Personal Music players - Now and Then
What is a personal music player (PMP)?
• A personal music player is a device that you can carry around with you and lets you listen to music
• Usually, the device has headphones for the user to place on his/her ears to listen to music
• The goal of a personal music player is to have the ability to listen to music “on the go”
The first real personal music player
• The Sony Walkman TPS-L2 was the first popular PMP
• It was released in 1979• The user could listen to
cassettes while on the go• Usually, a cassette fit 1
album (15-17 songs)• The walkman used

PMPs advance with technology
• As time went on, PMPs got a bit more compact (smaller) and added options like radio and recording from the radio
• Eventually, PMPs used CDs and Mini discs (1990s-early 2000s)
• In 2001, Apple introduced the first generation of Ipods…

• They are more compact• Use digital files• Have built in rechargeable
batteries that last a long time

• The Ipod touch is a PMP• It is also….• A camera• A device that can use
the internet• A video game player• A video player• So much more

• It is smaller• It can do way more than
just listen to music• The battery is
rechargeable• Not to mention, you have
access to a larger amount of songs
