ACCOMMODATION REQUIREMENTS (2)

* Does not include room for Paul Monks as no dates given** Does not include room for Hugh Coe which may be needed*** Cambridge require 4 rooms but no dates given yet**** 1 room required for Andy Morse but no dates given yet

So far 40 rooms provisionally booked from 17th July to 21st August, this may be sufficient for this period depending on Cambridge balloon team schedule and when/if Paul Monks and Hugh Coe are flying out. Extra rooms need to be booked for dates outside this period.

2 room also required for 26th Aug but wouldn’t fit on slide

Available Rooms at Grand Hotel in Niamey

The Hotel Grand is African Four Star standard and has 35 bedrooms in main block and 35 bungalows (bedroom and bathroom). A further 16 superior rooms 6 bungalows should have been completed in December 2005 for the French African Games. All rooms had air conditioning; most worked well but all were noisy. All rooms had fridges, TV (24hr football channel, CNN), hot water, plenty of power points and phones (the lines can be used for internet connections).

The Grand Hotel is a medium sized hotel set on a hill 30m above the River Niger. It has a central Niamey location, close (2 minutes walk) to the DMN (Met Office). Travel time to the airport is approx 15-20 min by car.

AIRPORT FACILITIES

Room 4 is being renovated and furnished

to be used as office and lab space for instrument

Floor plan for rooms 3b and 4 (in blue). Thick blue line is requested partition wall to split room 4 into smaller rooms for lab and office space.

Room 11 for DFL staff

Room 9 Proposed Briefing RoomIt is now almost certain that Room 9 will not be used as a briefing room as no renovations have been done and it is quite inaccessible. Another option could be using the archive room in the radio-sonde hangar, or rooms under the hangar depending on the location of the GCs.

SHIPPING

Quote from Menzies (via Excel Air Freight) to transport all equipment excluding gas cylinders to Niamey:

~£11,500

This price is based on the fridge/freezers being non-hazardous and includes: Freight, Airline Handling, Security, Fuel Surcharge, War Surcharge, UK Documentation Fee, Customs Entry Fee and collection from each institution. I have requested arrival in Niamey for 10th July and have been told kit should be ready for collection at the end of June.

For the return trip from Niger I have just learned I have to go through a separate company (SDV Logistics) and I am awaiting a quote for the return trip.

GASES:

Quote from Transit+ UK for sea freight is £270/m3 + handling fees etc

Total price is: ~£1720 for shipment to Niamey, again a separate company will have to be used for the return shipment and I’m waiting for details from contacts in Niger. Quote includes collection of all cylinders from UEA.

The service is monthly/transit time 32 days, price will need to be confirmed nearer shipping date. For arrival by 14th July need to be at ship by 10th June. Although it will probably be wise to send the cylinders on the ship leaving in May to be absolutely certain they arrive before the BAe146.
