The program supports faculty/studentresearch groups by covering expenses incurred duringexploratory visits to BNL and while performing initialexperiments at the NSLS and HFBR. Expenses coveredinclude travel, housing, per diem, and some incidentalcosts.

Both the NSLS and the HFBR are large interdisciplinaryresearch facilities. The NSLS is a dedicated synchrotronradiation user facility with two electron storage rings-avacuum ultraviolet (VUV) ring which operates at anelectron energy of 750 MeV and provides infrared, ultraviolet, and soft X-ray photons, and an X-ray ringwhich operates at 2.5 GeV and provides usable photonfluxes at energies from below lkeV to above 20 keV.Instruments for performing photoelectron, photoionization, fluorescence, and infraredspectroscopy, lithography, microscopy, EXAFS (ExtendedX-ray Absorption Fine Structure), small-angle scattering, diffraction, crystallography, topography, medicalimaging, and other studies are available. Scheduling of

experiments is underway on the VUV ring. Scheduling ofthe X-ray ring is expected to begin during the fall of1988, following completion of a major upgrade programpresently underway. The HFBR comprises a 60 megawatt research reactor, systems for irradiation experiments, and nine beamtubes which supply neutron fluxes to 15 experimentalstations. A cold neutron source is available for inelasticand small-angle neutron scattering experiments.Monochromatic neutron beams in both the thermal andepithermal energy ranges are provided. Instruments areavailable for a wide range of scientific studies Includingneutron diffraction, inelastic scattering, chemical andbiological structure studies, and a number of areas innuclear physics. This program is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, and is open to U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliensfrom U.S. institutions of higher education. To receive an application form or for further Information, contact: Susan White-DePace, User Administrator, NSLSDepartment, Building 725B, Brookhaven NationalLaboratory, Associated Universities, Inc., Upton, L.l., NewYork 11973.
