Status of Automatic Weather StationsStatus of Automatic Weather Stations

• 74 AWS´s working with near real time availability of data on the Internet

• Highly probable that for the NAME the number will climb to 84

• Measurements (averages or accumulations) at 10 minute intervals

• GOES telemetry every 3 hours• “Publication on Internet time lag”

between 15 and 75 minutes, depending on the actual time of transmission

Meteorological Observatories

• 83 surface synoptic stations• Nominally: measurements every hour,

transmission every 3 hours (8/day)• “Pen and paper” recording instruments• Reality:

– Staff of 7 required for full operation– On average staffed by 4.3 observers– Down from 5.1 a few months ago– Can still go down from now to summer-2004

• Data available in near real time from WMO-GTS (for example WAFS station)
