Tai Chi Chih (CHE224)Tai Chi Chih is a form of Chi Kung consisting of 19 movements and one pose. The practice is based on traditional Chinese medicine techniques focused on circulating and balancing internal energy (chi), and was developed by Justin Stone, a Tai Chi Chuan master, as a simple yet effective method for Westerners to learn and participate in the practice without benefit of years of study with a master. Individuals practice Tai Chi Chih throughout the United States and many other countries of the world and are taught the standardized form by accredited teachers who renew their training on a regular basis. This simple technique is easy and enjoyable to learn for people of all ages, including those who must perform it while seated. The beautiful flowing movements are relaxing, and are reported to reduce stress; regulate blood pressure; increase focus and concentration; improve balance, strength and circulation; improve immunity; and increase energy levels. 9/10-12/3, Tuesdays (12 – 1.25 hour sessions)No class 11/265:30–6:45 PMInstructor: Suanne LewisACM: CC-Green RoomCourse Cost: $95.00Maryland Senior Course Cost: $95.00

ENOUGH! Learning to Love Your Imperfect Self (C/S530)I see and hear so many of you struggling with feeling inadequate, unloved, not good enough, and expect that things won’t get better. Maybe you grew up being criticized or bullied at home or school, maybe you were in a romantic relationship where you were disrespected, cheated on, or ignored. When you feel that way about yourself, it has a rippling effect: you settle for mediocre relationships and jobs and you don’t have the confidence to go for your goals. Sometimes, a person will develop unhealthy habits to cope with these feelings like self-harm and using substances. We are all uniquely beautiful and interesting and the Universe needs us to love ourselves! When we love ourselves, flaws and all, we raise our expectations of others, say “no more!” to abuse, have confidence, take chances, and no longer beat ourselves up. This course takes a look at how these feelings began, how it has impacted your life, and most importantly, 25+ strategies to learn to love yourself.C.J. has been a Therapist, Behavior Specialist, and Life Coach for over two decades and brings her unique style of instruction to ACM. 9/17, Tuesday (1 session)5:30-8:00 PMACM: CE BuildingInstructor: C.J. COURAGE! Face Your Fears and Do the Scary Stuff (C/S531)Do you put off making decisions? Are you afraid to be in new situations with new people? Have you tried to make yourself small so you don’t draw attention to yourself? Do you worry what others think? This course is for you if you said yes to any of those questions. In this course, we take a look at both courage and fear, reasons that have led you to be fearful, the most common fears, why it is important to deal with our fears, and 30+ strategies for living a more courageous life. Remember, if you want things to change, you’ll have to make some changes. Stop that chatter in your head saying you can’t or shouldn’t or worrying about the what ifs. Life is more interesting on the other side of fear. Let me tell you something- the longer you live with fear, it becomes your normal, and it will be even harder to bust out of that way of thinking. Then when you have to do something that’s uncomfortable, you become paralyzed. Courageous people have fears just like you but they refuse to allow them to stop them; they do the scary stuff anyway. 10/16, Wednesday (1 session)5:30-8:00 PMACM: CE BuildingInstructor: C.J. Classical Drawing for the Advanced (C/S510)“Why do we draw?” Because drawing is powerful and is the most basic passageway through which we can access the power of art to express our ideas, feelings, beliefs and truths. For visual artists, an understanding of the elements of pattern, proportions, line, form and volume offers the keys to unlock the doors to successful expression. Whatever mediums an artist chooses, learning to draw will give your work a strong foundation.

Donna Housel is the instructor. She is a member of the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators and the Colored Pencil Society of America. Donna founded the Greater Cumberland district chapter of the Colored Pencil Society of America. Donna is a well-known artist and is a frequent instructor of drawing and colored pencil throughout the region.

Scratch Art (C/S491)Scratch art is a unique art form using scratchboard. I tell students that it is the same as drawing, only backwards. Scratchboard is a wooden panel coated with a layer of white clay, the same clay that is used to make china, then sprayed with a layer of black India ink. It was developed for the professional scratch artist. The original design is lightly scratched into the black ink surface using very delicate tools; concentrating on lights and darks until the desired effect is achieved. Each image is literally thousands of scratches allowing for precise detail and control of lines, enabling the artist to bring the piece to life. Because of it’ durability newspapers illustrators used this type of art for advertising since it could be used more than once for ads. A material fee of $10 will be collected the first night of class.

Although tole is the French term referring to painting on tin surfaces, the students may paint on a variety of surfaces using oil, watercolor, acrylics or other mediums. Students should bring their own supplies for this course.

Paper Painting (C/S392)Traditionally known as collage, this exciting new art form of paper painting allows the artist to create mixed media art works by combining traditional collage and painting techniques. Students will create unique paper paintings using painted and found papers. Demonstrations by artist, Linda Stewart, are designed to teach students how to create their own distinctive paste papers through techniques of stamping, staining, monoprinting on a gel plate, painting, and more. Lessons on design and composition will prepare students to transform an inspiration image into collage art. This will be followed by time for work on individual paper paintings with guidance and encouragement from the teacher. Basic art supplies (paint, papers, scissors, glue, etc.) will be needed. You will need about 4 ounces of worsted weight wool or acrylic yarn, and size 7 needles (either a set of double point needles or two circular needles or one 40 inch long circular needle), or whatever size will give you a gauge of 5 stitches to the inch with your yarn. Don’t know what that is? We’ll talk about it during the first session. The sock knitting techniques we will talk about can also be used in many different types of knitting projects. English Country Dance, Introduction (C/S496)Does the word “dancing” evoke nightmarish memories of being dragged onto the dance floor at Cousin Millie’s wedding, where you spent the next 5 minutes having no idea what to do with your arms and legs? But you do love music, and moving to music, so English Country Dancing could be the perfect compromise. This type of dancing – which immigrated to America along with the first British colonists – is fun and easy to learn. Similar to square dancing, you’ll learn some simple figures, which are strung together in a variety of sequences to make up different dances. The best part – your instructor will be “calling” each dance (telling you what to do every step of the way). George Washington did it… Jane Austen did it… If you can walk and count to 4, you can learn English Country Dancing, too! Still not sure? Try the first class for free – if you would like to continue (we know you will!), you can register for the full course afterwards.
