St. Pope John Paul II - A Labor Day Meditation As we approach Labor Day, it is good to know that several Popes have spoken about the rights and obligations of workers and those who employ them. Perhaps the most famous papal letter on these matters was Rerum Novarum (“On New Things”), written by Pope Leo XIII in 1891. On the 90th anniversary of Rerum Novarum, Pope John Paul II wrote “Laborem Exercens,” in which he discussed the spiritual dimension of human labor. Here are some highlights. [The bracketed numbers in red indicate the section numbers.] In the very first pages of the Bible, God tells the first human
beings to fill the earth and subdue it, and in order to do so, He gives them dominion over the animals and plants of the earth (Genesis 28-30). This command to work was not a punishment for sin, because it was given before the first sin was committed. In fact, the work that was given to mankind was a kind of participation in the creative and active work of God! As beings created in the image and likeness of God, He invites us to join Him in working for the benefit of ourselves and others. [4] In many cultures, work was considered to be the duty of the “lower classes” of peoples, while the “upper classes” enjoyed lives with little or no work. But this erroneous idea was completely contradicted when God-the-Son became one of us and worked as a carpenter. He showed us the great dignity of the worker, even when the products of his work are not appreciated. [7] Work is not only to be seen in the physical products of our labor, but also very much in the fulfillment of man, who uses his skills and efforts to benefit himself, his family and others. [9] It is through Christ and His Church that work by human beings may be given the most profound meaning intended by God. [24] Jesus told us, “My Father is at work until now, so I am at work” (John 5:17). This means that God continually works to sustain creation in its existence, and He works in the hearts of those who allow Him to do so. The work of God has as its object the “rest” for all His children in a preliminary way during our lives on earth, and one day in a perfect way in heaven. It is to that end that our work and our rest should also be directed. This means that even our most ordinary everyday activities can have great dignity. [25] St. Paul spoke at length of the importance of work, even going so far as to say, “. . . If one is unwilling to work, neither should he eat” (2 Thes. 3:10). As the Second Vatican Council stated, the most important benefit of work is not so much a physical product, as it is the spiritual growth of the worker in how he intends his efforts to the true good of himself and others. [26] But the most profound meaning of labor is seen in the saving work of Jesus Himself. As He labored and endured much suffering in His work to redeem us, so we, as members of the Mystical Body of Christ, can unite our work to His for the good of the entire Church. In other words, every work we do out of true (though imperfect) love for others can be united to the perfect redemptive work of Jesus, for the salvation of souls. Yet our work would be missing something essential if we did not keep in mind the Resurrection of Jesus as a sign of the triumph of His labors and the work of those who are joined to Him. Even as we endure difficult work, let us remember that we are joined to Jesus Who has already won the victory, and so we who are joined to Him in our labors in a sense already share in that victory with Him! [27]

San Papa Juan Pablo II - Una Meditación del Día del Trabajo A medida que nos acercamos al Día del Trabajo, es bueno saber que varios Papas han hablado sobre los derechos y obligaciones de los trabajadores y de quienes los emplean. Quizás la carta papal más famosa sobre estos asuntos fue Rerum Novarum ("Sobre cosas nuevas"), escrita por el Papa León XIII en 1891. En el 90 aniversario de Rerum Novarum, el Papa Juan Pablo II escribió "Laborem Exercens", en el que discutió La dimensión espiritual del trabajo humano. Aquí hay algunos puntos destacados. [Los números entre corchetes en rojo indican los números de sección.] En las primeras páginas de la Biblia, Dios les dice a los primeros seres humanos que llenen la tierra y la sometan, y para hacerlo, les da dominio sobre los animales y las plantas de la tierra (Génesis 28-30). Esta orden de trabajar no fue un castigo por el pecado, porque se dio antes de que se cometiera el primer pecado. De hecho, el trabajo que se le dio a la humanidad fue una especie de participación en el trabajo creativo y activo de Dios. Como seres creados a imagen y semejanza de Dios, Él nos invita a unirnos a Él para trabajar en beneficio de nosotros mismos y de los demás. [4]
En muchas culturas, el trabajo se consideraba el deber de las "clases bajas" de los pueblos, mientras que las "clases altas" disfrutaban de vidas con poco o ningún trabajo. Pero esta idea errónea fue completamente contradicha cuando Dios el Hijo se convirtió en uno de nosotros y trabajó como carpintero. Nos mostró la gran dignidad del trabajador, incluso cuando los productos de su trabajo no son apreciados. [7]
El trabajo no solo se ve en los productos físicos de nuestro trabajo, sino también en la realización del hombre, que utiliza sus habilidades y esfuerzos para beneficiarse a sí mismo, a su familia y a los demás. [9]
Es a través de Cristo y su Iglesia que el trabajo de los seres humanos puede recibir el significado más profundo que Dios pretendía. [24] Jesús nos dijo: "Mi Padre está en el trabajo hasta ahora, así que yo estoy en el trabajo" (Juan 5:17). Esto significa que Dios trabaja continuamente para mantener la creación en su existencia, y trabaja en los corazones de aquellos que le permiten hacerlo. La obra de Dios tiene como objeto el "descanso" para todos sus hijos de manera preliminar durante nuestras vidas en la tierra, y un día de manera perfecta en el cielo. Es con ese fin que nuestro trabajo y nuestro descanso también deben ser dirigidos. Esto significa que incluso nuestras actividades cotidianas más comunes pueden tener una gran dignidad. [25]
San Pablo habló extensamente de la importancia del trabajo, llegando incluso a decir: ". . . Si uno no está dispuesto a trabajar, tampoco debe comer” (2 Tes. 3:10). Como declaró el Concilio Vaticano II, el beneficio más importante del trabajo no es tanto un producto físico, sino el crecimiento espiritual del trabajador en la forma en que intenta sus esfuerzos para el verdadero bien de sí mismo y de los demás. [26]
Pero el significado más profundo del trabajo se ve en la obra salvadora de Jesús mismo. Mientras trabajaba y soportaba mucho sufrimiento en su trabajo para redimirnos, así, nosotros, como miembros del Cuerpo Místico de Cristo, podemos unir nuestro trabajo al suyo por el bien de toda la Iglesia. En otras palabras, cada trabajo que hacemos por amor verdadero (aunque imperfecto) a los demás puede unirse a la obra redentora perfecta de Jesús, para la salvación de las almas.
Sin embargo, a nuestro trabajo le faltaría algo esencial si no tuviéramos en cuenta la Resurrección de Jesús como un signo del triunfo de Sus trabajos y el trabajo de aquellos que están unidos a Él. Incluso mientras soportamos el trabajo difícil, recordemos que estamos unidos a Jesús, quien ya ganó la victoria, ¡y nosotros, los que estamos unidos a Él en nuestras labores, en cierto sentido, ya compartimos esa victoria con Él! [27]

Las Comunidades de Evangelización tendrán su próximo retiro del 6 al 9 de septiembre. Este retiro será impartido por 3 Sacerdotes, el P. Héctor Jiménez, el P. Elías Sánchez y el P. Jacinto Olguín. El retiro no tiene costo alguno, el viernes 6 de septiembre a las 7pm se completará el proceso de registro y se dará una breve introducción. El Sábado 7 y el domingo 8 de Septiembre de 8am a 7pm, será de entrada por salida empezando a las 8:00am y terminando a las 7:00pm, ambos días tendremos el desayuno y comida, sin costo para los participantes.
