Welcome to the Guernsey Velo Club handbook. If you are a new member some suggestions that you may find helpful appear below. If you are a new or an established member you should read this handbook and understand the rules that apply to you as a member of this Club. Over the years the Club Committee has endeavoured to keep the number of rules to the minimum, but it is the nature of sport and cycling is no exception, that there have to be certain rules so that we all know where the goaIposts are. Please do your best to understand the rules laid down and abide by them - it is in the interest of all concerned in our sport in this island.

Suggestions for newcomers to the sport.

Not everyone taking up cycle racing sticks to it therefore and we would not advise the newcomer to spend what can be several hundred pounds or more on equipment before he/she has a chance to really find out if this is the sport for them.

For road events, a basic sports cycle is all that is needed in the first few months, and can be obtained at a reasonable cost. In Mountain Bike racing it is far cheaper to start on a standard Mountain Bike.

Nine speed gears are quite adequate, although 18, 20, 30 and 33 speed machines are frequently used and are not barred. Full racing tyres are not essential for road events, with a large range of well priced high pressure tyres and rims available. (Most good cycle manufacturers fit these as standard to their sports models).

Riders under the age of 18 years must get their parents consent to join and race and are restricted in the size of gears they can use in club events on the road. This is not to prevent them from beating more senior riders, but to help them develop the essential art of fast pedalling. It also helps to prevent knee injuries in developing adolescents. This is a major factor in their ability to race competitively as they reach adulthood.

All riders under the age of 18 years need to have their gears restricted for Road events (ask your cycle dealer to assist) to prevent breaking this rule, with a check being made from time to time by club officials.

We set the standard - the others follow. All Velo Club members should be proud of their Club and the pastime we all enjoy. It is for us to set the standard of behaviour for all other cyclists and, ultimately, all other road users. Set the example; ride safely and with care and consideration for all users of our roads and tracks, only riding where it is legal and in a manner which will bring credit on the Club and other cyclists

Please note:

1. All time trials races are open to both racing and mountain bikes. Road racing (for 16 year olds and over) and circuit racing requires a road racing bike unless the event regulations specifically allow other machines.

2. Clothing - wear what you like and only spend money on special clothing when you are sure about the sport.

3. Always be at the event headquarters no less than 25 minutes before the race starts. Ask for the signing on board as all competitors must sign a declaration of indemnity. Entries close 20 minutes before the race is scheduled to start and late entries are not encouraged accepted. Most Time Trials can be entered online prior to the event – please use the system in place.

4

Page 5: Personal Race Record - Guernsey Velo Club : Home · Web viewWelcome to the Guernsey Velo Club handbook. If you are a new member some suggestions that you may find helpful appear below.

4. Pin your race number on your lower back and make sure that it is pinned to your shirt and shorts to prevent it rucking up. Do not fold it. The top of the number should be at your waist. When finishing a time trial try to call out your number as you finish which will help the timekeepers.

5. If you are in any doubt about any forthcoming event, try the Velo Club website – www.gvc.gg

Racing Safely

The GVC has been organising cycle races in Guernsey for over 40 years and it seems appropriate that from time to time to have a meeting with all racing members and marshals to ensure that there is no misunderstanding as to how riders are expected to conduct themselves when taking part in a cycle race on the roads of Guernsey. It is also important that the role of the marshal is clear to all so that riders know what to expect from a marshal at a junction or, at the turn in the case of a time trial.

The club committee regularly conducts a review of rider safety and wishes to pass the results of the review on to the club members. We will ensure that all riders and marshals have a copy of a ‘code of conduct’ or guidelines to help clarify matters and we will ensure that no riders starts the season without this information. The objective of these reviews is to ensure that going forward the club is seen to promote safe cycle racing in Guernsey and that all club members are aware of how they contribute to the continuation of safe cycle racing.

In the future the club will also ensure that all new members are given appropriate guidance prior to racing on the roads.

When racing on the open road a rider should bear in mind the following simple but very important points at all times:

Do not ride in a manner that may cause injury to you. Do not ride in a manner that may cause injury or damage to a member of the public or other road

users. Do not ride in a manner that may be bring the club into disrepute and that in turn could lead to the

banning of cycle racing by the local authorities.

These three points may seem fairly obvious and we are sure that we all consider nothing less when sat on the start line of a race, but sometimes they seem to get pushed a bit to the back or our mind during the heat of a race. A cyclist is very vulnerable with a crash helmet offering little protection in reality. During the history of our club two members have been left with serious long term disabilities (and that is putting it mildly) following accidents involving cars, we do not want to have any more.

Other points to consider:

Do not cut corners, this refers to right hand corners and where there is a white line marking the centre of the road, apart from the safety point of view, this will be deemed to be shortening the course in a time trial and will be looked on as cheating.

Overtaking other vehicles safely, this is a difficult topic to cover accurately with words but this is very much down to how a rider perceives a particular situation. Avoid overtaking manoeuvres near to junctions, turns or corners. It is better to arrive at the finish a few seconds slower than arrive at hospital in an ambulance, there is always another race; you only have one life.

Approach all junctions with a view that you may need to stop or slow down, the marshal will do his best to get you through the junction without the need for the rider to slow, but do not assume you have right of way.

14

Page 15: Personal Race Record - Guernsey Velo Club : Home · Web viewWelcome to the Guernsey Velo Club handbook. If you are a new member some suggestions that you may find helpful appear below.

Other more general issues to consider:

Do not take advantage of an unusual situation in a road race to gain an advantage (i.e. a herd of cows, or horse rider(s). This is unsporting.

Never ride with your head down. When riding in a bunch always keep an eye on the wheel in front of you, the biggest cause of

crashes in a bunch is due to wheels touching. Never use abusive language to other road users, apart from the fact that abusive language is never

needed, you may be shouting at a sponsor, a politician, off duty police officer etc.

The Role of the Marshal

Although our race marshals do not have the power to stop traffic at a junction (only police and special constables can) historically they have done so and if a junction is marshalled by informed marshals then both riders and members of the public should avoid any incident.

Following discussions with the police they are happy with what we are looking to do and support the way we marshal, even to the point of stopping the traffic. However they are looking to get approval from the Police Chief to give training to marshals for club’s like ours in the future on the basis that there are not sufficient special constables to cover the demand at present.

The basic rules of marshalling effectively are:

Always wear a marshalling jacket and carry a red flag Stand in the road at the junction in clear sight of the riders and other traffic. Give clear hand signals to traffic if you need to stop them, eye contact with the driver works. Assuming the traffic stops wave the rider through so that there a clear understanding the junction is

clear. After the rider has passed through the junction turn to the driver and thank him/her for stopping. If anybody questions your authority refer them to the president. If a driver looks like not stopping give a clear signal to the rider to stop. A clear hand signal will be the arm fully extended at shoulder height in the direction of the car or

rider with the palm of the hand facing the car or rider.

If riders are seen by marshals or club officials not to be following the above guidelines then action will be taken to discipline the rider concerned. We need to understand that we are given permission to race on the roads but still need to ride in a sensible and safe manner; it is not our race track. We need to ensure that the actions of us as individuals will not be the cause of the loss of racing in Guernsey if we get it wrong.

If an event (this includes sportives) comes upon livestock either crossing the road or in the road, ALL THE RIDERS MUST STOP UNTIL THE ROAD IS CLEAR. Under no circumstances should any rider attempt to ride through the herd. If a group of riders comes across a horse the event shall immediately be neutralized, the group should slow down and give a clear warning to the horse rider that they are passing, and pass only when safe to do so, giving the horse and rider plenty of room.

Special Notice to all Competitors.

The attention of all riders is drawn to the fact that we race on the public roads in a privileged position, and that it is important that this privilege is not abused.

Despite the fact that we are racing, we have no special privileges or rights, and it is of the utmost importance that the rules of the road are observed at all times.

It is important that we keep to the left, make adequate signals, and take all the necessary precautions when changing direction. In particular, when turning in the road in a time trial, it is important that you check the following traffic, and give adequate warning of your intention before turning.

It must be further noted that the marshals in a race have NO LEGAL RIGHT TO STOP TRAFFIC and are only positioned to indicate the direction that you should take, although they may warn you of traffic in the vicinity. THE ONUS TO SEE THAT IT IS SAFE TO PROCEED ALWAYS RESTS WITH THE RIDER. In no circumstances should any rider accept that a marshal has any right to impede the normal flow of traffic.

Rider Development Support.

The club is able to provide financial support, either from its own funds or by way of the Guernsey Sports Commission, to members who take part in any activity, which may be construed as helping him or her become a better rider/coach/official etc. It can help with travel or accommodation costs or course fees.

Each application is dealt with in confidence by the Committee following the submission of an appropriate form depending on the support being sought.

Applications should be completed in full and submitted to the Cycling Development Officer no later than 4 weeks prior to the date of the event for which support is sought. The Committee will have the discretion to make exemptions. Please note that riders who are assisted in this manner are expected to contribute an article for the club website on the event that they attended.
