable to enjoy sharing the current recourses and experiencing a communal living. Difficulties arise every time we live with other people. We are aware of that, and the programme is designed in order to make it visible and to learn how to work on those difficulties.

THE FUNCTIONING OF THE FARM
Sleeping:
We have 2 main buildings with space for 20 people. Both are open spaces, so the room will be shared.
In the beginning of the activity the group will decide how they will be shared.
Showers and toilet:
We have a room with showers. We have hot water from solar energy, but we can use a heater in order to support the supply during cloudy days.
Training room dining room:
We have a 100 m. multifunctional space for the classes and meals. Group will be in charge of keeping the place clean and tidy.
Tasks:
In order to run smoothly during these days together, the group will divide into small task-groups.
These groups will be in charge of keeping the facilities clean and tidy; serve meals; helping cleaning the kitchen; watch out that the latrines have toilet paper and sawdust; and other small tasks necessary for a good cohabitation.
