As Proverbs 18:13 states, “He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him.” As maturing Christians, we should find value in diverse views challenging us to further study and to be open to additional perspectives. WHO JESUS IS

FROM THE EDITOR

Dr. Gordon McDonaldExecutive Editor, Personal UPDATE

PROBABLY BECAUSE OF OUR VANTAGE POINT or our focus, each passing month seems to bring conflict closer to us than ever before. From the success of ISIS in the Middle East, to the Gaza/Israel disharmony, the Ukrainian/Russian strife and now to Fergu-son, Missouri, the conflicts are consistently growing and proliferating.

In this setting we are reminded that conflict is not our way. We are to live peaceably, as best we can, with all. We are reminded and instructed by the example of our Christian brothers and sisters that came before, to be “peace makers.” Being right was not as important as being lov-ing. It is who Jesus was...and is.

This month a new book from Dr. Chuck Missler and Dr. William P. Welty, entitled I, Jesus: an Autobiography, is being released. It deals with who Jesus is in His own words. It will, I am sure, provide many surprises for you. Often, what we have been taught He said and what He actually said are only almost the same. And, as Chuck has reminded us before, that “almost” is very important.

As the world seems to dissolve around us, it will become evermore important to know how Je-sus would have responded. This can only be done with a clear understanding of who He really is. There is no better witness to that than Jesus Himself.

This is an excellent opportunity to reassess our understanding of Him and, consequently, how and what we are being asked to emulate. Don’t be a victim of what you don’t know. Don’t let a world of conflict produce compro-mise. Know Him, so when He arrives He will know you.

Maranatha, Come quickly, Lord Jesus. We are yours and we are ready.

IN GENESIS 14, AFTER THE BATTLE OF THE NINE KINGS, ABRAM ENCOUN-TERS A FABULOUS PERSONAGE WHO WAS BOTH KING AND PRIEST OF SALEM. WHO IS MELCHIZEDEK?

Recently Bob Cornuke asked me to join him in Israel to do some re-search for his book, Temple, and so Ron Matsen and Louis Pow-ell joined me to go exploring under the City of David (“Zion”). We were guests of Eli Shukron from the Israeli Antiquities

Authority. While there we found a stele (see photo, below) that potentially

could eclipse anything else we might have found: it may have been erected by Melchizedek himself!

A stele is a slab, usually oblong, not forming part of a structure but set up in a vertical position, for votive purposes or as a memorial to some person or event. (“Votive”: offered, given, undertaken, or per-formed or dedicated in fulfilment of, or in accordance with, a vow.)

We may have encountered a vastly more significant dis-covery than anything we could have imagined!

ing the Battle of the Nine Kings,1 Abram (later, Abraham) encoun-tered this fabulous personage who was both king and priest of Salem (Jerusalem).2

Astonishingly, we note that Abram gave him tithes, and he, in turn, administered bread and wine to Abram! Who is he? And why does he receive tithes? The theme of the bread and wine also finds its echo throughout the Scriptures, climaxing with the Lord’s Supper.3

Paul insists that this was also prophetic: “For as often as ye eat this

bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord’s death till he come.”4 Was the Melchizedek administration also prophetic? These few verses in Genesis 14

might have dimmed into obscurity except that they are echoed in Psalm 110, one of the most quoted Psalms in the New Testament5 and which underscores a sworn oath of God Himself: “The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.”6

The distinctives of this king and priest then become the focus of three chapters in the Epistle to the Hebrews: chapters 5, 6, and 7. These distinctives literally supersede the previous separa-tion of the kingship and priesthood, which are enforced throughout the Old Testament! (Many of the speculations about this mysterious person-age known as “Melchizedek” are punctured by Hebrews 7.)

This topic further climaxes at the very Throne of God in Revelation Chapter 5 when the Redeemed identify themselves (uniquely) as both “kings and priests.”

While there we found a stele that potentially could eclipse anything else we might have found: it may have been erected by Melchizedek himself!

Another Subset within a Larger Reality?

It almost ap-pears that the entire Jewish experi-ence—from the call of Abraham to the Second Coming of the Messiah—is but a kind of parenthesis

within an even larger reality yet to be revealed!I can’t help being reminded of our previous articles on the “bound-

aries of our physical reality,” in which we noted that both the Macro-cosm (things larger than man) and the Microcosm (things smaller than man) are finite, and that our “reality” is but a virtual digital simula-

tion—which is but a subset of a yet larger reality, referred to as the “Metacosm.”7

What a fabulous God we serve! His wonders never cease.

NEWTOPICAL STUDY

• Who was this strange Priest/King that received tithes from Abraham? (…and administered bread and wine to him?)

• How is Melchizedek relevant to the Messiah of Israel?

• Did Melchizedek have a temple that predated Solomon’s?

• Why are the distinctives so divergent from the enforced separation of the kingship and priesthood under David?

Deriving from some very recent discoveries in Jerusalem (although some are yet to be confirmed), these studies may challenge many of the comfortable traditions that have shaped our classic Biblical perspectives. Join Chuck as he explores some fascinating challenges to our previous understandings of things that will shape our ultimate destiny!

I, Jesus: an Autobiography is the rather bold title of a new book that Dr. Chuck Missler and I wrote earlier this year about Jesus of Nazareth. We’re happy to announce that it’s intended to be the first formal textbook published on behalf of the Koinonia Institute’s study program. We hope it will be followed by many others.

Our decision to write this apologetic work sprang from a conversation the two of us had in mid-January of 2014 about the cultural mythology that affects—or, more accurately, in-fects—our largely Christ-rejecting culture concerning the person of Jesus of Nazareth.

As we were talking, it occurred to us that perhaps we should address the subject of the person of Jesus himself in some depth. The result of those discussions is our new book. We hope that friends of this ministry throughout the world will find it useful.

Our intention is to release the material contained in this work as a printed book, an electronic eBook in a variety of popular formats, a DVD series, and a PowerPoint® presenta-

tion suitable for use by teachers of apologetics, which is that branch of systematic theology that deals with the defense of the Christian faith.

Frankly, we wrote I, Jesus: an Autobiography in order to set the record straight. That’s because, chances are, Jesus isn’t who most of the world thinks he is. No matter what you may have read before about this first century rabbi from Nazareth, there’s a good possibility that the average reader has been misinformed.

In fact, maybe you’ve been wrong from the start about the most amazing man who ever walked the surface of the earth.

Many people who knew Jesus understood him well enough to admire him, to respect him, and to love him. Others were terrified of him. Some of his own relatives said he was out of his mind. But the politically and religiously intolerant leaders of first century Israel hated him. So they murdered him.

But that wasn’t the end of the story. Not by a long shot.Today, more than twenty centuries later, Dr. Chuck Missler and I

have brought Jesus of Nazareth to you in the most unconventional way possible… by bringing Jesus of Nazareth to talk in his very own words

about himself, his purpose, his nature, and his mission.

Jesus in His Own Words

This book avoids the structure of a complex conclusion of systematic theology by letting Jesus speak for himself, in his own words as recorded by the New Testament writers. As such, we’ve taken the bold step to en-

title this work I, Jesus: an Autobiography, because we’re going to let the man speak for himself, using his own statements as our guide to what he thought of himself. In a sense, we’re going to create an autobiography of this rabbi who grew up in Nazareth and changed the course of history.

No matter what you may have read before about this first century rabbi from Nazareth, there’s a good possibility that the average reader has been misinformed.

In Part One of our study, we’ll demonstrate that Jesus made no less than 32 separate and astounding claims concerning himself, claims that in the cultural and theological economy of monotheistic Israel were nothing less than blasphemy.

• We’ll show that the man claimed to be the God of Israel, Yahweh Elohim, not merely divine, like a manifestation of deity. • We’ll demonstrate how Jesus claimed to have an eternal pre-existence that antedated Abraham, the world’s first Jew, so to speak, who was the founder and progenitor of the people of Israel and lived and died about 2,000 years before Jesus was born in Bethlehem. • We’ll illustrate how Jesus predicted that he was going to be executed, but that afterward he would

rise from the dead, and that he would be the one who would make that resurrection happen.

• We’ll show that Jesus predicted the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem about forty years before the event occurred.

• We’ll show that the man claimed to possess a detailed knowledge about how history

would run for the centuries to come until his eventual return, and that when he did return, he would conquer the world by invading it, accompanied by an invincible army whose soldiers can neither be wounded nor killed.

• We’ll establish that he claimed personal attributes which in the theological economy of ancient Israel belonged only to the uncre-ated, eternal, and almighty Lord God Yahweh Elohim himself.

• We’ll discuss his remarkable claims that all of the angels of heaven were his personal property.

• We’ll point out his astounding statement that everyone who has ever lived would stand before him in judgment at the end of human history.

• We’ll show how he said that he would be the person who resurrects everyone from the dead at the end of time.

• And we’ll explain how Jesus claimed that he and he alone would be the determiner of every person’s eternal destiny.

Then we’ll conclude by summarizing how the Church defined the person, nature, character, and mission of Jesus of Nazareth.

What Others Said About Him

In Part Two, we’ll conclude our analysis by un-dertaking a survey about what the rest of the New

Testament says about Jesus in light of the astonishing claims that he made about himself. We’ll show how New Testament writers, all of whom claimed to have known the man per-sonally and to have spoken to him, concluded from their knowledge of him that when they were speaking to Jesus, they were speaking to the same omnipotent, eternal, omniscient, and

holy Being whom their ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob addressed as God and before whom they bowed in worship.

The difference between them and their fore-fathers, however, was that this time, the God of Israel had taken on human flesh, and would carry that incarnation from the day of his birth right into eternity future.

Once he took upon himself human flesh, the God of Israel would forever be “Emmanuel,” or, as the Hebrew name means, “God with us” in human form.

We’ll examine what the Hebrew Scriptures have to say about the man. We’ll take a look at seven short letters (almost telegraphic in their brevity) that Jesus dictated, in which he

makes mention of a few things about himself. We’ll also examine the various ways in which over the centuries the Church attempted to clarify what the Bible says about Jesus the Man and Jesus the Son of God made human in the person of the rabbi from Nazareth.

A Call for a Decision about Jesus

Lastly, we’ll summarize the false views about Jesus that have been promulgated to one degree or another over the last twenty centuries. Then we’ll invite the reader to meet this man, who though he described himself as lowly and humble, nevertheless made the most ex-traordinary claims about himself that anyone has ever made, because he described himself as equal in nature, attribute, authority, and character to God himself.

By the time you’ve finished reading I, Jesus: an Autobiography, you’ll have learned why this rabbi from Nazareth rose from literal obscurity—as well as from the grave—to change the very course of history. [See special pre-order pricing on the next page.]

A MAN-MADE DISASTER

THE MIDDLE EAST

T he stunning recent military successes by the Islamic militant group ISIS have signaled a sea-change in the region and is causing a fragmentation of the Iraqi and Syrian nations into a Somali-like anarchy. Lebanon and Suez are becoming no-man’s lands, and

Jordan is on the brink of revolution. Behind all this tumult is Iran, supporting various rebel factions with the dream of forming a Shia Caliphate in the region, and they are using the Ottoman Empire as a template.

Many were surprised at how quickly sovereign nations fell into chaos, but a look into history would show this realignment of power was inevitable.

The Sykes-Picot Agreement

The recent developments in Iraq have at their root a secret, centu-ry-old agreement between two men: one man a British colonel, Mark Sykes, and the other a French consul, George Picot. In what became known as the Sykes-Picot Agreement, these two men agreed upon the division of Ottoman Empire territories in 1916 and changed the face of the region for decades to come.

These agreements, formalized at the end of World War I, carved up the Middle East for the sole purpose of benefitting the victors of that war and gave little thought to the people who had lived there for

generations. Since the Ottoman Empire sided with Germany in the war, Great Britain and France carved up the empire to suit their geopolitical needs. (Russia was dealt out of the ne-gotiations and the United States renounced any territorial claims in the region.)

At the time of the agreement’s implementation, the Ottoman Empire still existed. The empire was led by a series of caliphs (religious-political leaders), with the last one being Sul-tan Mehmed VI (1918-1922). The political element of the Ottoman caliphate ended with the founding of Turkey in November 1922, led by Kemal Ataturk. Its spiritual component lingered on until March 1924, when Turkey’s parliament (at Ataturk’s urging) formally abol-ished it.

In late 1915 and early 1916, before the end of World War I, the Sykes-Picot Agreement was implemented. For four centuries, Iraq had been part of the Ottoman Empire. That empire, which had once stretched from the Balkans to the Persian Gulf, was now over, a casualty of war. A host of independent and semi-independent nations would eventually take its place in the Middle East.

An Agreement Based on Oil

World War I was the first war fueled by oil. No longer were armies moving around by animal power. They were moving by gasoline-powered internal combustion engines and oil-fired steam turbines. Ordinary citizens were also starting to drive cars, and oil became a commodity people and nations soon realized they could not do without.

Page 23: Personal Update – September, 2014

23 / UPDATE / SEPTEMBER 2014 COVER CONTENTS ORDER

Prospects for any oil development within the British Empire to fill this growing need were bleak, which made supplies from the Middle East of vital importance. Sir Maurice Hankey, the powerful secretary of the British War Cabinet, wrote to Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour that, “oil in the next war will occupy the place of coal in the present war, or at least a parallel place to coal. The only big potential supply that we can get under British

control is the Persian and Mesopotamian (Iraqi) supply.” Therefore, Hankey said, “control over these oil supplies becomes a first-class British war aim.”

The British had recognized how important it would be to have access to petroleum reserves. Control of the region would also connect other British interests and what was then British India.

The French, on the other hand, had emerging business relationships with the large Med-iterranean port cities of Beirut, Sidon and Tyrus. Paris wanted to use Sykes-Picot to secure access to these cities.

The agreement redrew the region with a dividing line starting at Kirkuk, Iraq and ex-tending to Haifa, Israel, with the ter-ritories north of the line going to France and the territories south of the divid-ing line falling under the control of the British.

The area that was divided is part of what is called the Levant. The term “Levant” (coming from the French le-ver, “to rise” [i.e., the

sun]), encompasses the lands of the eastern Mediterranean—primarily Asia Minor and Syria-Israel. Syria and Lebanon comprise the northern sections of the Levant while Egypt anchored the southern end. The Le-vant served as a land bridge, connecting the great cultural centers located in Mesopota-mia and Egypt.

The historical importance of the make-up of the Levant and the composition of its people were largely ignored by Europe when the great powers, primarily Great Britain

and France, met to determine their fate.At the beginning of World War I, the Ottoman Empire had already begun its decline,

with modern-day Turkey being the most significant component. To keep the Ottoman Turks pinned down in the region and to keep them from assisting the Germans, the Arabs living in the region were told that if they sided with the Allies against their Ottoman masters they would gain independence.

Dividing the Land

Under the Sykes-Picot Agreement most of Meso-potamia was to be British, while the Syrian coast from Tyre to Alexandretta was to be French, along with Armenian and Asia Minor (primarily Turkey) regions to the north. “Palestine” (the Land of Israel) was to be “international,” but its chief seaport, Haifa, was to be British. The French sphere of influence was also to encompass the rest of Syria from Aleppo to Damascus and the English sphere would embrace all the rest of Mesopotamia, primarily the region around Mosul.

There was also a general understanding that “Pal-estine” fell within the English sphere of influence. It

Page 25: Personal Update – September, 2014

Henner Fürtig

was also agreed that the land lying between Mesopotamia (Iraq) and the Syrian coast was to be “independent Arab under two spheres of influence.”

The independence promised to the Arabs by the English (and reiterated by Col. T. E. “Lawrence of Arabia”) had vanished.1

The Goal of ISIS: Erase the Borders

Sykes-Picot resulted in a region with states composed of a variety of ethnic groups and re-ligions. ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) would like to erase those borders, calling for an all-Islamic state in the form of a greater caliphate. The group’s name makes it clear that they hope to undo the boundaries they view as being imposed on them by the Western-dhimmis powers.

Many analysts also see the upheaval in the Levant as a realignment of the region to a configuration of national boundaries that existed before Sykes-Picot went into effect.

“The artificiality of state formation has caused numerous conflicts over the last few decades,” said Henner Fürtig, director of the Institute of Middle East Studies at GIGA research institute in Hamburg. “These questions haven’t been solved for a century and burst open again and again, in a cycle, like now with the ISIS advance in northern Iraq.”

In the face of the ISIS onslaught, it is becoming evident that the collapse of political order in Iraq is just a first step toward the new caliphate.

threatens the security of the Jewish nation, but there may be more, farther-reaching consequences.

The current Mideast bedlam has many taking a fresh look at a prophetic psalm vastly overlooked. This is Psalm 83, which discusses the formation of a ten member, predominately Arab, confederacy des-tined to seek the total destruction of the nation of Israel.

Psalm 83 has recently been invoked because Israel’s enemies, many of whom fall within the hoped-for Islamic caliphate, appear to be among the prophesied ten-member coalition.

It would be wise to take another look at Psalm 83 and pray for a greater understanding of the psalm and its timeline.

T he anti-Semitism of the early Church is one of the great tragedies of history. While the teach-ings of Jesus came straight from the Hebrew Scriptures, a backlash against ritualistic devotion to the Law developed into a deliberate attempt to steer early Christians away from the Old Testament.

Tensions with the Jews led to severe persecution as the Church became a dominant political institution during subsequent centuries. A wedge was driven between Jews and Christians, although both worshipped the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Jewish communities developed a staunch resistance to Jesus as the Messiah, and Christians lost the richness of Jewish history and prophecy, the very foundations of faith in Jesus Christ.

As Christians, we need to discover our Jewish roots. Many of the teachings of Christianity take on deeper insight and meaning when we understand them in a Jewish context, and few places is this more clear than in a study of the feasts of Israel. The seven feasts of Moses are not only commemorative historically as they are observed in Judaism, but every detail of these seven feasts are anticipatory of the person, mission and achievement of the Messiah.

number, every place name, even implied punctuation are there by design. The Bible contains 66 books by 40 authors, and yet the entire volume is a single, integrated message system. The Appointed Times

The feasts of the Torah were directly dic-tated by God to Moses. The Hebrews called the feasts of Israel “the Appointed Times,” and the Jewish calendar offers many treasures to New Testament Christians even today.

The Law itself is our tutor. Jesus empha-sizes the prophetic importance of the Law in John 5:46-47 when He tells the Jews, “For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?”

We might expect Jesus to fulfill the words of the prophetic books of the Bible, but Jesus makes it clear that He came to satisfy the words of the Law as well. The very Torah, the five books of Moses down to every last little dot, tells us about the Messiah.

In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus assures His disciples:

“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.”

Matthew 5:17-18

In Hebrew, a jot looks like an apostro-phe, hardly more than a little scratch. Tittles may have been the diacritical marks that sug-gest vowels, or they may have been decorative hooks on the letters. In other words, Jesus

declares that every detail of the Hebrew Scriptures is important,

down to the tiniest letters and marks.

If He were speaking in English, Jesus might have said, “Not one

crossing of a ‘t’ or dotting of an ‘i’ will pass from the Law till all be fulfilled.”

The Old Testament is not merely a collection of Jewish history and Law; it is

God’s message of salvation to a fallen human-ity. Paul picks up on this when he says in Romans

15:4: “For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” The ultimate commentary of the Bible is the Bible itself.

The Feasts of Israel

Let no man therefore judge you in meat, drink, or in respect of any holyday or of the new moon, or of Sabbath days. Which are a shadow of things to come;

but the body is of Christ…Colossians 2:16-17

The Law clearly gives commandments regarding holy days, celebrations that Israel was commanded to remember

and keep year after year. Yet Paul warns the Chris-tian churches not to get caught up in the Law and judging one another over who celebrates when or eats what. Israel was commanded to keep the feast days because they reflected the mysteries that God

wanted to reveal to His children in the years to come. Each of the seven feasts of Moses has a historical root, but none are limited to it—Paul

says they were given as a shadow of greater realities. Each feast has a prophetic role as well,

a pattern for our greater understanding. It is provocative to note that not only are the feasts prophetic, but each gets fulfilled at its appointed time on the very day it is observed.

The first three feasts are in the spring; the Passover Feast, the Feast of Unleavened Bread, and the Feast of Firstfruits. They all occur in the first month of the religious year, Nisan. Shavuot, The Feast of Weeks, is celebrated 50 days after the Feast of Firstfruits. The final three appointed times are held in the fall, during the month of Tishri: the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, and the Feast of Tabernacles.

This year, Israel’s Fall Feasts occur in September and October. [It is also important to remember that these feasts begin at sundown. The Scriptures do not reckon a day from mid-night to midnight or from dawn to dawn, but from sunset to sunset.]

The Fall Feasts

Tishri is the first month of the New Year on the Jewish civil calendar. While Rosh Ha-shanah has been celebrated on this day since the return from Babylon, it is Yom Teruah that is the Scriptural feast. There are a variety of views regarding the prophetic implications of this feast, prophecies yet to be fulfilled.

The ten days between the Feast of Trumpets and the Day of Atonement (including the two feast days) are referred to as Yamim Noraim, the days of affliction or days of awe. The Day of Atonement, the most solemn day on the Jewish calendar, follows on the 10th of Tishri. Even the Jews who honor very little else will make it a point to honor Yom Kippur as a day of repentance, of getting right with God. Most take this day quite seriously.

Yom Kippur is the day of Israel’s national repentance. The Jews repent both as individu-als and as a nation on this day. Prophetically, I believe Hosea 5:15 alludes to the present day

...but each gets fulfilled at its appointed time on the

very day it is observed.

when God says, “I return to my place un-til they acknowledge their offence; in their affliction, they will seek me earnestly.”

Five days after Yom Kippur (and inci-dentally five is the number for Grace), the temporary dwellings of Sukkot begin to fill yards and balconies and rooftops. The Feast of Tabernacles is a reminder of the years that the Israelites lived in makeshift booths during the years after their rescue from Egypt.

The Feasts and the Christian

Although we know that we have been freed from the Law and the “observances” of new moons, feasts etc., there is still value in understanding the roots of the Feasts. And if they can be used for edification and growth for the Christian, then why not take advantage of these so-called “rehearsals”?

Instead of approaching New Years in the way our culture puts it forth, why not take the time to reflect on the past year and during the Days of Awe ask the Holy Spirit to assist you

in evaluating your walk. Give Him control and allow Him to free you from the things that can so easily entangle you.

Over the last two years The King’s High Way has been bringing back articles that Nan has written over the last two decades. This month it is such a blessing to have her write a fresh update on her new book, Hope Against Hope, which has just come out and to have her share some personal insight into

what hope really is and how vitally important it is. On Saturday, November 8th, Nan and I will be teaching these

principles at our Hope Conference at Grace Chapel in Franklin, Ten-nessee. For more information you can contact our ministry at 866-775-5464 or go to our website at www.kingshighway.org. We know that you wiwikill be encouraged and spiritually edified by this relevant teaching. We look forward to meeting you.

I also want to praise the Lord for all He has done for me over the past year and a half. It’s been an incredible journey and I’ve learned so much more about His faithfulness.

It all began a year ago January (2013), when I was told I had “malignant melanoma” of the mucous area of my nose (not a skin cancer) and that if I didn’t do certain things (like let-ting them take my face off) I would die within a few months. But the Lord had other plans for me and that’s the story I want to tell you. I want to encourage you that if He can do these things in my life, He can also do them in yours.

My story begins four years ago when I set out to write a book on the subject of “hope,” not only because I saw it as an essential part of the Christian life, but also because I saw

many believers struggling in this critical area. So, it seemed like a very timely subject. It took me a year to write the first 300 pages, but even then I knew in my spirit that something was missing. It was not complete. Even when I took the manuscript into the King’s High Way ministry for a review, they were all very sweet and kind, but told me the very same

thing—“something is missing. It’s not complete.” So I put the manuscript aside, prayed, and asked God to show me what exactly was

missing. The Lord faithfully answered my prayer by showing me that what was missing from that manuscript was “personal experience.” (I had written that first manuscript sitting on the shores of a New Zealand river, with no worries at all. Well, you can’t write a book from your “head”—you need to have “personal heart experience” of the subject and I really didn’t have

that at the time.) So God allowed me to go

through my own Valley of the Shadow of Death so that I could personally experience what it means to have “hope against hope.”

My Story

My new book Hope Against Hope will give you all the details

I really want to con-centrate on the part of the book that fo-cuses on the subject of Hope...

Page 36: Personal Update – September, 2014

of how I got the cancer, how Mayo Clinic heard about my case and agreed to take me as an experimental patient (because my kind of cancer was so rare—1 in 100,000), how I’ve had three huge operations where they literally replaced the septum of my nose and gave me a new nose; and finally, how the melanoma has come back four or five times. But, in these articles for Personal UPDATE I really want to concentrate on the part of the book that focuses on the subject of Hope—what exactly hope is; why it’s so important, why we lose it and how we can regain it back.

But, before we start, I want to be totally up front with you. Please don’t think of me as some kind of saint, a flawless or perfect Christian. Certainly, I am not! I’ve had so much pain and anxiety, discouragement and doubt, worry and confusion this past year, that like Job, I’ve cried out many times to the Lord, “Why have You forsaken me?” Like Job, I just didn’t understand what was happening to me.

I had such huge expectations (remember the word EXPECTATIONS) of what the Lord was going to do through my illness (and because of all the prayers), that I was devastated when things didn’t happen that way. I believed with all my heart that God would somehow do a “miracle”—either I would be supernaturally healed or I would lead many others to Christ or somehow lots of “fruit” would be produced. So, I was absolutely crushed when all these things didn’t occur.

Rather than draw people towards the Lord, which is what we had hoped would happen, just the opposite occurred. Nurses kept getting offended at us; doctors were often sarcastic and belittling and rather than develop a relationship with these people like we so wanted, they fled from us. It was so strange. It was like the enemy had this huge inroad and mon-

strous stronghold and he wasn’t going to give it up for anything.

So in the midst of this spiritual battle, it became very difficult for me “to see” the Lord’s Hand at work and to trust His faithfulness, which then affected my confidence that He was still involved and still working.

And, of course, I couldn’t stand to look in the mirror. The horror that I saw was overwhelming. Philippians 3:8 tells us to: “…count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge

of Christ.” I thought I had done that before! I’ve said that verse a hundred times, but this time it had taken on a whole different physical meaning and was so difficult to say and mean (Luke 22:42; Mark 14:33-3).

Now, I wish I could say that I sailed through all my operations and procedures like a “trooper.” But, here again, I didn’t, which of course added to my confusion and doubt. I was sick to my stomach most of the time, not only from the surgery, but also from the

medications they gave me afterwards. I experienced nausea, dizziness, sinus headaches and congestion, double vision, infection, diarrhea, constipation, heart pain, mouth rash (from air tubes), boils and inflamed gums. You name it, I had it! I again thought a lot about Job dur-ing this time.

Became Hopeless

So, yes, I can now say that over the last year and a half, I have “personally experienced” hopelessness in a variety of ways. Emotionally (I’ve been separated from all the people I know and love—my husband, my children, my family), physically (It’s been the hardest year of my life—more pain than I’ve ever experienced), mentally (I’ve lost the vision Chuck and I had for

New Zealand) and spiritually (I’ve lost the daily blessing of being with my spiritual family). When you lose your hope, you not only lose your grounding and mooring for the pres-

ent, you also lose your vision and your dreams for the future. My daughter phrases it this way: “You don’t die if you lose your ‘faith’; but, you die if you lose your ‘hope.’”

Hopelessness is like darkness. It occurs when you pray and pray and pray and yet, you still receive no answer. In fact, everything continues to turn out against you. I got to the point where I didn’t even know how to pray anymore.

The Problem

What I didn’t realize at the time, was that by my holding on to my own expectations and my own presump-tions of what God was going to do and how He was going to do it, I prevented Him from showing me His own Handprint of Love in my situation. And thus, I found it very difficult to go on.

Now, we all have expectations and presumptions—it’s characteristic of our own self-cen-tered human nature. This, in itself, is not sin. However, if our expectations are not fulfilled in the way we think they should be, those expectations can lead us to disappointment and doubt, which is sin and which will end up quenching God’s Spirit in us. And, that’s exactly what happened to me.

Here’s where the confusion comes in for many of us (and where the enemy has an ab-solute field day). We get a promise from God and we interpret it in our own way, but when it doesn’t ma-terialize in the way we thought, we get confused and discouraged and of course, fall right into the enemy’s hands. It’s not that God has been unfaithful to us, it’s that we have jumped to our own conclusions and our own interpretations. No wonder we then don’t see God’s Hand in our situation.

There’s two ways of looking at God’s promises: we can either have

...you also lose your vision and your dreams for the future.

our expectations and our hopes on what we think God is saying and what we think He is going to do; or, we can have our expectations and our hopes only upon God’s faithfulness to answer our prayers in His timing and His way.

It was only when I began to “let go” of my own interpretation and my own expectation of what God was going to do and how He would do it, and instead, grab a hold of the fact that God will be faithful to me no matter what happens, that I began to have some victory in my life.

Scripture tells us that the only way Moses endured his trials and the darkness in his life, was by daily “seeing the Lord who is invisible in the midst of the fire.” (Hebrews 11:27) This is the KEY! Moses saw God’s faithfulness in the middle of his trials, which then gave him the hope to carry on.

“Hope against hope” means exactly that—trusting God’s faithfulness to fulfill His promises in His timing and in His way. This is the lesson the Lord has taught me this past year and the reason I have been able to make it thus far.

The question becomes: “How do you learn to have this kind of hope?” This is what we

pray our new book Hope Against Hope will help to explain.

“Hope against hope” means exactly that—trust-ing God’s faithfulness to fulfill His promises in His timing and in His way.

NORTHEAST UNITED STATES UPDATE: REGIONS 1 - 4

by Chris Corlett

A s we anticipate Autumn 2014 and look ahead to all of 2015, KI seeks to supple-ment your online experi-ence with face-to-face fel-

lowship opportunities. We want to be in your community, not just in your computer! With cold and short winter days approaching the Northeastern United States, these local opportunities can provide both warmth and light. We need only look to a small fellow-ship in the Dayton Ohio area for one successful model that achieves this goal.

KI Coordinator Pat Austin partners with Pastor Ken Majors of Christ Community Church in Medway, Ohio to incorporate KI classes into the weekly church calendar. Monday night coursework focuses on Bronze level courses and Thursday night coursework offers participants the opportunity to work toward their Silver Medallions. This program, called Christ Community Institute (“CCI”), has fostered thirteen Bronze

Page 52: Personal Update – September, 2014

K o i n o n i a I n s t i t u t e • k o i n o n i a i n s t i t u t e . o r g

medallion holders. Even one Silver medallion has been awarded through the ministry of CCI!

“Studying God’s Word through KI has been a tremendous experience. Receiving my Bronze Medallion was a high point of my Christian studies. But more important than receiving the medallion was the knowledge of the Word of God that has been hidden in my heart. I am so thankful for KI and CCI!” – Jackie Major

“A Silver Medallion hangs on the wall next to my Bronze for a little over two years now. It is a memo-rial not just of a course of study, but it is a memorial of all that the Father has accomplished at Christ Community Institute since 2009 - and it’s not over. Not only is there a blank spot on my wall reserved for a Gold Medallion, there is anticipation for all God has is in store for us in the coming years.” – Pat Austin

This small rural church had a limited capacity for a quality and meaningful Biblical study program. KI provided both the teaching and the fellowship needed for personal and corporate growth. Pat and Ken have been friends and ministry partners for six years and what Pat proposed to Ken gained immediate traction.

“I remember Pastor Ken sharing his long-held vision with the church one Sunday morning in late 2009 – a Bible Institute that would allow members to study the Word and earn college credits at the same time. I had been involved for many years in secular adult education classes and also small group Bible studies, so I approached him that day and offered to serve the church in fulfilling that vision. After looking at several different types of Bible College offerings, Koinonia Institute proved the best choice. Not only did it offer what we were looking for, it was so affordable that anyone could be involved. The KI staff (especially Stan Honn) was wonderful in helping us get Christ Community Institute established and Stan has labored patiently and tirelessly to help us keep these classes continuing. We feel so blessed to be a small part of what KI is accomplishing worldwide.” – Pat Austin

The next step is starting new courses based on the changing needs and earned medallions for the folks in and around the Medway / Dayton area. If you are interested in participating in these plans, contact Pat Austin at [email protected]. If you are interested in hosting or participating in a small group KI Bible study suited to your needs in your area, contact your KI Deputy Provost. Information is avail-able at www.koinoniainstitute.org/dp and by clicking on your state.

KI Resident Study Program

In keeping with the Biblical objective of “equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ” (Ephesians 4:12,13), Koinonia Institute is committed to providing a wide range of learning opportunities for the serious Christian.

We have established a “Resident Study Program” at the River Lodge in New Zealand. Participants can come for 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or longer, to study with us, advance in the KI Medal-lion Program, and prepare for supplemental “tentmaking” skills, all specifically tailored to their spe-cific calling. The weekends will also be exploited to discover New Zealand, the “Emerald Isle of the South Pacific.”

Recently students from Greece, Canada and New Zealand joined Chuck Missler and his staff at the River Lodge to participate in the launch of the KI Resident Study Program. The results have been life changing for everyone involved. Are you lacking in you Education, Experience and Enablement to fulfill your calling as a Christian? Are you are looking for:

• Intensive and comprehensive Bible studies utilizing the online facilities of Koinonia Institute,• Intimate Christian living and learning environment,• On-hands technical training with an on-site mentoring program, and• An exciting adventure seeing the wonders of New Zealand?

Look no further. For as little as $1,000 New Zealand Dollars (about $850 USD, £600 GBP) per month you can join our growing residence study program at the River Lodge in Reporoa, New Zealand.

TA Spotlight

David Nelson, Teaching Assistant by Sally Ilko, TA Coordinator

1.    How did you arrive at your decision to serve KI in the capacity of a TA?

I first “discovered” Chuck Missler by accident on YouTube and was abso-lutely blown away. After I learned about KI, I signed up. I wanted to serve as a TA after I earned my Bronze Medallion. What I had learned was very exciting and eye-opening. Several of the TAs I had along the way were a real blessing to me. I wanted to be able to help others grow in their under-standing and amazement of God’s Word.

 2.    What are your Spiritual Gifts and how have you used them as a TA?

I believe I have the gifts of Prophecy, Teaching and Leadership. These have all come into play in one form or another. Leadership is obviously important. Prophecy and Teaching have been useful when a student has a question or a different viewpoint than what was presented in a lecture or another student in the forums.

3.    What excites you the most in serving as a TA?

I think it is awesome how being a TA allows you, in a sense, to go into all the world and make disciples without leaving your home. It is also amazing to me how the promise of two or three being gathered together in His name works across the globe and through the Internet.

4.    What is your favorite Scripture and why?

I love the Torah, especially the book of Genesis. The types and shadows of the Messiah are all through the book, in the accounts of the patriarchs, especially the story of Joseph. It is truly amazing. My absolute favorite verse is Genesis 1:1. That is the foundation of the Word, in my opinion. There is also amazing symbolism behind the Hebrew

letters of that verse as well as the structure of the sentence in Hebrew. I also like Psalm 132:1 – that is the verse I claim is my favorite to people who won’t understand why I like Genesis 1:1. 5.    Who has been most influential in your Christian life?

I would have to say my parents have been the most influential in my Christian life. I do not know where I would be without them. I would probably not be a believer today if it were not for them. They both love the Lord and the Word. My Mom really loves studying types the Scriptures and we have some “strange and wonderful” conversations about things we have seen in the text. 6.    Where can we find you during your free time, weekends and vacation?

I enjoy spending time with my family. I also like tinkering with computers, electronics. And “home auto-mation.” I usually have a pet project or three that I am working on such as my Siri controlled ceiling fan. 7.    How long have you been serving KI as a TA?

I started serving as a TA in November of 2010 after earning my Bronze a couple of months prior in Sep-tember 2010.

8.    Where did you grow up? Are you still there? Why not?

When I was growing up, I lived in New Jersey for about 10 years and then Colorado for about 6. My fam-ily moved to Virginia when I was in college. My I moved back to Colorado for a while after I got married. My sons and I moved back to Virginia to be close to family after my wife passed away. My family has been a real blessing and a life-saver. 9.    What has been your most favorite KI Berean study? Why?

This is a difficult choice. I really enjoyed Daniel and Revelation, mainly because I enjoy studying Bible Prophecy. I also really enjoyed taking The Wisdom of Hebrew back when that was offered. I love seeing and discovering the symbolism behind the text and view it as authentication codes as Dr. Missler says. I am looking forward to taking the classes on Cryptology, but have not had the opportunity yet. 10. In what area(s) do you serve in your church?

I currently teach a Sunday School class for single adults, which I have done for several years. I enjoy lead-ing adult Bible studies and have done a number of them over the past several years. 11. What additional information about yourself would you like to share with other people?

I often describe myself to others at KI as a “type-a-holic”. Not because I like to type, but because I am ad-dicted to discovering the types in the Scriptures. What Dr. Missler refers to as a “Macro Code.”

G12 “I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse those who curse you, and in you all the families for the earth shall be blessed.”

THE BIRTH OF PASSIONby Sharon Stolebarger, KI Tour Director

Last year, Dan and I had the privilege of traveling to both Australia and New Zealand for speaking engagements at various churches. One of these was Kalgoorlie Baptist Church. Trevor and Julie Kershaw had been with us to Israel several times and it was their desire to have us come. Dan conducted a three-day conference at the church, ending with Sunday services at Kalgoorlie Baptist Church.

Trevor and Julie have a deep passion for Israel and they wanted their church to get “infected” with this same passion. Prior to the commencement of the conference, the Kershaws hosted an informal get-together at their home so that we could meet the leadership of the church. It was here that we met Sean George, a doctor in Kalgoorlie. I could go down a rabbit trail here, but let’s just say it would be well worth your time to research his name and hear his testimony of how he, a medical professional, died for 1 ½ hours, and then breathed. I will leave it at that, other than to add that Sean and his wife, Sherry, are now dear friends of ours.

Sean came to the informal gathering and was non-committal. Within 10 minutes of hearing Dan speaking regarding Israel, Sean was “hooked.” He and Sherry, also a doctor, attended every meet-ing. Fast forward to May 2014. Sean and Sherry came with us to Israel on the Berean Tour, as well as the extension to Petra. Sitting under the tutelage of both Dan and Jane BenAri, a deep passion for Israel was birthed.

On Sunday, August 17, 2014, Sean led his church in a teaching on Israel but, more importantly, a time of prayer for Israel at their church. Here is a testimony written by one of the leaders in the church:

Sean was truly so anointed. He did a fantastic job, using the word of God to describe why we, as a church and as individuals, have to stand with and pray for Israel. He then called the leaders on stage and we knelt and prayed for Israel; beautiful, heartfelt prayers.

Sean asked the rest of the congregation to break up in small groups to pray. He also gave out a handout to guide us in what to pray for. People responded, the whole church was praying for Israel, many on their knees. I never thought I would see this day.

Sometimes it is such a blessing for the Lord to allow us to see and experience some of the fruit of the ministry. A church now standing with Israel today! Lord, please continue to wake your body up, to take a stand today! Sean, Sherry, Trevor and Julie … “Good on ya, Mates!”

KOINONIA INSTITUTE ISRAEL RELIEF FUND

Many of you donate to our IRF. Prior to Operation Protective Edge, we were in the process of purchasing the Golani 13 a portable Ping-Pong table so they could move it with them when their unit is transferred from location to location. The war became a more-urgent need and so we put the Ping-Pong table aside and purchased 26 folding tables, which were immediately sent down to the border area near Gaza. We still plan on getting that Ping-Pong table.

If you would like to donate to the Koinonia Institute Israel Relief Fund, simply make a check out to:

On the memo line, please write ISRAEL RELIEF FUND. You can also designate whether you would want these funds to go to soldiers or to needy families or perhaps ministries that we personally endorse. You will be blessed!

Recent Medallion Recipients

Congratulations!

Stan Honn

Our annual conference is just around the corner. Every year I get some last-minute requests to have a medallion presented at conference. While presenting Medallions is always a welcome high-light of our annual get together, the “last minute request” presents problems. This year we expect to have Bronze, Silver, and Gold medallions to present. If you are planning to have your Bronze or Silver medallion presented at conference I need to hear from you no later than October 13, 2014

so I can have everything ready to go before Conference starts, For those achieving Gold please let me know by October 1st. For everyone plan-ning to participate in that event this year I will need a short BIO (3 or 4 short bullet points) from you along with which Medallion you will be presented. Also, let me know if you already have your medallion, if so you will need to bring it with you to conference.

Speaking of Medallions, there seems to be an ever-growing number of people who have earned their Bronze Medallion but have never claimed it. Once you have completed your final course qualifying you for Bronze, we automatically send you an email requesting that you verify your shipping address before we assign your medallion and ship it. I am currently waiting for 58 past and present members to claim their Medallion; some of those were earned as far back as February of 2011. If you happen to be one of those people, send an email to [email protected] and provide a complete shipping address where a pack-age can be delivered to you.

We are putting the finishing touches on the new Study Center; adjusting the look and feel of things, tweak-ing parts of the system to work better, lots of that to do yet. We still have some cleanup work to do on a fair number of Berean courses before we consider them finished, but that list is slowly getting shorter. I want to take this opportunity to again thank all of you for your patience during this time of major transi-tion. We have scrambled constantly just to keep up with the course schedule, sometimes not being able to provide much time to enroll in the guided courses. I now have courses on the schedule through the end of October and hope to soon have that schedule stretched out through the end of the year. In that schedule you will find some new courses open to the general student body for the first time, with more coming by the end of the year. We always put up new courses in “pilot” mode first, only allowing a few seasoned TAs to participate in that Pilot class. That process helps us catch and fix poorly worded questions and helps us to qualify TAs for those classrooms when we open the course up to the general student body.

KI Technology Update (Cont’d)

If you have not yet taken the opportunity to check out the new Study Center you will want to do so in the near future. We currently have 44 classes up for enrollment in Self Paced mode. Most who have checked out a SP classroom come back for more. A few people have let us know they would rather have the fellowship of the guided classroom and we will continue to post our courses in that mode as well. If you used to take classes with us and had to drop out because your schedule didn’t mesh with our classroom schedule, I would like to invite you back to take a look. If you have a free weekend or two you can complete one of our Self Paced courses. It’s a great way to continue your Berean studies with us.
