  • 3. Introduction Access to fastest growing economies of the world Peru has signed FTA agreements with several countries in Asia and is currently in negotiations in the TPP Peru has to continue implementing economic reforms Peru has to learn from the APEC process and from the Asian economies
  • 4. Influence of APEC and Asia economies in Peru Trade with APEC member economies account for 58% of our external trade. Trade with economies in the Asia Pacific was nearly 30%. (2013 data) Trade, and investment from APEC economies has contributed to Peru economic growth Thanks to participation in APEC Peru has signed FTA agreements with several Asian countries Peru can take advantages of the growing economies of APEC, not only by selling them more goods, or importing from them cheap manufactured ones, but also by learning from their development experiences
  • 5. Peru has to be competitive. Has to advance from selling mostly primary goods to manufactured goods. There are several good experiences in this process from APEC economies. How we do this? Many Asian economies were poorer than Peru 60 years ago but now they are ahead of us Why for example Singapur and several Asian economies are in the top positions in the ranking of the global competitive index of the WEF?

Participation of the academic sector Peru has to prepare to take more advantage of its participation in the APEC The government, together with the business and academic sector should work in that aim 12 leading Universities of Peru are together in the REDAP, Red Peruana de Estudios del Asia Pacifico, or Peruvian Network of Asia Pacific Studies REDAP organize events to promote the studies of Asia Pacific, through research competitions and Conferences in the subject, to raise awareness about the importance of APEC and Asian economies
