FROM THE PAROCHIAL VICAR, FR. PEDRO MERCADO JR.
St. Joseph—The Patron of Fathers
Happy Father’s Day to all of our fathers and we thank them for the wonderful joys and experiences we have had with them. As fathers know, being a father is not a simple task. It requires much patience, time, love and mercy. There is NO PERFECT instruction book on how to be a father nor was there ever a perfect father (aside from our God). However, we Christian Catholics are blessed to have Saint Joseph (Our Lord Jesus’ putative father and the husband of Our Lady, Mother Mary) as the patron saint of fathers. Fathers are called to mirror Jesus Christ unto other people, as all Christians are; however, looking up to Saint Joseph might help a man to understand how to be a good father. The Bible calls St. Joseph a righteous man (Mt. 1:19). That means that as a carpenter he must have worked hard to support his family, never resorting to deceit or to inferior workmanship. St. Joseph certainly was a good example to Jesus of making sacrifices for the sake of those we love. Like many fathers, Saint Joseph experienced firsthand the
anxiety of fatherhood. When Joseph and Mary lost Jesus in the huge city of Jerusalem, Joseph felt the pain of this event as much as did Mary. “When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, ‘Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety’” (Luke 2:48). Our Lord Jesus placed a huge scare on Saint Joseph but this did not prevent Joseph from living a good and holy life. I suggest that all fathers look up to their patron saint, Saint Joseph, and follow his example. An example of a father who never shames his wife with any of his actions, of a father who obeys the will of God, of a father who is willing to serve at all times. Fathers, yes, it is not easy being a father, but we can always count on God’s grace and on the intercession of Saint Joseph. Saint Joseph has two feast days: March 19 and May 1(The Feast of St. Joseph the Worker). Let us all make today a very special day for our fathers and pray for them everyday so that they can come closer to our Lord. Let us also remember our fathers who have completed their earthly life and pray for their eternal rest. I leave you with the following words from actor Mark Wahlberg: “I pray to be a good servant to God, a father, a husband, a son, a friend, a brother, an uncle, a good neighbor, a good leader to those who look up to me, a good follower to those who are serving God and doing the right thing” (https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/mark_wahlberg_471100?src=t_father's_day). Happy Father’s Day and God bless you all! Saint Joseph, Pray for us!

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of
our community and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical
suffering may they find consolation in your healing presence. Show your
mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses, make broken bodies whole and
free downcast spirits. May these special people find lasting health and
deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We ask this
through Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen
