    BE OF GOODCOURAGE

    FROM THE EDITOR

Dr. Gordon McDonald Executive Editor, Personal UPDATE

ITS A NEW YEAR. And even though the world seems to be trapped in a down-hill slide

with ever-increasing velocity, the New Year brings with it a certain amount of built-inoptimism. If you have been following world events, you might suspect that there is a bitof denial inltrating our perspective.

Our circumstances are never supposed to affect our hope. Tat is left to a world without God.Te Christian worldview has always been counter intuitive. When things are at their worst,God is at His best. Although our attentions are distracted by the struggle to save the Americandream and to understand how the world is changing, Gods interests have always been directedtoward the individual, not the collective.

o maintain a proper Godly worldview, we must never lose sight of that most valuable data-point. Kingdoms rise and fall. Political parties ebb and ow. But our God remains the same, forever.

Tere are many foreseeable challenges before us in the coming months. Our responsibility toght the ght remains, but the outcome is of Gods choosing. Our involvement is required, butour joy comes from God. In fact, that joy surpasses worldly understanding.

One of our many mottos here is Its never been more im-portant to know what is going on in the world. It remainstrue day after day and year after year.

We live in incredibly exciting times. Tings are happening

that are quickly leading to the soon-return of our Hope, theLord Jesus Christ.

    Be of good courage. Maranatha!

IT IS BY COMPARING THE CLASSIC KING JAMES VERSION WITH THE NEWINTERNATIONAL STANDARD VERSION (ISV) THAT WE GAIN A MORE COM-PLETE SENSE OF THE MAJESTIC FLOW OF THOUGHT OF THIS UNIQUEROYAL PROPHET.

    THE ROYAL PR

    NEW COMMENTARY

There is a specific prophet that dominatesthe entire Bible: Te Prophet Isaiah. As the Royal

Prophet, he served under four kings,1

with a span of future perspective that dwarfs all therest. His vocabulary is the most extensive2 and the integrity of his messages constitute apillar of apologetic reasoning.

    A Target of Controversy

Isaiahs message was so controversial that the Ashkenazi Jews tookChapter 53 out of their Bible (theTenakh ). (However, theSephardic Jews retained it; and when theDead Sea Scrolls were ultimately dis-

covered, there was a complete copy of Isaiahwith Chapter 53 right where it belonged: in the precise center of the second section.)

King Manasseh apparently had Isaiah cut in half. Te moderncritics have attempted a similar thing with their Deutero-Isaiah theo-ries; however, only to the uninformed. (A careful study of John 12:38-40 shatters their profane speculations.)

    Elegant Style

Te ow of thoughtunequalled elsewherealso led toHandels classicchoral masterpiece . We are also now blessed with a proprietarytranslation of thePaleo-Hebrew from the Dead Sea Scrolls by the ac-knowledged expert, Dr. Peter Flint, which is also the cornerstone of thenew International Standard Version Bible (ISV) . We paralleled ourexpositional commentary with the marvelous ow and rhythms of theISV, which very much speak for themselves.

    Messianic Insights

Among many things, Isaiah is also the mostMessianic of all the Old estament prophets. On every page, we gain a Messian-ic insight: everyChristmas we celebrate the Hebraic parallelism:for unto us a child is born; unto us a Son is given.3 (Tese arenot synonymous: Te child was human and his birth fullled in Bethlehem . Te Son was divine, and given at Golgotha .)

For many, the Holy of Holies of the entire Old estament is Isaiah Chapter 53. Located in the geometric center of thesecond section of Isaiah, the pivotal implications of this passageimpacts the entire universe. Far more than simply our personalsalvation is in view here; so much so that this passage has been set

apart in a special study calledTe Fulcrum of the Entire Universe. (See page 42 to order.)

It is also Isaiah that explains the mystery of why Jesus was ostensibly not easily recognized after His resurrection.4 (Johns enigmatic remark in John 21:12 is particularly puz-zling!) And Isaiah also provides us with such a clear view of the Millennial Kingdom thatmust certainly embarrass the amillennialists. Tere are passages that clearly commingle withe nal chapters of the Book of Revelation.5

    Cosmological Insights

It is Isaiahs glimpse that the Creation wasnotoriginally without form and void (asimplied in Genesis 1:2s tohu vbohu ):

For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earmade it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabitedthe LORD; and there is none else. 6

Tus, this hints of a possible interval between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2 and, perhaps, aninsight on the fall of Satan, which Isaiah details inChapter 14 .7

Isaiah also confronts the very cutting edge ofcosmology as he refers to the stretchingof the heavens,8 which challenges the very fabric of space itself. (Tis, along with the pro-found implications of the Zero Point Energy , will be the subject of subsequent articleson the very foundations ofsubatomic physics .)

    Other Eschatological Insights

It is by comparing the classicKing James Version with the newInternational Standard Version(ISV) that we gain a more complete senseof the majestic ow of thought of this unique Royal Prophet. It is in

Isaiahs description of the ultimate destruction ofBabylon which altersour perspective of what has yet to happen in theMiddle East and worldaffairs.9 It is in Isaiahs allusion to the future role of theSinim (China )10

which further seems to suggest a major global outreach to theGentiles aspart of the nal climax.

    A Personal Letter

Te Book of Isaiah alsoincludes a personal letter fromGod to Cyrus the Great (writ-ten over a centurybefore he wasborn), calling him by name andproviding so many anticipateddetails of his career that itmoved him to free the Jewish

captives to return to their land.

Tat saith of Cyrus, He is my shepherd, and shall perform all my pleasure:even saying to Jerusalem, Tou shalt be built; and to the temple, Ty foun-dation shall be laid.11

    For the Connoisseur

Unquestionably, Isaiah has given us our most indispensable Old

estament prophetic tour de force and it is replete withexegetical dis-coveries andhermeneutic treasures. (It was Isaiah that revealed that thePharaoh of the Exodus wasnot an Egyptian .12 )

Te Holy Spirit always rewards the diligent. When you want tofeed on the Word of God, prepare yourself for a gourmet meal. It will beuniquely rewarding (and life-changing!).

Tis study is now available on DVD. Seepage 9 for more information.

While governments plan (sometimes poorly) for disasters, individ-uals have the ultimate responsibility for their own welfare and that oftheir family. Te rst thing that needs to be determined is How muchof a risk is there from a disaster?Risk , however, is more than just what

the odds are that an event will occur. Forrisk analysts , risk is reducedto a quasi-equation:

    Risk = Treat x Vulnerability x Impact

Risk is a combination of all three factors. For there to be any riskthere must be at least some threat and vulnerability and impact. If anyof these three factors is zero, then there is no risk. Of course, every-

thing has an element of threat, vulnerability or impact, so everythingcarries some sort of risk. Tose that demand that an initiativebe it anuclear power plant, a new drug, or a social programcarry absolutelyno risk believe in a fantasy.

    Risk Assessment for an EMP

ake the dangers from anElectromagnetic Pulse (EMP) . AnEMP is a high-intensity burst of electromagnetic energy caused by the

rapid acceleration of charged particles.Nuclear weapons , some new non-nuclear weapons, and even

geomagnetic storms (often called space weather) can power an EMP,and the resultant changing magnetic eld in the Earths atmosphere candisrupt electrical systems.

Many writers immediately call this an Armageddon event, where a single EMP can throw a large portion ofa country back into the18th century . Te Risk Equationyields a slightly different answer.

Te Treat from an EMP is certainly out there. Anuclear missile detonated 120 miles up in the air wouldsend out an EMP that would extend out 1,000 miles fromthe center of detonation. Tere are several countries thatare capable of doing it.Russia and China denitely havethe weapons and delivery systems that can launch such anattack. Other countries, such asNorth Korea and Iran

claim to have the capability, but it is doubtful they have both the weaponry and delivery sys-tems to deliver such an attack. So, in this case, the Treat is deemed to be moderate to high.

Te Vulnerability to such an attack is variable. Te threat of an ICBM (intercontinentalballistic missile) attack fromChina or Russia is deemed lowboth would fear a retaliatorystrike. North Korea says it has the capability, but an analysis of the nuclear tests it has con-

ducted is suspect.Iran , while not believed to have thiscapability now, could have it in the future, and givenits worldview,1 this is one of the reasons their nuclearambition is drawing close scrutiny. Te most likelyscenario for a country such as Iran is for it to launch adevice from acontainer ship located off the coast ofthe United States. In response to this scenario, Aegismissile cruisers are on alert in their home ports lo-cated along the United States coastlines. Tis is not a

sure defense and open to criticism from military analysts. Many would deem U.S. vulnerabilityto attack to be low to moderate.

Te Impact from such an event has varied over time. Strategic military assets wouldsuffer a low impact from such an event. Tey have been hardened against such an attackfor years. actical military assets used to be hardened very well, but recent budget cuts havereduced their resistance to an EMP. Strategic civilian assets, such as the nationalpower grid ,

would suffer signicant damage from an EMP, but government and industry are taking steps

Many writers callthis an Armageddonevent, where a single

EMP can throw alarge portion of acountry back into the18th century...

to mitigate any adverse effects.Consumer electronics would suffer the worst effects froman EMP and very little has been done to protect these devices. Te impact of an EMP wouldthus be rated at moderate to high.

All three components of risk make for a risk that is deemed moderate. For an EMP gen

erated from a nuclear device, what is deemed to be the most likely scenario is a missile launfrom a container ship where the missiles trajectory would be low and at, so to best avoidantimissile defenses . In this scenario, adetonation

would occur much lower than 100 miles in altitude. Any resulting damage would affect a regionrather thanan entire country.

    Preparing for a Regional Disaster

A regional disaster is still something to worry about. Te damage resulting fromHurri-cane Katrina that hit the United States in August 2005 is a good example of a regional disaster

While news reports left the impression thatNew Orleans suffered all the damage and otherareas just received a lot of rain, the facts show something else entirely. Katrina was the costlienatural disaster in the history of the United States. At least 1,833 people died in the hurricaneand its aftermath making it the deadliest U.S. hurricane since the1928 Okeechobee hurri-cane. It also caused an estimated $81 billion in property damage. Entire towns were wiped offthe map.

While parts of the United States suffered no ill effects, for those caught in the storm, it was the End of the World. Te resultant case study revealed what happens to a population when their world is turned upside down, and they are left totally unprepared.

    Preparing Spiritually

    While many talk about

how to prepare for a disas-ter, they mainly talk abouttaking care of physicalneeds. Very little attentionis paid to how to spirituallyand psychologically preparefor such an event.

The Risk Equation yields a slightlydifferent answer.

Te hurricane and subsequent ood victims suffered from psychological disorders, suchas P SD 2 long after the waters receded and the rebuilding began. People experienced all sortsof emotionsthey had feelings of panic, a loss of control, anger and despair. Many felt dis-oriented along with a high degree ofanxiety .

Te images we saw on V were not those of people maddened by hunger and thirst, butthose of people wading through water clutching boxes of goods that are clearly not for im-mediate consumption. Tere were pictures of people looting stores not for food, but for beer, televisions, clothes and other nonessentials.

Tis irrationality showed up in other ways as well. Rescue helicopters were red on bythose they were trying to save. Apediatric hospital was attacked by roving gangs lookingfor whatever drugs they could nd. Tis disaster scratched off that thin veneer of civiliza-

tion and revealed that ruthless element of society that wants to protect itself and the un-accustomed power they found they had.FederalEmergency Management Agency Director MichaelBrown said his agency was attempting to work un-der conditions of urban warfare.

Some blame the government for this behavior;some blame society in general. Tere is no end to thenumber of reasons people attribute to this behavior.

Te ultimate reason for the resulting chaos can be explained this way:

Where there is no vision, the people perish: But he that keepeth the law, happy is he.Proverbs 29:18 (KJV)

When people do not have a moral compass, more importantly, a Biblical one, it is easyto fall into lawlessness and misery. One that lives by a moral code is much more likely to

come through adversity much better than those that live in a world of relativism and situ-ational ethics.

What Kind of Witness Will We Be?

Disasters like Katrina should make us think, as Christians, what would we do in such asituation? Opinions on this range from giving those in need everything you can, to defending

what you have to save yourself and your loved ones, even if that means resorting to violence.

In times of trouble, what kind of witnesswill we have? Howwill we face adversity? What will YOU do?

We will be spending approximately one week in the desert, thena week in Jerusalem, then a week up in theGalilee, ending with a week making our way toHaifa , then down to Caesarea and Netanya . Tis will be a Hebraic type of experience, one that includes conversational teaching as we traverse the Land together rather than in a classroom setting with pre-recorded materials. Our desire will be to provide an experientialtype of learning. We will not just have lessons onprayer and fasting ; we will actually be in-corporating these disciplines coinciding with our studies. Our ultimate goal will be to See

I wonder if Jesus had the words of Joshua in mind as he gave His message? Joshua chal-lengesIsrael in the same way.

And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lochoose for yourselves this day whom you will swhether the gods which your fathers served thwere on the other side of the River, or the godsthe Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

    Joshua 24:15 (NKJV)

Te challenge is to decide whom we will serve. Its the exact same challenge for us todaGod or money. God or possessions. When opposed to each other, God or country? Who wilyou serve? Many times the result of losing money or even thethreatof losing money is a rev-elation that MONEY was really your god. Choose wisely, my friends. We cannot serve both

O ver eight years ago I left a large church in San Diegoto become part of a new revolution. Mygut (okayprobably theHoly Spirit ) was telling me that God was leading me toa new type ofministry that had never been done before. So, I made the move andhitched my wagon to Chuck Missler and K-House and began

    this new work.

    Early Planning at Koinonia Institute

Even today I can remember the times that Chuck and I wouldspend in his officeplottin and schemin , at least thats what we called

we relished a new-found clarity.Over the weeks and months we discovered the three pillars the

Lord had given to us and thesepillars are what we used as a foundationto build what we now call Koinonia Institute. Tings seemed to be go-ing at warp speed back then and Chuck and I often quipped, Tere

they go and were their leaders! Now, as KI was being formed we were very cautious not to presentourselves as a replacement for the Church; we truly saw the Institute asa supplement to the Church.

With the Small Group revolution as a back-drop, along with Chucks past experiences inHome Fellowships, he recorded a opical StudycalledTe Once and Future Church. Heres whatChuck has to say about this teaching:

anOld and New estament Survey;Issachar Introduction to Prophecy and Koinonos Introduction to Spiritual Disciplines.

Te curriculum was the easy part, but now we needed to go beyond a self-study methodand start exploiting new technology calledOnline Learning ! Looking back I can remember

the fog lifting once again as we built three elements to each of these online classes. First, we made the material available in a variety of ways:MP3 , downloads,CDs , and of course

DVDs because we knew that people learn in different ways. Second, because we wanted interaction for ourstudents we put together Discussion Questions thatallowed them to both briey answers some questionsas well as to interact with other students in their class-

room. We had no idea how popular that aspect would be-

come! People began to build real community in theseonline classes! We then added weekly quizzes and a

comprehensive nal to complete the course.Last was the question of how to grade. We then came up with the following grading

    scale: Discussion Question participation = 25%; weekly quizzes = 25%; and ComprehensiveFinal = 50%.

Te amazing thing to remember is this was being done entirely on the Internet. Hun-dreds began to see the value of this and thousands of folks have joined Koinonia Instituteover the years, and to date it is staggering to think that we have awarded over 2300 BronzeMedallions!

early classes I would do an exit survey and was stunned to nd that one of the things that oustudents enjoyed the most were the Discussion Questions! Te reason? Because they foundother folks that had similar passions and were like-minded! I guess it was a kind of a validation that they werent weird! Part of it was because others had some of the same concernsregarding their church experiences; they really didnt want to leave but they could see theirchurch being compromised and slipping towards the things of the world. Even though wetoo could see this we still wanted to be cautious in not

So, this year we are seeking the Lord in regards to starting a regular weekly online broad-cast, which we are tentatively calling Te Koinonia International Fellowship.

One of our goals will be to include at least three segments into this weekly service: aBerean devotional, an Issachar Report and then get a glimpse of those who are doing it as

we highlight a Koinonos practicum. Again, just like back at the beginning we are praying for clarity, but as I reect back, the

words of Chuck Missler continue to ring in my earsthe church began in homes and mayone day end in homes!

What we are planning is the next step in creating an intentional online global Fellow-ship of like-minded Believers that are passionate about Discipleship!

As I am writing I hear the lyrics from a song from way back saying (or I guess praying)

    these words:

Bind us together, Lord bind us together with cords thacannot be broken! Bind us together, Lord bind us together with cordsof love!

    And as Solomon wrote:

Tough one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold conot quickly broken.

    Ecclesiastes 4:12

Please keep this endeavor in your prayers and keep your eyes open.

In this article, which was written in 2004, Nan opens with a truestory about a missionary who lost his faith in God and didnt nish the

In 1921, two young missionary couples inStockholm, Sweden , received a burden togo to the Belgian Congo (which is nowZaire). David and Svea Flood (along with theirtwo-year-old son) joined Joel and Bertha Erickson to battle insects, erce heat, malaria andmalnutrition . But after six months in the jungle, they had made little or no contact with the

native people. Although the Ericksons decided to return to the mission station, the Floodschose to stay in their lonely outpost. Svea was now pregnant and sick with malaria, yet she

faithfully continued to minister to their one and onlyconvert, a little boy from one of the nearby villages.

Svea died after giving birth to a healthy babygirl, and as David Flood stood over his beloved wifesgrave, he poured out his bitterness to God: Why did

You allow this? We came here to give our lives, and now my wife is dead at 27! All we haveto show for all this is one little village boy who probably doesnt even understand what wevetold him. Youve failed me, God. What a waste of life!

David Flood ended up making drastic emotional choices: he chose to leave his newdaughter with the Ericksons; he took his son back home with him to Sweden; and, fromthen on, he never allowed the name of God to be mentioned in his presence. His little girl

was raised in the Congo by an American missionary couple, who named their adopteddaughter Aggie.

Troughout her life, Aggie tried to locate her real father, but her letters were never an-swered. She never knew that David Flood had remarried and fathered four more children, and she never knew that he had plunged into despair and had become analcoholic . But

when she was in her forties, Ag-gie and her husband were givenround-trip tickets to Sweden, and

while spending a days layoverin London , the couple went tohear a well-known black preacherfrom the Belgian Congo.

After the meeting, Aggieasked the preacher, Did you everknow David and Svea Flood? o

her great surprise, he answered, Svea Floodled me to the Lord when I was a little boy.

Aggie was ecstatic to learn that her mothersonly convert was being mightily used to evan

gelize Zaire, and he was overjoyed to meet thdaughter of the woman who had introducedhim to Christ.

When Aggie arrived in Sweden, she lo-cated her father in an impoverished area ofStockholm, living in a rundown apartmentlled with empty liquor bottles. David Flood

was now a 73-year-olddiabetic who had hada stroke and whose eyes were covered withcataracts , yet when she identied herself, hebegan to weep and apologize for abandon-

ing her. But when Aggie said, Tats okay, Daddy, God took care of me, he became totallyenraged.

God didnt take care of you! he cried. He ruined our whole family! He led us to Af-rica and then betrayed us! Nothing ever came of our time there, and it was a waste of ourlives!

Tats when Aggie told him about the black preacher shed just met in London, and howthe Congo had been evangelized through the efforts of his

wifes one and only convert. As he listened to his daughter, theHoly Spirit suddenly fell on David Flood, and tears of sorrowand repentance began to ow down his face. Although Godmercifully restored him before he died, David Flood left be-hind ve unsaved and embittered children. His anger towards God had totally wasted his li potential and created a tragic legacy for his family.

aspect of our existence, and there is no sorrow so great that He cannot somehow recycle forth a blessing.Te deciding factor, however, is our own choice to release God to work.

    Nothing Shall Separate Us

Te above story exemplies that when we choose to follow our own feelings and desiresover Gods will, we quench His Spirit in us. Tis, then, blocks His Love not only from ow-ing through us to others, but also hinders us from experiencing His Love personally.

Psalm 119:70 explains this further. It says that when we make emotional choices, ourhearts become fat as grease (likekitchen lard !). Tis grease, then, not only clogs, chokesout and quenches any communication or personal leading from God, it also causes us to

become insensitive and unfeeling towards others. James describes this as the pure water of GodsSpirit getting blocked off and coming out bitter.( James 3:10-11 )

Its interesting to note that in a real life situ-ation, when you put grease or fat on a physicalburn , you not only make that area insensitive and

resistant to healing, you also cause ascar to be formed in its place. Sin and self are just likethat greasethey not only make us insensitive and resistant to Gods leading, they also leavescars on our lives. In other words, we always reap the consequences of our wrong choices, asclearly seen in the above story about Aggie.

    What Is Sin?

Te Bible tells us that sinis anything we choose to do orbelieve that is not of faith.(Romans 14:23 ) Now, if we areChristians who sin, God remainsin our hearts, but His Spirit willbe quenched and thus, His Life inour hearts is blocked from com-ing forth.

When I used to think of sin,I thought of the list in Galatians

5:19-21 and I could say, Hey, Im really okay. Idont do those kinds of things! But, then I cameacross a little book calledTe Calvary Road by RoyHession that changed my life.

In this little book, there is a list of subtle thingsthat cover our hearts and separate us from GodsLife just as much as the big ones of Galatians 5 .Let me recall just a few:Self-pity, self-defensiveness,oversensitivity, criticalness, resentfulness, worry, grumbling, bossiness, self-complacency, self-energy, self-seeking, self-indulgence, and self-consciousness.

Te above list describes sins that quench GodsSpirit and cover our hearts just as much as the big-gies of Galatians 5. Tese little sins cover ourhearts with grease, form a barrier or a blockage andprohibit Gods Life from being experienced, notonly personally, but alsothrough us to others.

An Example: Could I Borrow Some Money?

Joanne was a hairdresser in a Christian salon and a total perfectionist. She never couldstand any untidiness or messiness in her booth. She befriended Susie, a Christian who

worked in the booth next to hers. Susie was a single mom, who out of necessity (when herbaby-sitter did not show up) brought her two little children to work with her. Of course, the kids often brought crackers and cookies, and before long the whole place became a totadisaster.

Joanne tried to put up with this situation for a while. She smiled and pretended every-

thing was ne, even sometimes taking care of Susies children. But after months of the incovenience and the mess, she unknowingly allowed deep roots of bitterness to grow.

Like many of us, Joanne didnt realize that when we dont deal with our real negativethoughts and emotions right away, they form a barrier (grease) over our hearts and can be-come the motivation for many of our actions.

One day while out shopping, Joanne ran into Susie who was trying to buy some clothesSusiesestranged husband was coming over the next night for a visit, and Susie was hop-

ing there might be achance for a reconcilia-tion. When Susie wentto pay for the clothes,

however, the cashier forsome reason couldnttake her credit card. Shedidnt have any cash inher purse, so she quicklyturned to Joanne andasked, Please, could I

borrow some money? Illpay you back at work in the morning.

Before Joanne could even think, she responded with, No, Im really sorry, but... andthen she made up some feeble excuse for why she couldnt loan Susie the money. Joanne actu-ally had plenty of money in her purse, but because her heart was so clogged by resentmentand bitterness, she reacted out of that grease, rather than Gods Love.

Susie responded, Oh, I understand. I was just hoping to make tomorrow night special. Itsokay.

And then she left. Joanne was mortied. Shecould hardly believe what had just came out ofher mouth. She could have easily lent Susie themoney, because she had plenty in her purse. Guiltand shame consumed her. She nally went to the

ladies room to regain her composure. In the bathroom, she wept, asking the Lord to forgiveher. He exposed the bitterness and resentment that she was still harboring in her heart againstSusie for always bringing her children to work. Joanne thanked God for revealing the truth, chose to confess and repent of it and then, to give it over to the Lord, knowing that He

would forgive her and cleanse her. When she left the bathroom and went back into the store, she saw Susies pile of clothes

still sitting there on the counter. Prompted by the Holy Spirit, she bought the clothes as a gift

for Susie. When Joanne went to work the next morning, she told Susie the whole story, askeher forgiveness and then gave her the love gift out of her heart. Once again the sweetfountain water of Gods Life in Joannes heart was able to ow. ( James 3:10-11 ) When wedaily wash our hearts with that cool, fresh, running water of Gods Word by confessing, re-

penting, and giving our sins to God, our sin and our self will not only be washed away, butno scars will be left!

    Chain Reaction of Our Soul

One of the more interesting things I learned when I was writingBe Ye ransformed isthat there is a natural mental and emotional chain reaction in each of our souls. In other

words, if we could peel back the outer layer of our soul, we would see that ourthoughts trig-

ger our emotions ; our emotions then stir up our desires ; and, our desires produce ouractions .In other words, every action we take really comes from four split decisions. Since ourthoughts are the rst to be triggered in this chain-reaction, God puts great emphasis on themthroughout Scripture. He knows that if we can catch the negative thoughts when they rstoccur, then well be able to stop the whole chain reaction before it even begins. And thus, wmight be able to prevent some of the sin before it occurs in our lives.

What happens, however, when wedont take every thought captive is that we end upbeing carried on by the tide of emotion (that chain reaction), quenching Gods Spirit, andthen His Life in our hearts is thwarted. Tis is why 2 Corinthians 10:5 exhorts us to: ...bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. In other words, we are to stopand examine the thoughts

we have. Now, obviously, wecant examine every th
