Many districts in Gauteng and the Western Cape achieved pass rates well over 80%. Most districts improved their pass rate compared to the 2011 results. The percentage Matriculants achieving a Bachelor pass was highest in education districts in Gauteng and the Western Cape. The table shows five years of Matric passrates by Education District from 2008 to 2012. Percentage Bachelor passes 16% - 25% 26% - 35% 36% - 45% 46% - 50% (best) 10% - 15% (worst) Project partners District profiles, small schools and learner migration project for the national Department of Basic Education High and Low Gauteng North (89%), Ekurhuleni North and Tshwane North (88%) had the highest Matric pass rates in 2012. The district with the lowest percentage Matric pass rate was Fort Beaufort with 49% followed by Mt Frere with 50%. The figures below each education district indicate the 2012 Matric pass rate as well as 2011 pass rate (in brackets). The darker shaded districts have higher Matric pass rates than the lighter shaded ones. Map Key Matric pass rate 49% - 55% (lowest) 56% - 65% 66% - 75% 76% - 85% 86% - 89% (highest) Bachelor Pass For a Bachelors pass, learners must: Obtain at least 40% for their Home Language Obtain at least 50% for four other High Credit subjects Obtain at least 30% for two other subjects Meet the language requirement for further study at a South African institution, namely, one of the two official languages offered by learner must be either English or Afrikaans To meet the language criterion to qualify for entry to study at a tertiary education institution, the learner must pass either English or Afrikaans at least at the 1st additional level i.e. at 30% or more.

Bachelor Pass

For a Bachelors pass, learners must:

• Obtain at least 40% for their Home Language • Obtain at least 50% for four other High Credit subjects • Obtain at least 30% for two other subjects • Meet the language requirement for further study at a

South African institution, namely, one of the two official languages offered by learner must be either English or Afrikaans

To meet the language criterion to qualify for entry to study at a tertiary education institution, the learner must pass either English or Afrikaans at least at the 1st additional level i.e. at 30% or more.
